Determination Of Photochemically Produced Carbon Dioxide In Seawater, Emily M. White, David J. Kieber, Kenneth Mopper
Determination Of Photochemically Produced Carbon Dioxide In Seawater, Emily M. White, David J. Kieber, Kenneth Mopper
Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications
An analytical system was developed to determine photochemically produced carbon dioxide in marine waters. Our system was designed to measure low levels of carbon dioxide by maintaining a closed system to prevent atmospheric contamination during sample preparation, irradiation, and analysis. To detect low levels of photoproduced carbon dioxide in seawater, background dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) was removed before irradiation. To strip out DIC, samples were acidified to pH 3.0 (converting DIC to carbon dioxide) and bubbled with low carbon dioxide air. The pH was then readjusted back to the original value, and the resulting low-DIC seawater samples were transferred pneumatically …

An enhanced buildup of [Ca2+]i occurs during short-term facilitation (STF) at the crayfish neuromuscular junction (NMJ). As a model system, this NMJ allows discrete postsynaptic quantal events to be counted and characterized in relation to STF. Providing 10 pulses, at 20 and 40Hz, we monitored postsynaptic quantal events over a discrete region of a nerve terminal with a focal macropatch electrode. Characteristics of quantal events were clustered into groups by peak amplitude and time to the peak amplitude. Since the synapses at this NMJ have varied spacing of active zones, number of active zones and synaptic size, the …

Phage integrase genes often play a role in the establishment of lysogeny in temperate phage by catalyzing the integration of the phage into one of the host's replicons. To investigate temperate phage gene expression, an induced viral metagenome from Tampa Bay was sequenced by 454/Pyrosequencing. The sequencing yielded 294,068 reads with 6.6% identifiable. One hundred-three sequences had significant similarity to integrases by BLASTX analysis (e≤0.001). Four sequences with strongest amino-acid level similarity to integrases were selected and real-time PCR primers and probes were designed. Initial testing with microbial fraction DNA from Tampa Bay revealed 1.9×107, and 1300 gene …

Morphology And Filling Of Incised Submarine Valleys On The Continental Shelf Near The Mouth Of The Fly River, Gulf Of Papua, J. S. Crockett, C. A. Nittrouer, A. S. Ogston, D. F. Naar, B. T. Donahue
Marine Science Faculty Publications
Much historical perspective about terrestrial and marine processes can be obtained from examination of fluvial valleys formed during lower sea level on surfaces that are now continental shelves. The continental shelf near the mouth of the Fly River (Gulf of Papua) has three incised valleys, which were not extensively modified or filled during the Holocene Transgression. Multibeam mapping of the valleys documents their morphology; seismic profiling reveals stratigraphy of sediment fill; and coring within and near the valleys suggests mechanisms of filling. Kiwai Valley is deep (20–50 m relief), narrow (∼1 km wide), steep-sided and meandering, due to river flows …

A grid derived from a new compilation of marine echo-sounding data sets has allowed us to visualize and map the geomorphology of the entire continental shelf around South Georgia at an unprecedented level of detail. The grid is the first continuous bathymetric data set covering South Georgia to include multibeam swath bathymetry and represent them at a subkilometer resolution. Large and previously undescribed glacially eroded troughs, linked to South Georgia's modern-day fjords, radiate from the island, marking the former pathways of large outlet glaciers and ice streams. A tectonic or geological influence is apparent for the major troughs, where glaciers …

Solid Phase Extraction Of Cadmium In Edible Oils Using Zinc Piperazinedithiocarbamate And Its Determination By Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry, Mehtap Yağan Aşci, Ayşegül Efendi̇oğlu, Beki̇r Bati
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A method was developed for preconcentration of cadmium with zinc-piperazinedithiocarbamate (ZnPDC) in edible oils and its determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometer (FAAS). The preconcentration method is based on the adsorption of the Cd(II) on to ZnPDC and the elution of them with mercury(II) nitrate. The accuracy of the method was tested with standard reference material (CONOSTAN S-21) and Cd added samples. Under optimum conditions, the recovery and the detection limit for cadmium were 99.67% (\pm 0.67) and 0.028 mg/L, respectively. The calibration curve was linear over the concentration range 0.1-3.0 mg/L (r^2 = 0.9979). The proposed method was applied …

Some 3(2H)-pyridazinone and 1(2H)-phthalazinone derivatives were synthesized. The structures of these new compounds were confirmed by IR, ^1H-NMR, mass spectrum, and elemental analysis. The synthesized compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial activity against various gram-positive and gram-negative strains of bacteria and their clinical isolates and for their antimycobacterial activity against M. tuberculosis H37Rv. The results showed that the synthesized compounds were generally active against B. subtilis and its clinical isolate. Among the target compounds, compound 14c exhibited the best antibacterial activity, with a MIC value of 15.62 \mu g/mL against B. subtilis. Compound 15e had the highest antimycobacterial activity.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
2-Nitro-N-(4-nitrophenyl)benzamide was synthesized and characterized by spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The crystal structure was determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group, P 2_12_12_1, with unit cell dimensions a = 8.9443(10) Å, b = 9.7147(11) Å, and c = 13.8016(16) Å. The dihedral angle between the 2 aromatic rings is 82.32(4)^{\circ}. The N2 and N3 nitro groups are oriented with respect to their attached phenyl rings at dihedral angles of 1.97(3)^{\circ} and 15.73(3)^{\circ}, respectively. The intramolecular C-H{\ldots}O hydrogen bond results in the formation of a non-planar 6-membered ring. In the crystal structure, intermolecular N-H...O hydrogen …

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship
Abstract
Background
In utero interactions between incompatible maternal and fetal genotypes are a potential mechanism for the onset or progression of pregnancy related diseases such as pre-eclampsia (PE). However, the optimal analytical approach and study design for evaluating incompatible maternal/offspring genotype combinations is unclear.
Methods
Using simulation, we estimated the type I error and power of incompatible maternal/offspring genotype models for two analytical approaches: logistic regression used with case-control mother/offspring pairs and the log-linear regression used with case-parent triads. We evaluated a real dataset consisting of maternal/offspring pairs with and without PE for incompatibility effects using the optimal analysis based …

Non-Beneficial Pediatric Research And The Best Interest Standard: A Reconciliation, Paul J. Litton
Faculty Publications
Federal efforts beginning in the 1990's have successfully increased pediatric research to improve medical care for all children. Since 1997, the FDA has requested 800 pediatric studies involving 45,000 children. Much of this research is "non-beneficial"; that is, it exposes pediatric subjects to risk even though these children will not benefit from participating in the research. Non-beneficial pediatric research (NBPR) seems, by definition, contrary to the best interests of pediatric subjects, which is why one state supreme court has essentially prohibited it. It also appears that the only plausible rationale for this research is utilitarian, as it risks some children …

Cardiac fibroblasts produce and degrade extracellular matrix and are critical in regulating cardiac remodeling and hypertrophy. Fibroblasts are activated by factors such as transforming growth factor β and inhibited by agents that elevate 3′,5′-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels. cAMP signal generation and response is known to be compartmentalized in many cell types in part through the colocalization of receptors and specific adenylyl cyclase isoforms in lipid rafts and caveolae. The present study sought to define the localization of key G protein-coupled receptors with adenylyl cyclase type 6 (AC6) in lipid rafts of rat cardiac fibroblasts and to determine if this …

Phenothiazine and derivatives were tested for inhibition of SARS-CoV replication. Phenothiazine slightly inhibited SARS-CoV replication in a neutral red (NR) uptake assay. Adding a propylamino group to give promazine reduced virus yields (VYR assay) with an EC90 = 8.3 ± 2.8 μM, but without selectivity. Various substitutions in the basic phenothiazine structure did not promote efficacy. Phenazine ethosulfate was the most potent compound by VYR assay (EC90 = 6.1 ± 4.3 μM). All compounds were toxic (IC50 = 6.6–74.5 μM) except for phenoxathiin (IC50 = 858 ± 208 μM) and 10-(alpha-diethylamino-propionyl) phenothiazine·HCl (IC50 = 195 ± 71.2 μM). Consequently, none …

A Truly Good Work: Turning To Restorative Justice For Answers To The Welfare-To-Work Dilemma, Marie Failinger

U.S. welfare programs have traditionally come with strings attached: recipients must work for their benefits. I argue that there is a more practical and less morally repugnant way to marry work and welfare if proponents of work as well as their opponents would be willing to give up the unrealistic expectations they have placed on state-run public assistance programs, and define a clear and limited relationship between work and need for economically vulnerable people. Just as it has offered an alternative to both the pure retributivist and rehabilitation models in the area of criminal corrections, the principles and practices of …

Spatial Structure And Inbreeding Depression In Slickspot Peppergrass, Lepidium Papilliferum (Brassicaceae), Stephanie A. Billinge, Ian C. Robertson
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
In plants with limited pollen and seed dispersal, populations are often spatially structured such that neighboring individuals are more closely related to one another than to distant individuals. Mating among close relatives, including selfing, may lead to a reduction in reproductive performance through the effects of prezygotic mating barriers and inbreeding depression. Studying 11 populations of slickspot peppergrass, Lepidium papilliferum (L.F. Hend.) A. Nels. and J.F. Macbr (Brassicaceae), a rare mustard endemic to southwestern Idaho, we investigated whether small populations (16–746 flowering individuals) exhibit spatial structure as previously reported for large populations (>3000 flowering individuals). Through hand-pollination experiments we …

Bereaved Parents' Negotiation Of Identity Following The Death Of A Child, Paige W. Toller
Communication Faculty Publications
This study examines changes in bereaved parents’ identities following the death of a child. The bereaved parents in this study experienced two dialectical contradictions of identity, which are: (a) a parent without a child to parent and (b) I’m an outsider- I’m an insider. Results describe how parents used communication to negotiate these contradictions of identity. Implications for the study of parental bereavement, communication, and identity are discussed.

Teaching puberty to 10-11 year olds and teaching sexuality to 13-18 year olds should be fun. Yet fun is not ordinarily associated with teaching puberty and sex in polite secular American society, let within religious arenas. It may not be polite and there are parental fears that formal sex education has a causal relationship with promiscuity. Yet, when I have asked over the years in my Sexualities class, in my most informal of polls, whether parents have taken a large and/or productive role in teaching sex to their children, the percentages are always very small. Many parents do not know …

Despite progress in interdisciplinary research, difficulties remain. In this paper, we argue that scholars, educators, and practitioners need to critically rethink the ways in which interdisciplinary research and training are conducted. We present epistemological pluralism as an approach for conducting innovative, collaborative research and study. Epistemological pluralism recognizes that, in any given research context, there may be several valuable ways of knowing, and that accommodating this plurality can lead to more successful integrated study. This approach is particularly useful in the study and management of social–ecological systems. Through resilience theory's adaptive cycle, we demonstrate how a focus on epistemological pluralism …

Voltage-gated Na⁺ channels (Nav1.2) which are proteins that posses 4 (I-IV) domains and six transmembrane (S1-S6) helices in each domain display abnormally slowed fast inactivation when an α-scorpion toxin binds to it. However, voltage gated Na⁺ channels of the Mesobuthus martensii Karsch (MmK) scorpion that produces α-scorpion toxins are resistant to their toxins. The previously described α-toxin binding site 3 of the MmK voltage-gated Na⁺ channels were examined by a comparative method using an alignment of many sodium channel protein sequences (multi-alignment) generated using the rat Nav1.2 α-toxin sequence of binding site 3 as a template for the alignment. In Quanta Computer, Inc. v. LG Electronics, Inc., the Supreme Court recalibrated the balance between the rights of a patentee to contractually control the post-sale transfer and the use of patented goods. Specifically, the Court extended the doctrine of patent exhaustion to cover the exhaustion of patents not recited in the license, as well as the practice of technology that does not infringe any patent, but which can only be used in a manner by customers that would infringe a patent. While Quanta arose out of facts concerning computer technology, the implications of this decision will be widespread, permeating diverse …

On May 8, 2008, Judge Bryson posed that hypothetical as a way of stressing a point during the oral argument of In re Bilski, one of the most highly-attended hearings in the twenty-five year history of the Federal Circuit. In the Bilski case, the Federal Circuit will decide whether to embrace a new patentability test that redefines what is patent-eligible subject matter in the United States, or to create a fourth no-no to patent eligibility. At stake are many computer software patents and business method patents that form the …
