Two Chloride Sources In Soils Of The Mcmurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, Huiming Bao, Jaime D. Barnes, Zachary D. Sharp, David R. Marchant

Faculty Publications

Sulfate, nitrate, and chloride are major water-soluble anions in soils of the McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDV), Antarctica. We measured the chloride stable isotope composition of 40 soil samples from 16 different soil profiles. The soil profiles come from three different microclimate zones in the MDV: a coastal thaw zone, which fosters a seasonally saturated active layer; a stable upland zone, in which air and soil temperatures are too cold to foster active layers and/or significant snowmelt; and an intermediate, inland mixed zone. Results show that the total water-soluble chloride content is low in both the coastal and the upland zones, …

On the Green is an internal publication of Gallaudet College, which later became Gallaudet University. It notified employees of updates around the campus and in the broader community, including new construction and the establishment of new academic programs. Running until 2010, it was supplanted by various forms of online mass communications across multiple audiences.

Recycling Of Dolichyl Monophosphate To The Cytoplasmic Leaflet Of The Endoplasmic Reticulum After The Cleavage Of Dolichyl Pyrophosphate On The Lumenal Monolayer., Jeffrey S Rush, Ningguo Gao, Mark A Lehrman, Charles J Waechter Feb 2008

Recycling Of Dolichyl Monophosphate To The Cytoplasmic Leaflet Of The Endoplasmic Reticulum After The Cleavage Of Dolichyl Pyrophosphate On The Lumenal Monolayer., Jeffrey S Rush, Ningguo Gao, Mark A Lehrman, Charles J Waechter

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

During protein N-glycosylation, dolichyl pyrophosphate (Dol-P-P) is discharged in the lumenal monolayer of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Dol-P-P is then cleaved to Dol-P by Dol-P-P phosphatase (DPPase). Studies with the yeast mutant cwh8Delta, lacking DPPase activity, indicate that recycling of Dol-P produced by DPPase contributes significantly to the pool of Dol-P utilized for lipid intermediate biosynthesis on the cytoplasmic leaflet. Whether Dol-P formed in the lumen diffuses directly back to the cytoplasmic leaflet or is first dephosphorylated to dolichol has not been determined. Incubation of sealed ER vesicles from calf brain with acetyl-Asn-Tyr-Thr-NH(2), an N-glycosylatable peptide, to generate Dol-P-P in …

Imprinting Of An Evolutionarily Conserved Antisense Transcript Gene Apeg3, Jung Ha Choo, Jeong Do Kim, Joomyeong Kim Feb 2008

Imprinting Of An Evolutionarily Conserved Antisense Transcript Gene Apeg3, Jung Ha Choo, Jeong Do Kim, Joomyeong Kim

Faculty Publications

APeg3 is an antisense transcript gene of Peg3, which has been recently identified from rat brain. Careful analyses of EST databases indicated that a homologous transcript also exists in other mammalian species, including mouse, cow and human. 5′-and 3′-RACE experiments have subsequently identified a 900-bp cDNA sequence of APeg3 from mouse brain. Mouse APeg3 is localized in the 3′UTR of Peg3 with an intronless genomic structure. The expression of mouse APeg3 is derived mainly from the paternal allele, indicating the imprinting of this antisense transcript gene in brain. Strand-specific RNA analyses also revealed the expression of both human and cow …

The Psb27 Protein Facilitates Manganese Cluster Assembly In Photosystem Ii, Johnna L. Roose, Himadri B. Pakrasi Feb 2008

The Psb27 Protein Facilitates Manganese Cluster Assembly In Photosystem Ii, Johnna L. Roose, Himadri B. Pakrasi

Faculty Publications

Photosystem II (PSII) is a large membrane protein complex that uses light energy to convert water to molecular oxygen. This enzyme undergoes an intricate assembly process to ensure accurate and efficient positioning of its many components. It has been proposed that the Psb27 protein, a lumenal extrinsic subunit, serves as a PSII assembly factor. Using a psb27 genetic deletion strain (Δpsb27) of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, we have defined the role of the Psb27 protein in PSII biogenesis. While the Psb27 protein was not essential for photosynthetic activity, various PSII assembly assays revealed that the Δpsb27 mutant was …

Sp1 Up-Regulates Camp-Response-Element-Binding Protein Expression During Retinoic Acid-Induced Mucous Differentiation Of Normal Human Bronchial Epithelial Cells, Jeong Soo Hong, Seung-Wook Kim, Ja Seok Koo

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

CREB [CRE (cAMP-response element)-binding protein] is an important transcription factor that is differentially regulated in cells of various types. We recently reported that RA (retinoic acid) rapidly activates CREB without using RARs (RA receptors) or RXRs (retinoid X receptors) in NHTBE cells (normal human tracheobronchial epithelial cells). However, little is known about the role of RA in the physiological regulation of CREB expression in the early mucous differentiation of NHTBE cells. In the present study, we report that RA up-regulates CREB gene expression and that, using 5'-serial deletion promoter analysis and mutagenesis analyses, two Sp1 (specificity protein 1)-binding sites located …

Elemental analysis has played an important role in the characterization of soils since inception of the soil survey in the US. Recent efforts in analysis of trace and major elements (geochemistry) have provided necessary data to soil survey users in a variety of areas. The first part of this paper provides a brief overview of elemental sources, forms, mobility, and bioavailability; critical aspects important to users of soil survey geochemical data for appropriate use and interpretations. Examples are provided based on data gathered as part of the US soil survey program. The second part addresses the organization of sample collection …

Switching Language Switches Mind: Linguistic Effects On Developmental Neural Bases Of ‘Theory Of Mind’, Chiyoko Kobayashi, Gary H. Glover, Elise Temple

Dartmouth Scholarship

Theory of mind (ToM)—our ability to predict behaviors of others in terms of their underlying intentions—has been examined through false-belief (FB) tasks. We studied 12 Japanese early bilingual children (8−12 years of age) and 16 late bilingual adults (18−40 years of age) with FB tasks in Japanese [first language (L1)] and English [second language (L2)], using fMRI. Children recruited more brain regions than adults for processing ToM tasks in both languages. Moreover, children showed an overlap in brain activity between the L1 and L2 ToM conditions in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Adults did not show such a convergent activity …

Designs And Applications Of Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors For Biological And Chemical Sensing And Sample Handling, Stefan Cular Feb 2008

Designs And Applications Of Surface Acoustic Wave Sensors For Biological And Chemical Sensing And Sample Handling, Stefan Cular

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Acoustic wave sensors have proven useful in many fields as primarily mass sensitive devices capable of responding to small environmental perturbations. The focus of this dissertation is the development of a new type of surface acoustic wave device with application to material property measurement, and biological and chemical sensing. This device is a combination of three independent acoustic wave devices with these waves propagated across the same area, while retaining independence of actuation and sensor function. The development of a complete sensor system, and its use and operation are presented for several example cases of chemical and biomarker sensing, and …
