Low Temperature (23 °C) Increases Expression Of Biofilm-, Cold-Shock- And Rpos-Dependent Genes In Escherichia Coli K-12, Christine A. White-Ziegler, Suzin Um, Natalie M. Pérez, Abby L. Berns, Amy J. Malhowski, Sarah Young Jan 2008

Low Temperature (23 °C) Increases Expression Of Biofilm-, Cold-Shock- And Rpos-Dependent Genes In Escherichia Coli K-12, Christine A. White-Ziegler, Suzin Um, Natalie M. Pérez, Abby L. Berns, Amy J. Malhowski, Sarah Young

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Temperature serves as a cue to regulate gene expression in Escherichia coli and other bacteria. Using DNA microarrays, we identified 297 genes whose expression is increased at 23 6C compared to 37 6C in E. coli K-12. Of these genes, 122 are RpoS-controlled, confirming genome-wide the model that low temperature serves as a primary cue to trigger the general stress response. Several genes expressed at 23 6C overlap with the cold-shock response, suggesting that strategies used to adapt to sudden shifts in temperature also mediate long-term growth at 23 6C. Another category of genes more highly expressed at 23 6C …

Introducing 'Class, Culture, And Public Intellectuals': A Special Issue Of Reconstruction, Graham Barnfield, Victor Cohen, Joseph G. Ramsey Jan 2008

Introducing 'Class, Culture, And Public Intellectuals': A Special Issue Of Reconstruction, Graham Barnfield, Victor Cohen, Joseph G. Ramsey

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First two paragraphs]

Editing this issue of Reconstruction has become an illustration of the very processes that we set out to discuss and document.

Calling for papers commenced a well-defined project, with all the parameters in place for producing a routine academic work. We knew the Reconstruction editorial collective was keen to do an issue on themes of class. We were also aware of two publication anniversaries in our academic field of U.S. literary radicalism: The New York Intellectuals by Alan Wald in 1987, and The Cultural Front by Michael Denning, about a decade later. Combining a 20th anniversary …

United Auto Writers: Poetry From The United Auto Worker, 1937-1939, John Marsh Jan 2008

United Auto Writers: Poetry From The United Auto Worker, 1937-1939, John Marsh

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

During the 1930s, and as part of the effort to organize the new unions of the Congress of Industrial Organizations or to revitalize the old unions of the American Federation of Labor, hundreds of workers and labor organizers would write and publish poems in their union newspapers. In this essay, I focus on the poetry of a single union, the United Auto Workers, from its origins in the Flint-sit down strike of 1936-1937 to the campaign to organize Ford workers in the years that followed. During that period, the United Auto Worker published around 110 poems and these poems, I …

Reconstructing The Public Sphere: From The Paris Review To Intelligent Life, Andrew Calcutt Jan 2008

Reconstructing The Public Sphere: From The Paris Review To Intelligent Life, Andrew Calcutt

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Delivered in an approximation of the feature-writing style that it critiques, the essay charts the specific strategy of using magazines as the basis for the rejuvenation of the public sphere. The writerly norms established through the Paris Review and the Modern Review express changing social conditions and their impact upon intellectual strategies derived from print media.

The New York Intellectuals, The Johnson-Forest Tendency, And The Crisis Of Public Intellectuals, Manuel Yang Jan 2008

The New York Intellectuals, The Johnson-Forest Tendency, And The Crisis Of Public Intellectuals, Manuel Yang

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

For too long now the very notion of a public intellectual relies on a missionary model, of going out to the masses with a view to enlightening them. The essay analyzes past and present praxis which would abolish this approach altogether, based on close readings of the experiences of the New York Intellectuals and the Forest-Johnson Tendency.

On Warren Farrell And James P. Sterba's Does Feminism Discriminate Against Men?, Marc Ouellette Jan 2008

On Warren Farrell And James P. Sterba's Does Feminism Discriminate Against Men?, Marc Ouellette

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Until I began contemplating this review, I had never considered warning my readers about the content of my work despite my specialization and frequent engagement with gender, sex and sexuality. Indeed, I have been an anti-censorship advocate and I have written many times in defence of books that school boards were considering removing. Yet, I cannot cover Warren Farrell's "debate" with Daniel Sterba adequately without revealing the depth of the reductive, offensive and juvenile approach offered in the section written by Farrell and which claims to demonstrate the ways in which feminism discriminates against men. Simply put, how …

Always Passing, Alan Clinton Jan 2008

Always Passing, Alan Clinton

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The essay leading off this issue of Reconstruction, "History, Ethnicity and Religion and the Sudanese North-South Conflict," points out not only the slipperiness of race, but the fact that it is erased and reappears depending on various political contexts. Muslims in Northern Sudan, although claiming an ethnic identity, "are not Arab in a genetic sense." Rather, the goal was to pass as Arab in order to gain status (trade relationships, escape from slavery) with Muslims in the Arabian Peninsula. Yet, what may have begun for many as a pragmatic conversion has in turn passed into an identity claimed …

Consistently Controversial: Commentary Magazine, 1945 To The Present, Nathan Abrams

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

By studying the example of Commentary magazine today, we can learn much about how a magazine operates. It is instructive as a model for editorship, the relations between a sponsor and editor, and between the editor and his/her staff and contributors. It shows how a small but astutely run magazine can tap into the prevailing political, cultural and intellectual currents to become a major player in the international scene and speak to power. It demonstrates how large circulation figures are not necessary for a magazine's longevity or level of influence, as Commentary's figures have never been great (60,000 at …

Posthumanism Of The New Intermedia: The Cellphone Named Desire, Tomek Kitlinski, Joe Lockard, Stéphane Symons

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The mobile phone networks promise global communication, wholeness, plethora, safety, and romance. Instead, cellphones silence us. In a repressive pseudo-democracy, we are silenced.

Snyc, Freedomways, And The Influence Of The Popular Front In The South On The Black Arts Movement, James Smethurst Jan 2008

Snyc, Freedomways, And The Influence Of The Popular Front In The South On The Black Arts Movement, James Smethurst

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Tracing out cultural and political affiliations that persisted despite the effort of the repressive state apparatus, this essay examines the oft-neglected organizational and cultural connections between the Old Left and the new. Arguing that the work of Popular Front artists and activists in the South prefigured Black Arts literature and visual arts notions of how artists should relate to the community that marked, the paper recasts the continuities between the 1930s and 1960s.
