Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether children's attitudes toward reading and their perceptions of themselves as readers impacted their academic achievement. Additionally, the study investigated the effect oftime spent reading and reading practice on student achievement. Finally, the research examined whether reading attitudes and reading practice were moderated by gender or ethnicity. Participants included 63 third-grade students in a Title I Elementary School. Students were administered a questionnaire to collect evidence of their reading preferences and their reading practices. In addition, students kept reading logs as a measure of what they read and how often they read. …

La Satire Comme Critique Sociale Chez Balzac, Galina Paramonova Jan 2008

La Satire Comme Critique Sociale Chez Balzac, Galina Paramonova

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

As one of the founders of the realist novel, Balzac is praised for having invented returning characters and interwoven chronologies that serve to challenge the decadent social mores of his time, but critical discussions of Balzacs's work continue to neglect his use of satire in social criticism. Different modes of satire occure in his LePere Goriot (1835), Le Bat de Sceaux (1829), Gobseck (1830), La Maison Nucingen (1837), Le Depute dArcis (1847), and La Femme abandonnee (1822), which together attest that Balzac achieves his ambition to become both the Rabelais and the Moliere of his era.

La Transformacion De Ia Bruja En Las Obras De Maria De Zayas, Elizabeth Marie Petersen Jan 2008

La Transformacion De Ia Bruja En Las Obras De Maria De Zayas, Elizabeth Marie Petersen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

In my thesis, I argue that the 1 ih -century Spanish writer, Maria de Zayas y Sotomayor, in a unique form of 'mimesis,' uses elements of magic to transform the popular concept of the Spanish witch. Drawing on theories from Jacques Lacan's mirror phase, Homi Bhabha and Barbara Fuchs's notion of mimesis, and Judith Butler's idea of gender performitivity, I demonstrate how Zayas frees the witch from the subjugated language constructed by the Catholic Church and society of her time. I examine six of the short stories in her two novels to show how the author alters the role of …

Miradas Transatlanticas Del Rebelde: Una Reinterpretacion De Lope De Aguirre A Traves De Las Cronicas Y De Ia Novela Del Exilio De Ramon J. Sender, Espiga Enrique Tellez Jan 2008

Miradas Transatlanticas Del Rebelde: Una Reinterpretacion De Lope De Aguirre A Traves De Las Cronicas Y De Ia Novela Del Exilio De Ramon J. Sender, Espiga Enrique Tellez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The chroniclers who accompanied Lope de Aguirre on his expedition to find "EI Dorado," accuse him of being a "crazy" tyrant, responsible for the rebellion to emancipate the conquerors from the Spanish crown. Aguirre was made a scapegoat, in Girard ian terms, not only for that reason but due to his critique of what Angel Rama defined as the "Lettered City," a rebuke voiced in the infamous letter he wrote to the Spanish king denouncing imperial institutions in the Americas. 20th century, Spanish writer Ramon J. Sender's novel, La aventura equinoccial de Lope de Aguirre (1964), reverses the historical discourse …

Age Of William A. Dunning, Kathleen P. Barsalou Jan 2008

Age Of William A. Dunning, Kathleen P. Barsalou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Stripped of the intent of its author, L. Frank Baum, the children's fairy tale The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was left to be understood only within a changing cultural construct. Historian Hayden White, arguing that the similarities between a novel and a work of history were more significant than their differences, insisted that history was preeminently a subsection of literature. According to White, historical narratives were manifestly verbal fictions, and the only acceptable grounds upon which the historian should choose his historical perspective were the moral and the aesthetic. White conflated historical consciousness with myth and blurred the boundary that …

An Alternative Enlightenment: The Moral Philosophy Of Jeanne Marie Le Prince De Beaumont (1711-1780), Margaret P. Schaller Jan 2008

An Alternative Enlightenment: The Moral Philosophy Of Jeanne Marie Le Prince De Beaumont (1711-1780), Margaret P. Schaller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The ceuvre of Jeanne Marie Le Prince de Beaumont, the public intellectual whose pedagogical journals and epistolary novels were routinely shelved in private eighteenthcentury libraries alongside the works of the period's most famous philosophes, today remains virtually unknown. Beyond the scant available studies limited to her pedagogy and fairy tales, it is time to explore the theoretical aspects of those and other of her texts as significant alternatives to traditional Enlightenment discourse as epitomized in the contemporary philosophes. Through her personal roles of governess to British and French aristocracy, editor of a French-language periodical featuring such contributors as Voltaire and …

Atrave(S) And Fronte(I)Ras, De Mello Clarisse Bandeira Jan 2008

Atrave(S) And Fronte(I)Ras, De Mello Clarisse Bandeira

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The translation of Geny Vilas-Novas' novel Adeus, Rio Doce emphasizes the importance of promoting a literary exchange between Brazil and the Spanish-speaking world. This study analyses contemporary Brazilian literature and situates the author in the post-modern literary movement, stressing two post-colonial fundamental themes: emigration and feminine literature. Millions of undocumented emigrants from Latin America live nowadays in the United States displaced in the American society and leave suffering family members abandoned in their native countries. One of the roles of Latin- American women writers like Vilas-Novas is to reveal and denounce the subaltern conditions of this emigration movement in the …

Beyond Fidelity, Steven M. Urdegar Jan 2008

Beyond Fidelity, Steven M. Urdegar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study explored how contextual factors influenced the effect of educational practices on student reading achievement and describes an alternative means of assessing educational programs under conditions of multiple-treatment interference and innovation diffusion. Over 1,500 reading teachers at 69 elementary schools within a large diverse district completed surveys regarding multiple aspects of the reading program, actions of their reading leaders, and instructional program coherence at their schools. Nearly 13,000 students in grades 2 through 5 were assigned to those teachers. Factor analyses were used to separately identify patterns within survey items that measured educational practices, leadership actions, and instructional program …

Garbage Pails And Puppy Dog Tails: Is That What Katz Is Made Of?, Aya Gruber Jan 2008

Garbage Pails And Puppy Dog Tails: Is That What Katz Is Made Of?, Aya Gruber

Publications

This Article takes the opportunity of the fortieth anniversary of Katz v. U.S. to assess whether the revolutionary case's potential to provide broad and flexible privacy protection to individuals has been realized. Answering this question in a circumspect way, the Article pinpoints the language in Katz that was its eventual undoing and demonstrates how the Katz test has been plagued by two principle problems that have often rendered it more harmful to than protective of privacy. The manipulation problem describes the tendency of conservative courts to define reasonable expectations of privacy as lower than the expectations society actually entertains. The …

The Measure Of Government Speech: Identifying Expression's Source, Helen Norton Jan 2008

The Measure Of Government Speech: Identifying Expression's Source, Helen Norton

Publications

States and other governmental bodies increasingly invoke the government speech defense to First Amendment challenges by private parties who seek to alter or join what the government contends is its own expression. These disputes involve competing claims to the same speech: a private party maintains that a certain means of expression reflects (or should be allowed to reflect) her own views, while a public entity claims that same speech as its own, along with the ability to control its content.

In suggesting a framework for approaching these problems, this Article starts by examining the theoretical and practical justifications for insulating …

THE EFFECTS OF PROGRAM MODEL AND LANGUAGE ON SCIENCE TAKS SCORES AMONG FIFTH GRADERS

This study examined the conditions of learning allowing students in one classroom to succeed on the fifth grade science TAKS test whereas students in other classrooms on the same campus do not succeed. It focused on the relationship of program models, specifically as it pertains to the influence of language within the content area of science and student performance on the fifth grade science TAKS scores.

To compare the academic achievement, as measured by the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test, in grade five …

The Use And Interpretation Of The Batería Iii With U.S. Bilinguals, Julie Esparza Brown Jan 2008

The Use And Interpretation Of The Batería Iii With U.S. Bilinguals, Julie Esparza Brown

Dissertations and Theses

Within each classroom, many children excel academically while others struggle. Some students' difficulties are such that they require placement into educational programs different from grade level core and perhaps delivered outside of general education classrooms. For many, special education programs are the lifeline to reach their innate potential. For others misplaced into special education, their opportunities may be truncated. For the past 40 years (Dunn, 1968), disproportionate representation of minority children in some disability categories has been a problem. Educators commonly ask "Is a child's difficulties due to language differences or a learning disability?" One key area of confusion relates …

The Corporate Social Responsibility Movement As An Ethnographic Problem, John M. Conley, Cynthia A. Williams Jan 2008

The Corporate Social Responsibility Movement As An Ethnographic Problem, John M. Conley, Cynthia A. Williams

All Papers

Over the past decade, the business world has devoted an extraordinary amount of attention to the concept of "corporate social responsibility." CSR derives from the idea that the responsibility of a corporation extends beyond the traditional Anglo-American objective of providing maximal financial returns to its shareholders. Instead, CSR proponents have argued, the legitimate concerns of a corporation should include such broader objectives as sustainable growth, equitable employment practices, and long-term social and environmental well-being. CSR is now the focus of a well-defined and energetic movement that has manifested itself in a variety of ways. It is, in the anthropologist Sally …

Social And Cultural Diversity In Distance Education, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena, Deborah Lapointe Jan 2008

Social And Cultural Diversity In Distance Education, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena, Deborah Lapointe

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

With the expansion of global telecommunication networks and the worldwide demand for higher education, distance education has the potential to reach out internationally to enhance learning for diverse learners and increase intercultural awareness and communication. By definition, distance education is borderless (Latchem, 2005), although differences in sociocultural contexts, values and expectations of diverse educational systems and learners may prove to be its greatest challenge (Hanna, 2000). While distance education programs proclaim an international focus with international content and learners, instructional design and methods frequently carry Eurocentric Western bias. Distance educators need to be sensitive to social, cultural and educational differences, …
