Understanding Distracted Minds: A Review Of Stolen Focus, Tammy J. Burnham Dr. Mar 2026

Understanding Distracted Minds: A Review Of Stolen Focus, Tammy J. Burnham Dr.

South Carolina Association for Middle Level Education Journal

This review examines Hari's Stolen Focus: Why You Can't Pay Attention—and How to Think Deeply Again, an exploration of society's lack of sustained attention in an increasingly digital world. Hari's investigation of technology's impact on cognitive abilities provides meaningful insights for those in the educational field, where educators must guide young people through social media environments. Hari argues that systemic forces are disabling attention spans, and he evaluates practical solutions for educators and parents. Stolen Focus is an important resource for educators committed to supporting students' cognitive development and mental well-being.

Feedback In Digital Game-Based Learning: A Taxonomy And The Design And Empirical Evaluation Of A Feedback System In A Mathematics Serious Game, André Almo Mar 2026

Feedback In Digital Game-Based Learning: A Taxonomy And The Design And Empirical Evaluation Of A Feedback System In A Mathematics Serious Game, André Almo

Dissertations

Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL) is an active, student-centred pedagogical approach in which feedback plays a central role by informing learners’ actions, guiding decision-making and shaping motivation and engagement. Despite its importance, feedback in serious games is often described inconsistently and insufficiently in research, limiting comparability across studies and the accumulation of design knowledge, particularly for children. This thesis addresses these gaps through two complementary contributions: the development of a taxonomy for feedback design in digital serious games and the empirical evaluation of a taxonomy-informed feedback system in a mathematics game for primary school students. First, this work introduces the Taxonomy …

In What Style Shall I Confront Them? The Role Of Social Relationships In Social Correction Of Misinformation Among The Uk And Arab Social Media Users, Muaadh Noman, Mohamed B. Almourad, Ala Yankouskaya, Firoj Alam, Raian Ali

All Works

This study investigates how social factors influence the likelihood of employing direct or indirect communication styles when correcting misinformation on social media in two different cultural contexts, the United Kingdom (UK) and the Arab Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. We conducted an online survey, supported by vignettes, that involved 686 participants, 367 from the UK and 319 from the Arab GCC countries. Participants were presented with a misinformation scenario and asked about their likelihood of using direct or indirect communication styles to correct their acquaintances. The survey captured variations in gender similarity (same vs. different gender), social status (lower vs. …

Speaking Merit: English Fluency, Class, And Perceived Ability In India, Arianna Steadman, Aakanksh Vaidya Mar 2026

Speaking Merit: English Fluency, Class, And Perceived Ability In India, Arianna Steadman, Aakanksh Vaidya

Research Papers and Posters from ASCL 60.20: Languages and Scripts of Gender, Class, and Nation

This paper explores how English fluency in India is often linked to perceptions of intelligence, competence and social status. Through four interviews with Dartmouth students from India and analysis of the films Hindi Medium and English Vinglish we found English can shape schooling access, confidence, respect, and opportunity, whilst also reflecting inequalities in class, privilege, and prior educational exposure. Our findings suggest that the high value placed on English can reinforce unfair social hierarchies by making unequal access appear like individual merit.

Learning Gendered Speech: How Media Exposure Shapes American Learners’ Perceptions Of Japanese Pronouns, Emma Bell, David Raymond Mar 2026

Learning Gendered Speech: How Media Exposure Shapes American Learners’ Perceptions Of Japanese Pronouns, Emma Bell, David Raymond

Research Papers and Posters from ASCL 60.20: Languages and Scripts of Gender, Class, and Nation

Language choices play an integral part in an individual’s identity, especially in how they are perceived by others. Further, the context under which an individual learns a language has a major influence on their language choices. This influence is particularly significant in Japanese: a language that is often described as having clearly defined “masculine” and “feminine” speech styles. The following research is a study on how beginner Japanese language learners’ pedagogical and environmental backgrounds affect their perception of gendered pronouns. An online survey was conducted to compare perceptions of the appropriateness of various pronouns across gendered contexts between beginner learners …

Native Chinese Speakers’ Perspective On Foreign Speakers Of Their Language, Veronika Šímová, Jack Inglis Mar 2026

Native Chinese Speakers’ Perspective On Foreign Speakers Of Their Language, Veronika Šímová, Jack Inglis

Research Papers and Posters from ASCL 60.20: Languages and Scripts of Gender, Class, and Nation

As previous research suggests, native speakers of Chinese may hold unfair perceptions of non-native learners of their language. This might lead to a belief among Chinese native speakers that non-Asians cannot speak Chinese fluently or at a native level. This is a potentially harmful assumption that has implications affecting new learners, experienced learners, and future learners. Existing research on the topic has shown that ethnically Chinese L2 speakers of Mandarin are often perceived more positively than non-Asian L2 speakers. Other scholars have shown the perceived relationships between looking Chinese and speaking Chinese, as well as assumptions that Asians should speak …

Same Film, Different Story: Cross-Cultural Adaptation Of Movie Titles In Thai And Cantonese Markets, Krittin Hirunchupong, Yi Gao Mar 2026

Same Film, Different Story: Cross-Cultural Adaptation Of Movie Titles In Thai And Cantonese Markets, Krittin Hirunchupong, Yi Gao

Research Papers and Posters from ASCL 60.20: Languages and Scripts of Gender, Class, and Nation

Movie title translations play a significant role in cross-cultural marketing and interpersonal communication among audiences. Due to cultural differences and naming conventions, English titles are often adapted creatively in Asian contexts for informative, aesthetic and commercial purposes. Diverse translation strategies share organic relations with Glocalization trends, indicating the degree of cultural openness in international discourse. This study combines media analysis that investigates translation strategy trends in top rated films in Thailand and Hong Kong with survey data on bilingual audiences’ interaction with title backtranslations. Both quantitative and qualitative data reflect that Thai and Cantonese film titles shape audience expectations and …

Countering Wahhabism And Promoting Religious Stability In Kazakhstan: Theological Insights From Qawam Ad-Din Al-Itqani, Rizabek Battaluly, Shamshadin Kerim, Nurlan Anarbayev, Ershat Vice-Rector Ongar

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Following Kazakhstan’s independence, the expansion of religious freedoms created a societal religious vacuum, which, coupled with the low level of religious literacy among youth, facilitated the spread of radical ideologies. Historical evidence indicates that Wahhabism entered the region through broader Salafi movements, doctrinally grounded in the teachings of Ibn Taymiyya, contributing notably to inter-religious tensions among younger generations. Traditional Islamic frameworks in Central Asia – the Hanafi school of jurisprudence and the Maturidi creed – have historically played a central role in maintaining religious stability. The scholarly works of Qawam ad-Din al-Itqani, a prominent intellectual from the Turkistan region, systematically …

Art Therapy In The Art Classroom, Sherry Williams Mar 2026

Art Therapy In The Art Classroom, Sherry Williams

Theses

The integration of art therapy practices within the art classroom provides a transformative framework for supporting the emotional and psychological well-being of students. Research into these strategies demonstrates that creative practices allow students to manage stress and anxiety while fostering mindfulness, reflection, and self-expression. Art educators can create safe and supportive environments by incorporating therapeutic activities such as drawing mandalas, doodling, and engaging in collaborative projects. These methods prioritize the creative process over technical achievement, allowing students to communicate complex feelings that may be difficult to articulate verbally.

While art teachers are not licensed therapists, they can effectively implement therapeutic …

Gateway Reader- Individual Papers

  • The Problem: The researcher addresses a gap in media criticism regarding Dana Terrace's animated series Knights of Guinevere, arguing that critics like Rosa Perez over-emphasize the show's jabs at Disney while neglecting its broader allegorical critiques of corporate pollution and capitalist labor practices.

  • The Method: The study analyzes the pilot episode of Knights of Guinevere by evaluating its framing, character design, and setting alongside a comparative critique of Rosa Perez's 2025 article "This Animated Sci-Fi Series Fires a Shot at Disney".

  • Quantitative Finding: The core text references specific timestamps from the 2025 pilot episode, including the introduction of narrative …

Beyond Precedent: Leveraging Non-Precedential Writings In Pursuit Of Social Justice Advocacy, Marissa C. Meredith Mar 2026

Beyond Precedent: Leveraging Non-Precedential Writings In Pursuit Of Social Justice Advocacy, Marissa C. Meredith

Marquette Benefits and Social Welfare Law Review

The role of law in society is complex and often intersects with evolving societal norms, politics, technology, etc. Despite this complexity, students, especially our current Gen-Z students, enroll in law school, hoping to enact positive change within their communities through the legal system. As noted by recent studies, law students' reasons for attending law school have shifted from a “desire to have a challenging and rewarding career” to a focus on “helping others or uplifting their communit[ies]” and addressing “social justice” issues. With this change in purpose, students' expectations about the education they will receive in law school have shifted, …

Our Eviction Court Clients Need This Treaty: The U.S. Must Finally Ratify The International Covenant On Economic, Social, And Cultural Rights, Fran Quigley Mar 2026

Our Eviction Court Clients Need This Treaty: The U.S. Must Finally Ratify The International Covenant On Economic, Social, And Cultural Rights, Fran Quigley

Marquette Benefits and Social Welfare Law Review

Anyone enduring poverty in the U.S. or working with persons enduring poverty–as we do in our law school eviction clinic–is aware that housing, healthcare, food, and sufficient income are essential to human survival and dignity. Yet those basic necessities are not rights guaranteed under U.S. law. Instead, discretionary, underfunded efforts to address economic needs have led to widespread U.S. poverty and a toxic one-step-forward/one-step-backward policy dance, characterized by safety net programs expanding only to be cut when political winds shift.

The U.S. should join nearly every other nation in the world by ratifying the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and …

The Urban Talented Tenth: Race, Higher Education, And The Law Of Opportunity, Walter A. Jean-Jacques Mar 2026

The Urban Talented Tenth: Race, Higher Education, And The Law Of Opportunity, Walter A. Jean-Jacques

Marquette Benefits and Social Welfare Law Review

This Article reexamines W.E.B. Du Bois’s theory of the “Talented Tenth” through the lens of contemporary African American males in urban educational contexts. Drawing on historical origins, critical race theory, and modern jurisprudence surrounding higher education, it argues that law and policy have systematically overlooked those who form what this Article terms the “Urban Talented Tenth.” These students, often lacking traditional markers of privilege, navigate structural inequities while achieving academic excellence. By situating their experiences against the backdrop of landmark Supreme Court cases such as Brown v. Board of Education, Regents of the University of California v. Bakke, Grutter v. …

Every Road You Take: Where Federal Doctrine Stalls, State Law Can Pick Up In The Fight Over Persistent Surveillance, David A. Lord Mar 2026

Every Road You Take: Where Federal Doctrine Stalls, State Law Can Pick Up In The Fight Over Persistent Surveillance, David A. Lord

Hofstra Law Review

In recent years, automated license plate reader (“ALPR”) systems have transformed criminal investigation by providing law enforcement with extensive information about suspects’ movements. Prosecutors have defended this practice as firmly grounded in the Supreme Court’s traditional Fourth Amendment jurisprudence. Privacy advocates have responded by arguing that certain Supreme Court cases dealing with new technology show an emerging interest in modifying those doctrines to enhance individual liberty. But to date, with a few isolated exceptions, both state and federal courts have declined to require law enforcement to obtain search warrants before using evidence from ALPRs. This Article explores ALPR evidence in …

Pornographic Deepfakes And Ugly Social Facts: The Costs Of A Normative Approach To Defamation, Kathleen Ross Mar 2026

Pornographic Deepfakes And Ugly Social Facts: The Costs Of A Normative Approach To Defamation, Kathleen Ross

Michigan Law Review

Around the world, women and girls are being victimized by pornographic deepfakes— alarmingly convincing, sexually exploitative images and videos generated using artificial intelligence (AI). Facing statutory gaps, victims may turn to traditional tort law claims to recover for the injuries inflicted by pornographic deepfakes. Defamation law, which protects against reputational injuries caused by false statements, is a particularly compelling arena for vindicating the interests invaded by a pornographic deepfake—interests which are, at their heart, social and reputational. Fortunately for deepfake victims, a pornographic deepfake will often satisfy defamation’s basic elements: A false and defamatory communication that concerns the victim and …

Organizational Characteristics And Business Transformation: An Investigation On Corporate Transformation In The Construction Industry, Wei Chen Mar 2026

Organizational Characteristics And Business Transformation: An Investigation On Corporate Transformation In The Construction Industry, Wei Chen

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Draw on a structural decline in demand triggered by selective real estate industrial policies, this study explores how construction companies drive business transformation through organizational characteristics in environmental uncertainties. Extant research has largely focused on the independent impact of single organizational factors or capabilities on transformation, lacking a systematic exploration of the interactions between organizational characteristics and the external environment. Take a typical construction group as an example, this study adopts a mixed-methods approach, through interviews and questionnaires, to systematically examine the impact of organizational characteristics on business transformation. The key findings are: in environmental uncertainties, an organic organizational structure …

The Role Of Negotiable And Non Negotiable Dimensions In Brand Revitalization: The Case Of Whisky Packaging Design, Liang Wang Mar 2026

The Role Of Negotiable And Non Negotiable Dimensions In Brand Revitalization: The Case Of Whisky Packaging Design, Liang Wang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In consumer sectors such as digital appliances, apparel, cosmetics, and food and beverages, the number of brands has grown explosively, intensifying market competition. As the primary touchpoint between brands and consumers, product packaging design directly shapes consumer attitudes. Adjustments to packaging elements can catalyze brand growth but may also trigger trust crises. Although recent studies have explored the role of packaging design in brand revitalization, research remains insufficient regarding its “negotiable” and “non-negotiable” dimensions and the mechanisms through which it influences consumer attitudes.

Drawing on brand life cycle theory, brand image theory, and consumer behavior theory, this dissertation investigates how …

Derebail, David L. Feldman, Gia J. Oh, John W. Sleasman, Kristina A. Bryant, Improving Vaccination In Ckd Working Group

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

People with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are particularly vulnerable to vaccine-preventable infections. Therefore, the National Kidney Foundation organized a multidisciplinary working group, including people with CKD and family care partners, to develop recommendations to improve vaccination rates, vaccination effectiveness, and health care for the CKD population. A modified Delphi process was used to achieve consensus on the recommendations. Recommendations on vaccination in CKD patients were organized into these categories: (1) patient preferences; (2) assessing the vaccination status of patients with CKD; (3) assessing vaccine response in patients with CKD; (4) vaccination of immunocompromised patients; (5) vaccination in posttransplant patients; (6) …
