Screening Assay For Enzymes Involved In Pathophysiology Using Seldi-Tof Mass Spectrometr, Khalid M. Elased, Mariana Morris Feb 2008

Screening Assay For Enzymes Involved In Pathophysiology Using Seldi-Tof Mass Spectrometr, Khalid M. Elased, Mariana Morris

Pharmacology and Toxicology Faculty Publications

The invention provides methods for quantifying enzymatic activity of an enzyme with a known substrate. The methods employ SELDI-TOF mass spectrometry, and are suitable, in particular, for assaying aspects of the renin-angiotensin system. The methods may be utilized to assess and/or monitor biological conditions associated with the renin-angiotensin system prior to the manifestation of known physiological and biomarkers for such conditions. The methods are suitable for analysis of pharmacological effectors of the renin-angiotensin system, and are particularly suitable for automation and high-throughput screening assay design.

Recent Advances In Microscale Pumping Technologies: A Review And Evaluation, Brian D. Iverson, S V. Garimella Feb 2008

Recent Advances In Microscale Pumping Technologies: A Review And Evaluation, Brian D. Iverson, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Micropumping has emerged as a critical research area for many electronics and biological applications. A significant driving force underlying this research has been the integration of pumping mechanisms in micro total analysis systems and other multi-functional analysis techniques. Uses in electronics packaging and micromixing and microdosing systems have also capitalized on novel pumping concepts. The present work builds upon a number of existing reviews of micropumping strategies by focusing on the large body of micropump advances reported in the very recent literature. Critical selection criteria are included for pumps and valves to aid in determining the pumping mechanism that is …

Interactions Of Neurons, Astrocytes And Microglia With Hucb Cell Populations In Stroke Models: Migration, Neuroprotection And Inflammation, Lixian Jiang Feb 2008

Interactions Of Neurons, Astrocytes And Microglia With Hucb Cell Populations In Stroke Models: Migration, Neuroprotection And Inflammation, Lixian Jiang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies demonstrated that intravenous administration of human umbilical cord blood (HUCB) cells could improve behavioral and neurological recovery of stroked animals following middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). In addition, HUCB cell recipients had less of an inflammatory response with less leukocyte infiltration. In these studies we explored how HUCB cells change the inflammatory response of neurons, astrocytes, and microglia to hypoxia/ischemia. Initiation of the inflammatory response occurs with the expression of chemokines. We determined that monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) and macrophage inflammatory protein 1alph (MIP-1a), which are upregulated in the brain early after a stroke, induce migration of HUCB …

Cost Comparison Of Perchlorate Treatment Options, Emma O. Nolan Feb 2008

Cost Comparison Of Perchlorate Treatment Options, Emma O. Nolan

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Perchlorate (ClO4 -) is used as an oxidizer for rocket fuel, fireworks, matches, air bags, and other mechanisms requiring enhanced explosions. Because perchlorate is extremely hydrophilic, it leaches into ground water and is eventually found in drinking water supplies. Public health is the primary reason agencies regulate perchlorate. Severe effects of perchlorate ingestion are hypothyroidism, goiter, and aplastic anemia. The objectives of this study were isolate areas of perchlorate occurrence and compare costs of government sanctioned compliance methods. Two removal strategies meet the best available technology (BAT) criteria for perchlorate, single pass ion exchange and biological fluidized bed reactor. The …

Drug Resistance To Topoisomerase Directed Chemotherapy In Human Multiple Myeloma, Joel G. Turner Feb 2008

Drug Resistance To Topoisomerase Directed Chemotherapy In Human Multiple Myeloma, Joel G. Turner

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Human multiple myeloma is an incurable hematological malignancy characterized by the proliferation of plasma cells in the bone marrow. Myeloma represents approximately 20% of all blood cancers. In this research we have explored examples of both intrinsic and acquired drug resistance in myeloma.

Topoisomerases are enzymes that are critical for cell division, especially in rapidly dividing cells such as are found in cancer. Topoisomerase poisons are a common group of drugs that are used to treat cancer. Topoisomerase I and II poisons used in the treatment of multiple myeloma include topotecan, mitoxantrone, doxorubicin, and etoposide

In order for topoisomerase drugs …

Two Chloride Sources In Soils Of The Mcmurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, Huiming Bao, Jaime D. Barnes, Zachary D. Sharp, David R. Marchant Feb 2008

Two Chloride Sources In Soils Of The Mcmurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, Huiming Bao, Jaime D. Barnes, Zachary D. Sharp, David R. Marchant

Faculty Publications

Sulfate, nitrate, and chloride are major water-soluble anions in soils of the McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDV), Antarctica. We measured the chloride stable isotope composition of 40 soil samples from 16 different soil profiles. The soil profiles come from three different microclimate zones in the MDV: a coastal thaw zone, which fosters a seasonally saturated active layer; a stable upland zone, in which air and soil temperatures are too cold to foster active layers and/or significant snowmelt; and an intermediate, inland mixed zone. Results show that the total water-soluble chloride content is low in both the coastal and the upland zones, …
