Ethnobotanical Observation On Tuberous Plants From Tribal Area Of Rajasthan (India), Shweta Swarnkar, S. S. Katewa

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The present paper gives an account of 42 tuberous plants of Ethnobotanical interest from Aravalli hills of Rajasthan. Main tribes inhabiting the study area are Bhil, Meena, Garasia, Damor and Kathodi. These tribes use the tuberous plants for various purposes in their daily life. Health, vitality and longevity enjoyed by the tribals have been attributed by them to these wild tuberous plants. On account of environmental changes and lack of insight of conservation of tuberous plants, many of them have become rare, threatened and endangered. If proper attention is not given, extinction of these plant species is certain and this …

Collecting Open Source Intelligence Via Tailored Information Delivery Systems, William Sousan, Qiuming Zhu, Ryan Nickell, William Mahoney, Peter Hospodka

Computer Science Faculty Publications

The Internet offers a plethora of freely available information for possible use in Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) operations. However, along with this information come challenges in finding relevant information and overcoming information overload. This paper presents the results of an ongoing research in a Tailored Information Delivery Services (TIDS) system that aids users in retrieving relevant information through various open intelligence sources. The TIDS provides a semantics-based query constructor that operates in a “What You Get is What You Need (WYGIWYNTM)” fashion and builds ontology based information tagging, theme extractor, and contextual model.

The Matrix Reconsidered: Thinking Through Binary Logic In Science Fiction And Social Reality, David J. Gunkel Sep 2008

The Matrix Reconsidered: Thinking Through Binary Logic In Science Fiction And Social Reality, David J. Gunkel

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

This article employs the conceptual opposition of the red and blue pill that is presented in The Matrix trilogy as a mechanism for investigating the philosophical antagonisms and structural conflicts commonly associated with the ‘information society’. The text is divided into two main parts: The first reconsiders the logical structure of this pharmacological dialectic, arguing that the choice between these two alternatives originates in the history of western thought and demonstrating how this binary arrangement organizes not just science fiction narratives but our understanding of social reality. The second part reconsiders the choice of the red pill. It critiques the …

Service, Ethnography, And The “Leap Of Faith”: A Spiritan Catholic Perspective On Service Learning, Kathleen Glenister Roberts Sep 2008

Service, Ethnography, And The “Leap Of Faith”: A Spiritan Catholic Perspective On Service Learning, Kathleen Glenister Roberts

Journal of Catholic Education

This article considers the state of service and experiential learning initiatives in higher education, especially in Catholic universities. Concluding that the Catholic mission of service, education, moral values, world concerns, and ecumenism can be integrated into student experience, the essay offers a model of service ethnography. Service ethnography is a research method wherein ethnographers undertake service with the intercultural community as a central component of their learning. The model is explored via a case study, demonstrating the experiences of students at a Catholic university and uses their reflections to describe a new vision of ethnography as a “leap of faith.”

Viewing And Visual Representation In The Physical Education Classroom, Craig Heynen Sep 2008

Viewing And Visual Representation In The Physical Education Classroom, Craig Heynen

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

Visual representation and viewing are integral parts of language arts, communication, and physical education. Time constraints often limit a self-contained classroom teacher, or even the language arts teacher's ability to adequately address all areas of language arts. Therefore, it is important to include language arts in other content areas. Visual representation and viewing can be effectively integrated into physical education, and can enhance the physical education learning experience as a result. In this article, the author discusses several strategies to integrate viewing and visual representation in a physical education classroom.

Transnational Book Markets And Literary Reception In The Americas, Molly Metherd Sep 2008

Transnational Book Markets And Literary Reception In The Americas, Molly Metherd

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper "Transnational Book Markets and Literary Reception in the Americas," Molly Metherd argues that the most diffuse products of transnational cultural production in the Americas come from mass media productions packaged for transnational audiences -- i.e., Hollywood films, television shows, popular magazines, product advertisements -- and that tend to homogenize messages, promote stereotypes, and simplify complex issues. However, another effort to make sense of shifting relationships in the Americas is coming from a group of US-American and Spanish American literary figures. In their fiction, criticism, journalistic work, and public statements, such authors have been responding to the covalence …

The Effect Of Explicit Instruction And Input Flood On Students' Use Ofspanish Discourse Markers On A Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview, Todd A. Hernandez Sep 2008

The Effect Of Explicit Instruction And Input Flood On Students' Use Ofspanish Discourse Markers On A Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview, Todd A. Hernandez

Spanish Languages and Literatures Research and Publications

This study investigates the effect of explicit instruction and input flood on students' use of Spanish discourse markers on a simulated oral proficiency interview. Students in the experimental group (n = 10) were provided with explicit instruction on the function and use of discourse markers to narrate an event in the past time frame. This group also received a flood of input that contained an increased incidence of discourse markers. Students were then presented with opportunities for communicative practice and corrective feedback. In contrast, students in the control group (n = 9) did not receive explicit instruction on the use …

A Healing Echo: Methodological Reflections Of A Working-Class Researcher On Class, Allison L. Hurst Sep 2008

A Healing Echo: Methodological Reflections Of A Working-Class Researcher On Class, Allison L. Hurst

The Qualitative Report

College students from the working cl ass have interesting stories to tell about the meaning and operation of mobility through education. The author, herself a “working-class academic,” explores some of the issues and dilemmas of uncovering and presenting these stories. Specifically, the author addresses: (1) the effects of interviewing those similar to one’s self; (2) the possibility of losing voice when interviewing too many participants; (3) the responsibility of the researcher to take seriously the importance of renaming interview participants to ensure both anonymity and integrity; (4) the question of audience; and (5) the issue of reliability.

The False Witness: Artistic Research On Stage, Orit Simhoni Sep 2008

The False Witness: Artistic Research On Stage, Orit Simhoni

The Qualitative Report

Sharing research findings with others is a fundamental concern of researchers. Qualitative research results may be disseminated in conventional (e.g., scholarly text or presentation) or innovative (e.g., art, drama, or poetry) forms. Given that researchers should select the best form of presentation of their work, it is worthwhile to explore creative options. One such option is theatrical performance. The purpose of this study is to describe one playwright’s experience in creating a research- based drama, The False Witness. While focusing on the process of research-based drama, this article is intended to inform researchers and artists about the potential of a …

The Grammar Of Catholic Schooling And Radically "Catholic" Schools, Martin Scanlan Sep 2008

The Grammar Of Catholic Schooling And Radically "Catholic" Schools, Martin Scanlan

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

A "grammar of Catholic schooling" inhibits many elementary and secondary Catholic schools from reflecting on how they practice Catholic Social Teaching (CST). The values of human dignity, the common good, and a preferential option for the marginalized are central to CST. Schools can live these values by serving children who live in poverty, are racial, ethnic, and linguistic minorities, or have disabilities. This article demonstrates how a grammar of Catholic schooling has allowed Catholic schools to fall into recruitment and retention patterns antithetical to CST. Drawing upon a multicase, qualitative study of three urban Catholic elementary schools serving marginalized students, …
