The Ecology Of Fear: Oviposition And Colonization In Aquatic Systems, Leeanna Pletcher Apr 2008

The Ecology Of Fear: Oviposition And Colonization In Aquatic Systems, Leeanna Pletcher

Theses and Dissertations

Amphibians and aquatic invertebrates have complex life histories that link aquatic and terrestrial food webs. It has been suggested that amphibian reproduction is an important source of carbon to some aquatic systems. This process of energy flow may be shaped by shifts in habitat selection in response to predators. We hypothesized that predators decrease colonization and oviposition of prey, reducing active inputs. Thus predation risk is expected to shift the relative amounts of active and passive subsidies. We manipulated the presence of fish predators in aquatic mesocosms. Results suggest hylid treefrog eggs and hydrophilid beetles were less abundant in predator …

Modern Nutrient Limitation And Geologic Record Of Organic Matter Sources In The Bioluminescent Bays Of Vieques, Puerto Rico, Erin Algeo Apr 2008

Modern Nutrient Limitation And Geologic Record Of Organic Matter Sources In The Bioluminescent Bays Of Vieques, Puerto Rico, Erin Algeo

Earth and Environmental Geosciences Student Honors Theses

The factors contributing to the success of the bioluminescent dinoflagellate, Pyrodinium bahamense var. bahamense in the bays of Vieques, Puerto Rico, are not fully understood, although the dinoflagellate’s success is closely tied to its environment and the nutrients within that environment. Exploring the present and past nutrient concentrations and sources of organic material within the bioluminescent bays of Vieques assists in determining the status of and potential threat to the population of Pyrodinium bahamense var. bahamense. Modern carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus nutrient concentrations were measured, primarily in the seagrass Thalassia testudinum, to evaluate the distribution and potential limitation of those …

Provenance Analysis Of The Cretaceous Hornbrook Formation Of Northern California And Southern Oregon, Emily J. Beverly Apr 2008

Provenance Analysis Of The Cretaceous Hornbrook Formation Of Northern California And Southern Oregon, Emily J. Beverly

Earth and Environmental Geosciences Student Honors Theses

The provenance of the Cretaceous Hornbrook Formation, deposited unconformably on the eastern terranes of the Klamath Mountains of northern California and southern Oregon, may prove critical to reconstructing the complex Cretaceous paleogeography of this region. Sandstone petrography from each of the five members of the Hornbrook Formation indicates a variable source region with elements from basement uplift, transitional continent, recycled orogen, and dissected arc sources. A conglomerate clast count from the Klamath River Conglomerate member is broadly consistent with sandstone petrography, but yielded more quartzite and fewer volcanic clasts than the sand-sized fraction. This reflects the different susceptibility to weathering …

Escherichia Coli And Antibiotic Resistance To Tetracycline Antibiotics, Taylor L. Dodgen Apr 2008

Escherichia Coli And Antibiotic Resistance To Tetracycline Antibiotics, Taylor L. Dodgen

Senior Honors Theses

Escherichia coli cells growing under ideal conditions are able to complete one reproduction cycle in as little as every twenty minutes. Since so many generations are able to be observed, one should theoretically be able to observe thousands of generations and determine evolution’s effects over a short period of time. In this experiment, E. coli K12 cells were cultured under ideal growth conditions but in the presence of antibiotics as a selective environmental stress in order to select for resistance. This was accomplished by serially passing colonies that were in close contact with two different, but similar antibiotics over a …

The Effect Of Personal Characteristics On The Use Of Information Sources By Social Science Researchers At The University Of Nigeria, Nsukka, C.I. Ugwu Apr 2008

The Effect Of Personal Characteristics On The Use Of Information Sources By Social Science Researchers At The University Of Nigeria, Nsukka, C.I. Ugwu

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

A study of the effect of some personal characteristics on the use of information sources by social science researchers was conducted at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Forty lecturers were surveyed using a questionnaire. Three hypotheses were evaluated through the analysis of variance and F-statistic. Multiple comparison of item means as well as group means was conducted using Scheffé's test. The results show that position and education are good predictors of information use while professional experience has little power in explaining variations in information source use. The findings of the study support the notion that information source use is a …

A Literature Review: Current Trends In Holistic Nursing, Angela J. Wolf Apr 2008

A Literature Review: Current Trends In Holistic Nursing, Angela J. Wolf

Senior Honors Theses

There is scarcity of documentation that seeks to define spirituality relating to holistic nursing; consequently, a literature review was formulated to define spirituality and guide nursing practice towards recognizing the importance of and implementation of spiritual care. By researching the current trends in peer-reviewed journals from the past three years and analyzing associated articles, this paper addresses the need for a comprehensive definition of spirituality. Key concepts such as belief, values, interconnectedness with self, others and God, energy, hope and transcendence will be analyzed, and the accumulated data will be complied into a framework that is easy for a nurse …
