Dealing with a long-term illness, traumatic injury, or a life altering accident or event can be very stressful for the person in those circumstances. It can also be very stressful for the family members and, specifically, the direct caregivers. Comparisons of psychosocial factors have been researched in families of children with special needs and families of children without special needs. Families of children with special needs have been found to have greater financial stress, interruption of family structure and routine, disruption of leisure activities, decreased time for social interaction, and poorer physical and mental health. The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine faculty and administrator perceptions of and attitudes toward professional degree programs at liberal arts institutions. Three upper-Midwestern, private, liberal arts colleges of similar size and religious affiliation were selected for the study. Qualitative research methods were used in this study. Data were collected from a series of 15 interviews with select faculty and administrators. Analysis of the data resulted in three categories. The first category, image, included two themes: Interviewees could define and state the purpose of liberal arts colleges, although there were significant differences among the responses; and interviewees knew …

Real-world infrastructure offers many scenarios where protocols (and other details) are not released due to being considered too sensitive or for other reasons. This situation makes it hard to apply fuzzing techniques to test their security and reliability, since their full documentation is only available to their developers, and domain developer expertise does not necessarily intersect with fuzz-testing expertise (nor deployment responsibility). State-of-the-art fuzzing techniques, however, work best when protocol specifications are available. Still, operators whose networks include equipment communicating via proprietary protocols should be able to reap the benefits of fuzz-testing them. In particular, administrators should be able to …

We report engineering Thermoanaerobacterium saccharolyticum, a thermophilic anaerobic bacterium that ferments xylan and biomass-derived sugars, to produce ethanol at high yield. Knockout of genes involved in organic acid formation (acetate kinase, phosphate acetyltransferase, and L-lactate dehydrogenase) resulted in a strain able to produce ethanol as the only detectable organic product and substantial changes in electron flow relative to the wild type. Ethanol formation in the engineered strain (ALK2) utilizes pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase with electrons transferred from ferredoxin to NAD(P), a pathway different from that in previously described microbes with a homoethanol fermentation. Retinal dopaminergic amacrine neurons (DA neurons) play a central role in reconfiguring retinal function according to prevailing illumination conditions, yet the mechanisms by which light regulates their activity are poorly understood. We investigated the means by which sustained light responses are evoked in DA neurons. Sustained light responses were driven by cationic currents and persisted in vitro and in vivo in the presence of L-AP4, a blocker of retinal ON-bipolar cells. Several characteristics of these L-AP4-resistant light responses suggested that they were driven by melanopsin-expressing intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), including long latencies, marked poststimulus persistence, and a peak …

Horseradish peroxidase was encapsulated in calcium alginate for the purpose of phenol removal. Considering enzyme encapsulation efficiency, retention activity and enzyme leakage of the capsules, the best gelation condition was found to be 1 % w/v of sodium alginate solution and 5.5 % w/v of calcium chloride hexahydrate. Upon immobilization, pH profile of enzyme activity changes as it shows higher value at basic and acidic solution. Besides, for each phenol concentration there would be an enzyme concentration which going further than this value has no significant effect on phenol removal. MUC4 is a large, heavily glycosylated transmembrane mucin, that is implicated in the pathogenesis of various types of cancers. To date, no extensive study has been done to check the expression and functional significance of MUC4 in different types of gastric adenocarcinomas. Here, we report the expression profile of MUC4 in gastric adenocarcinomas and its function in poorly differentiated gastric non-signet ring cell carcinoma (non-SRCC) type cells. Immunohistochemical analysis using tissue microarray (TMA) showed a significant difference in MUC4 expression between normal adjacent (n = 45) and gastric adenocarcinoma (n = 83; P < 0.001). MUC4 expression was not associated with tumour type, stage or with the degree of differentiation. To gain further insight into the significance of MUC4 expression in gastric non-SRCC cells, MUC4 was ectopically expressed in AGS, a poorly differentiated gastric non-signet ring cell line. The MUC4 overexpressing cells (AGS-MUC4) showed a significant increase (P < 0.005) in cell motility and a decrease in cellular aggregation as compared with the vector-transfected cells. Furthermore, in vivo tumorigenicity analysis revealed that animals transplanted with the MUC4 overexpressing cells (AGS-MUC4) had a greater incidence of tumours (83%) in comparison to empty vector control (17%). In addition, the expression of MUC4 resulted in enhanced expression of total cellular ErbB2 and phosphorylated ErbB2. In conclusion, our results showed that MUC4 is overexpressed in gastric adenocarcinoma tissues, and that it has a role in promoting aggressive properties in poorly differentiated gastric non-SRCC cells through the activation of the ErbB2 oncoprotein.

In 2005, Park et al. demonstrated that the 2-fold surface of a d-AlNiCo quasicrystal exhibits an 8-fold frictional anisotropy, as measured by atomic-force microscopy, between the periodic and aperiodic directions [40, 41]. It has been well known that quasicrystals exhibit lower friction than their crystalline counterparts [38, 18, 51, 30, 12, 54]; however, the discovery of the frictional anisotropy allows for a unique opportunity to study the effect of periodicity on friction when chemical composition, oxidation, and wear are no longer variables.

To better understand the seasonal controls on nutrient abundances, speciation, and fluxes in a watershed underlain by discontinuous permafrost, we collected water samples biweekly from the Chena River during 2005-2006 to measure inorganic and organic N, P, and Si in dissolved and particulate phases. Nitrate concentrations were low (8-14 mu M) during the winter and summer dry seasons but were elevated during the spring freshet (15-24 mu M). Ammonium varied from 8 to 13 mu M during the winter but dropped dramatically during the ice-open season to 0.1-3 mM. Phosphate was very low throughout the year (ranging from 0.03 to …
