The Development And Application Of Stable Oxygen And Hydrogen Isotope Analyses Of Chironomidae (Diptera) As Indicators Of Past Environmental Change, Yiming Wang Apr 2008

The Development And Application Of Stable Oxygen And Hydrogen Isotope Analyses Of Chironomidae (Diptera) As Indicators Of Past Environmental Change, Yiming Wang

Geosciences

Environmental change continues to be of increasing interest to scientists in all disciplines, and there is a paramount need to gain a comprehensive understanding of the impacts of environmental change in the past to better predict the future. A challenge associated with interpreting past change is a lack of reliable proxies to infer past environmental conditions preserved in the fossil record. My research has been dedicated to developing techniques associated with analyzing the stable oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition (delta18O and deltaD) of subfossil chironomid (Chironomidea: Diptera) headcapsules (primarily composed of chitin) preserved in lake sediments as a new proxy …

Modeling Future Sea Level Rise From Melting Glaciers, Valentina Radic Apr 2008

Modeling Future Sea Level Rise From Melting Glaciers, Valentina Radic

Geosciences

Melting mountain glaciers and ice caps (MG&IC) are the second largest contributor to rising sea level after thermal expansion of the oceans and are likely to remain the dominant glaciological contributor to rising sea level in the 21st century. The aim of this work is to project 21st century volume changes of all MG&IC and to provide systematic analysis of uncertainties originating from different sources in the calculation. I provide an ensemble of 21st century volume projections for all MG&IC from the World Glacier Inventory by modeling the surface mass balance coupled with volume-area-length scaling and forced with temperature and …

The Anchor, Volume 121.21: April 16, 2008, Hope College

The Anchor: 2008

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Vested Rights: Do Land Developers Need More Protection?, John R. Nolon, Jessica A. Bacher Apr 2008

Vested Rights: Do Land Developers Need More Protection?, John R. Nolon, Jessica A. Bacher

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The general doctrine of vested rights protects developers from changes in zoning after they have received a valid building permit. This article explains the two varieties of vested rights laws New York: statutory, and common law. Also discussed, is a new proposal for vested rights legislation that would increase protection for developers over the existing laws. The article closes by citing of some of the concerns with vested rights such as the single integrated project theory, losing vested rights by abandonment, and the equitable estoppel rule.

Duplicate Gene Expression In Allopolyploid Gossypium Reveals Two Temporally Distinct Phases Of Expression Evolution, Joshua Udall, Lex E. Flagel, Dan Nettleton, Jonathan F. Wendel

Faculty Publications

Polyploidy has played a prominent role in shaping the genomic architecture of the angiosperms. Through allopolyploidization, several modern Gossypium (cotton) species contain two divergent, although largely redundant genomes. Owing to this redundancy, these genomes can play host to an array of evolutionary processes that act on duplicate genes. Results- We compared homoeolog (genes duplicated by polyploidy) contributions to the transcriptome of a natural allopolyploid and a synthetic interspecific F1 hybrid, both derived from a merger between diploid species from the Gossypium A-genome and D-genome groups. Relative levels of A- and D-genome contributions to the petal transcriptome were determined for 1,383 …

Mine Action And The Environment, Faiz Paktian Apr 2008

Mine Action And The Environment, Faiz Paktian

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

While global warming is a hot environmental topic these days and scientists agree that unless we act soon to significantly reduce global pollution, average temperatures will continue to rise, causing heat waves, rising sea levels, droughts and wildfires. It is also important to look at mine-action procedures and activities to ensure our industry is in compliance with the world's requirements on environment protection. There is perhaps a need, more than ever before, to remind national mine-action authorities and demining organisations of their responsibility to ensure that demining operations not only be carried out in a safe, effective and efficient manner, …

Dioxidobis(2-Oxo-1,2-Dihydropyridin-3-Olato)Molybdenum(Vi), Manoj Trivedi, Daya Pandey, Nigam Rath

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

In the title compound, [Mo(C5H4NO2)2O2], the MoVI atom exhibits a distorted octahedral coordination geometry formed by two terminal oxo ligands and two monoanionic O,O-bidentate pyridinone ligands. The two terminal oxo ligands lie in a cis arrangement, the ketonic O atoms of the pyridinone ligands are coordinated trans to the oxo ligands and the deprotonated hydroxyl O atoms are located trans to each other. The crystal structure contains intermolecular N-H...O hydrogen bonds, C-H...O contacts and face-to-face [pi]-[pi] stacking interactions with an interplanar separation of 3.25 (1) Å.
