We present a draft genome sequence of the platypus, Ornithorhynchus anatinus. This monotreme exhibits a fascinating combination of reptilian and mammalian characters. For example, platypuses have a coat of fur adapted to an aquatic lifestyle; platypus females lactate, yet lay eggs; and males are equipped with venom similar to that of reptiles. Analysis of the first monotreme genome aligned these features with genetic innovations. We find that reptile and platypus venom proteins have been co-opted independently from the same gene families; milk protein genes are conserved despite platypuses laying eggs; and immune gene family expansions are directly related to platypus …

Effects Of The Wetlands Reserve Program On Waterfowl Carrying Capacity In The Rainwater Basin Region Of South-Central Nebraska, Andy A. Bishop, Mark P. Vrtiska
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
The purpose of this Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) assessment was to evaluate the energetic contribution of the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) for migratory waterfowl using the Rainwater Basin Wetland Complex (RWB). The RWB is located in south central Nebraska and encompasses 6,150 mi2 that is dominated by row crop agriculture. Historically, > 204,000 acres of playa wetlands were scattered across this region, but currently, just over 40,000 acres of wetlands remain. Annually, an estimated 12.4 million migratory waterfowl use this region during fall and/or spring migrations. Although used with less intensity as a fall stopover, approximately 9.8 million birds use …

Knowledge Of Undergraduate Psychology-Major Students Of The Apa Code Of Ethics, Aziz Atweh
Theses and Dissertations
The initial driving force of this study was to examine the knowledge and familiarity of undergraduate psychology-major students at Rowan University with the American Psychological Association's code of ethics or ethics code. An adapted version of a 1982 questionnaire containing vignettes of clinical and research situations that required 'ethical' decision-making processes was used. The original questionnaire and design of the study were conceived by Tymchuck et al. For purposes of the current study, however, the original vignettes were slightly adapted in order to fit neatly into the APA's 2002 code of ethics. Although the only statistically significant results showed that …

Tradition Of African Story Telling: Oral Literature In The Homes And Schools (Pre-School/Kindergarten) Of Northern Malawi, Elisabeth Hangartner-Everts
Tradition Of African Story Telling: Oral Literature In The Homes And Schools (Pre-School/Kindergarten) Of Northern Malawi, Elisabeth Hangartner-Everts
College of Education and Human Services Student Publications
Writing about the story telling tradition in a limited area of the northern region of Malawi may seem far-fetched. Malawi is a small, poor country lying at the southern tip of the East African Rift Valley. The majority of people in the Western Developed World have never heard of this landlocked country in subequatorial Africa, commonly referred to by Malawians as “the warm heart of Africa.” (Catholic Relief Services, 2007, pp. 7-9). The few that are aware of its existence are international aid workers and some courageous eco-tourists crisscrossing the country by bike. One cannot ignore the dire poverty of …

Causes Of Whitening Of Ivy Geraniums (Pelargonium Peltatum), Ritu Dhir
Causes Of Whitening Of Ivy Geraniums (Pelargonium Peltatum), Ritu Dhir
Theses and Dissertations
The development of whitening of the youngest leaves of actively growing ivy geranium (Pelargonium peltatum L.) has been observed as the season changes from late spring to summer. This study was conducted to determine the specific environmental causes of whitening, if micronutrients deficiencies cause similar whitening, whether low night temperatures can reverse whitening, and whether salicylic acid affects growth and whitening in ivy geraniums. Two cultivars, ‘Beach’ and ‘Butterfly’, with different susceptibility to whitening were chosen for this study. Elevated air temperature, but not elevated root-zone temperature, was found to be the environmental cause of whitening in ivy geranium. Elevated …

Effect Of Phosphorous Poisoning On Catalytic Cracking Of Lipids For Green Diesel Production, Stephen Thomas Dufreche
Effect Of Phosphorous Poisoning On Catalytic Cracking Of Lipids For Green Diesel Production, Stephen Thomas Dufreche
Theses and Dissertations
Biodiesel is one of the most widely used biofuels in the world, due in part to its simplicity of production, compatibility with existing engines, and reduction of green house gas emissions. However, technical difficulties with biodiesel include: (1) the need of highly refined oil for ASTM compliance, (2) incompatibility with the petroleum-diesel pipeline distribution system, and (3) a relatively small inventory of expensive feedstocks. Issues (1) and (2) could be overcome by the production of biofuels using chemical processes associated with petroleum refining. Catalytic lipid cracking could result in green diesel, a fuel chemically similar to conventional diesel but derived …
Generative Response., Catherine Juanita Martin
Generative Response., Catherine Juanita Martin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Within this supporting paper, the artist discusses Generative Response, her Master of Fine Arts exhibition. This paper is a narrative of the artist's development, philosophies, and methodologies. Further, it illustrates how her work and development have been affected by studies in humanity, social activism, human responsibility, and environmental consciousness.
Generative Response communicated the artist's ideology of process as metaphor for living life, involving the viewer in an "unfinished dialogue" wherein works of art undergo processes translating their role as part of a generative cycle. Generative Response was composed of seven sculptural components called "stations" depicting the processes of growth, …

Evaluating Satisfaction And Benefit Of Nutrition Counseling Provided By A Registered Dietitian Among Cancer Patients Receiving Radiation Therapy., Bethany A. Stuart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if patients with cancer receiving radiation therapy were satisfied with the nutrition counseling they were receiving and if they obtained any benefit. Radiation increases the risk for side effects such as taste changes, chewing/swallowing problems, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. When these side effects are present, a decrease in food and fluid intake occurs, which leads to weight loss, increased risk of morbidity and mortality, as well as decreased quality of life. Subjects were recruited from a regional cancer treatment facility and a survey was administered to those who met criteria. Subjects …

Effects Of Body Mass, Physiographic Region, And Environmental Cues On Reproductive Timing In Deer, Michael Paul Dye
Theses and Dissertations
The reproductive timing and success of white-tailed deer are important to managers. I evaluated the reproductive variability of pen-raised deer and wild populations within Mississippi and investigated effects of age, body condition and moon phase on conception dates. I also examined the reproductive potential of doe fawns from 3 regions of Mississippi. Individual conception dates varied more than expected and were not related to moon phase. Age affected individual conception date, although the effect may have been confounded by estimated gestation length. Population level variation was less than reported and could not be explained by moon phase or late-winter body …
