Fluorescent Si Nanoparticle-Based Electrode For Sensing Biomedical Substances, Gang Wang, Siu-Tung Yau, Kevin Mantey, Munir H. Nayfeh

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We have been studying the miniaturization of silicon crystals and the transition from the solid state to the atomistic state. We demonstrated the existence of “sweet spots” in cluster size in the range 1–3nm that have enhanced chemical, structural, and photo stability. The particles are produced by an electrochemical etching process as dispersion in liquid, and they are reconstituted in films, patterns, alloys, or spread on chips to produce super chips. Unlike bulk, these Si nanoparticle configurations have a spectacular ability to glow in distinct RGB colors. In this paper we describe an electrode sensor built by decorating metal or …

Making Nuisance Ecological, J.B. Ruhl Apr 2008

Making Nuisance Ecological, J.B. Ruhl

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Common law nuisance doctrine has the reputation of having provided much of the strength and content of environmental law prior to the rise of federal statutory regimes in the 1970s, but since then has taken a back seat to regulatory law with respect to the environment. In particular, whereas nuisance doctrine has been criticized - many say too harshly - as being inadequate for dealing with the demands of modern pollution control, it has never been considered as having much at all to do with management of ecological concerns. Yet nuisance law evolves with changed circumstances and new knowledge. This …

Meditation, Christian Values And Psychotherapy, Kristin L. Hansen, Dianne Nielsen, Mitchell Harris Apr 2008

Meditation, Christian Values And Psychotherapy, Kristin L. Hansen, Dianne Nielsen, Mitchell Harris

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

In recent decades meditation has been studied in the psychotherapy literature and incorporated into psychotherapy treatments (see Walsh & Shapiro, 2006, for review). As therapists who find meditation compatible with our Christian-based treatment approach, we have struggled to describe the integration of meditation and psychotherapy. In this article we first describe what meditation is, then consider its mechanisms of change, use in therapy or as a complement to therapy, and utility for therapists. The authors believe, consistent with Richards and Bergin’s (1997) view, that meditation is a spiritual intervention that can be used in theistically framed therapy. Ongoing research continues …

Reconstructing The Race-Sex Analogy, Serena Mayeri Apr 2008

Reconstructing The Race-Sex Analogy, Serena Mayeri

William & Mary Law Review

In the standard account, American sex equality law rests on a partial and imperfect analogy to race, developed in the 1970s by feminists intent on establishing formal equality between men and women, and embraced, albeit selectively and uneasily, by lawmakers and judges. But this account, although containing important elements of truth, obscures the creative ways that advocates turned the tables, arguing that principles developed in sex equality jurisprudence could expand the availability of remedies for racial injustice. This Article explores one example of this phenomenon: efforts, led by Ruth Bader Ginsburg, to use the emerging constitutional distinction between detrimental and …

Explaining Religion To Death: Reductionism, Evolution, And The Psychology Of Religion, Edwin E. Gantt, Richard N. Williams Apr 2008

Explaining Religion To Death: Reductionism, Evolution, And The Psychology Of Religion, Edwin E. Gantt, Richard N. Williams

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Recent thinking suggests that the time is right for a reconsideration of the interface between psychology and religion. We argue that most accounts of religion in contemporary psychology (especially as typified by evolutionary theory) have been toxic to the phenomena of religious experience. This toxicity results from the adoption of a naturalistic explanatory framework that renders religious phenomena as merely results of mechanical forces and material conditions. This approach fails to take religious phenomena seriously and, thereby, dismisses their meaningfulness before any serious investigation has begun. We argue that only by taking religious experience seriously"that is by treating religious phenomena …

Inferences Regarding The Diet Of Extinct Hominins: Structural And Functional Trends In Dental And Mandibular Morphology Within The Hominin Clade, Peter W. Lucas, Paul J. Constantino, Bernard A. Wood Apr 2008

Inferences Regarding The Diet Of Extinct Hominins: Structural And Functional Trends In Dental And Mandibular Morphology Within The Hominin Clade, Peter W. Lucas, Paul J. Constantino, Bernard A. Wood

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

This contribution investigates the evolution of diet in the Pan – Homo and hominin clades. It does this by focusing on 12 variables (nine dental and three mandibular) for which data are available about extant chimpanzees, modern humans and most extinct hominins. Previous analyses of this type have approached the interpretation of dental and gnathic function by focusing on the identification of the food consumed (i.e. fruits, leaves, etc.) rather than on the physical properties (i.e. hardness, toughness, etc.) of those foods, and they have not specifically addressed the role that the physical properties of foods play in determining dental …

Avoiding Bowel Toxicity In The Treatment Of The Renal Surgical Bed, Tanya M. Custer, Lisa A. Bartenhagen Apr 2008

Avoiding Bowel Toxicity In The Treatment Of The Renal Surgical Bed, Tanya M. Custer, Lisa A. Bartenhagen

Posters and Presentations: Radiation Therapy

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common cancer associated with the kidney. RCC accounts for approximately 3% of all adult malignancies with the incidence increasing by almost 2% per year.1,2 Radical nephrectomy is the standard of treatment for patients with localized disease; however approximately 30% of patients present with metastasis.2

The use of radiation therapy is most often limited to post-operative cases when residual tumor is identified or for symptomatic relief of metastatic disease. Definitive radiation treatment is not commonly indicated due to the low tolerance to radiation of surrounding abdominal structures such as the small bowel, …

Adam Smith And Consumerism’S Role In Happiness: Modern Society Re-Examined, Michael Busch Apr 2008

Adam Smith And Consumerism’S Role In Happiness: Modern Society Re-Examined, Michael Busch

Major Themes in Economics

In modern America, consumerism has encouraged people to seek happiness through constant expansion of their material standard of living. Consumerism has led to a growth of status consumption and want-creation, both of which increase consumption without contributing to happiness. Adam Smith observed that lasting happiness is found in tranquility as opposed to consumption. In their quest for more consumption, people have forgotten about the three virtues Smith observed that best provide for a tranquil lifestyle and overall social well-being: justice, beneficence and prudence. Applying the virtues to modern society may decrease overall consumption but will lead to a more satisfied …

My research will delve into the workings of the community of Bom Jardim in Fortaleza, Ceará, in their endeavors for positive mental and physical community development through the tactics of their base organization Movimento de Saúde Mental Comunitária do Bom Jardim (MSMCBJ). Specifically I am looking at the Terapia Comunitária (community therapy) program, one of the many branches of MSMCBJ, and how through their projects do they fulfill their goal of organizing a community from the roots to blossom into a healthier and more vibrant one. I will also look into how this model is sustainable and why this method …

Alcoa In Juruti, Brazil: A Case Of Environmental Injustice And Colonialism?, Caitlin Schroering Apr 2008

Alcoa In Juruti, Brazil: A Case Of Environmental Injustice And Colonialism?, Caitlin Schroering

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper examines the visions of development of Alcoa, an American bauxite mining company, and the traditional ribeirinho communities in the area of Juruti Velho, Brazil. These two objectives are pursued in order to determine if Alcoa’s actions in the area constitute environmental injustice and colonialism. An explication of environmental injustice and colonialism is undertaken, and is followed later by a discussion of social invisibility and how circumstances are created that allow for the exploitation of traditional communities. The work and demands of ACORJUVE, a community association that is in opposition to Alcoa, are also discussed. A review of the …

Aquatic And Terrestrial Habitat Use Of The Australian Freshwater Turtle, Chelodina Expansa, Ellyn Ercolano Apr 2008

Aquatic And Terrestrial Habitat Use Of The Australian Freshwater Turtle, Chelodina Expansa, Ellyn Ercolano

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Organisms select habitats that provide the best possible resources necessary to their survival. Organisms may occupy and utilize a home range which requires specific selection of components in their available habitat. Monitoring the threats to a species within their habitats is a crucial tool in conservation and management practices. The Murray-Darling Basin of south-eastern Australia has suffered alterations to its hydrology, flow regime, catchment size and usage, flooding cycles, as well as from vast removal of vegetation in the floodplains since European settlement in Australia in the mid-nineteenth century. Knowledge of the habitat use of a focal species can guide …

The Influence Of Medicinal Plants On The Spiritism, Religion, And Science Of Tulear, Madagascar, Meghan Sweet

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Medicinal plants are polyvalent remedies used in industry and medicine. They have curative and preventative powers when used internally and externally on humans. They are also used for agricultural and veterinary purposes. They are necessary to the human body to give health and strength. Medicinal plants influence spiritism, religion, and science. These three worldviews make value judgments regarding medicinal plants. This study determines some limits and interdependencies of each worldview by looking at how they are influenced by medicinal plants in Tulear, Madagascar.

A Critical Examination Of The Biblical Teaching On The Image Of God, And Its Implications For Christian Living, Timothy T. Faber Apr 2008

A Critical Examination Of The Biblical Teaching On The Image Of God, And Its Implications For Christian Living, Timothy T. Faber

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this thesis is to provide a biblical understanding of what it means to be human. The purpose and intent of God in creating man in His own image is explored. How being made in the image of God impacts one’s life and purpose is also considered. In this process, the effects of sin on the image of God, how man attempts to compensate for sin’s damage, and how man expresses the image of God as a result of sin are discussed. Finally, the ways Christ demonstrates that He is the exact representation of the divine nature, the …

Data for this quantitative study were collected using the Instructional Leadership Practices Survey, …

Geophysical Imaging Of Watershed Subsurface Patterns And Prediction Of Soil Texture And Water Holding Capacity, H. Abdu, D. A. Robinson, M. Seyfried, Scott B. Jones Apr 2008

Geophysical Imaging Of Watershed Subsurface Patterns And Prediction Of Soil Texture And Water Holding Capacity, H. Abdu, D. A. Robinson, M. Seyfried, Scott B. Jones

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

The spatial distribution of subsurface soil textural properties across the landscape is an important control on the hydrological and ecological function of a watershed. Traditional methods of mapping soils involving subjective assignment of soil boundaries are inadequate for studies requiring a quantitative assessment of the landscape and its subsurface connectivity and storage capacity. Geophysical methods such as electromagnetic induction (EMI) provide the possibility of obtaining high-resolution images across a landscape to identify subtle changes in subsurface soil patterns. In this work we show how EMI can be used to image the subsurface of a ∼38 ha watershed. We present an …
