Energization-Dependent Endogenous Activation Of Proton Conductance In Skeletal Muscle Mitochondria., Nadeene Parker, Charles Affourtit, Antonio Vidal-Puig, Martin D. Brand

School of Biomedical Sciences

Leak of protons into the mitochondrial matrix during substrate oxidation partially uncouples electron transport from phosphorylation of ADP, but the functions and source of basal and inducible proton leak in vivo remain controversial. In the present study we describe an endogenous activation of proton conductance in mitochondria isolated from rat and mouse skeletal muscle following addition of respiratory substrate. This endogenous activation increased with time, required a high membrane potential and was diminished by high concentrations of serum albumin. Inhibition of this endogenous activation by GDP [classically considered specific for UCPs (uncoupling proteins)], carboxyatractylate and bongkrekate (considered specific for the …

The Role Of Mitochondria Atp-Sensitive Potassium Channel In Cardioprotection, Ksenia Andrukhiv Everton May 2008

The Role Of Mitochondria Atp-Sensitive Potassium Channel In Cardioprotection, Ksenia Andrukhiv Everton

Dissertations and Theses

Mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium channel (mitoKATP) has been suggested to be the mediator of cardiac preconditioning. All of the diverse pharmacological and physiological agents that open mitoKATP provide protection against ischemia-reperfusion injury. Some investigators have pointed out that some of these mitoKATP channel openers also inhibit succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), complex II of the electron transport chain. Based on this observation they suggest that it is the inhibition of SDH, and not the opening of mitoKATP channel, that mediates the observed cardioprotection. In this study, I examined four chemically distinct and unrelated pharmacological agents, diazoxide, 3-Nitropropionic Acid …

The Relevance Of Lactose Intolerance On The Development Of Osteoporosis In Middle-Aged Adults Via Bone Mass Density (Bmd) Scanning, Kristin Duffy May 2008

The Relevance Of Lactose Intolerance On The Development Of Osteoporosis In Middle-Aged Adults Via Bone Mass Density (Bmd) Scanning, Kristin Duffy

Honors College Theses

The purpose of this experiment was to determine whether or not lactose intolerance has an effect on the development of osteoporosis. I hypothesized that lactose intolerance would not increase a person's risk of osteoporosis. In order to test this hypothesis, a sample group of 300 people was generated. All of these people were of generally good health and between the ages of 40-50. They were separated into three subgroups based on severity of lactose intolerance by means of a hydrogen breath test: non-lactose intolerant, moderately lactose intolerant, and severely lactose intolerant. Each individual was then administered a BMD (bone mineral …

Attributes Of Effective Head Start Mental Health Consultants : A Mixed Method Study Of Rural And Urban Programs, Mary Dallas Allen May 2008

Attributes Of Effective Head Start Mental Health Consultants : A Mixed Method Study Of Rural And Urban Programs, Mary Dallas Allen

Dissertations and Theses

Early childhood mental health consultation (ECMHC) is the primary strategy implemented by Head Start programs to address the social and emotional needs of children and their families, but little is known about the attributes of early childhood mental health consultants (MHCs) that contribute to consultants' relationships with Head Start staff and to consultation outcomes. The present study examined how attributes of MHCs contribute to positive relationships between the MHCs and Head Start staff and to improved consultation outcomes. Seven attributes of rural and urban mental health consultants were examined: MHC training, supervision, and support; MHC understanding of consultant role; MHC …

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Life for all organisms involves carefully managing a limited amount of resources. In many cases these resources affect how organisms Jive on a daily basis. In addition to competition from other species, organisms face competition within their own species, populations, and niches. Those individuals that manage their resources effectively will increase their chances of survival, reproduction, and the continuation of their genes in the gene pool. Studies that focus on life history characteristics of organisms aim to understand the mechanisms used by organisms to increase the chances that their genes will remain in thegenepoolpasttheirown Iifetime.Thegoal ofthesemechanisms istoensuresurvival and maximize reproduction. …

The Perceived Impact Of Location Privacy: A Web-Based Survey Of Public Health Perspectives And Requirements In The Uk And Canada., Philip Abdelmalik, Maged N.Kamel Boulos, Ray Jones

School of Nursing and Midwifery

BACKGROUND: The "place-consciousness" of public health professionals is on the rise as spatial analyses and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are rapidly becoming key components of their toolbox. However, "place" is most useful at its most precise, granular scale - which increases identification risks, thereby clashing with privacy issues. This paper describes the views and requirements of public health professionals in Canada and the UK on privacy issues and spatial data, as collected through a web-based survey. METHODS: Perceptions on the impact of privacy were collected through a web-based survey administered between November 2006 and January 2007. The survey targeted government, …
