Pathoecology And The Future Of Coprolite Studies In Bioarchaeology, Karl J. Reinhard, Vaughn M. Bryant Jr. Feb 2008

Pathoecology And The Future Of Coprolite Studies In Bioarchaeology, Karl J. Reinhard, Vaughn M. Bryant Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Human coprolites currently provide an expanding array of information about the diet, health, and ecology of prehistoric people in the Southwest, but for many years coprolites were not recognized or preserved, or they were not considered important and thus were not saved (Bryant and Dean 2006). With the expansion of archaeological field work during the last half of the twentieth century archaeologists have increasingly explored the “complete” potentials of sites, including the collection and analysis of geomorphologic, botanical, and faunal data. In some ideal habitats (e.g., very dry or frozen) this includes exploring the scientific potential of human coprolite studies. …

Effects Of Electric Field On The Functions Of Cell Membrane Proteins, Zhongsheng Zhang Feb 2008

Effects Of Electric Field On The Functions Of Cell Membrane Proteins, Zhongsheng Zhang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The most important and most common channels on cell membrane are voltage-gated Na+ and K+ channels. In so-called "excitable cells" like neurons and muscle cells, these channels open or close in response to changes in potential across the membrane in order to accomplish muscle contraction and transmit signals. By controlling the membrane potential, we observe extraordinary inactivation behaviors of the voltage-gated Na+ channels and the voltage-gated delayed rectifier K+ channels, which shows that electric stimulation pulses can temporarily close the Na+ and K+ channels, just as drugs, like tetrodotoxin (TTX) and tetraethylammonium (ETA), do.

The Na/K pump is essential for …

On The Cretaceous Occurrences Of Ammogloborotalia Zheng, 2001 (Foraminifera), Michael A. Kaminski, Claudia Cetean, Andrew Henderson, Sorin Filipescu

Studia UBB Geologia

Three species of agglutinated foraminifera from Cretaceous deep-water deposits that have been described as trochamminids are here transferred to the genus Ammogloborotalia ZHENG, 2001. These species are Trochammina abrupta GEROCH, 1959; Trochammina quinqueloba GEROCH, 1959, and Ammoanita globorotaliaeformis Gradstein and Kaminski, 1999. A fourth species, Ammogloborotalia sp.1, which is probably a new species from the Turonian of the southern East Carpathians of Romania is reported here for the first time. We hereby extend the known stratigraphic range of the genus Ammogloborotalia to the Late Jurassic (Tithonian).

The Pyruvate, Orthophosphate Dikinase Regulatory Proteins Of Arabidopsis Possess A Novel, Unprecedented Ser/Thr Protein Kinase Primary Structure, Chris J. Chastain, Wenxin Xu, Kate Parsley, Gautam Sarath, Jullian Hebberd, Raymond Chollet Feb 2008

The Pyruvate, Orthophosphate Dikinase Regulatory Proteins Of Arabidopsis Possess A Novel, Unprecedented Ser/Thr Protein Kinase Primary Structure, Chris J. Chastain, Wenxin Xu, Kate Parsley, Gautam Sarath, Jullian Hebberd, Raymond Chollet

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Pyruvate, orthophosphate dikinase (PPDK) is a ubiquitous, low-abundance metabolic enzyme of undetermined function in C3 plants. Its activity in C3 chloroplasts is light-regulated via reversible phosphorylation of an active-site Thr residue by the PPDK regulatory protein (RP), a most unusual bifunctional protein kinase (PK)/ protein phosphatase (PP). In this paper we document the molecular cloning and functional analysis of the two unique C3 RPs in Arabidopsis thaliana. The first of these, AtRP1, encodes a typical chloroplast-targeted, bifunctional C4-like RP. The second RP gene, AtRP2, encodes a monofunctional polypeptide that possesses in vitro RP-like PK activity but lacks PP activity, …
