Mine-Clearance Activities And Ansa Participation: An Analysis, Sadi Caysi

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Effective mine action requires numerous actors to peacefully collaborate: governmental and nongovernmental, international and local. Armed non-state actors (ANSA) that operate beyond central control, such as rebel opposition groups and paramilitary organizations, and private defense companies can often provide necessary contributions to mine action. Understanding ANSAs allows humanitarian organizations to communicate, cooperate and avoid conflict.

National Conference on Feral Hogs (2008)

This study was conducted on Lowndes County Wildlife Management Area (WMA), Alabama to assess the survival, home ranges, and habitat preferences of feral pigs during high and low hunting pressure seasons. For the study, two six-month seasons were defined (high pressure hunting or low pressure hunting) based on the number of hunters that entered the woods on the WMA. We collared twenty-four pigs to determine home range and habitat use from 1 February 2005-31 January 2006 on Lowndes County WMA. Seventeen collared pigs had an average home range of 403.6 ± 65.6 ha in the low pressure season, and 11 …

Feral Hog Management: Typing Performance Measures To Resources Protected, Michael J. Bodenchuk

National Conference on Feral Hogs (2008)

Feral hogs impact a number of resources including agricultural crops, wildlife, rangelands and watersheds. Additionally, feral hogs pose a disease risk to domestic livestock and humans. The Texas Wildlife Services Program (TWSP) is responsible for managing damage to these and other categories of resources. TWSP is developing performance measures specific to the resource protected which allows for better decisions regarding the intensity of control needed. Conflicts discussed include human and livestock diseases, agricultural crops, rangeland, wildlife predation and competition with native wildlife. Performance measures for each resource will be discussed.

A large, negative ΔCp of DNA binding is a thermodynamic property of the majority of sequence-specific DNA-protein interactions, and a common, but not universal property of non-sequence-specific DNA binding. In a recent study of the binding of Taq polymerase to DNA, we showed that both the full-length polymerase and its "Klentaq" large fragment bind to primed-template DNA with significant negative heat capacities. Herein, we have extended this analysis by analyzing this data for temperature-variable heat capacity effects (ΔΔCp), and have similarly analyzed an additional 47 protein-DNA binding pairs from the scientific literature. Over half of the systems examined can be …

Faculty Publications

Homocysteine thiolactone-induced protein modification (HTPM) is a unique post-translational protein modification that is recognized as an emergent biomarker for cardiovascular disease. HTPM involves the site-specific acylation of proteins at lysine residues by homocysteine thiolactone (HTL) to produce protein homocystamide, which has been found at elevated levels in patients with coronary heart disease. Herein, we report the development of a novel gold nanoparticle (GNP) biochemical sensor for detection of protein homocystamide in an in vitro serum protein-based model system. Human serum albumin (HSA) and human sera were subjected to HTPM in vitro to produce HSA-homocystamide or serum protein homocystamide, respectively, which …

1. Plant communities in natural ecosystems are changing and species are being lost due to anthropogenic impacts including global warming and increasing nitrogen (N) deposition. We removed dominant species, combinations of species and entire functional types from Alaskan tussock tundra, in the presence and absence of fertilization, to examine the effects of non-random species loss on plant interactions and ecosystem functioning.

2. After 6 years, growth of remaining species had compensated for biomass loss due to removal in all treatments except the combined removal of moss, Betula nana and Ledum palustre (MBL), which removed the most biomass. Total vascular plant …

Effects Of Predation Risk, Density And Disease On Energy Efficiency In A Larval Anuran, Sarah Crane Apr 2008

Effects Of Predation Risk, Density And Disease On Energy Efficiency In A Larval Anuran, Sarah Crane

Theses and Dissertations

Predation, density and disease affect behavior, morphology and growth. There is a lack of information on how these changes relate to efficiency of energy transfer in anuran larvae, although previous studies suggest that predation should decrease and competition should increase efficiency. Using a 2 x 2 factorial design, we manipulated predation presence and larval density to test how predation risk and density affect energy efficiency. During the experiment, approximately half of the tadpoles were infected by an unknown disease. Neither predation risk nor density affected assimilation or growth efficiency, despite changes in growth and development. Disease, however, decreased gut length …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Three experiments investigated the ability and means by which Florida manatees determine sound source directionality. An eight-choice discrimination paradigm determined the sound localization abilities of two manatees within a 360° array of speakers. Five conditions were tested including a 3,000 and 200 ms, 95 dB, 0.2-24 kHz signal, a 3,000 ms, 80 dB, 18-24 kHz signal, a 3000 ms, 110 dB, 0.2-1.5 kHz signal and a 200 ms, 101 dB, 4 kHz tonal signal. A sixth condition attenuated the level of the 3,000 ms, 95 dB, 0.2-24 kHz signal in 3 dB increments until accuracy reached 75%. Subjects performed above …

Rapid Evolution In Introduced Species, ‘Invasive Traits’ And Recipient Communities: Challenges For Predicting Invasive Potential, Kenneth D. Whitney, Christopher A. Gabler Apr 2008

Rapid Evolution In Introduced Species, ‘Invasive Traits’ And Recipient Communities: Challenges For Predicting Invasive Potential, Kenneth D. Whitney, Christopher A. Gabler

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

The damaging effects of invasive organisms have triggered the development of Invasive Species Predictive Schemes (ISPS). These schemes evaluate biological and historical characteristics of species and prioritize those that should be the focus of exclusion, quarantine, and/or control. However, it is not clear how commonly these schemes take microevolutionary considerations into account. We review the recent literature and find that rapid evolutionary changes are common during invasions. These evolutionary changes include rapid adaptation of invaders to new environments, effects of hybridization, and evolution in recipient communities. Strikingly, we document 38 species in which the specific traits commonly associated with invasive …

Open access, or the idea anyway, came to life nearly a decade and a half ago. Now almost fifteen years later, we’re still talking about it, still paying exorbitant amounts for periodicals, or their still relatively new counterparts, electronic aggregate databases. Experts tell me that fifteen years is not enough time for a good idea to catch on. I guess that’s the way it is with Murphy’s Law: bad ideas catch on instantly while good ideas come and go, most never seeing the light of day.

Incorporation Of Genetic Pathway Information Into Analysis Of Multivariate Gene Expression Data, Zhi Wei, Jane E. Minturn, Eric Rappaport, Garrett Brodeur, Hongzhe Li

UPenn Biostatistics Working Papers

Abstract: Multivariate microarray gene expression data are commonly collected to study the genomic responses under ordered conditions such as over increasing/decreasing dose levels or over time during biological processes. One important question from such multivariate gene expression experiments is to identify genes that show different expression patterns over treatment dosages or over time and pathways that are perturbed during a given biological process. In this paper, we develop a hidden Markov random field model for multivariate expression data in order to identify genes and subnetworks that are related to biological processes, where the dependency of the differential expression patterns of …

Quantum Simulation: Solving Schrödinger Equation On A Quantum Computer, Hefeng Wang, Sabre Kais, Alan Aspuru-Guzik

Birck Poster Sessions

Using the MCSCF wave function as the initial guess can improve the success probability dramatically, even just a few CSFs.

The method can be generalized to general MRCI scheme and the entire potential energy surface can be explored for ground state and excited states.

Instead of starting from a single element as in the HF wave function, MCSCF method starts from a small matrix. This makes the evolution safer and faster.

The idea can be generalized to Finite element method and any numerical method.

Water-Soluble Iron Oxide Nanoparticles For Nanomedicine, Christy L. Cooper, Lisa M. Reece, J Key, Donald E. Bergstrom, James F. Leary

Birck Poster Sessions

Monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticles (MION) are easily synthesized in organic solvents for industrial applications. However, biological applications require that the particles by readily dispersed in aqueous solutions. To improve their dispersion in aqueous solution, MION particles can be conjugated to water soluble polymers. These water soluble particles can then be used for nanomedicine, which utilizes nanometer scale constructs to treat diseases at the cellular level. Here we report the synthesis of a monodisperse iron oxide nanoparticle construct for breast cancer applications.
