Yes, of course I know the expression is “Don’t look,” not kicking, but our collective professional behavior makes “kicking” the more operative and appropriate verbal. More about this in due course. As an expression, “don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” comes to us from the Lain, Noli equi dentes inspicere donate. Some argue Jerome said it first in 400 A.D., in which his words, very nearly our Latin literally translated, ran, “Never inspect the teeth of a gift horse.”

Journal Articles: Psychiatry

The review presents pediatric adverse drug events from a historical perspective and focuses on selected safety issues associated with off-label use of medications for the psychiatric treatment of youth. Clinical monitoring procedures for major psychotropic drug classes are reviewed. Prior studies suggest that systematic treatment monitoring is warranted so as to both minimize risk of unexpected adverse events and exposures to ineffective treatments. Clinical trials to establish the efficacy and safety of drugs currently being used off-label in the pediatric population are needed. In the meantime, clinicians should consider the existing evidence-base for these drugs and institute close clinical monitoring.

Aquatic Ecosystem Response To Storm Water Abatement Measures In The Ravines Of The Gvsu Allendale Campus: Establishment Of Base-Line Biological Condition, Eric Snyder, Jason Nelson, Jason Drogowski, Michelle Harju

The ravine tributary streams surrounding Grand Valley State Universities Allendale campus represent unique and understudied ecosystems, worthy of significant restoration efforts and of long-lasting protection. They are variously affected by storm water runoff, representing a spectrum from severely impacted to relatively pristine. Quantitative macroinvertebrate samples taken from six streams in late June 2007, indicated that insect diversity was positively correlated to ammonium (p=0.057), while total abundance was negatively correlated to phosphate and chlorophyll-a concentration (n.s.). In addition, phosphate, nitrate, sulfate and iron concentrations were elevated in streams that experience significant storm-water runoff and these streams also tended to have …

Ground and low-lying excited electronic states of difluorodiazirine (F 2CN2) were investigated using the recently revised variant of second-order Generalized Van Vleck Perturbation theory. It was shown that the CN2 ring is retained in all the low-lying excited states and that the compound is highly multireference in nature. The results are expected to be useful in describing the mechanism of the ultraviolet photolysis of this compound. Difluorophosphaazirine (F2CNP) is isovalent with F2CN 2 and presents useful similarities and differences. In mapping the potential energy surface of F2CNP, the geometrical parameters and harmonic vibration frequencies of six new local minima, besides …

The present study was designed to characterize vascular responsiveness and leptin signaling in small mesenteric and uterine arcuate arteries in a rat model of reduced uterine perfusion pressure. The reduced uterine perfusion pressure (RUPP) model was utilized to mimic the underlying pathology of preeclampsia. The uterine arteries and abdominal aortae of pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were surgically constricted on day 14 of gestation. Systolic blood pressure measurements were obtained before and during pregnancy using a tail cuff measuring system. Weight was measured with each blood pressure evaluation. This paper introduces a web-based information management system which has been set up as a collaborative facility to allow key environmental and ecological information access for the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) in Kenting, Taiwan. The coral reef ecosystem degradation in Kenting has concerned both public and private sectors, for which a LTER team was formed to investigate the problem. A multi-functional web-based system integrates diverse data collections and analyses efforts of team members during the project span. Coral reefs worldwide are in serious decline. Underwater wireless sensor networks may be the answer to providing the persistent monitoring presence needed to obtain the data necessary to better understand how to protect these ecosystems for the future. Many advances have been made in underwater acoustic communication devices for underwater wireless sensor networks, but a major challenge that still remains is obtaining an energy efficient modem design. Background The World Trade Center (WTC) attacks exposed thousands of workers to hazardous environmental conditions and psychological trauma. In 2002, to assess the health of these workers, Congress directed the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to establish the WTC Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program. This program has established a large cohort of WTC rescue, recovery, and cleanup workers. We previously documented extensive pulmonary dysfunction in this cohort related to toxic environmental exposures. We demonstrate evidence supporting two independent hypotheses related to experimental polychondritis: (1) co-expression of a “nonpathogenic” HLA-DQ allele with a “pathogenic” allele results in enhanced susceptibility to disease; and (2) age related immunological changes allow for the spontaneous onset of disease. Relapsing polychondritis (RP), a human autoimmune disease of unknown etiology in which cartilaginous sites are destroyed by cyclic inflammatory episodes, occurs most commonly during middle age. Collagen-induced polychondritis (CIP) develops in heterologous type II collagen (CII) immunized young (6–8 wk old) mice expressing HLA-DQ6α8β transgenes (tg) regardless of gender, and mirrors clinical RP. Observers counted 4,637 swans (white birds and cygnets) in the Rocky Mountain Population of trumpeter swans during January and February 2008, which essentially was unchanged (-1%) from the 4,701 counted during winter 2007. The numbers of white birds (3,818) increased 4%, but the number of cygnets (808) decreased 12% from counts last year. However, these changes are somewhat biased due to a number of birds in Idaho not being classified as either white birds or cygnets in both 2007 (122 birds) and 2008 (11 birds). In the tri-state area, the number of total swans decreased in Montana (-21%) and Wyoming …

AIMS: To determine whether the novel non-AT1, non-AT2 binding site for angiotensins recently discovered in rodent brains occurs in the human brain. MAIN METHODS: Radioligand binding assays of (125)I-sarcosine(1), isoleucine(8) angiotensin II binding were carried out in homogenates of the rostral pole of the temporal cortex of human brains containing 0.3 mM parachloromercuribenzoate (PCMB), 10 microM losartan to saturate AT1 receptors, 10 microM PD123319 to saturate AT2 receptors, with or without 10 microM angiotensin II to define specific binding. How Movement Properties Affect Prey Encounter Rates Of Ambush Versus Active Predators: A Comment On Scharf Et Al, Tal Avgar, Nir Horvitz, Luba Broitman, Ran Nathan

Using an individual‐based model, Scharf and coworkers showed that ambush predators may encounter prey more frequently than active predators. We show that this surprising result emerges because active predators were oblivious to prey during movement, an assumption that refutes the common conception about active foraging and lessens the key difference between these foraging modes. A revised model confirms that active predators always encounter prey more frequently, unequivocally supporting the authors’ conclusion that the advantage of active predators diminishes as prey moves faster or more directionally. We suggest that movement‐dependent perception quality can determine the relative efficiency of these two foraging …
