Communication Strategies In Problem-Free Synchronous And Asynchronous Computer-Mediated Communication (Cmc): An Egyptian Efl University Context, Hanaa Abdel Rahman Sep 2008

Communication Strategies In Problem-Free Synchronous And Asynchronous Computer-Mediated Communication (Cmc): An Egyptian Efl University Context, Hanaa Abdel Rahman

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated four communication strategies in problem-free synchronous and asynchronous CMC interactions among 15 advanced Egyptian students in an EFL university context. The data yielded a statistically significant difference in the use of topic continuation and off-task discussion at higher levels than forward inferencing and hypothesis testing in synchronous CMC. Differences among some groups were also observed showing variation in communication strategy use. The results failed to support similar findings in asynchronous CMC. However, the data implied several considerations closely related to low interactivity in asynchronous CMC. The findings suggest that some communication strategies may lend themselves to a …

Conceptualizing From The Inside: Advantages, Complications, And Demands On Insider Positionality, Christina Chavez Sep 2008

Conceptualizing From The Inside: Advantages, Complications, And Demands On Insider Positionality, Christina Chavez

The Qualitative Report

The debate on insider/outsider positionality has raised issues about the methodological advantages and liabilities between the two, yet no clear account exists for what insider scholars can expect when they enter the field. First, I conceptualize how insider positionality can dually benefit and disadvantage the insider. Using a partial review of insider studies, including my study of my multigenerational Mexican American family, I also present a practical discussion on specific insider advantages and complications. In conclusion, I present a new approach to training novice insider scholars that will help them mediate between insider perspective and researcher position, an approach that …

Towards A History Of Intertextuality In Literary And Culture Studies, Marko Juvan Sep 2008

Towards A History Of Intertextuality In Literary And Culture Studies, Marko Juvan

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper "Towards a History of Intertextuality in Literary and Culture Studies" Marko Juvan argues that the theory of intertextuality reshaped fundamentally the understanding of influence in literature. It showed that supposedly primary sources are themselves but intertextual transformations dependent on cultural "encyclopedia." Intertextuality as a framework offers a refined terminology of forms and functions of both domestic and foreign literatures' creative reception while respecting specific linguistic and cultural spaces, traditions, and literary systems. It deconstructed the postulates of influence; for example, the concepts of author, the logic of cause and effect, and boundaries between texts. It revealed the …

Patriarchy In Post-1989 Poland And Tokarczuk's Dom Dzienny, Dom Nocny (The Day House, The Night House), Justyna Sempruch

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper "Patriarchy in Post-1989 Poland and Tokarczuk's Dom Dzienny, Dom Nocny (The Day House, the Night House)" Justyna Sempruch analyzes Tokarczuk's 1998 narrative in the context of the post-communist revival of patriarchy in Poland as well as the parallel Western feminist impact on women's writing in Poland. These two distinct socio-cultural developments, as reflected in Tokarczuk's novel, expand the concept of a subversive household into a transnational dis/order that abolishes borders between domestic (national) and foreign structures: an increasing masculinization of the power structures (political arena and "scientific" practices) impacts the management of the social and the most …

Chinese Ethnicities And Their Culture: An Overview, Haiwang Yuan Aug 2008

Chinese Ethnicities And Their Culture: An Overview, Haiwang Yuan

DLPS Faculty Publications

China, the most populous country in the world, is also a nation of great diversity. In addition to the majority population of Han Chinese, there are some 55 officially recognized national minorities--including Tibetan, Mongol, Manchu, Zhuang, Dai, and Gaoshan. The folklore of these minorities is often obscure and difficult to find in the English-speaking world, as is information about the people, their cultural histories, and their traditional customs. This book fills a gap by offering more than 50 representative folktales from China's minorities, as well as background information on each of the ethnic groups.

Classification Of Hand Held Shapes And Locations In Continuous Signing, Swetha Karri Aug 2008

Classification Of Hand Held Shapes And Locations In Continuous Signing, Swetha Karri

Theses

Sign language for the deaf and hearing impaired replaces speech with manually produced signs. Each sign has been categorized as being combinations of handshape, movement, orientation, location, and facial expressions. Of the five sign parameters, this thesis focuses on classification of two of the main parameters, the hand shapes and locations, in continuous signing.

Since the nature of hand shapes is transient and not static, neural networks was used as a classifier for hand shapes. And since locations in sign language are defined by linguistic variables rather than by hard core position values, fuzzy logic was used as a classifier …

Liberal Arts 2.0, Bridget B. Baird Aug 2008

Liberal Arts 2.0, Bridget B. Baird

Convocation Addresses

The title, Liberal Arts 2.0., "stems from the term Web 2.0, which refers to the recent evolution of the Web as interactive, participatory, collaborative and collective. Web 2.0 includes blogs, wikis, user-generated media, social networking: like much of what it describes, the definition is amorphous and inexact." Baird believes that Web 2.0 and all that it implies will necessitate a revision of the way we do liberal arts and thus the title “Liberal Arts 2.0.”

Her premise: that a liberal arts college is a place where teaching and research are improved by digital tools, where students are taught to negotiate …

Interoperability Measurement, Thomas C. Ford Aug 2008

Interoperability Measurement, Thomas C. Ford

Theses and Dissertations

This research presents an inaugural general method of measuring the collaborative and confrontational interoperability of a heterogeneous set of systems in the context of an operational process. The method is holistic, fundamental, flexible, and mathematical in nature and accommodates all types of systems and interoperations. The method relates the interoperability measurement to measures of operational effectiveness for confrontational operational processes. Extant leveling methods of describing interoperability are shown to be a special case of the more general method given in this research and the general interoperability measurement method is demonstrated through the presentation of coalition interoperability, suppression of enemy air …

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

We present a system which applies text mining using computational linguistic techniques to automatically extract, categorize, disambiguate and filter metadata for image access. Candidate subject terms are identified through standard approaches; novel semantic categorization using machine learning and disambiguation using both WordNet and a domain specific thesaurus are applied. The resulting metadata can be manually edited by image catalogers or filtered by semi-automatic rules. We describe the implementation of this workbench created for, and evaluated by, image catalogers. We discuss the system's current functionality, developed under the Computational Linguistics for Metadata Building (CLiMB) research project. The CLiMB Toolkit has been …

How General Education And Special Education Teachers Perceive The Behaviors Of African American Students In Their Classrooms Within A Suburban School Setting, Claudia Powers

Theses and Graduate Projects

This study was to explore the perceptions of general education and special education teachers and their perceptions of behaviors in their classrooms. A qualitative design using structured interview and observation was used to collect the data in the winter and spring of 2007. A sample of twelve teachers consisting of six general education and six special education teachers were recruited from Irondale High School in New Brighton, MN. Data collection and analysis were concurrent. Three themes emerged from the collected data. The themes regarding how the teachers perceived behaviors in their classes are teacher-student relationship, student's dress and the jargon …

What Is Culture? What Is Compentency? What Is Latino? : An Exploratory Study Of Clinicians' Perceptions And Practice Of Cultural Competency With Latino Clients, Saralyn Marie Masselink Aug 2008

What Is Culture? What Is Compentency? What Is Latino? : An Exploratory Study Of Clinicians' Perceptions And Practice Of Cultural Competency With Latino Clients, Saralyn Marie Masselink

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The objective of this study was to explore how clinicians conceptualize and practice cultural competency with Latino clients. This study is qualitative and exploratory in design, and based on in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 12 licensed clinicians in the Los Angeles area; experience in the field while licensed ranged from 1.5 years to 27 years. The study also investigated how clinicians perceived their own cultural identities influencing clinical work, and the relationship between culturally-specific knowledge and cultural competency. The literature review outlines a social constructionist concept of culture as appropriate for culturally competent practice, and investigates the usefulness of traditional concepts …

Embodied Practice : Do Social Work Therapists Explore Client Strengths As Expressed In The Lived Experience Of The Body?, Duncan Nichols Aug 2008

Embodied Practice : Do Social Work Therapists Explore Client Strengths As Expressed In The Lived Experience Of The Body?, Duncan Nichols

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was undertaken to explore how seven social work therapists attend to client strengths, with an emphasis on embodied experience and embodied strengths where competency and resourcefulness are experienced. Besides asking questions about the obvious markers of a person's physical experience (hobbies, work, etc.), questions about the psychoanalytic concept of body-self and attributes of certain popularized mind/body approaches or techniques social work therapists may use were also posed. Workers, whose practices are in community mental health, inpatient psychiatry, medical and private practice settings, provided experience-near narrative data. Major findings were workers' belief in the clinical value of using a …

Investigation Of The Inter-Correlations Among Standardized Written And Performance-Based Assessments Of Measurement Content Knowledge Among Third Grade English Language Learners, Marcella D. Elliott Aug 2008

Investigation Of The Inter-Correlations Among Standardized Written And Performance-Based Assessments Of Measurement Content Knowledge Among Third Grade English Language Learners, Marcella D. Elliott

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to provide an empirical test of the widely held belief that performance-based assessment provides a fairer picture of English-language learners' mathematical skills and knowledge than does a standardized assessment. Specifically, I compared the performance of 94 third-graders on the measurement subscale of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) mathematics test to their performance on a set of measurement reasoning and applications that was drawn from their third-grade hands-on science curriculum. Then, I present examples within the non-standardized testing setting where students were provided with real-time language-based accommodations as recommended by the research literature. Finally, …
