Is Preventative, Concurrent Management Of The Soybean Aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae) And Bean Leaf Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Possible?, Kevin D. Johnson, Matthew E. O'Neal, Jeffrey Bradshaw, Marlin E. Rice Jan 2008

Is Preventative, Concurrent Management Of The Soybean Aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae) And Bean Leaf Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) Possible?, Kevin D. Johnson, Matthew E. O'Neal, Jeffrey Bradshaw, Marlin E. Rice

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

In Iowa, the management of insect pests in soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., has been complicated by the arrival of the invasive species soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), and occasional outbreaks of bean leaf beetle, Cerotoma trifurcata (Förster) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), populations leading to economic losses. Several insecticide programs designed to reduce abundance of the overwintered and first generation C. trifurcata and the incidence of bean pod mottle virus were evaluated over 3 yr (2004-2006) for their impacts on A. glycines populations, at three locations in Iowa (Floyd, Lucas, and Story counties). There was no significant overlap of either …

Crop Residue In North Dakota: Measured And Simulated By The Wind Erosion Prediction System, Simon Van Donk, S. D. Merrill, D. L. Tanaka, J. M. Krupinsky Jan 2008

Crop Residue In North Dakota: Measured And Simulated By The Wind Erosion Prediction System, Simon Van Donk, S. D. Merrill, D. L. Tanaka, J. M. Krupinsky

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Residue cover is very important for controlling soil erosion by water and wind. Thus, the Wind Erosion Prediction System (WEPS) includes a model for the decomposition of crop residue. It simulates the fall rate of standing residue and the decomposition of standing and flat residue as a function of temperature and moisture. It also calculates residue cover from flat residue mass. Most of the data used to develop and parameterize this model have been collected in the southern U.S. We compared WEPS‐simulated residue cover with that measured in south‐central North Dakota for 50 two‐year cropping sequences from nine crops species …

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

The Central High Plains of the United States (western Nebraska and Kansas and eastern Wyoming and Colorado) is a major beef cattle production area, but it is subject to periodic droughts. Annual forages are an essential feed source for maintaining beef cattle herds during periods of drought and winter months. The objective of this study was to determine nutrient concentrations in annual forages, including barley, oats, triticale, forage sorghums, sudangrass, pearl millet, foxtail millet, field peas, soybeans, and vetch grown for hay in this region. The summer annuals—forage sorghums, sudangrass, pearl millet, and foxtail millet—were grown in replicated rain-fed and …

Great northern common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) germplasm line ABC-Weihing (Reg. No. GP-246, PI 647964) was developed by the University of Nebraska Agricultural Research Division in cooperation with USDA-ARS and released in 2006. This line, tested as NE1-05-4, was bred specifically for enhanced resistance to common bacterial blight (CBB), a major seed borne disease of common bean caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris pv. phaseoli (Smith) Dye (Xcp). ABC-Weihing is a great northern BC5F3:6 line obtained from five backcrosses (‘Weihing’*5//‘Chase’/XAN 159). The first cross was made in spring 1997. Only BCnF1 plants …

Conformational Changes And Flexibility In T-Cell Receptor Recognition Of Peptide–Mhc Complexes, Kathryn M. Armstrong, Kurt H. Piepenbrink, Brian M. Baker Jan 2008

Conformational Changes And Flexibility In T-Cell Receptor Recognition Of Peptide–Mhc Complexes, Kathryn M. Armstrong, Kurt H. Piepenbrink, Brian M. Baker

Food for Health: Publications

A necessary feature of the immune system, TCR (T-cell receptor) cross-reactivity has been implicated in numerous autoimmune pathologies and is an underlying cause of transplant rejection. Early studies of the interactions of αβ TCRs (T-cell receptors) with their peptide–MHC ligands suggested that conformational plasticity in the TCR CDR (complementarity determining region) loops is a dominant contributor to T-cell cross-reactivity. Since these initial studies, the database of TCRs whose structures have been solved both bound and free is now large enough to permit general conclusions to be drawn about the extent of TCR plasticity and the types and locations of motion …

Genomic Counter-Stress Changes Induced By The Relaxation Response, Jeffery A. Dusek, Hasan H. Otu, Ann L. Wohlhueter, Manoj Bhasin, Luiz F. Zerbini, Marie G. Joseph, Herbert Benson, Towia A. Libermann Jan 2008

Genomic Counter-Stress Changes Induced By The Relaxation Response, Jeffery A. Dusek, Hasan H. Otu, Ann L. Wohlhueter, Manoj Bhasin, Luiz F. Zerbini, Marie G. Joseph, Herbert Benson, Towia A. Libermann

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Background: Mind-body practices that elicit the relaxation response (RR) have been used worldwide for millennia to prevent and treat disease. The RR is characterized by decreased oxygen consumption, increased exhaled nitric oxide, and reduced psychological distress. It is believed to be the counterpart of the stress response that exhibits a distinct pattern of physiology and transcriptional profile. We hypothesized that RR elicitation results in characteristic gene expression changes that can be used to measure physiological responses elicited by the RR in an unbiased fashion.

Methods/Principal Findings: We assessed whole blood transcriptional profiles in 19 healthy, long-term practitioners of daily RR …

Objective—Our previous study suggested that growth arrest and DNA damage–inducible protein 45β (GADD45β) prolonged the survival of hypertrophic chondrocytes in the developing mouse embryo. This study was undertaken, therefore, to investigate whether GADD45β plays a role in adult articular cartilage.

Methods—Gene expression profiles of cartilage from patients with late-stage osteoarthritis (OA) were compared with those from patients with early OA and normal controls in 2 separate microarray analyses. Histologic features of cartilage were graded using the Mankin scale, and GADD45β was localized by immunohistochemistry. Human chondrocytes were transduced with small interfering RNA (siRNA)–GADD45 …

Successful Use Of Alarm And Alert Calls To Reduce Emerging Crop Damage By Resident Canada Geese Near Horicon Marsh, Wisconsin, Philip Whitford Jan 2008

Successful Use Of Alarm And Alert Calls To Reduce Emerging Crop Damage By Resident Canada Geese Near Horicon Marsh, Wisconsin, Philip Whitford

Bird Strike Committee-USA/Canada Joint Annual Meeting: 11th (2009)

Increased populations of resident Canada geese create major crop loss problems for farmers, especially in areas that become traditional sites for brood-rearing. Such sites concentrate geese and goslings in locations where food is abundant and flightless adults and young find escape safety on adjacent lakes or rivers. Emerging corn, winter wheat, and soybeans are favorite foods, and these sustain extensive crop damage when near water and brood-rearing sites. From 16 May to 28 August 2007, alarm and alert call playbacks from GooseBuster call units were used with and without other scare reinforcement to assess efficacy of different methods at reducing …

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

Recombinant Factor IX characterized by a high percentage of active protein can be obtained in the milk of transgenic animals that incorporate chimeric DNA molecules according to the present invention. Transgenic animals of the present invention are produced by introducing into developing embryos DNA that encodes Factor IX, such that the foreign DNA is stably incorporated in the DNA of germ line cells of the mature animal. Particularly efficient expression was accomplished using a chimeric construct comprising a mammary gland specific promoter, Factor IX cDNA that lacked the complete or any portion of the 5'-untranslated and 3'-un-translated region, which is …

Thermodynamically Coupled Transport In Simple Catalytic Reactions, Yaşar Demirel Jan 2008

Thermodynamically Coupled Transport In Simple Catalytic Reactions, Yaşar Demirel

Yaşar Demirel Publications

Considerable work published on chemical reaction-diffusion systems investigates mainly mathematically coupled nonlinear differential equations. This study presents the modeling of a simple elementary chemical reaction with thermodynamically and mathematically coupled heat and mass transport with external mass and heat transfer resistances. The thermodynamic coupling refers that a flow occurs without or against its primary thermodynamic driving force, which may be a gradient of temperature or chemical potential. The modeling is based on the linear nonequilibrium thermodynamics approach and phenomenological equations by assuming that the system is in the vicinity of global equilibrium. This approach does not need detailed coupling mechanisms. …

Artificial Immune System Based Image Pattern Recognition In Energy Efficient Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks, Honggang Wang, Dongming Peng, Wei Wang, Hamid Sharif, J. Wegiel, D. Nguyen, R. Bowne, C. Backhaus

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

In Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs), low cost Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) camera sensors may only produce low resolution images due to hardware limitations. However, super-resolution images may be constructed from these low resolution images in a multiple sensor network, improving object pattern recognition success rates. There is a critical image recognition challenge in these reconstructed superresolution images for accuracy, complexity and limited energy resource in wireless sensor networks. Artificial Immune Systems (AIS), in particular those possessing algorithmic efficiency for image pattern differentiation, categorization and recognition, have potential advantages in low-cost automated monitoring and object detection applications. In this …

Grammar-Based Distance In Progressive Multiple Sequence Alignment, David Russell, Hasan H. Otu, Khalid Sayood

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Background: We propose a multiple sequence alignment (MSA) algorithm and compare the alignment-quality and execution-time of the proposed algorithm with that of existing algorithms. The proposed progressive alignment algorithm uses a grammar-based distance metric to determine the order in which biological sequences are to be pairwise aligned. The progressive alignment occurs via pairwise aligning new sequences with an ensemble of the sequences previously aligned.
Results: The performance of the proposed algorithm is validated via comparison to popular progressive multiple alignment approaches, ClustalW and T-Coffee, and to the more recently developed algorithms MAFFT, MUSCLE, Kalign, and PSAlign using the BAliBASE 3.0 …

Techniques For Computing Fitness Of Use (Fou) For Time Series Datasets With Applications In The Geospatial Domain, Lei Fu, Leen-Kiat Soh, Ashok Samal Jan 2008

Techniques For Computing Fitness Of Use (Fou) For Time Series Datasets With Applications In The Geospatial Domain, Lei Fu, Leen-Kiat Soh, Ashok Samal

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Time series data are widely used in many applications including critical decision support systems. The goodness of the dataset, called the Fitness of Use (FoU), used in the analysis has direct bearing on the quality of the information and knowledge generated and hence on the quality of the decisions based on them. Unlike traditional quality of data which is independent of the application in which it is used, FoU is a function of the application. As the use of geospatial time series datasets increase in many critical applications, it is important to develop formal methodologies to compute their FoU and …

Effects Of Wind Field Inhomogeneities On Doppler Beam Swinging Revealed By An Imaging Radar, B.L. Cheong, T.-Y. Yu, Robert D. Palmer, K.-F. Yang, Michael Hoffman, S.J. Frasier, F.J. Lopez-Dekker

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this work, the accuracy of the Doppler beam-swinging (DBS) technique for wind measurements is studied using an imaging radar—the turbulent eddy profiler (TEP) developed by the University of Mas- sachusetts, with data collected in summer 2003. With up to 64 independent receivers, and using coherent radar imaging (CRI), several hundred partially independent beams can be formed simultaneously within the volume defined by the transmit beam. By selecting a subset of these beams, an unprecedented number of DBS configurations with varying zenith angle, azimuth angle, and number of beams can be investigated. The angular distributions of echo power and radial …

Moving Beyond The Enduring Dominance Of Positivism In Psychological Research: An Australian Perspective, Lauren Breen, Dawn Darlaston-Jones Jan 2008

Moving Beyond The Enduring Dominance Of Positivism In Psychological Research: An Australian Perspective, Lauren Breen, Dawn Darlaston-Jones

Arts Conference Papers

Almost since its inception, the dominant narrative of modern psychology has embraced positivism through its insistence that psychological science is objective, generalisable, and value free (or neutral). Consequently, quantitative research and in particular, experimental designs, are privileged over other forms of enquiry and other epistemologies, methodologies, and methods remain marginalised within the discipline. Alternative epistemologies and methodologies remain predominantly at the margins within psychological research yet have resulted from the growing dissatisfaction with the dominance of positivism. We argue that the enduring hegemony of positivism needs to be opposed to enable psychology to genuinely understand the antecedents of, and provides …

Transportation Security Framework For A Medium-Sized City, Ryan Fries, Mashrur Chowdhury, Anne Dunning Jan 2008

Transportation Security Framework For A Medium-Sized City, Ryan Fries, Mashrur Chowdhury, Anne Dunning

Publications

Terrorist attacks have made security preparedness unquestionably necessary in all cities. While major metropolitan areas have long recognized that their global visibility has required strong security operations, many medium-sized cities, specifically those of the U.S. and European Union, now face the need to establish transportation security frameworks for the first time. This paper assesses the resources available to help medium-sized cities begin the task of creating such systems. This assessment presents infrastructure risk assessment tools, identifies infrastructure and funding resources, and creates a process for developing a security framework to connect agencies responsible for transportation security in these metropolitan areas. …
