Gloria Steinem, "Testimony Before Senate Hearings On The Equal Rights Amendment" (6 May 1970), Jill M. Weber

Communication Studies Faculty Scholarship

In her testimony before the Senate ERA hearings, Gloria Steinem refuted sex‐based myths about women and championed the ERA. Situating the ERA within the larger civil rights movement, Steinem called on Congress to acknowledge women's oppression as a serious political issue. She also worked to make women's rights issues more appealing to a mainstream audience by talking about the ERA's benefits for men and women and by emphasizing the democratic principles it embodied.

Developing A Multifaceted Approach To Identify A Core Undergraduate Browsing Collection, Doug Way, Sarah Beaubien, Julie A. Garrison Jan 2008

Developing A Multifaceted Approach To Identify A Core Undergraduate Browsing Collection, Doug Way, Sarah Beaubien, Julie A. Garrison

Presentations

In planning for a new library that will include a limited number of open stacks, Grand Valley State University librarians were asked to identify what materials should be reserved for the browsable shelves. To accomplish this, librarians considered user behavior by discipline, material types, shelving options and the role of core collections. This paper will discuss these issues as well as differences in how library resources are located and the impact of new discovery tools, such as Innovative Interface's Encore, Bowker’s Syndetics, and Google’s Book Search on redefining browsability. The paper will also include a discussion of resources used in …

Anaerobic Treatment Of Army Ammunition Production Wastewater Containing Perchlorate And Rdx, Emina Atikovic, Makram T. Suidan, Stephen W. Maloney

United States Army: Publications

Perchlorate is an oxidizer that has been routinely used in solid rocket motors by the Department of Defense and National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Royal Demolition Explosive (RDX) is a major component of military high explosives and is used in a wide variety of munitions. Perchlorate bearing wastewater typically results from production of solid rocket motors, while RDX is transferred to Army industrial wastewaters during load, assemble and pack operations for new munitions, and hot water or steam washout for disposal and deactivation of old munitions (commonly referred to as demilitarization, or simply demil).

The History Of The Unl Water Center From 1964, Water Center, School Of Natural Resources

Nebraska Water Center: Administrative Materials

Water is an integral part of Nebraska’s economy and well being in a state that depends on an adequate supply for all uses, including agricultural, municipal, industrial, recreational and wildlife habitat.

Nebraska is fortunate with regard to its water supply, having tremendous groundwater reserves which are estimated to be in excess of two billion acrefeet (an acre-foot being enough water to cover one acre of land with a foot of water, or approximately 325,000 gallons), combined with an estimated annual precipitation of 86 million acre-feet and annual average surface water inflows of 1.7 million acre-feet, give the state adequate supplies …

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

A Papua New Guinea field collection of the marine cyanobacterium Blennothrix cantharidosmum was investigated for its cytotoxic constituents. Bioassay-guided isolation defined the cytotoxic components as the known compounds lyngbyastatins 1 and 3. However, six new acyl proline derivatives, tumonoic acids D−I, plus the known tumonoic acid A were also isolated. Their planar structures were defined from NMR and MS data, while their stereostructures followed from a series of chiral chromatographies, degradation sequences, and synthetic approaches. The new compounds were tested in an array of assays, but showed only modest antimalarial and inhibition of quorum sensing activities. Nevertheless, these are the …

Computational Modeling Of Oxidative Stress: An Analysis Of Nad(P)H Effects On Nitric Oxide And Superoxide During Hypertension, Aaron Strobel Jan 2008

Computational Modeling Of Oxidative Stress: An Analysis Of Nad(P)H Effects On Nitric Oxide And Superoxide During Hypertension, Aaron Strobel

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Nitric oxide (NO) is inactivated in the human body when exposed to superoxide (02-). This reaction forms peroxynitrite (ONOO). Superoxide is produced in the cardiac system by several mechanisms, including NAD(P)H oxidase. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) breaks down superoxide into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. This prevents superoxide from reacting with nitric oxide and allows normal function to take place. Superoxide and peroxynitrite are main contributors to vascular disease in the human body, in particular hypertension.

Effects Of Gamma-Sterilization On The Physico-Chemical Properties Of Natural Sediments, T.L. Bank, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, A.S. Madden, M.A. Ginder-Vogel, M.E. Baldwin, P.M. Jardine

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Batch U(VI) sorption/reduction experiments were completed on sterilized and non-sterilized sediment samples to elucidate biological and geochemical reduction mechanisms. Results from X-ray absorption nearedge structure (XANES) spectroscopy revealed that γ-sterilized sediments were actually better sorbents of U(VI), despite the absence of any measurable biological activity. These results indicate that γ-irradiation induced significant physico-chemical changes in the sediment which is contrary to numerous other studies identifying γ-sterilization as an effective and minimally invasive technique. To identify the extent and method of alteration of the soil as a result of γ-sterilization, untreated soil samples, physically separated size fractions, …

Population Abundance And Growth Rate Of Western Gray Whales Eschrichtius Robustus, Amanda L. Bradford, David W. Weller, Paul R. Wade, Alexander M. Burdin, Robert L. Brownell Jr. Jan 2008

Population Abundance And Growth Rate Of Western Gray Whales Eschrichtius Robustus, Amanda L. Bradford, David W. Weller, Paul R. Wade, Alexander M. Burdin, Robert L. Brownell Jr.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

The western population of gray whales Eschrichtius robustus is one of the most endangered whale populations in the world. Recent studies of this population off the northeastern coast of Sakhalin Island, Russia, have produced a photographic dataset that was utilized for the first mark-recapture assessment of western gray whale abundance. Given encounter histories of 129 individually identified whales spanning 25 monthly capture occasions from 1997 to 2003, a closed capture estimator was employed to estimate the number of individuals using the study area in each year. Temporary emigration probabilities were then applied to the closed capture estimates to enumerate the …

Identifying And Explaining Map Quality Through Provenance: A User Study, Nicholas Ricky Del Rio, Paulo Pinheiro Da Silva Jan 2008

Identifying And Explaining Map Quality Through Provenance: A User Study, Nicholas Ricky Del Rio, Paulo Pinheiro Da Silva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Applications deployed on cyber-infrastructures often rely on multiple data sources and distributed compute resources to access, process, and derive results. When application results are maps, it is possible that non-intentional imperfections can get introduced into the map generation processes because of several reasons including the use of low quality datasets, use of data filtering techniques incompatible for the kind of map to be generated, or even the use of inappropriate mapping parameters, e.g., low-resolution gridding parameters. Without some means for accessing and visualizing the provenance associated with map generation processes, i.e., metadata about information sources and methods used to derive …

Flower Power: Tree Flowering Phenology As A Settlement Cue For Migrating Birds, Laura J. Mcgrath, Charles Van Riper Iii, Joseph J. Fontaine Jan 2008

Flower Power: Tree Flowering Phenology As A Settlement Cue For Migrating Birds, Laura J. Mcgrath, Charles Van Riper Iii, Joseph J. Fontaine

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

1.Neotropical migrant birds show a clear preference for stopover habitats with ample food supplies; yet, the proximate cues underlying these decisions remain unclear. 2.For insectivorous migrants, cues associated with vegetative phenology (e.g. flowering, leaf flush, and leaf loss) may reliably predict the availability of herbivorous arthropods. Here we examined whether migrants use the phenology of five tree species to choose stopover locations, and whether phenology accurately predicts food availability. 3.Using a combination of experimental and observational evidence, we show migrant populations closely track tree phenology, particularly the flowering phenology of honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa), and preferentially forage in …

Lure-Size Restrictions In Recreational Fisheries, Gene R. Wilde, Kevin L. Pope, Bart W. Durham Jan 2008

Lure-Size Restrictions In Recreational Fisheries, Gene R. Wilde, Kevin L. Pope, Bart W. Durham

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

We conducted angling experiments to examine the potential use of lure-size restrictions to effect or reinforce length limits. We used four sizes of lures and five color patterns to assess effects of lure size and color on the number and length of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) captured by angling. There was a significant (F = 12.03; df = 1, 177; P = 0.0007) lure-size effect on the total length (TL) of captured largemouth bass. Catch rates of fish ≥305-mm TL ranged from 0 to 0.5 fish per hour and were unrelated to lure size. Lure color pattern had …

Design And Field Methods For Sighting Surveys Of Cetaceans In Coastal And Riverine Habitats, Steve Dawson, Paul Wade, Elisabeth Slooten, Jay Barlow Jan 2008

Design And Field Methods For Sighting Surveys Of Cetaceans In Coastal And Riverine Habitats, Steve Dawson, Paul Wade, Elisabeth Slooten, Jay Barlow

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

1. Dolphins and porpoises in coastal and/or riverine habitats face serious conservation threats, yet surveys of their abundance are often especially difficult due to the challenges imposed by the habitats. Because many of these species occur in developing countries, lack of resources imposes a further set of challenges.

2. We offer advice on designing and conducting line-transect surveys with a focus on sound, practical, design rather than analytical sophistication, and we attempt, where possible, to offer simple, inexpensive solutions.

3. We guide the reader through the questions of what kind of survey should be done, whether by boat or aircraft, …

Areawide Pest Management Of Cereal Aphids In Dryland Wheat Systems Of The Great Plains, Usa, Kristopher Giles, Gary L. Hein, Frank Peairs

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

In the Great Plains of the USA from Wyoming to Texas, dryland winter wheat either is regularly grown continuously or is followed by a year of fallow in semi-arid locales (Royer and Krenzer, 2000). It has been well documented that these continuous monocultures can, over time, lead to increased levels of all types of pests (i.e. insects, diseases and weeds) (Andow, 1983, 1991; Vandermeer, 1989; Cook and Veseth, 1990; Elliott et al., 1998a; Way, 1998; Ahern and Brewer, 2002; Boyles et al., 2004; Brewer and Elliott, 2004; Men et al., 2004). Relative to insect pests, the ephemeral …

Loss Of Housekeeping Selenoprotein Expression In Mouse Liver Modulates Lipoprotein Metabolism, Aniruddha Sengupta, Bradley A. Carlson, Victoria J. Hoffmann, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield Jan 2008

Loss Of Housekeeping Selenoprotein Expression In Mouse Liver Modulates Lipoprotein Metabolism, Aniruddha Sengupta, Bradley A. Carlson, Victoria J. Hoffmann, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Selenium is incorporated into proteins as selenocysteine (Sec), which is dependent on its specific tRNA, designated tRNA [Ser]Sec. Targeted removal of the tRNA [Ser]Sec gene (Trsp) in mouse hepatocytes previously demonstrated the importance of selenoproteins in liver function. Herein, analysis of plasma proteins in this Trsp knockout mouse revealed increases in apolipoprotein E (ApoE) that was accompanied by elevated plasma cholesterol levels. The expression of genes involved in cholesterol biosynthesis, metabolism and transport were also altered in knockout mice. Additionally, in two transgenic Trsp mutant mouse lines (wherein only housekeeping selenoprotein synthesis was restored), the expression …
