Bureau Of Letters: Literary Federalism, The Hoover Raids, And The New Negro Renaissance, William J. Maxwell

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Examining J. Edgar Hoover's career as a literary federalist before he assumed the FBI directorship in 1924, "Bureau of Letters" traces the unexpected origins of the FBI's constitutive fascination with African-American modernism.

Snyc, Freedomways, And The Influence Of The Popular Front In The South On The Black Arts Movement, James Smethurst Jan 2008

Snyc, Freedomways, And The Influence Of The Popular Front In The South On The Black Arts Movement, James Smethurst

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Tracing out cultural and political affiliations that persisted despite the effort of the repressive state apparatus, this essay examines the oft-neglected organizational and cultural connections between the Old Left and the new. Arguing that the work of Popular Front artists and activists in the South prefigured Black Arts literature and visual arts notions of how artists should relate to the community that marked, the paper recasts the continuities between the 1930s and 1960s.

Telling The Truth In The Headquarters Of Lying: Intellectuals Writing For Fortune Magazine In The 1930s, Robert Vanderlan Jan 2008

Telling The Truth In The Headquarters Of Lying: Intellectuals Writing For Fortune Magazine In The 1930s, Robert Vanderlan

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Fortune, a magazine intended to chronicle American industrial life, evolved from employing broadly apolitical writers who were critical and disdainful of his business readership, to drawing upon "interstitial intellectuals", pursuing their own literary, political, and intellectual interests from the spaces they created and defended within corporate organizations. Fortune's assumptions provided concrete support for the New Deal and its expansive new role for the government, sometimes legitimating more radical demands. Crucial to Fortune's success was the self-identification of its journalists as intellectuals. Luce could not impose his own vision for Fortune's journalism on his writers. In contrast their …

Defending Left Pedagogy: U.S. Communist Schools Fight Back Against The Sacb . . . And Lose (1953-1957), Marvin E. Gettleman Jan 2008

Defending Left Pedagogy: U.S. Communist Schools Fight Back Against The Sacb . . . And Lose (1953-1957), Marvin E. Gettleman

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

During the 1940s and 1950s the U.S. Communist Party upgraded and broadened its adult education schools, abandoning or ideologically modifying the militant pedagogical centers that had sprung up during the 1920s and 1930s in many American cities. In New York the transformation was complicated as two Party schools (the Workers School and the School for Democracy) merged with each other to create in 1943 the Thomas Jefferson School of Social Science. The California Labor School in San Francisco was the West Coast counterpart of the Jefferson School. [2] I shall try to argue later in this paper that …

Guess Who's Welcome To Dinner: Contemporary Interracial Romance And The New Racism, Tru Leverette Jan 2008

Guess Who's Welcome To Dinner: Contemporary Interracial Romance And The New Racism, Tru Leverette

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Although contemporary representations of interracial romance may appear, on the surface, progressive, they share elements of what Patricia Hill Collins has called "past in present" racism; that is, although the films no longer portray interracial romance as taboo, their presentations obscure deeper messages that perpetuate traditional views of interracial romance, race, and gender. This article analyzes a classic interracial romance film, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, and two contemporary films, Guess Who and Something New, in order to explore traditional ideologies inherent within these seemingly progressive representations. Both contemporary films present interracial romance as acceptable, but only within …

So Far From Political Punditry: Everyday Digital Storytelling In Italy, Enrico Maria Milič, Enrico Marchetto, Roberto Costa Jan 2008

So Far From Political Punditry: Everyday Digital Storytelling In Italy, Enrico Maria Milič, Enrico Marchetto, Roberto Costa

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Through on-line quantitative research, this paper analyses, what can be considered some of the political dimensions of blogs. The analysis cross-compares some of the narratives emerging in the on-line debate about this research (and blogging in general), and the quantitative data that resulted from a questionnaire and other studies about blogs outside Italy. After an overview of the composition of the sample, the paper outlines some of the recurrent genres used by bloggers and how these are related to political discourses. Particular relevance is given to data about female bloggers that counters the gendered focus by journalists and scholars about …

Fetishizing Death: Hyperspaces For Freedom, Dina Nashar Baroud Jan 2008

Fetishizing Death: Hyperspaces For Freedom, Dina Nashar Baroud

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

In this article Dina Nashar Baroud explores, using the Iraq war and its media coverage as her point of reference, a larger trend to fetishization in the emergent politics of the image. This politics as image combines the most important components of the fetish, which becomes simultaneously an illusion, a seductive commodity, and, most importantly, a pulverization of history into fragments. And yet, given the image network's intimate relationship to hegemonic technologies, the pulverization of history in favor of images is not simply something we can reject. Employing the ideological theorization of Slavoj Žižek, where ideology is not what we …

On Ian Tyrrell's Transnational Nation: United States History In Global Perspective, Alexandra Ganser Jan 2008

On Ian Tyrrell's Transnational Nation: United States History In Global Perspective, Alexandra Ganser

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

About nine decades after Randolph Bourne's much-cited pamphlet "Trans-National America" was published on the eve of the U.S.'s entry to World War [1], the field of American Studies has recently undergone what has been called a transnational turn. Within this paradigm, the focus of study is increasingly on the transnational exchange of ideas and goods, on border-crossing migrations of people, and on how all of these movements shape (and are shaped by) cultural discourses within and outside the U.S., always in a historically diachronic perspective [2]. Bourne, coining the term "trans-national", started his essay by an analysis of …

Review Of Cultural Globalization: A User's Guide, By J. Macgregor Wise, Samuel Gerald Collins Jan 2008

Review Of Cultural Globalization: A User's Guide, By J. Macgregor Wise, Samuel Gerald Collins

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

There's no question that Wise's Cultural Globalization is a useful addition to cultural studies pedagogy. In a field dominated by a hand-full of textbooks - Storey's Cultural Theory and Popular Culture, During's Cultural Studies, Hebdige's Subcultures - it's nice to have an alternative for your staid, "introduction to cultural studies" syllabus. And this one is resolutely global, with examples drawn from all over the world, especially East and Southeast Asia, testament to Wise's childhood perambulations.

Bringing Global Sourcing Into The Classroom: Experiential Learning Via Software Development Project, Monica Adya, Dhruv Nath, Varadharajan Sridhar, Amit Malik

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Global sourcing of software development has imposed new skill requirements on Information Technology (IT) personnel. In the U.S., this has resulted in a paradigm shift from technical to softer skills such as communications and virtual team management. Higher education institutions must, consequently, initiate innovative curriculum transformations to better prepare students for these emerging workforce needs. This paper describes one such venture between Marquette University (MU), U.S.A. and Management Development Institute (MDI), India, wherein IT students at MU collaborated with Management Information Systems (MIS) students at MDI on an offshore software development project. The class environment replicated an offshore client/vendor relationship …

Suppression Of Aromatase In Human Breast Cells By A Cyclooxygenase-2 Inhibitor And Its Analog Involves Multiple Mechanisms Independent Of Cyclooxygenase-2 Inhibition, Bin Su, Edgar S. Diaz-Cruz, Serena Landini, Robert W. Brueggemeier Jan 2008

Brueggemeier

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Previous studies have demonstrated that cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor NS-398 decrease aromatase activity at the transcript level in breast cancer cells. However, N-Methyl NS-398, which does not have COX-2 inhibitory activity but has very similar structure to NS-398, decreases aromatase activity and transcription in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cells to the same extent as NS-398. This suggests that NS-398 decrease aromatase expression in breast cancer cells via other mechanism(s). Further investigations find that both compounds only decrease aromatase activity stimulated by forskolin/phorbol ester at the transcript level in both breast cancer cell lines and in breast stromal cells from patients. They …

Misyar Marriage As Human Trafficking In Saudi Arabia, Stephanie Doe Jan 2008

Misyar Marriage As Human Trafficking In Saudi Arabia, Stephanie Doe

Global Tides

The severity and scope of human trafficking for sexual and labor exploitation has been grossly understudied until this past decade. Reliable information on how and why trafficking in persons occurs is scarce, especially for the Middle East. Saudi Arabia’s notorious policies of discrimination against women serve as the starting point. In Saudi Arabia, the monarchy has co-opted the traditional roles of women as an emblem of its own Islamic character, thereby making it a symbol of its national heritage. An entrenched institution of patriarchy uses gender construction as an instrument of state policy and state security. This intimate relationship between …

Bytes And Bombs: Information Warfare And Accidental Nuclear War, Nicholas Stewart Jan 2008

Bytes And Bombs: Information Warfare And Accidental Nuclear War, Nicholas Stewart

Global Tides

While both information warfare and accidental nuclear war have been discussed in detail in academia, their intersection has long been ignored. Information warfare can be used to create animosity between states and could even spark war during times of crisis. Furthermore, not all states benefit from the technology advances of the first world: nations like Russia and Pakistan have disturbing gaps in their nuclear command and control that could be easily exploited by other states, internal factions or even terrorist organizations. Comparing the information vulnerabilities of the United States, Russia and Pakistan, one can only conclude that immediate action is …

Economic Developments In Tajikistan, Tyler Haupert Jan 2008

Economic Developments In Tajikistan, Tyler Haupert

Global Tides

Poor nations often leave countless young males without an education, a stable family, or a strong government to follow. These conditions make the choice to join a group of religious radicals appealing. Tajikistan, a country of over seven million located just north of Afghanistan in Central Asia, is surrounded by war torn, politically unstable neighbors and fits the profile of a hotbed for religious radicalism. While the country has avoided a large-scale international war, political instability and economic deficiencies have left Tajikistan primed for future conflict. The situation presents an intriguing study for those concerned with humanitarian issues and those …

Rules Of Engagement: Seeking Moral And Legal Sufficiency In The 21st Century, Tanner Williams Jan 2008

Rules Of Engagement: Seeking Moral And Legal Sufficiency In The 21st Century, Tanner Williams

Global Tides

Modern conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan has proved to be unlike any other conflict in history. United States and Coalition forces are faced with an insurgent enemy that defies all pre-established Laws of Armed Combat. As we transition from a wartime operations to a peacekeeping environment, it is important to reflect upon the moral and legal struggles that our soldiers face in the line of duty. Certainly, it cannot be easy to distinguish between lawful or unlawful combatants and innocent civilians in a war that lacks a clearly defined enemy. As a result, it is necessary to examine our rules …
