Acoustical Measurement Of The Human Vocal Tract: Quantifying Speech & Throat-Singing, Bryant R. Foresman Apr 2008

Acoustical Measurement Of The Human Vocal Tract: Quantifying Speech & Throat-Singing, Bryant R. Foresman

Pomona Senior Theses

The field of biological acoustics has witnessed a steady increase in the research into overtone singing, or “throat-singing,” in which a singer utilizes resonance throughout the vocal tract to sing melodies with the overtones created by a vocal drone. Recent research has explored both how a singer vocalizes in order to obtain rich harmonics from a vocal drone, as well as how further manipulations of the vocal apparatus function to filter and amplify selected harmonics. In the field of phonetics, vowel production is quantified by measuring the frequencies of vocal tract resonances, or formants, which a speaker manipulates to voice …

Cloning And Biochemical Characterization Of The Recq Helicase And Topoisomerase Iii In Schizosaccharomyces Pombe, Rebecca Wood Apr 2008

Cloning And Biochemical Characterization Of The Recq Helicase And Topoisomerase Iii In Schizosaccharomyces Pombe, Rebecca Wood

All Theses And Dissertations

RecQ and Topoisomerase III proteins are both essential for proper chromosomal maintenance in species ranging from bacteria to humans. Due to their highly conserved nature throughout evolution, understanding their basic biochemical properties as well as their interactions together is important for understanding human health, disease, and even to provide potential evolutionary insight. S. pombe has been chosen as a model organism because little research has been done on the biochemical analysis of its RecQ homolog, Rqhl. This study shows developments in the biochemical characterization of a truncation protein of Rqh1 including AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy) Imaging, DNA binding, and ATP …

Inflammatory Regulation Of Cysteine Cathepsins, Blaine Creasy Apr 2008

Inflammatory Regulation Of Cysteine Cathepsins, Blaine Creasy

Theses and Dissertations

Cysteine cathepsins B, L and S are endosomal/lysosomal proteases that participate in numerous physiological systems. Cathepsin expression and activity are altered during various inflammatory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, neurodegenerative diseases and cancers. Early immune responses to microbial pathogens are mediated by pattern-recognition receptors, including Toll-like receptors (TLR). Signaling through TLR causes cell activation and release of inflammatory mediators, which can contribute to the severity of chronic inflammatory diseases. The impact of TLR cell activation on cathepsins B, L and S activities was investigated using live-cell enzymatic assays. Individual ligands of TLR4, TLR2 and TLR3 increased intracellular activities of the …

Incense Smoke: Clinical, Structural And Molecular Effects On Airway Disease, Ta Lin, Guha Krishnaswamy, David S. Chi Apr 2008

Incense Smoke: Clinical, Structural And Molecular Effects On Airway Disease, Ta Lin, Guha Krishnaswamy, David S. Chi

ETSU Faculty Works

In Asian countries where the Buddhism and Taoism are mainstream religions, incense burning is a daily practice. A typical composition of stick incense consists of 21% (by weight) of herbal and wood powder, 35% of fragrance material, 11% of adhesive powder, and 33% of bamboo stick. Incense smoke (fumes) contains particulate matter (PM), gas products and many organic compounds. On average, incense burning produces particulates greater than 45 mg/g burned as compared to 10 mg/g burned for cigarettes. The gas products from burning incense include CO, CO2, NO2, SO2, and others. Incense burning also produces volatile organic compounds, such as …

Narses And The Birth Of Byzantine Egypt : Imperial Policy In The Age Of Justinian, Marion W. Kruse Iii Apr 2008

Narses And The Birth Of Byzantine Egypt : Imperial Policy In The Age Of Justinian, Marion W. Kruse Iii

Honors Theses

Late Antiquity has long been portrayed as a period of transition between the classical and medieval worlds. Its history, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, has been forced to fit the contours of a transitional model, and no figure has been as ill-treated by this interpretive schema as the Emperor Justinian (r. 527-565 AD).

Justinian is known both as the last Roman and first Byzantine emperor; in fact he was neither. It is true that he ruled an empire which was both physically and intellectually the heir of Augustus' Rome and that he introduced wide-ranging reforms which were maintained by …

Distinct Timing Mechanisms Produce Discrete And Continuous Movements, Raoul Huys, Breanna E. Studenka, Nicole L. Rheaume, Raoul N. Huys, Viktor K. Jirsa

Department of Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications

The differentiation of discrete and continuous movement is one of the pillars of motor behavior classification. Discrete movements have a definite beginning and end, whereas continuous movements do not have such discriminable end points. In the past decade there has been vigorous debate whether this classification implies different control processes. This debate up until the present has been empirically based. Here, we present an unambiguous non-empirical classification based on theorems in dynamical system theory that sets discrete and continuous movements apart. Through computational simulations of representative modes of each class and topological analysis of the flow in state space, we …

Integration Host Factor Positively Regulates Virulence Gene Expression In Vibrio Cholerae, Emily Stonehouse, Gabriela Kovacikova, Ronald K. Taylor, Karen Skorupski Apr 2008

Integration Host Factor Positively Regulates Virulence Gene Expression In Vibrio Cholerae, Emily Stonehouse, Gabriela Kovacikova, Ronald K. Taylor, Karen Skorupski

Dartmouth Scholarship

Virulence gene expression in Vibrio cholerae is dependent upon a complex transcriptional cascade that is influenced by both specific and global regulators in response to environmental stimuli. Here, we report that the global regulator integration host factor (IHF) positively affects virulence gene expression in V. cholerae. Inactivation of ihfA and ihfB, the genes encoding the IHF subunits, decreased the expression levels of the two main virulence factors tcpA and ctx and prevented toxin-coregulated pilus and cholera toxin production. IHF was found to directly bind to and bend the tcpA promoter region at an IHF consensus site centered at position 162 …

Haasl, M Reza Ahmadi, Sivan Vadakkadath Meethal, Carey E. Gleason, Sterling C. Johnson, Sanjay Asthana, Richard L. Bowen, Craig S. Atwood

Research outputs pre 2011

Genetic and biochemical studies support the apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 allele as a major risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD), though ~50% of AD patients do not carry the allele. APOE transports cholesterol for luteinizing hormone (LH)-regulated steroidogenesis, and both LH and neurosteroids have been implicated in the etiology of AD. Since polymorphisms of LH beta-subunit (LHB) and its receptor (LHCGR) have not been tested for their association with AD, we scored AD and age-matched control samples for APOE genotype and 14 polymorphisms of LHB and LHCGR. Thirteen gene-gene interactions between the …

Effects Of Hemoglobin-Based Oxygen Carriers On The Vasoactivity Of The Spinotrapezius Muscle Of The Rat, Pete Meliagros Apr 2008

Effects Of Hemoglobin-Based Oxygen Carriers On The Vasoactivity Of The Spinotrapezius Muscle Of The Rat, Pete Meliagros

Theses and Dissertations

Hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs) offer a safe, more plentiful and long term alternate to blood banks. However, they have been found to increase blood pressure which can be attributed to an increase in total peripheral resistance (TPR). Lumenal nitric oxide (NO) scavenging by these HBOCs seems to be responsible for this hypertensive effect. In addition, it is believed that hemoglobin (Hb) tetramers and dimers may extravasate and consume additional nitric oxide in the perivascular and interstitial space. The purpose of the present study was to elucidate the role of NO scavenging and to confirm extravasation as a contributor to HBOC …

Bat Community Dynamics And Foraging Activity Patterns In Young Regenerating Southern Pine Plantations And Mixed Hardwood Forests, Kathryn Marie Womack Apr 2008

Bat Community Dynamics And Foraging Activity Patterns In Young Regenerating Southern Pine Plantations And Mixed Hardwood Forests, Kathryn Marie Womack

Theses & Honors Papers

Forests of the southeastern U.S. are changing rapidly in species composition and extent of forest cover due to increasing conversion to pine (Pinus sp.) plantations , intensifying management practices, and expanding urbanization and sprawl. Questions related to the impacts of these changes on wild life species are of great conservation interest and management relevance. Highly mobile species with large home ranges and complex habitat requirements , such as bats, may be especially vulnerable to increasing human modification of landscapes. However, the impacts of such modifications on bat species are poorly understood . I sought to evaluate bat community structure and …

The Draft Genome Of The Transgenic Tropical Fruit Tree Papaya ( Carica Papaya Linnaeus), Ray Ming, Shaobin Hou, Yun Feng, Qinguyi Yu, Jyothi Thimmapuram

Cyber Center Publications

Papaya, a fruit crop cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions, is known for its nutritional benefits and medicinal applications. Here we report a 3 draft genome sequence of 'SunUp' papaya, the first commercial virus-resistant transgenic fruit tree1 to be sequenced. The papaya genome is three times the size of the Arabidopsis genome, but contains fewer genes, including significantly fewer disease-resistance gene analogues. Comparison of the five sequenced genomes suggests a minimal angiosperm gene set of 13,311. A lack of recent genome duplication, atypical of other angiosperm genomes sequenced so far may account for the smaller papaya gene number in …

Using Fluorescence And Absorption Spectroscopy To Characterize High Performapce Liquid Chromatography Fractionated Cdom From West Florida Rivers, Roxanne H. Hastings

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

The chemical and optical properties of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) have been the subject of numerous studies. However, this material has not been characterized to the point at which it can be identified by compound or compound class. The complex and homogenous nature of this material makes characterization studies challenging. CDOM absorbs ultraviolet and visible radiation and is highly photo reactive. The purpose of this study is to investigate the optical properties of fractions separated by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) as well as the simple fractionation that occurs during the concentration and extraction of CDOM by C1s SEP-PAK. …
