Syntheses And Characterizations Of Bis(1°-Amino)-Cyclodiphosph(V)Azanes, Bis(Diazasilaphosphetidines), And Some Of Their Metal Complexes., Graham Russel Lief

Cyclodiphosph(V)azane ligands of the general formula [R(H)NE=P(μ-N tBu)2P=EN(H)R] where R = tBu, Ph, or Cy, and E = O, S, Se, or N-p-tolyl were synthesized and structurally characterized. Reaction of PCl3 and H2NtBu produced [ClP(μ-NtBu)2PCl]. Treatment of [ClP(μ-N tBu)2PCl] with LiN(H)R produced [R(H)NP(μ-Nt Bu)2PN(H)R] which was then oxidized using elemental sulfur and selenium, para-tolyl azide, and cumene hydroperoxide, generating ligands of general formula [R(H)NE=P(μ-NtBu) 2P=EN(H)R]. Treatment of [R(H)NE=P(μ-NtBu)2P=EN(H)R] with metal alkyls or amides produced complexes of the type {LnM[RNE=P(μ-N tBu)2P=ENR]MLn} and {LnM[RNE=P(μN tBu)2P=EN(H)R]} where M = Al, Zn, Zr, or Ti, and L = alkyl, amido, or THF ligands. Background: The ProteomeLab™ PF 2D platform is a relatively new approach to global protein profiling. Herein, it was used for investigation of plasma proteome changes in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients before and during immunization with glatiramer acetate (GA) in a clinical trial.
Results: The experimental design included immunoaffinity depletion of 12 most abundant proteins from plasma samples with the ProteomeLab™ IgY-12 LC10 column kit as first dimension separation, also referred to as immuno-partitioning. Second and third dimension separations of the enriched proteome were performed on the PF 2D platform utilizing 2D isoelectric focusing and RP-HPLC with the resulting fractions …

Cervical Extracellular Matrix Changes Due To Parturition, Rhonda R. Schafer

Cervical ripening involves an active process of extracellular matrix remodeling to produce dramatic changes in the biomechanical properties of the cervix. Comparison of temporal changes in proteoglycan synthesis, glycosaminoglycan accumulation, and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity in rat cervices related to pregnancy will allow us to better understand the sequence of events that control cervical ripening. To maintain clinical relevance, we will compare the effects of clinically used cervical ripening agents on extracellular matrix synthesis and degradation using human cervical fibroblasts in vitro.

Three-Dimensional Microscopy By Laser Scanning And Multi-Wavelength Digital Holography, Alexander Khmaladze

This dissertation presents techniques of three-dimensional microscopy. First, an economical method of microscopic image formation that employs a raster-scanning laser beam focused on a sample, while non-imaging detector receives the scattered light is presented. The images produced by this method are analogous to the scanning electron microscopy with visible effects of shadowing and reflection. Compared to a conventional wide-field imaging system, the system allows for a greater flexibility, as the variety of optical detectors, such as PMT and position-sensitive quadrant photodiode can be used to acquire images. Nature has created biomolecular machines that function with remarkable efficiency and precision. In recent years, science has attained an unprecedented understanding of the mechanisms of biological “machines.” This has inspired utilization of Nature’s engineering for applications in computation, self-assembly, and mechanics. Because biomolecules are inherently on the nanoscale, nanotechnology has emerged as an appropriate means for controlling biology. This requires both understanding the inorganic properties of the nanoparticle as well as creating an interface that is compatible with the complex and highly disordered environments of real biological systems. Fibrillar M13 bacteriophages were used as basic building blocks to generate thin films with aligned nanogrooves, which, upon chemical grafting with RGD peptides, guide cell alignment and orient the cell outgrowth along defined directions.

This work is a chapter for a forthcoming book on The Essentials of International Criminal Law to be published by Aspen Publishers as part of its Essentials series. This chapter discusses the contested concept of terrorism under international law, with a focus on efforts to criminalize the phenomenon. In particular, it discusses the major obstacles to achieving an omnibus definition of the crime with a particular emphasis on the intersection of the prohibitions against terrorism and international humanitarian law. Bacteriocins are a large and functionally diverse family of toxins found in all major lineages of Bacteria. Colicins, those bacteriocins produced by Escherichia coli, serve as a model system for investigations of bacteriocin structure-function relationships, genetic organization, and their ecological role and evolutionary history. Colicin expression is often dependent on host regulatory pathways (such as the SOS system), is usually confined to times of stress, and results in death of the producing cells. This study investigates the role of the SOS system in mediating this unique form of toxin expression. A comparison of all the sequenced enteric bacteriocin promoters reveals …
