A Longitudinal Examination Of The Influences Of Family Processes And Demographic Variables On Adolescent Weight, Jessica Lee Price Apr 2008

A Longitudinal Examination Of The Influences Of Family Processes And Demographic Variables On Adolescent Weight, Jessica Lee Price

Theses and Dissertations

Nationally representative studies estimate that almost one in five adolescents in the United States is overweight. This is a major concern for individuals' physical and psychological health and the overall economy in terms of health care costs and loss of productivity. The approach of this study was to understand adolescent overweight as influenced by family processes including: parent-adolescent relationship, monitoring or parental knowledge, control, family meals, and parenting styles. Race, sex, family structure, income, and mother Body Mass Index (BMI) were also included. A sub-sample of 4,688 adolescents from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 was used to address …

Nonlinear Source-Filter Coupling In Phonation: Vocal Exercises, Ingo Titze, Tobias Riede, Peter Popolo Apr 2008

Nonlinear Source-Filter Coupling In Phonation: Vocal Exercises, Ingo Titze, Tobias Riede, Peter Popolo

Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Nonlinear source-filter coupling has been demonstrated in computer simulations, in excised larynx experiments, and in physical models, but not in a consistent and unequivocal way in natural human phonations. Eighteen subjects (nine adult males and nine adult females) performed three vocal exercises that represented a combination of various fundamental frequency and formant glides. The goal of this study was to pinpoint the proportion of source instabilities that are due to nonlinear source-tract coupling. It was hypothesized that vocal fold vibration is maximally destabilized when F0 crosses F1, where the acoustic load changes dramatically. A companion paper provides the theoretical underpinnings. …

Biological Functions Of The Novel Lysophosphatidic Acid (Lpa) Receptor, Lpa4/P2y9/Gpr23, Peilun Lee Apr 2008

Biological Functions Of The Novel Lysophosphatidic Acid (Lpa) Receptor, Lpa4/P2y9/Gpr23, Peilun Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), a naturally occurring phospholipid present in serum and malignant effusions, elicits diverse biological functions through binding and activating specific cell surface G-protein coupled receptors. In addition to the conventional LPA1/Edg2, LPA2/Edg4 and LPA3/Edg7 receptors of the endothelial differentiation gene (Edg) family, LPA4/p2y9/GPR23 of the purinergic receptor family and the related LPA5/GPR92 and LPA6/p2y5 have been identified as novel LPA receptors. These newly identified LPA receptors are structurally distant from the Edg LPA1-3 receptors and couple to Gq, G12/13 and probably Gs subunits. However, the roles of the LPA4-6 receptors in LPA signal transduction and physiology are poorly …

Local Bacteriological Survey: Isolation And Characterization Of Bacteria In Two Lynchburg Parks, Rachel S. Hassenpflug Apr 2008

Local Bacteriological Survey: Isolation And Characterization Of Bacteria In Two Lynchburg Parks, Rachel S. Hassenpflug

Senior Honors Theses

Water samples were collected from the bodies of water at Peaks View Park and Percival’s Isle Park in Lynchburg, Virginia in two separate trials per collection site. The samples were filtered to isolate bacteria present in the water. The filters were placed on Trypticase Soy Agar (TSA) and Eosin Methylene Blue (EMB) plates and incubated to obtain colony counts of the bacteria. Subsequently, distinct colonies were selected from the filtration plates and streaked for isolation. Isolates were subjected to a variety of analytical methods and thereby identified by genus and species. Fifteen different species were identified from twenty-three different samples. …

Susceptibility Of Chlamydia Trachomatis To The Excipient Hydroxy-Ethylcellulose: Ph And Concentration Dependence Of Antimicrobial Activity, Ali A. Abdul-Sater, David M. Ojcius, M. P. Meyer Apr 2008

Susceptibility Of Chlamydia Trachomatis To The Excipient Hydroxy-Ethylcellulose: Ph And Concentration Dependence Of Antimicrobial Activity, Ali A. Abdul-Sater, David M. Ojcius, M. P. Meyer

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is used as a neutral excipient in microbicides used against sexually transmitted pathogens. However, HEC inhibits the infection of cervical epithelial cells by Chlamydia trachomatis at pH 5 in a concentration-dependent manner. At pH 7, infection is inversely dependent on the concentration of HEC, possibly due to pH-dependent calcium sequestration.

Development Of An Affinity Silica Monolith Containing Human Serum Albumin For Chiral Separations, Rangan Mallik, David S. Hage Apr 2008

Development Of An Affinity Silica Monolith Containing Human Serum Albumin For Chiral Separations, Rangan Mallik, David S. Hage

David Hage Publications

An affinity monolith based on silica and containing immobilized human serum albumin (HSA) was developed and evaluated in terms of its binding, efficiency and selectivity in chiral separations. The results were compared with data obtained for the same protein when used as a chiral stationary phase with HPLC-grade silica particles or a monolith based on a copolymer of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and ethylene dimethacrylate (EDMA). The surface coverage of HSA in the silica monolith was similar to values obtained with silica particles and a GMA/EDMA monolith. However, the higher surface area of the silica monolith gave a material that contained …

Protein Phosphorylation And A Novel Phosphatase In The Cyanobacterium Anabaena, Robert A. Mullis Jr. Apr 2008

Protein Phosphorylation And A Novel Phosphatase In The Cyanobacterium Anabaena, Robert A. Mullis Jr.

Senior Honors Theses

The focus of this paper is a dual-specific protein phosphatase (DSP) previously found in the periplasm of the cyanobacterium Anabaena PCC 7120 that may regulate circadian rhythms in that organism. To fully understand the topic, summaries of enzyme action, cyanobacteria, circadian rhythms, and phosphorylation cycles are required and therefore discussed in this report before the presentation of previous and current laboratory research centered on the phosphatase.

A continuous cyanobacterial culture was maintained while cells were collected for harvesting periplasm. Tests to determine size, enzyme activity, and protein content were performed on the periplasm of the bacterial cells. Initial findings revealed …

Implementing Mass Nutrient Balance Procedures On Swine Production Facilities, Richard Koelsch, Alan Sutton Apr 2008

Implementing Mass Nutrient Balance Procedures On Swine Production Facilities, Richard Koelsch, Alan Sutton

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Whole Farm Nutrient Balance (WFNB) approaches have been used to provide a measure of environmental performance (Aarts et al., 1992; Lanyon and Beegle, 1993; Klausner, 1995). Whole farm balance concepts are used as part of the Netherlands Mineral Accounting System public policy that includes compulsory mineral input and output reports from livestock farms and levies for excess imbalances (Jongbloed and Lenis, 1998). Procedures for measuring WFNB will be followed in measurements made on commercial swine facilities for 2006 and 2007. The conclusions developed based upon data from 13 for 2006 include:

  • On average, the participating swine producers import 1.5 units …
