Collective Memory And Blood Feud: The Case Of Mountainous Crete, Aris Tsantiropoulos
Collective Memory And Blood Feud: The Case Of Mountainous Crete, Aris Tsantiropoulos
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
Drawing upon ethnographic data from mountainous central Crete, a feuding society up to the present moment, this article will focus on cases of retaliatory crimes where men avenge a relative who was killed before they were born. In these cases, what is interesting is that there do not seem to be any factors in the present to fuel the fire of a past animosity between the two kinship groups. Instead, these men seek revenge looking either for the murderer himself or for one of his male relatives in the places where they were forced to emigrate after the commitment of …

Australia And The War Against Terrorism: Terrorism, National Security And Human Rights, Mark Rix
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
This article considers whether in the 'war against terrorism' national security is eroded or strengthened by weakening or removing the human rights of the individuals who constitute the polity. It starts with the view that national security is, at its most fundamental, founded upon the security and liberty of the person from criminal and violent acts, including terrorist attacks. Such attacks, and the individuals and groups who perpetrate them, constitute a grave threat to the peace and security of nations the world over and thus endanger the security and liberty of the individuals who make up their populations. Governments are …
Metastatic Disease To The Pancreas And Spleen, Shayna L. Showalter, Eric Hager, Charles J. Yeo
Metastatic Disease To The Pancreas And Spleen, Shayna L. Showalter, Eric Hager, Charles J. Yeo
Department of Surgery Faculty Papers
Isolated metastases to the pancreas and spleen are a rare occurrence. When they are diagnosed, pancreatic metastases are most often from renal cell carcinoma, lung cancer, and breast cancer. The most common source of splenic metastases is gynecological in origin; the overwhelming majority is ovarian. If extensive staging studies reveal these metastases to be isolated, then curative resection may be warranted. This review will demonstrate that long-term survival may be achieved in patients with isolated metastases and a prolonged disease-free interval.

Horeshoe crabs "Limulus polyphemus" are remarkable ‘living fossils’ which have unique blood cells (amebocytes) that are used to test human vaccines for bacterial contamination. In the 1950’s, scientists at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, not only discovered amebocytes but also found that they had special properties. If the amebocytes came into contact with bacteria, they would instantly coagulate around the bacteria and attack it. The Woods Hole scientists took this unique property of horseshoe crabs and developed a test for bacterial contamination using a horseshoe crab blood derivative called Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL).
This article describes discusses …

Maize fields in Africa are usually surrounded by land occupied by wild plants many of which harbor lepidopteran stemborer species not found on crops. It is not known if the exotic braconid parasitoid Cotesia flavipes, which was released in Kenya in 1993 against the invasive crambid Chilo partellus, searches for and attacks these borers in their natural habitats and whether they are suitable for parasitoid development. The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between acceptance and suitability of six stemborer species attacking cultivated sorghum (C. partellus, Busseola fusca, Sesamia calamistis, and S. nonagrioides) or Napier grass (Busseola …
Higher Education Policy Punctuations: An Assessment Of Media Attention And Congressional Oversight, Dean Lefor
Higher Education Policy Punctuations: An Assessment Of Media Attention And Congressional Oversight, Dean Lefor
Theses and Dissertations
Congressional oversight of higher education is vital part of the policy process. However, a compressive study regarding the relationship between higher education oversight and attention has not been conducted. By utilizing McCubbins and Swartz’s Police Patrol and Fire Alarm Oversight Dichotomy, this experiment was able to discover that a relationship exists between fire alarm oversight and the amount of public attention in the higher education policy process.
Congressional hearings in higher education were broken into three sections over a 58-year period. Each section was divided by major policy punctuations such as the Higher Education Act of 1965 and the 1980 …

Interspecific competition between an introduced parasitoid species aimed at controlling a herbivorous pest species and a native parasitoid parasitising the same host may influence the success of classical biological control programmes. In Kenya, interspecific competition between an introduced and a local parasitoid on two diamondback moth populations (DBM, Plutella xylostella) was investigated on two different host plants. We tested simultaneous and delayed competition of the local parasitoid Diadegma mollipla Holmgren and its exotic congenus D. semiclausum Hellen on a newly aquired DBM host plant (snowpea) in the laboratory. Under simultaneous competition, D. mollipla produced more progeny than D. semiclausum on …

Our objective was to determine the effect of body mass index (BMI) on response to bacterial vaginosis (BV) treatment. A secondary analysis was conducted of two multicenter trials of therapy for BV and TRICHOMONAS VAGINALIS. Gravida were screened for BV between 8 and 22 weeks and randomized between 16 and 23 weeks to metronidazole or placebo. Of 1497 gravida with asymptomatic BV and preconceptional BMI, 738 were randomized to metronidazole; BMI was divided into categories: < 25, 25 to 29.9, and > or = 30. Rates of BV persistence at follow-up were compared using the Mantel-Haenszel chi square. Multiple logistic regression was used to evaluate the effect …

Containing The Gmo Genie: Cattle Trespass And The Rights And Responsibilities Of Biotechnology Owners, Katie Black, James Wishart
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have caused substantial economic losses by contaminating non-GMO crops and threatening the economic self-determination of non-GMO farmers. After Monsanto v. Schmeiser, biotech IP owners hold most of the rights in the property "bundle" with respect to bioengineered organisms. This commentary highlights the disequilibrium between these broad patent rights and the lack of legal responsibility for harms caused by GMO products. The authors propose that there is a role for tort law--specifically the tort of cattle trespass--in fairly allocating risk and responsibility. The doctrine of cattle trespass reflects a policy of distributive justice, positing that the unique …

Quantification Of The Environmental Solar Ultraviolet Radiation Field At The Human Eye And The Investigation Of Peripherally Focused Rays., David P. Fleming
Quantification Of The Environmental Solar Ultraviolet Radiation Field At The Human Eye And The Investigation Of Peripherally Focused Rays., David P. Fleming
Doctoral
The increase of terrestrial solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) due to the reduction of the ozone layer has promoted a variety of research into establishing the impact of this elevated potential dose of UVR on biological tissues. Anterior ocular tissues such as the cornea have been found to be susceptible to damage by terrestrial solar UVR and diseases such as pterygium are commonly thought to be a direct result of absorbed UVR at the nasal limbus. There is a need for more accurate quantification and localisation of incident UVR at the anterior ocular surface. A novel solar blind photodiode sensor array …

Stochastic Calculations For Computation Of Radiation Effects And Cell Survivability Under Voltage Pulsing, Madhuri Ganapathiraju
Stochastic Calculations For Computation Of Radiation Effects And Cell Survivability Under Voltage Pulsing, Madhuri Ganapathiraju
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Statistical computations are an important tool for the analysis of stochastic phenomena and processes that are characterized by variability. Biological systems (e.g., cells, tissues etc.) are perfect examples wherein response to a given external stimulus can be varied and needs to be adequately considered. The Monte Carlo method of analysis has now been recognized as the most effective way of treating stochastic variability.
This thesis uses Monte Carlo based simulations to probe two problems that require the quantification and modeling of effects caused by energy deposition onto biological matter from external sources. One problem involves the probabilistic study of the …
The Application Of Innovative High-Throughput Techniques To Serum Biomarker Discovery, Izabela Debkiewicz Karbassi
The Application Of Innovative High-Throughput Techniques To Serum Biomarker Discovery, Izabela Debkiewicz Karbassi
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Time-of-flight mass spectrometry continues to evolve as a promising technique for serum protein expression profiling and biomarker discovery. As seen in our initial SELDI-TOF MS and MALDI-TOF MS profiling study of serum for the assessment of breast cancer risk, many profiling strategies typically employ single chemical affinity beads or surfaces to decrease sample complexity of dynamic fluids like serum. However, most proteins, captured on a particular surface or bead, are not resolved in the lower mass range where mass spectrometers are most effective. To this end we have designed an expression profiling workflow that utilizes immobilized trypsin paramagnetic beads in …
Cannabinoids: A Novel Treatment Strategy For Retinal Neurodegenerative Disorders, Sandeep Samudre
Cannabinoids: A Novel Treatment Strategy For Retinal Neurodegenerative Disorders, Sandeep Samudre
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Synthetic and naturally occurring cannabinoids are known to decrease intraocular pressure (IOP). Glaucomatous damage to the retina and optic nerve progresses even after therapy to maintain normal intraocular pressure (IOP). Topical application of cannabinoids decreases IOP while not affecting blood pressure or heart rate. Based upon their effects on other tissues, we hypothesize that these analogs reduce IOP and may also confer direct neuroprotective effects on the retina, possibly via CB1 and/or CB2 receptors. The purpose of this study is to determine if the newly synthesized CB agonists, lipid soluble O-1812 (CB 1), and water soluble O-2545 (CB 1

Development And Validation Of Hardware To Measure The Load-Deflection Characteristics Of Any Material, Manish Govardhanrao Kalmegh
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A portable device to measure load-displacement will have applications in biomechanics and reverse engineering in the automotive and aerospace industries. Hardware was developed by attaching a load cell (LC 201, Omegadyne, Inc., Sunbury, Ohio) to a Faro Arm (Faro Technologies, Lake Mary, Florida), a portable coordinate measuring machine that accommodates standard and custom end effectors. A LabVIEW (National Instrument, Austin, Texas) program was developed to process the load cell and deflection data obtained from the Faro Arm. To validate this system, a four-inch square block, chair cushion, and head restraint of a car were tested using a material testing machine …
The Relationship Of Teacher Route To Certification To Student Outcomes On Statewide Social Studies Assessment, Aaron L. Smith
The Relationship Of Teacher Route To Certification To Student Outcomes On Statewide Social Studies Assessment, Aaron L. Smith
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
Public school divisions face daunting challenges today. One such challenge is the ability to recruit and retain highly qualified and effective teachers. Endemic teacher shortages coupled with escalating national education standards make it imperative that school divisions hire and retain teachers who can positively and immediately impact student achievement. Schools without effective teachers face possible sanctions, which could include re-staffing of the school, parental choice that would allow the student population to attend more successful schools and loss of funds.
At the same time, colleges and universities have begun alternative certification programs in an effort to compensate for teacher shortages …
Spatial And Trophic Dynamics Of A Macrofaunal Community On A High Energy Intertidal Sandflat, Sharon Ann Tatem
Spatial And Trophic Dynamics Of A Macrofaunal Community On A High Energy Intertidal Sandflat, Sharon Ann Tatem
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Spatial and trophic interactions between macrofaunal species were studied in a high energy intertidal system during spring-summer low tides. Bioturbation by the enteropneust hemichordate, Balanoglossus aurantiacus (Girad), as evidenced by large fecal mounds, was a conspicuous feature on the sandflat Sediment characteristics were compared between ambient (non-fecal) and B. aurantiacus fecal mound types (fresh-oxidized, fresh-reduced, aged-oxidized, and aged-reduced). Fecal material was differentiated by age based on the presence or absence of mucus and the time of fecal deposition. The color of fecal material was used to assign oxidative state. Multiple isotopes (carbon, nitrogen, sulfur) were used to determine the origins …
