Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Salmonella enterica serovar Paratyphi A is a causative agent of paratyphoid fever. The clinical syndrome caused by paratyphoid fever overlaps with other febrile illnesses and cannot be distinguished from typhoid fever. Conventional methods used for diagnosis are time consuming, costly, and labor-intensive. We evaluated the specificity, sensitivity, and application of a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) previously developed by the method (Ou, H.Y., Teh, C.S.J., Thong, K.L., et al., J. Mol. Diagn., 9, 624-630, 2007) using 6 S. Paratyphi A, 22 S. Typhi, and 85 other Salmonella serovars as well as 36 non-Salmonella strains. The detection limit of the multiplex …

In this study, the kinetics of adsorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solution onto palm shell-based activated carbon (PSAC) were investigated by employing ion selective electrode (ISE) for real-time Pb(II) and pH monitoring. Usage of ISE was very appropriate for real-time adsorption kinetics data collection as it facilitated recording of adsorption data at very specific and short time intervals as well as provided consistent kinetics data. Parameters studied were initial Pb(II) concentration and agitation speed. It was found that increases in initial Pb(II) concentration and agitation speed resulted in higher initial rate of adsorption. Pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order, Elovich, intraparticle diffusion …
African Women In The New Diaspora: Transnationalism And The (Re) Creation Of Home, Mary J. Osirim
African Women In The New Diaspora: Transnationalism And The (Re) Creation Of Home, Mary J. Osirim
Sociology Faculty Research and Scholarship
During the past 25 years, African immigrants have been arriving in the US in increasing numbers due to the push factors of globalization, wars, civil unrest and natural disasters. Drawing on in-depth interviews with African women as immigrants in Greater Boston and Philadelphia, this paper will explore how the intersections of gender, race and class affect their contributions to civil society and business development. This work illustrates how transnational ties, specifically in the form of a new pan-Africanism, lead African immigrants to make significant contributions to community revitalization, particularly in historically African American communities. Although African women immigrants are clearly …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a severe personality disorder characterized by instability of mood, relationships and self-image as well as impulsive, self-damaging, and suicidal behaviors. One of the more disturbing symptoms of BPD is self-injurious behavior, a symptom that occurs in 50 to 80% of individuals diagnosed with BPD. However, interest in self-harm in the general population, particularly among college-aged individuals, has increased in recent years as researchers have become aware of the increasing prevalence of this phenomenon. Several variables have been found to be associated with self-harm, including BPD symptoms, dissociation, depression, substance abuse, impulsivity and decision-making deficits. However, …

The Other Side Of Metamorphosis: An Exploratory Study Of How Partners Of Transsexuals Experience Transition, Kara Harvey
Master's Theses - Sociology and Anthropology
Interest in, and research within, transgender studies has exploded in recent years. The majority of the research, however, has focused primarily on the experience of transsexuals1 themselves. Romantic partners of transsexuals, though, have remained unexplored within the literature. Details of their experiences in the romantic relationship and during their partners’ transitions have yet to be investigated within scholarly research.

Biology Of Dendroctonus Murrayanae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) In Idaho And Montana And Comparative Taxonomic Notes, Malcolm M. Furniss, Sandra J. Kegley
Entomology Papers from Other Sources
We studied the biology of Dendroctonus murrayanae Hopkins (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) in lodgepole pine, Pinus contorta Douglas, in Idaho and Montana. The beetle was not a primary agent of tree mortality. Susceptible host trees were physically damaged, had thin foliage, or were otherwise predisposed to infestation. Beetles attacked individual trees, not in groups, near ground level and at low density. Life stages and their behavior are described. Egg galleries were constructed upward and usually had short spurs. Mating occurred in the egg gallery. Eggs were laid in an elongated group, not in niches, in a shallow excavation along only one …

On December 11, 2007, the science of mammalogy lost one of its most valued and influential leaders. Terry Lamon Yates succumbed to complications of treatments for an aggressive form of brain cancer after a brief but courageous fight. He was born on March 17, 1950, in Mayfield, Kentucky, the older son of Ellen Wanda Byrd and William Hanley Yates. Terry’s only sibling was a brother, Johnny. He is survived by his wife Nancy Fennell Yates, his two sons, Brian Christopher and Michael Ryan, and daughter-in-law Laura Manchéno Macia.

Association Of Odor Measures With Annoyance: Results Of An Odor-Monitoring Field Study, Richard R. Stowell, Christopher G. Henry, Richard K. Koelsch, Dennis D. Schulte
Nebraska Swine Reports
Multiple assessments of ambient odor were made by trained individuals around a swine finishing operation in eastern Nebraska. Assessor responses were analyzed to determine relationships between field odor measurements/ ratings and ratings of annoyance potential, and to identify candidate measurement threshold values for causing annoyance. The likelihood of annoyance increased as odors became more offensive, intense, and concentrated, with r2 values of 0.89, 0.81, and 0.64, respectively. Candidate thresholds were sought to delineate both “any degree of stated annoyance" and "consequential annoyance," defined as likely causing a change in behavior or activity level and instilling some memory of the …

Recognition And Enforcement Of U.S. Punitive Damages Awards In Continental Europe: The Italian Supreme Court's Veto, Francesco Quarta
Recognition And Enforcement Of U.S. Punitive Damages Awards In Continental Europe: The Italian Supreme Court's Veto, Francesco Quarta
UC Law SF International Law Review
Once again, a European court denied the enforcement of a U.S. punitive damages award. Different actors, same outcome: punitive damages are deemed contrary to public policy in Europe, where the different national systems of civil liability do not seek punishment, but strict compensation. This article studies the developments of punitive damages within the United States, highlighting the anomalies that such doctrine carries with regard to both private and criminal law. Among the explicit goals of this study is the disclosure of the main (constitutional) hurdles which the Italian legal system poses to the judicial recognition of U.S. punitive damages awards. …
Throwing Black Babies Out With The Bathwater: A Child-Centered Challenge To Same-Sex Adoption Bans, Tanya M. Washington
Throwing Black Babies Out With The Bathwater: A Child-Centered Challenge To Same-Sex Adoption Bans, Tanya M. Washington
UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice
This article advances an orphan-centered constitutional challenge to placement bans that highlights the impact of these bans on Black orphans. It asserts permanency, and the stability and security that permanent placement provides, as interests embraced by the best interests of the child standard and protected against state infringement by Substantive Due Process guarantees. It also argues that orphans possess a negative liberty interest in freedom from state action that categorically forecloses adoption without conducting an individualized review of the orphan's needs or the competencies of the potential parents. This article's challenge to the constitutionality of these bans is situated within …
The Visible Hand And The New American Biology: Toward An Integrated Historiography Of Railroad-Supported Agricultural Research, Kevin S. Amidon Ph.D.
The Visible Hand And The New American Biology: Toward An Integrated Historiography Of Railroad-Supported Agricultural Research, Kevin S. Amidon Ph.D.
Modern Languages Faculty Publications
In the early twentieth century, American railroad companies faced new challenges. The railroad network had developed fully, broad political opposition was gaining teeth in new, enforceable federal legislation, and financial markets-first established to support railroad expansion- had begun to move beyond railroads. Railroad companies answered with a wide range of new managerial and scientific practices. Recent scholarship that goes beyond the traditional disciplinary separation of technological, political, managerial, economic, and scientific concerns has enabled historians to recognize that agricultural research pursued in concert with other institutions empowered railroads to address all of these challenges in the period between 1900 and …

“Diesmal Fehlt Die Biologie!” Max Horkheimer, Richard Thurnwald, And The Biological Prehistory Of German Sozialforschung, Kevin S. Amidon Ph.D.
Modern Languages Faculty Publications
In his early writings Max Horkheimer explored the issues surrounding biological explanation in Kantian and neo-Kantian philosophy. After he became director of the Institut für Sozialforschung in 1930, he continued to explore the relationships between biology, materialism, philosophy, and social theory. This interest was reflected both in his editorial policy for the Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung and in his own scholarly development that led to the development of critical theory in the later 1930s and the anti-Semitism research of the 1940s. Horkheimer's interests and ambitions also generated resistance from other social scientists. The Berlin ethnologist Richard Thurnwald, along with his student …

Effects Of Concentrate Level And Pen Configuration On Performance Of Boer Crossbred Goat Kids, M. E. Corrigan, J. S. Drouillard, E. R. Loe, B. E. Depenbusch, M. J. Quinn
Panhandle Research and Extension Center
One hundred eighty-one Boer-sired goat kids from dams of predominantly Spanish breeding (17.6 ± 2.34 kg initial BW; 177 wethers, 4 doelings) were used to determine optimum inclusion level of concentrate in diets fed to goats in confinement. Effects of elevated loafing areas on performance were also examined. Goats were blocked by weight (2 blocks per treatment) and randomly assigned to 1 of 12 outdoor pens (4.3 m2; 15 to 16 head/pen) with concrete floors. Pens of goats were randomly assigned, within block, to 1 of 6 treatments. A 2 × 3 factorial arrangement was used with factors consisting of …

Interval Mapping Of Quantitative Trait Loci For Corky Ringspot Disease Resistance In A Tetraploid Population Of Potato (Solanum Tuberosum Subsp. Tuberosum), Dong-Man Khu, Jim Lorenzen, Christine A. Hackett, Stephen L. Love
Panhandle Research and Extension Center
Corky ringspot disease (CRS) resistance is an ideal target trait for breeding using marker-assisted selection (MAS) due to the high variability in field disease incidence that complicates screening for resistance. To develop molecular marker(s) associated with CRS resistance, a linkage map was constructed for a tetraploid population of 92 genotypes in order to conduct quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis. The population was tested for CRS resistance in an infested screening field for four years. Broad sense heritability and its standard error of CRS disease resistance were 0.80 (±0.16). A total of 892 AFLP, 95 SSR, and 5 SSCP markers were …

Using Temporally Limited Wind Data In The Wind Erosion Prediction System, Simon Van Donk, Chaoying Liao, Edward L. Skidmore
West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte
The Wind Erosion Prediction System (WEPS) is a computer model for the simulation of windblown sediment loss from a field. The model is used to evaluate the effect of alternative cropping systems and management scenarios on wind erosion. WEPS requires hourly wind data, which for many locations are unavailable. Therefore, the objective of our research was to investigate whether wind speed and direction can be simulated adequately from temporally limited data and to determine suitable times of the day to take measurements if only a few measurements per day can be made. For three locations (La Junta, Colorado; Sidney, Nebraska; …

Panhandle Research and Extension Center
A 167-d feedlot study was conducted to evaluate feeding increasing levels of dry distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) to finishing cattle and the impact on performance and profitability. Crossbred steer calves (n = 240, BW = 306 ± 24.5 kg) were used in 30 pens with dietary treatments of 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40% DDGS dietary inclusion (DM basis). Quadratic relationships (P < 0.05) were observed for final BW and ADG as dietary DDGS increased, with the greatest ADG observed at 20% inclusion. The DMI was not affected (P > 0.15) by DDGS level, but G:F tended to be quadratic (P = 0.10) as 20% DM inclusion had the greatest value, although steers fed all levels of DDGS had numerically greater G:F compared with steers fed no …
