Reducing Stray Radiation Dose To Patients Receiving Passively Scattered Proton Radiotherapy For Prostate Cancer, Phillip J. Taddei, Jonas D. Fontenot, Yuanshui Zheng, Dragan Mirkovic, Andrew K. Lee, Uwe Titt, Wayne D. Newhauser

Faculty Publications

Proton beam radiotherapy exposes healthy tissue to stray radiation emanating from the treatment unit and secondary radiation produced within the patient. These exposures provide no known benefit and may increase a patient's risk of developing a radiogenic second cancer. The aim of this study was to explore strategies to reduce stray radiation dose to a patient receiving a 76 Gy proton beam treatment for cancer of the prostate. The whole-body effective dose from stray radiation, E, was estimated using detailed Monte Carlo simulations of a passively scattered proton treatment unit and an anthropomorphic phantom. The predicted value of E was …

The Impact Of Adolescent Social Anxiety On Adulthood Adjustment Among Sexually Abused Girls, Madeline Anne Rakow Ivanchenko Apr 2008

The Impact Of Adolescent Social Anxiety On Adulthood Adjustment Among Sexually Abused Girls, Madeline Anne Rakow Ivanchenko

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a significant social problem that has gained increased recognition since the 1980s. The increased attention has led to a substantial body of research that documents both the high prevalence and pervasive effects of CSA. CSA is associated with a wide range of adulthood psychopathology, including major depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders, substance use, suicidal behavior, alterations in self-concept, and disruptions in interpersonal relatedness (Beichtman, Zucker, Hood, DaCosta & Cassavia, 1992; Browne & Finkelhor, 1986; Cole & Putnam, 1992; Polusny & Follette, 1995; Russell, 1986; Wilson, 2006). Sexually abused children are also at a higher …

A Central Function For Perlecan In Skeletal Muscle And Cardiovascular Development, Jason J. Zoeller, Angela Mcquillan, John Whitelock, Shiu-Ying Ho, Renato V. Iozzo Apr 2008

A Central Function For Perlecan In Skeletal Muscle And Cardiovascular Development, Jason J. Zoeller, Angela Mcquillan, John Whitelock, Shiu-Ying Ho, Renato V. Iozzo

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Perlecan's developmental functions are difficult to dissect in placental animals because perlecan disruption is embryonic lethal. In contrast to mammals, cardiovascular function is not essential for early zebrafish development because the embryos obtain adequate oxygen by diffusion. In this study, we use targeted protein depletion coupled with protein-based rescue experiments to investigate the involvement of perlecan and its C-terminal domain V/endorepellin in zebrafish development. The perlecan morphants show a severe myopathy characterized by abnormal actin filament orientation and disorganized sarcomeres, suggesting an involvement of perlecan in myopathies. In the perlecan morphants, primary intersegmental vessel sprouts, which develop through angiogenesis, fail …

Mechanistic Studies On The Electrochemistry Of Glutathione And Homocysteine, Olufemi Oyesanya Apr 2008

Mechanistic Studies On The Electrochemistry Of Glutathione And Homocysteine, Olufemi Oyesanya

Theses and Dissertations

This research work has investigated the electrochemistry of glutathione (GSH)and homocysteine (HCSH) in order to develop sensors for these biological thiols.Ru(bpy)33+ and IrCl62− have been used as mediators for the electrooxidation of GSH andHCSH because direct oxidation of these thiols is slow at most conventional electrodes. The electrochemical detection of GSH and HCSH has been pursued because of their biological roles.

Concerted proton electron transfer (CPET) and stepwise proton electron transfer(PT/ET) pathways have been observed in the electrooxidation of GSH and HCSH.Oxidation of GSH by Ru(bpy)33+ carried out in deuterated and undeuterated buffered (pH= pD …

Expression Of Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Mrna As A Function Of Age In Whole Hippocampus Preparations From Wistar Rats, Kasey C. Welch Apr 2008

Expression Of Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Mrna As A Function Of Age In Whole Hippocampus Preparations From Wistar Rats, Kasey C. Welch

Theses and Dissertations

Whole hippocampus preparations, isolated bilaterally, from untreated Wistar rats at various ages (10-90 days old) were analyzed for the mRNA expression of the alpha 2, alpha 3, alpha 4, alpha 5, alpha 7, beta 2, beta 3, and beta 4 neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunits. To do so, RNA was isolated from acutely isolated hippocampal samples, converted to cDNA by means of a reverse transcription reaction, then analyzed with quantitative real-time PCR to determine the relative levels of the mRNAs the cells were expressing at the age when the samples were obtained. The relative expression of the levels of RNA …

An Economic Analysis Of The Effects Of Steroids On Season Best Performances In Track And Field, Allison Fisher '08 Apr 2008

An Economic Analysis Of The Effects Of Steroids On Season Best Performances In Track And Field, Allison Fisher '08

Honors Projects

This paper investigates the relationship between steroids and an athlete's ability to run a season best time in track and field. Certain event groups have seen a faster drop in season bests than others. Medical research indicates which of these event groups (sprinters, distance, throwers, jumpers) would most benefit from steroids. I hypothesize that steroids allow sprinters to improve on their season bests more than other event groups. This hypothesis is based on a production theory from the economics literature where inputs such as coaching, facilities and steroids produce season best performances. Using ordinary least-squares regression, I use a dummy …

Medication Treatment And Neuropsychological Functioning In Perinatal Hiv, Monica E. Bocanegra Apr 2008

Medication Treatment And Neuropsychological Functioning In Perinatal Hiv, Monica E. Bocanegra

Open Access Dissertations

This study confirmed whether children on the current treatment of choice for HIV infection, Highly Active Antiretroviral Treatment (HAART), exhibit better immune functioning than children on earlier forms of treatment, including sole exposure to Monotherapy/Combination Therapy (Mono-Combo) and "upgrading" from Mono-Combo to HAART (Conversion). It explored whether HAART protects areas of neuropsychological functioning previously found to be compromised in children perinatally infected with HIV more effectively than these earlier treatments. This study includes a unique population (i.e., predominantly minority, low SES status, and largely bilingual), and controls for a number of treatment variables that have not been previously considered. Using …

Short And Long-Term Ramifications Of Climate Change Upon Coral Reef Ecosystems: Case Studies Across Two Oceans, Derek Paul Manzello Apr 2008

Short And Long-Term Ramifications Of Climate Change Upon Coral Reef Ecosystems: Case Studies Across Two Oceans, Derek Paul Manzello

Open Access Dissertations

World-wide coral reefs are in a state of decline as a result of many local and regional factors. Recent global mass mortalities of reef corals due to record warm sea temperatures have led researchers to consider global warming as one of the most significant threats to the persistence of coral reef ecosystems over the next 100 years. It is well established that elevated sea surface temperatures (SSTs) cause widespread coral bleaching, yet confusion lingers as to what facet of extreme temperatures is most important. Utilizing long-term in situ datasets, nine thermal stress indices were calculated and their effectiveness at segregating …

Pacific Ocean And Cenozoic Evolution Of Climate, Mitchell Lyle, John Barron, Timothy J. Bralower, Matthew Huber, Annette Olivarez Lyle, A. Christina Ravelo, David K. Rea, Paul A. Wilson Apr 2008

Pacific Ocean And Cenozoic Evolution Of Climate, Mitchell Lyle, John Barron, Timothy J. Bralower, Matthew Huber, Annette Olivarez Lyle, A. Christina Ravelo, David K. Rea, Paul A. Wilson

Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Faculty Publications

The Pacific Ocean has played a major role in climate evolution throughout the Cenozoic (65–0 Ma). It is a fundamental component of global heat transport and circulation, the dominant locus of primary productivity, and, consequently, the largest reservoir for carbon exchange between the oceans and the atmosphere. A satisfactory understanding of the Cenozoic evolutionary history of the Pacific and its impact on global climate is currently data-limited. Nevertheless, the large dynamic range of Cenozoic conditions sets the stage to greatly expand our understanding of global climate and biogeochemical cycles. Past Earth “experiments” are particularly useful to understand interactions between climate …
