Effects Of Five Different Intensities Of Stand Establishment On Wildlife Habitat Quality And Tree Growth In Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda) Plantations In Southern Mississippi, Phillip Daniel Jones

Theses and Dissertations

I evaluated effects of 5 intensive pine plantation establishment regimes during years 1 – 5 post-establishment on vegetation communities, loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) growth, nutritional carrying capacity for white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), habitat values for northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus), and projected financial viability in the Lower Coastal Plain of Mississippi. Treatments were combinations of mechanical site preparation (MSP), chemical site preparation (CSP), and herbaceous weed control (HWC) designed to reflect the range of operational intensities on industrial forest lands in the southeastern U.S. Results should inform plantation management decisions throughout the region. Pine growth increased with greater treatment intensity. At …

Effects Of Imazapyr And Prescribed Fire On Vegetation And Bird Communities In Mid-Rotation Crp Pine Plantations Of Mississippi, Lindsey Rae Carpenter Singleton

Theses and Dissertations

Appropriate management of mid-rotation pine plantations can improve habitat for early successional and pine-grassland adapted avian species. I tested effects of Imazapyr selective herbicide and prescribed fire on plant and avian communities in thinned, mid-rotation pine stands contracted under the Conservation Reserve Program. Within 12 replicate sites, 2 8.1-ha plots were assigned either herbicide and prescribed fire treatment or control. I described components of vegetation structure and composition in 2006. I tested effects of herbicide and prescribed fire treatment on avian relative abundance, species richness, total avian conservation value, and density of select species during 2003 - 2006. Hardwood midstory …

Identification Of Disease And Weather Related Loss Factors And An Efficiency Measure Affecting The U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish Industry, Seanicaa E. Edwardsorris May 2008

Identification Of Disease And Weather Related Loss Factors And An Efficiency Measure Affecting The U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish Industry, Seanicaa E. Edwardsorris

Theses and Dissertations

This study analyzed factors that affected catfish losses from diseases and weather events and factors that affected onarm efficiency. A double limit tobit model was used to determine the magnitudes of losses experienced by producers due to these events, while a linear regression model was used to determine factors that affect efficiency. Results from the weather model indicate all variables are significant and positively affect loss while producer experience and pond depth were the only significant variables that affected disease loss. The efficiency model results provide information that could be increased or decreased in order to obtain a more efficient …

Exploratory Study Of The Caregivers' Perceived Barriers To Healthy Eating In The Mississippi Delta, Caroline Ruth Mccracken

Theses and Dissertations

The Mississippi Delta has been recognized for its poverty level and high rate of obesity. As an effort to combat the obesity issue while also considering the poverty issue of the population, a descriptive analysis was developed to understand what intervention might be beneficial. Focus groups were conducted to determine barriers to healthy eating behaviors for children, grades K-2. Focus groups (n=6) with parents or guardians of children from the six elementary schools in the Mississippi Delta were conducted in the Spring of 2007. The emergent themes included, perceived healthy foods, where diet information had been retrieved, and the efforts …

Revisiting A Model Of Ontogenetic Growth: Estimating Model Parameters From Theory And Data, Melanie E. Moses, Chen Hou, William H. Woodruff, Geoffrey B. West, Jeffery C. Nekola, Wenyun Zuo, James H. Brown

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

The ontogenetic growth model (OGM) of West et al. provides a general description of how metabolic energy is allocated between production of new biomass and maintenance of existing biomass during ontogeny. Here, we reexamine the OGM, make some minor modifications and corrections, and further evaluate its ability to account for empirical variation on rates of metabolism and biomass in vertebrates both during ontogeny and across species of varying adult body size. We show that the updated version of the model is internally consistent and is consistent with other predictions of metabolic scaling theory and empirical data. The OGM predicts not …

Factors Influencing Topotecan Cns Penetration In Mouse Models, Jun Shen May 2008

Factors Influencing Topotecan Cns Penetration In Mouse Models, Jun Shen

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Camptothecin analogs such as topotecan are currently tested in clinical trials for brain tumors. However the clinical outcome is far below the expectations, which are derived from the promising preclinical studies. This discrepancy could be partially attributed to the presence of two barrier systems in the brain, the blood brain barrier (BBB) and blood cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier (BCB). Further investigations have demonstrated multiple ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters are present at the two barriers. Camptothecin analogs are well known substrates for several of the transporters. This work defined the role of two ABC transporters, Bcrp1 and P-gp in determination of …

Analysis Of The Cyc1 Promoter In Candida Albicans, Tomica Blocker May 2008

Analysis Of The Cyc1 Promoter In Candida Albicans, Tomica Blocker

McCabe Thesis Collection

Scientists are considering two factors that may be important in the pathogenesis of C. albicans', it's capability to morph from yeast to hyphal phase, and its differences in colony morphology, cell shape, cell surface and cell permeability. (5) Unfortunately, unlike the bacteria, yeasts do not yet have proven virulence factors. However, science is suggesting that some of the major factors which contribute to the virulence of Candida are its ability to form hyphae, its ability to resist phagocytosis, its ability to adhere to epithelial cell surfaces, its ability to grow well at 37 degrees Celsius, and its ability to secrete …

The Relationship Between Learning Styles And Student Performance On The Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test In A Low Performing, Low Socioeconomic-Status School, Joseph Lassale Williams

Dissertations

The intention of this research was to bring light to the current state mandated testing, and possible solutions in assisting educators to address the issues of students not meeting the standards. In more general terms, this study is looking to prove to what extent a student's learning style has on their performance on the Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test (PACT). This study analyzed four of the twenty-six learning preference areas identified by the Learning Style Instrument (LSI) of middle school students in a traditional public middle school in seventh grade. The four areas that were looked at were kinesthetic, tactile, auditory, …

A Wellness Guide For Recruiting Non-Participants Into A Worksite Health Promotion Program, Lorenzo Patrick Cassella Jr. May 2008

A Wellness Guide For Recruiting Non-Participants Into A Worksite Health Promotion Program, Lorenzo Patrick Cassella Jr.

Graduate Theses

Rising costs of healthcare have motivated employers to offer comprehensive health promotion programs to their employees, to reduce health risk factors such as physical inactivity, poor nutrition, high stress, etc., thereby lowering both direct (i.e., medical) costs and indirect (i.e., absenteeism) costs. The majority of worksite health promotion (WHP) programs only show short-term (i.e., under 12 weeks) employee improvement in any one type of program for a few reasons; > Employers develop action-oriented tools. > Employers do not match current programs with the condition of their population. ^ Employers do not integrate the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) and the Processes of Change into …

Social Work With Affluent And Low-Income Families: Attribution Theory, Katharine Terbush May 2008

Social Work With Affluent And Low-Income Families: Attribution Theory, Katharine Terbush

Social Work Theses

A study to assess attribution theory and the work done by social workers with wealthy and poor families was performed using two vignettes identical in information suggesting abuse, with one described as a wealthy family and the other a family living in poverty. Attribution theory suggests that humans label and assume certain traits to be true of different persons based on their status in our society. A person with a wealthy status may be viewed by their social worker as less likely to be abusive to their children because of their status, while a person living in poverty would be …
