Examining Emotional Reactivity To Daily Events In Major And Minor Depression, Lauren M. Bylsma Apr 2008

Examining Emotional Reactivity To Daily Events In Major And Minor Depression, Lauren M. Bylsma

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a debilitating disorder characterized by significant mood disturbance. In laboratory studies, MDD has been characterized by both blunted positive (PER) and negative emotional reactivity (NER). However, mood disordered persons' emotional reactivity has rarely been studied in naturalistic settings, and it is unknown how less severe forms of depression relate to emotional reactivity. To address these issues, the current study utilized two naturalistic sampling methods (the Day Reconstruction Method and the Experience Sampling Method) to examine PER and NER to daily life events in 35 individuals currently experiencing a major depressive episode (MDD), 26 individuals currently …

Tampa Bay Interagency Seagrass Monitoring Program A Synopsis Of Seagrass Trends From 1997-2006, Walt Avery, Roger Johansson

Reports

This paper presents trends in percent frequency of occurrence (PFOC) of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV). PFOC is defined as the number of times a seagrass or attached alga species is found within a specific data set of meter square placements divided by the total number of meter square placements within that data set. The data sets comprised of all meter square placements grouped either by management area (MA), bay subsection, or Tampa Bay as a whole. Ancillary data of SAV species annual PFOC, abundance, short shoot density (SSDm-2), and canopy height (cm) are presented in the appendix.

Lost In Translation : Ideas Of Population Health Determinants In The American Policy Arena, Maria Gilson Sistrom Apr 2008

Lost In Translation : Ideas Of Population Health Determinants In The American Policy Arena, Maria Gilson Sistrom

Dissertations and Theses

A growing body of research reveals the determinants of population health to be social, political and economic, yet health policy in the United States remains largely individualistic (Evans, Barer, & Marmor, 1994). At the same time research is revealing these structural determinants of health, measures of population health in the United States are worsening in comparison to other developed countries (Bezruchka, 2001). Explanations for this include the influence of culture, medical, public health and governmental institutions and historic development and processes on health policy. Researchers hold to a view of the policy process that is informed by science, yet policy …

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDCM) constitutes a large portion of patients with heart failure of unknown etiology. Up to 50% of all transplant recipients carry this clinical diagnosis. Female-specific gene expression in IDCM has not been explored. We report sex-related differences in the gene expression profile of ventricular myocardium from patients undergoing cardiac transplantation. We produced and sequenced subtractive cDNA libraries, using human left ventricular myocardium obtained from male transplant recipients with IDCM and nonfailing human heart donors. With the resulting sequence data, we generated a custom human heart failure microarray for IDCM containing 1,145 cardiac-specific oligonucleotide probes. This array was …

Multimetric Bioassessment Of Florida's Peace River: Exploring Abiotic And Biotic Relationships, Philipp J. Conner Apr 2008

Multimetric Bioassessment Of Florida's Peace River: Exploring Abiotic And Biotic Relationships, Philipp J. Conner

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Florida's Rivers have undergone substantial change since the early 201 h century. Urbanization, mass agriculture, and phosphate mining have affected many watersheds across Florida, and the Peace River Watershed is no exception (Nordlie 1990). With altered flow patterns, agricultural and mining runoff, and loss of habitat, the . environmental integrity of the Peace River is in decline (Florida Department of Environmental Protection [FDEP] 2007). As environmental integrity of an aquatic system such as the Peace River declines, environmental monitoring and analysis becomes critical. Monitoring of water quality is traditionally abiotic and chemical and includes measurements of organic pollutants, turbidity, pH, …

Minding Our Ps And Qs - Issues Of Property, Provenance And Quality In Institutional Repositories, Bruce White Apr 2008

Minding Our Ps And Qs - Issues Of Property, Provenance And Quality In Institutional Repositories, Bruce White

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The development of institutional repositories has opened the path to the mass availability of peer-reviewed scholarly information and the extension of information democracy to the academic domain. A secondary space of free-to-all documents has begun to parallel the hitherto-closed world of journal publishing and many publishers have consented to the inclusion of copyrighted documents in digital repositories, although frequently specifying that a version other than the formally-published one be used. This paper will conceptually

examine the complex interplay of rights, permissions and versions between publishers and repositories, focussing on the New Zealand situation and the challenges faced by university repositories …

Becoming The Authoritative Source: Taking Repositiories Centre Stage, Howard Amos, Tom Ruthven

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Institutional repositories can be a storehouse of the research of an institution. There are many internal and external needs to find, use and report on the entirety or parts of an institution’s research output.

This paper examines how to harness environmental factors to make an institutional repository the central and authoritative source of the research material output of a university. How to take it from “a place” to put research to making it “the place” and moving it from a nice-to-have service to one with a solid, sustainable future, one that the academic community values, supports and uses rather than …

Tuberculosis In Developing Nations: Why New Drugs Need To Be Researched And Developed, Sarah Ott Apr 2008

Tuberculosis In Developing Nations: Why New Drugs Need To Be Researched And Developed, Sarah Ott

Senior Honors Theses

Pharmacologic treatment for tuberculosis is widely available in developing nations, and is often financed by the governments of these countries. Treatment however can be highly toxic and require a lengthy duration of therapy. There are now many strains of tuberculosis that are drug resistant. People in impoverished nations frequently cannot afford to pay for transportation to and from treatment facilities. Research and development of new tuberculosis drugs is necessary given the presence of resistance and toxicity of the existing drugs. Newer agents that require shorter treatment duration with decreased toxicity and increased efficacy are most desirable and needed in developing …

Method Of Preparing A Chiral Substrate Surface By Electrodeposition, Jay A. Switzer, Hiten M. Kothari, Shuji Nakanishi, Eric W. Bohannan

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

A solid substrate comprising a surface comprising an achiral array of atoms having thereupon a chiral metal oxide surface. The chiral metal oxide surface is prepared by electrodeposition of a chiral metal oxide array from a solution of a chiral salt of the metal. In one embodiment, chiral CuO is grown on achiral Au(001) by epitaxial electrodeposition. The handedness of the film is determined by the specific enantiomer of tartrate ion in the deposition solution. (R,R)- tartrate produces an S—CuO(l 1 T) film, while (S,S)-tartrate produces an R—CuO(Tl 1) film. These chiral CuO films are enantiospecific for the electrochemical oxidation …

Evolution Of Dioecy In Echinocereus Coccineus: Relative Influence Of Pollinators, Resources And Elevation Over Multiple Spatial Scales, Summer Ann Scobell Apr 2008

Evolution Of Dioecy In Echinocereus Coccineus: Relative Influence Of Pollinators, Resources And Elevation Over Multiple Spatial Scales, Summer Ann Scobell

Open Access Dissertations

"Why have separate sexes?" is a fundamental question in biology and has been investigated intensively since Darwin first proposed two hypotheses: Separate sexes evolve 1) to avoid detrimental effects of self-fertilization or 2) to improve allocation of scarce resources to each sex's reproductive function. In animal-pollinated plants dioecy is hypothesized to be favored when small, generalized pollinators predominate because they increase self-fertilization rates of plants. I concurrently tested Darwin's hypotheses using Echinocereus coccineus (Cactaceae). I found, as predicted, when specialized pollinators (hummingbirds) were excluded from plants and only generalized pollinators (bees) visited, selfing rates of plants increased 238%. High selfing …

Factors Affecting The Catch Of Target And Bycatch Species During Pelagic Longline Fishing, Patrick Hays Rice Apr 2008

Factors Affecting The Catch Of Target And Bycatch Species During Pelagic Longline Fishing, Patrick Hays Rice

Open Access Dissertations

Recent evidence suggests that overfishing of large predatory fishes has resulted in substantial population declines and pelagic longline (PLL) fishing is a major contributor. The primary objective of this dissertation is understanding factors that affect the interactions between marine fish PLL fishing. These factors are important to determine vulnerability of bycatch and target species, especially when PLL catch and effort data are used to estimate stock abundance. Chapter 1 reviews 107 publications/reports on this topic. Results indicate that accurate characterization of PLL gear performance requires empirical measurement of horizontal and vertical gear movement; and pop-up satellite tags (PSATs) are best …

Mechanisms Underlying Frog Occupancy Patterns In A Landscape Mosaic Of Tropical Forest And Pasture, Tanya J. Hawley Apr 2008

Mechanisms Underlying Frog Occupancy Patterns In A Landscape Mosaic Of Tropical Forest And Pasture, Tanya J. Hawley

Open Access Dissertations

Habitat modification is the primary cause of amphibian population declines worldwide. Some species survive in modified habitats whereas others become restricted to small, isolated forest patches. Although many studies compare species richness and composition between modified and intact habitats, the factors and mechanisms that maintain biodiversity in these landscapes are poorly understood. I asked how life history traits and habitat features influence interspecific variation in frog occupancy patterns in tropical pasture and forest. To identify mechanisms underlying occupancy patterns, I used experiments to examine how abiotic conditions in different habitats influence the vital rates of tadpoles. I also explored whether …

Response Of A Small, Two-Strait Semi-Enclosed Sea To External Forcings, Xinglong Wu Apr 2008

Response Of A Small, Two-Strait Semi-Enclosed Sea To External Forcings, Xinglong Wu

Open Access Dissertations

Located at the northern edge of the Northern Gulf of Alaska (NGOA), Prince William Sound(PWS) is a small, two-strait semi-enclosed sea. The general ocean circulation pattern inside PWS is significantly affected by external forcings, for instance, the large-scale circulation in NGOA, atmospheric pressure and surface winds, surface heating/cooling, runoff, and tides. Motivated by multi-year experience with a well-validated, quasi-operational ocean circulation nowcast/forecast system for PWS (viz., Extended PWS Nowcast/Forecast System (EPWS/NFS)), the present study addresses some aspects of the PWS response to various external forcings, via numerical simulations. Based on the Princeton Ocean Model (POM), four numerical implementations have been …
