Seeking A Seat At The Table: Has Law Left Environmental Ethics Behind, As It Embraces Bioethics?,, Heidi Gorovitz Robertson

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Bioethics evolved from theoretical philosophy into an applied field. Decision makers in health and medical sciences involve bioethicists in decisions and policy making. Although people study environmental ethics, mainly in philosophy programs, environmental ethicists are not involved in decision making. I explore the development of bioethics and environmental ethics, primarily considering the role of law in their development. I ask whether laws and legal opinions encouraging the use of bioethicists in decision making promoted the development of applied bioethics, and correspondingly, whether the absence of laws and opinions promoting environmental ethicists retarded the development of applied environmental ethics. Finally, I …

Two Major Flaws Of The Animal Rights Movement, Geordie Duckler Jan 2008

Two Major Flaws Of The Animal Rights Movement, Geordie Duckler

Animal Law Review

In its current guise, animal rights advocacy imposes few intellectual demands on its proponents, usually requiring little more than a colorful Web site and a college dictionary, the former to construct an audience, and the latter to provide the emotion-laden phrases needed to inflame that audience into supporting stringent penalties for animal-related crimes. Hard thought is not really essential for animal rights advocates to be able to proclaim an end to animal abuse or an allegiance to easing animal suffering, and the standard advocate toolkit simply need not include “rational legal analysis” among the apparatus utilized to rail against mistreatment, …

Presynaptic Depression In Phasic Motor Nerve Terminals And Influence Of 5-Ht On Vesicle Dynamics, A. F. M. Johnstone, S. S. Kellie, Robin L. Cooper Jan 2008

Presynaptic Depression In Phasic Motor Nerve Terminals And Influence Of 5-Ht On Vesicle Dynamics, A. F. M. Johnstone, S. S. Kellie, Robin L. Cooper

Biology Faculty Publications

Synaptic depression that is induced by electrical stimulation of the glutamatergic neuromuscular junction (NMJ) of the crayfish can be offset by recruitment of vesicles from a presynaptic reserve pool. This recruitment occurs following treatment of the NMJ with serotonin (5-HT), which results in a delay in the onset of synaptic depression induced by high frequency stimulation. The results of this study demonstrate that the releasable vesicles are insufficiently replenished during high frequency stimulation and that the readily releasable pool of vesicles (RRP) can be enhanced by the reserve pool (RP) in the presence of 5-HT. Anatomical visualization of vesicular pools …

Serum S-100b As A Potential Biomarker For Meningitis In Febrile Infants: An Interim Analysis, Kelvin C. Lau

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study is to identify the utility of serum S-100B levels as a marker for meningitis in febrile infants younger than 3 months of age. All infants younger than 3 months of age who presented to the Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) of Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital and required both a lumbar puncture and venipuncture due to either a confirmed rectal temperature ≥38.0°C or an overall presentation that concerned the responsible physician for possible meningitis and required a lumbar puncture as part of their PED evaluation, were prospectively enrolled. A total of 111 patients participated after a 1.5-year …

Role Of Mkl1 In Megakaryocytopoiesis And In T(1;22)-Associated Acute Megakaryoblastic Leukemia, James Troy Jan 2008

Role Of Mkl1 In Megakaryocytopoiesis And In T(1;22)-Associated Acute Megakaryoblastic Leukemia, James Troy

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The t(1;22)(p13;q13) translocation creates a fusion of the genes RBM15 and MKL1 and is exclusively associated with the infantile form of Acute Megakaryoblastic Leukemia, or AML variant M7. Although MKL1 is a known coactivator of the Serum Response Factor (SRF) pathway, it is not known whether MKL1 plays an important role in megakaryocytic commitment or differentiation. This project investigated the role of MKL1 in normal megakaryocytopoiesis by using a human CD34+ hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) model. Human CD34+ HSCs were transduced with lentiviral vectors expressing either MKL1 or dominant negative MKL1 (DN-MKL1) and were cultured in conditions promoting megakaryocytopoiesis. After …

What Is The Effectiveness Of A Biopsychosocial Approach To Individual Physiotherapy Care For Chronic Low Back Pain?, Susan I. George Jan 2008

What Is The Effectiveness Of A Biopsychosocial Approach To Individual Physiotherapy Care For Chronic Low Back Pain?, Susan I. George

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

A systematic review of randomized controlled trials was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of a biopsychosocial approach to management for chronic low back pain when applied by individual physiotherapists. Eight primary databases and three secondary databases were searched electronically. A manual reference search was also performed. To be eligible, trials had to provide treatment according to biopsychosocial principles in primary care or comparable settings. This approach is a holistic intervention that addresses social, psychological, and biological aspects of chronic pain. Included trials defined chronic low back pain as of greater than eight weeks duration. Primary outcome measures were reductions in …

Application Of Artificial Neural Network Techniques For Design Of Modular Minicell Configurations, Arvind Goyal Jan 2008

Application Of Artificial Neural Network Techniques For Design Of Modular Minicell Configurations, Arvind Goyal

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Artificial neural networks, so far, have not been used for designing modular cells. Therefore, Self-organizing neural network (SONN) is used in the present research to design minicell-based manufacturing system. Two previously developed methods were studied and implemented using SONN model. Results obtained are compared with previous results to analyze the effectiveness of SONN in designing minicells. A new method is then developed with the objective to design minicells more effectively and efficiently. Results of all three methods are compared using machine-count and materialhandling as performance measuring criteria to find out the best method

Algebraic And Combinatorial Properties Of Certain Toric Ideals In Theory And Applications, Sonja Petrovic Jan 2008

Algebraic And Combinatorial Properties Of Certain Toric Ideals In Theory And Applications, Sonja Petrovic

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This work focuses on commutative algebra, its combinatorial and computational aspects, and its interactions with statistics. The main objects of interest are projective varieties in Pn, algebraic properties of their coordinate rings, and the combinatorial invariants, such as Hilbert series and Gröbner fans, of their defining ideals. Specifically, the ideals in this work are all toric ideals, and they come in three flavors: they are defining ideals of a family of classical varieties called rational normal scrolls, cut ideals that can be associated to a graph, and phylogenetic ideals arising in a new and increasingly popular area of …

In Vitro Antimicrobial Activity Of Salvadora Persica L. Extracts Against Some Isolated Oral Pathogens In Iraq, Firas A. Al-Bayati, Khudir D. Sulaiman

Turkish Journal of Biology

Aqueous and methanol extracts of Salvadora persica L., a plant used in Iraq for oral hygiene, was investigated for its antimicrobial activities against 7 isolated oral pathogens: Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus faecalis, Streptococcus pyogenis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans using disc diffusion and micro-well dilution assays. According to both antimicrobial assays the aqueous extract inhibited all isolated microorganisms, especially the Streptococcus species, and was more efficient than the methanol extract, which was resisted by Lacto. acidophilus and Ps. aeruginosa. The strongest antibacterial activity was observed using the aqueous extract against Strep. faecalis (zone of inhibition: 22.3 mm; …

The Systematic Position Of Lauroiinae Skrjabin And Schikhobalova, 1951 (Nemata: Heterakoidea: Aspidoderidae), As Revealed By The Analysis Of Traits Used In Its Diagnosis, F. Agustin Jimenez-Ruiz, Scott L. Gardner, Dely Noronha, Roberto Magalhaes Pinto

Publications

During our work on biodiversity of parasites of mammals of the Neotropics we collected numerous nematodes assignable to species of the family Aspidoderidae (Nemata: Heterakoidea). These nematodes occur as parasites of the cecum and large intestine of marsupials, rodents and xenarthrans (armadillos) only in the New World. As aspidoderid nematodes have been little studied beyond their alpha taxonomy, it is the purpose of the present paper to apply phylogenetic systematic methods to more completely understand the evolutionary relationships of the included species. Members of the aspidoderid subfamily Lauroiinae have had very little work applied to their systematic relationships and no …

Two New Harlequin Frogs (Anura: Atelopus) From The Andes Of Northern Peru, Pablo J. Venegas, Alessandro Catenazzi, Karen Siu Ting, Jorge Carrillo Jan 2008

Two New Harlequin Frogs (Anura: Atelopus) From The Andes Of Northern Peru, Pablo J. Venegas, Alessandro Catenazzi, Karen Siu Ting, Jorge Carrillo

Publications

Two new species of Atelopus (harlequin frogs) are described from the Andes of northern Peru, one from the northern Cordillera de Huancabamba (Departamento de Piura), 2,950 m elevation, and the other from an inter-Andean valley of the upper Marañon basin, Cordillera Central (Departamento de La Libertad), 2,620 m elevation. We also suggest the possible link between infection by the chytrid fungus and mortality of harlequin frogs in the upper Marañon basin in 999.
