Suppression Of Aromatase In Human Breast Cells By A Cyclooxygenase-2 Inhibitor And Its Analog Involves Multiple Mechanisms Independent Of Cyclooxygenase-2 Inhibition, Bin Su, Edgar S. Diaz-Cruz, Serena Landini, Robert W. Brueggemeier Jan 2008

Brueggemeier

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Previous studies have demonstrated that cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor NS-398 decrease aromatase activity at the transcript level in breast cancer cells. However, N-Methyl NS-398, which does not have COX-2 inhibitory activity but has very similar structure to NS-398, decreases aromatase activity and transcription in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cells to the same extent as NS-398. This suggests that NS-398 decrease aromatase expression in breast cancer cells via other mechanism(s). Further investigations find that both compounds only decrease aromatase activity stimulated by forskolin/phorbol ester at the transcript level in both breast cancer cell lines and in breast stromal cells from patients. They …

Misyar Marriage As Human Trafficking In Saudi Arabia, Stephanie Doe Jan 2008

Misyar Marriage As Human Trafficking In Saudi Arabia, Stephanie Doe

Global Tides

The severity and scope of human trafficking for sexual and labor exploitation has been grossly understudied until this past decade. Reliable information on how and why trafficking in persons occurs is scarce, especially for the Middle East. Saudi Arabia’s notorious policies of discrimination against women serve as the starting point. In Saudi Arabia, the monarchy has co-opted the traditional roles of women as an emblem of its own Islamic character, thereby making it a symbol of its national heritage. An entrenched institution of patriarchy uses gender construction as an instrument of state policy and state security. This intimate relationship between …

Bytes And Bombs: Information Warfare And Accidental Nuclear War, Nicholas Stewart Jan 2008

Bytes And Bombs: Information Warfare And Accidental Nuclear War, Nicholas Stewart

Global Tides

While both information warfare and accidental nuclear war have been discussed in detail in academia, their intersection has long been ignored. Information warfare can be used to create animosity between states and could even spark war during times of crisis. Furthermore, not all states benefit from the technology advances of the first world: nations like Russia and Pakistan have disturbing gaps in their nuclear command and control that could be easily exploited by other states, internal factions or even terrorist organizations. Comparing the information vulnerabilities of the United States, Russia and Pakistan, one can only conclude that immediate action is …

Economic Developments In Tajikistan, Tyler Haupert Jan 2008

Economic Developments In Tajikistan, Tyler Haupert

Global Tides

Poor nations often leave countless young males without an education, a stable family, or a strong government to follow. These conditions make the choice to join a group of religious radicals appealing. Tajikistan, a country of over seven million located just north of Afghanistan in Central Asia, is surrounded by war torn, politically unstable neighbors and fits the profile of a hotbed for religious radicalism. While the country has avoided a large-scale international war, political instability and economic deficiencies have left Tajikistan primed for future conflict. The situation presents an intriguing study for those concerned with humanitarian issues and those …

Rules Of Engagement: Seeking Moral And Legal Sufficiency In The 21st Century, Tanner Williams Jan 2008

Rules Of Engagement: Seeking Moral And Legal Sufficiency In The 21st Century, Tanner Williams

Global Tides

Modern conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan has proved to be unlike any other conflict in history. United States and Coalition forces are faced with an insurgent enemy that defies all pre-established Laws of Armed Combat. As we transition from a wartime operations to a peacekeeping environment, it is important to reflect upon the moral and legal struggles that our soldiers face in the line of duty. Certainly, it cannot be easy to distinguish between lawful or unlawful combatants and innocent civilians in a war that lacks a clearly defined enemy. As a result, it is necessary to examine our rules …

The Cultural Commons: An Interview With Michael Denning, Victor Cohen Jan 2008

The Cultural Commons: An Interview With Michael Denning, Victor Cohen

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Michael Denning is the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of American Studies at Yale University. His first two books, Cover Stories: Narrative and Ideology in the British Spy Thriller (Routledge, 1987) and Mechanic Accents: Dime Novels and Working Class Culture (Verso, 1987), examined the politics of popular fiction. He followed them up with The Cultural Front: Laboring of American Culture in the Twentieth Century (Verso, 1998), which has become the encyclopedic study of the culture of the American Popular Front. Denning's most recent work, Culture in an Age of Three Worlds (Verso, 2004), analyses the rise and fall of American …

The Color Of Permission:  Ritual, Race, And The Tanning Transformation, Mary Elizabeth Adams Jan 2008

The Color Of Permission:  Ritual, Race, And The Tanning Transformation, Mary Elizabeth Adams

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Tanning bed salons are quite popular in the United States, despite warnings that they increase cancer risks and speed the aging process. Warnings have not deterred bed tanners, who seem to value beauty ideals over health concerns. Certainly, tanning occupies a unique space in beauty culture. It offers the ability to transform quickly. And it offers, for those who are truly dissatisfied with their bodies, the ability to adopt a new identity. But why have young women continued this dangerous process when safer tanning processes are now available? This article traces bed tanning's adoption into the grooming ritual. Theories from …

Recruitment And Retention Of Entry-Level Staff In Housing And Residence Life: A Report On Activities Supported By The Acuho-I Commissioned Research Program, Maureen E. Wilson Jan 2008

Recruitment And Retention Of Entry-Level Staff In Housing And Residence Life: A Report On Activities Supported By The Acuho-I Commissioned Research Program, Maureen E. Wilson

Higher Education and Student Affairs Faculty Publications

For the past several years, many housing and residence life operations have had fewer candidates apply for the entry-level resident director position. Yet, although these institutions have experienced a shortfall in candidates, a number of housing operations continue to receive a large number of interested applicants through their recruitment efforts and they are able to retain these staff for several years. In 2004, a team of researchers was awarded an ACUHO-I Commissioned Research grant to study several issues central to recruitment and retention of entry-level staff. The researchers completed six studies that are described in this report.

Dynamics Of Directed Boolean Networks Under Generalized Elementary Cellular Automata Rules, With Power-Law Distributions And Popularity Assignment Of Parent Nodes, Ray Goodman, Mihaela T. Velcsov Jan 2008

Dynamics Of Directed Boolean Networks Under Generalized Elementary Cellular Automata Rules, With Power-Law Distributions And Popularity Assignment Of Parent Nodes, Ray Goodman, Mihaela T. Velcsov

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This study provides an analysis of the dynamics of fixed-size directed Boolean networks governed by generalizations of elementary cellular automata rules 22 and 126, under a power-law distribution of parent nodes and a popularity parent assignment. The analysis shows the existence of a two-piece chaotic attractor for smaller values of the power-law parameter which evolves into a "cloud"-like attractor for larger values of the parameter. Values of the parameter for which the system exhibits an ordered behavior are indicated as well. The dynamics are investigated using space-time diagrams, delay plots, bifurcation diagrams, and Lyapunov exponent computations. It is also shown …

Literature And Performance Of Music For Double Bass And Tape, Jeremy C. Baguyos Jan 2008

Literature And Performance Of Music For Double Bass And Tape, Jeremy C. Baguyos

Music Faculty Publications

Electroacoustic music for double bass can be classified into the following two types of repertoire: real-time/interactive computer music or tape music. Real-time/interactive computer music is the newer of the two types and involves the algorithmic generation of electronic sounds in live performance. Pre-recorded electronic sounds are usually avoided, and instead, the sound of live input is used as the source material for electronic sounds. A computer is used for capture, processing and synthesis, and the software is usually written in the MAX/MSP environment. The second category, tape music, is the older of the two types of electroacoustic music for the …

The American Hegemonic Responses To The U.S.-China Mid-Air Plane Collision, Dexin Tian, Chin-Chung Chao Jan 2008

The American Hegemonic Responses To The U.S.-China Mid-Air Plane Collision, Dexin Tian, Chin-Chung Chao

Communication Faculty Publications

This paper examines the major documents of the American side concerning the U.S.- China mid-air plane collision incident, which occurred April 1, 2001. Through the hegemonic theoretical lens of Robert Cox’s frame of action and via the research method of hermeneutics of the selected rhetorical artifacts, we aim to shed light on the understanding of the incident and provide insightful implications for handling similar international conflicts in the future. Our findings indicate that the United States has preserved the most resourceful material capabilities and established all the necessary human institutions to implement its shared notion of American hegemony all over …

Public Relations Through A New Lens—Critical Praxis Via The Excellence Theory, Adam W. Tyma Jan 2008

Public Relations Through A New Lens—Critical Praxis Via The Excellence Theory, Adam W. Tyma

Communication Faculty Publications

The “Excellence Theory” (J.E. Grunig et al., 2002) was initially developed, and is continually being tested, in order to demonstrate what makes for public relations practices that are both efficient and ethical for all parties involved. There is criticism which purports that such a normalizing theory is no longer relevant for current social, political, or corporate realities encountered by the public relations practitioner or researcher. This essay presents the “Excellence Theory” as a critical inquiry paradigm, allowing for the creation of spaces accessible by otherwise marginalized publics by the public relations practitioner.

A Partnership In Nebraska With The Humane Society, Sarah K. Edwards, Rebecca J. Pasco, M. Susan Mcwilliams, Kathy Everts Danielson

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

Perhaps service-learning continues to grow as an effective pedagogy in colleges of education because it offers everyone involved an opportunity to put words into action. With the news full of stories of bullying and school shootings, teachers and teacher candidates look for someone to help them make sense of what feels to be a growing trend of cruelty. Perhaps it is a natural reaction for teachers to want to do something positive in the face of brutality. Perhaps our wanting to be proactive corresponds to whatever drew us to education in the first place. Regardless of the cause, four literacy …

Children’S Choices For 2008: A Project Of The International Reading Association And The Children’S Book Council, Wilma Kuhlman, Kathy Everts Danielson

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

Each year 12,500 school children from different regions of the United States read and vote on the newly published children’s and young adults’ trade books that they like best. The Children’s Choices for 2008 list is the 34th in a series that first appeared as “Classroom Choices” in the November 1975 issue of The Reading Teacher (RT), a peer-reviewed journal for preschool, primary, and elementary levels published eight times a year by the International Reading Association (IRA). This list is designed for use not only by teachers, librarians, administrators, and booksellers, but also by parents, grandparents, caregivers, and everyone who …
