Validation Of The Social Communication Questionnaire (Scq) In A Hispanic Sample: Understanding The Impact Of Expressed Emotion, Vanessa Gonzalez Apr 2008

Validation Of The Social Communication Questionnaire (Scq) In A Hispanic Sample: Understanding The Impact Of Expressed Emotion, Vanessa Gonzalez

Open Access Dissertations

The SCQ is a popular screener for ASDs derived from the gold-standard diagnostic interview. This study examined the validity of the SCQ in a Hispanic sample. Additionally, the mother's expressed emotion toward her child with ASD was examined. Participants included 217 Hispanic and non-Hispanic white mothers of children with and without ASDs ages 4-10. The actual diagnostic status of all children was determined using a historical review of records. ROC curve analysis yielded much lower sensitivity and specificity than the original validation study, with very little difference found between the 15 and 22 cutoffs. A cutoff score of 12 performed …

Nurses, Patients, Physicians, And Science: Changing Nursing Ideals In The United States, 1924-1955, Lisa Schuelke Apr 2008

Nurses, Patients, Physicians, And Science: Changing Nursing Ideals In The United States, 1924-1955, Lisa Schuelke

James A. Rawley Graduate Conference in the Humanities

White nurses employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) between 1924 and 1955 were particularly attracted to scientific methods of nursing practice and medical research. The rising emphasis on science in early twentieth-century America shaped the ways that nurses carried out procedures and responded to demanding jobs. Science, however, also represented excitement, a journey into a new world, and an opportunity to challenge old ideas about nurses’ place on the medical ladder. As new women, they were less likely to accept male physicians’ notions of superiority, and they demonstrated this by pushing the boundaries between nursing practice and physicians’ …

The Effects Of Gender On Small Businesses: A Case Study Of Kasigau, Kenya, Leslie Abell, Jerry Daday Apr 2008

The Effects Of Gender On Small Businesses: A Case Study Of Kasigau, Kenya, Leslie Abell, Jerry Daday

Sociology Faculty Presentations

Small businesses are seen as an agent of economic growth in developing countries. Recently, the idea of micro-lending has received increased attention due to its promising effects on employment and personal economic growth in rural developing areas. However, we lack an in depth understanding of how male and female business owners differ.

In the summer of 2007, our research group from Western Kentucky University spent three and a half weeks in a small rural area of Kenya, Africa. This area called Kasigau was situated at the base of Mount Kasigau in eastern Kenya. During our time there, we surveyed the …

Pesticides In Rain In Four Agricultural Watersheds In The United States, Jason R. Vogel, Michael S. Majewski, Paul D. Capel

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Rainfall samples were collected during the 2003 and 2004 growing seasons at four agricultural locales across the USA in Maryland, Indiana, Nebraska, and California. The samples were analyzed for 21 insecticides, 18 herbicides, three fungicides, and 40 pesticide degradates. Data from all sites combined show that 7 of the 10 most frequently detected pesticides were herbicides, with atrazine (70%) and metolachlor (83%) detected at every site. Dacthal, acetochlor, simazine, alachlor, and pendimethalin were detected in more than 50% of the samples. Chlorpyrifos, carbaryl, and diazinon were the only insecticides among the 10 most frequently detected compounds. Of the remaining pesticide …

War And Memory: The Creation Of The American Memory Of The Atomic Bombings And The End Of The War In The Pacific, Michael Mishler Apr 2008

War And Memory: The Creation Of The American Memory Of The Atomic Bombings And The End Of The War In The Pacific, Michael Mishler

James A. Rawley Graduate Conference in the Humanities

Much has been written about the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, however, an element often overlooked in the history of these events is the way in which an official narrative of them was created in the minds of the American public. This paper examines how this official narrative and consequently memory of the bombings was formed. To do this newspaper articles were analyzed from the first published reports of the bombings in the American press up to recent stories regarding the bombings. Through the analysis of these reports it becomes clear that American memory of the bombings have three …

Indians, “Esquimaux,” And Race: Identity And Community In The Lands West Of Hudson’S Bay In The Eighteenth Century, Strother Roberts Apr 2008

Indians, “Esquimaux,” And Race: Identity And Community In The Lands West Of Hudson’S Bay In The Eighteenth Century, Strother Roberts

James A. Rawley Graduate Conference in the Humanities

This paper proposes that a cross-tribal sense of belonging, similar to modern conceptions of racism, facilitated the formation of multi-ethnic communities among the Indian populations living to the west of Hudson’s Bay in the eighteenth century.

Based upon observations made over the course of a century by employees of the Hudson’s Bay Company regarding the attitudes held by their Native American trading partners towards the region’s Inuit populations, this paper concludes that Indians living to the west of Hudson’s Bay in the eighteenth century constructed an inclusive trans-Indian sense of identity based, at least in part, on the exclusion of …

Americanization Versus Open Society: Answering The Challenge Of Multicultural Education, Svetlana Rasmussen Apr 2008

Americanization Versus Open Society: Answering The Challenge Of Multicultural Education, Svetlana Rasmussen

James A. Rawley Graduate Conference in the Humanities

American education theory in the twentieth century is characterized by a split between proponents of assimilation, Americanization, and conformity, on the one hand, and proponents of diversity, cultural pluralism, and open society, on the other. The Progressive movement of the turn of the twentieth century espoused an American cosmopolitanism built on the basis of Anglo-American culture, yet ironically its simultaneous support for the equality of the cultures of immigrants made possible the further development of pluralist ideas. Horace M. Kallen in the 1920s introduced the idea of preservation of differences, a pluralism of cultures as opposed to cosmopolitanism, that presumed …

Transport And Fate Of Nitrate At The Ground-Water/Surface-Water Interface, Larry J. Puckett, Celia Zamora, Hedeff Essaid, John T. Wilson, Henry M. Johnson, Michael Brayton, Jason R. Vogel Apr 2008

Transport And Fate Of Nitrate At The Ground-Water/Surface-Water Interface, Larry J. Puckett, Celia Zamora, Hedeff Essaid, John T. Wilson, Henry M. Johnson, Michael Brayton, Jason R. Vogel

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Although numerous studies of hyporheic exchange and denitrification have been conducted in pristine, high-gradient streams, few studies of this type have been conducted in nutrient-rich, low-gradient streams. This is a particularly important subject given the interest in nitrogen (N) inputs to the Gulf of Mexico and other eutrophic aquatic systems. A combination of hydrologic, mineralogical, chemical, dissolved gas, and isotopic data were used to determine the processes controlling transport and fate of 3− in streambeds at five sites across the USA. Water samples were collected from streambeds at depths ranging from 0.3 to 3 m at three to five …

Receptor Selective Coactivators:Characterization Of A Novel Protein-Protein Interaction Module In Steroid Hormone Receptor Signaling, Sarath C. Dhananjayan Apr 2008

Receptor Selective Coactivators:Characterization Of A Novel Protein-Protein Interaction Module In Steroid Hormone Receptor Signaling, Sarath C. Dhananjayan

Open Access Dissertations

WW-domain binding protein-2 (WBP-2) was cloned as an E6-associated protein (E6-AP) interacting protein and its role in steroid hormone receptor (SHR) function was investigated. We show that WBP-2 differs from other SHR coactivators, as it specifically enhanced the transactivation functions of progesterone receptor (PR) and estrogen receptor (ER alpha), whereas it had no significant effect on the androgen receptor, glucocorticoid receptor or the activation functions of p53 or VP-16. We also demonstrated that, like other well characterized coactivators, WBP-2 contains an intrinsic activation domain. Depletion of endogenous WBP-2 with small interfering RNAs indicated that normal physiological protein level of WBP-2 …

W(H)Ither Fossils? Studying Morphological Character Evolution In The Age Of Molecular Sequences, Elizabeth J. Hermsen, Jonathan R. Hendricks Apr 2008

W(H)Ither Fossils? Studying Morphological Character Evolution In The Age Of Molecular Sequences, Elizabeth J. Hermsen, Jonathan R. Hendricks

Faculty Publications

A major challenge in the post-genomics era will be to integrate molecular sequence data from extant organisms with morphological data from fossil and extant taxa into a single, coherent picture of phylogenetic relationships; only then will these phylogenetic hypotheses be effectively applied to the study of morphological character evolution. At least two analytical approaches to solving this problem have been utilized: (1) simultaneous analysis of molecular sequence and morphological data with fossil taxa included as terminals in the analysis, and (2) the molecular scaffold approach, in which morphological data are analyzed over a molecular backbone (with constraints that force extant …

Assessment Of A Non-Invasive High-Throughput Classifier For Behaviours Associated With Sleep And Wake In Mice, Kevin D. Donohue, Dharshan C. Medonza, Eli R. Crane, Bruce F. O'Hara Apr 2008

Assessment Of A Non-Invasive High-Throughput Classifier For Behaviours Associated With Sleep And Wake In Mice, Kevin D. Donohue, Dharshan C. Medonza, Eli R. Crane, Bruce F. O'Hara

Biology Faculty Publications

This work presents a non-invasive high-throughput system for automatically detecting characteristic behaviours in mice over extended periods of time, useful for phenotyping experiments. The system classifies time intervals on the order of 2 to 4 seconds as corresponding to motions consistent with either active wake or inactivity associated with sleep. A single Polyvinylidine Difluoride (PVDF) sensor on the cage floor generates signals from motion resulting in pressure. This paper develops a linear classifier based on robust features extracted from normalized power spectra and autocorrelation functions, as well as novel features from the collapsed average (autocorrelation of complex spectrum), which characterize …
