A Review Of Assistive Technology And Writing Skills For Students With Physical And Educational Disabilities, Howard P. Parette, Jack J. Hourcade, George R. Peterson-Karlan

Faculty Publications - College of Education

In recent years effective instruction in reading for learners with physical
and educational disabilities has received great attention in the schools.
However, instruction in the corollary skill of writing has received considerably less emphasis. This review paper notes that through the use of assistive technology, students with a variety of physical and educational
disabilities can learn to effectively (a) plan and organize their writing,
(b) draft and transcribe their work, and (c) edit and revise their narrative
and expository writing.
With teachers increasingly being held accountable for the development of
literacy skills in all students, including those students with physical …

Beyond The Debate: Exploring The Underlying Values And Assumptions Of Biodiversity Conservation In Protected Areas, Leon-Charl Malan Jan 2008

Beyond The Debate: Exploring The Underlying Values And Assumptions Of Biodiversity Conservation In Protected Areas, Leon-Charl Malan

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This dissertation examines the current disagreement among scientists and scholars about best practices for biodiversity conservation in protected areas. There is no clear consensus among the scientific community about the most effective approach to conserve biodiversity and several conflicting positions form part of an ongoing debate in the field. Most disagreements and conflicts are based on differences in the underlying values and assumptions of the parties involved in the conflict. The more we know and understand those underlying values, the more constructive the dialog, and the more likely acceptable policy decisions will be developed. This study, presented in three parts, …

Poetic Leadership, A Territory Of Aesthetic Consciousness And Change, R. Amrit Kasten-Daryanani Jan 2008

Poetic Leadership, A Territory Of Aesthetic Consciousness And Change, R. Amrit Kasten-Daryanani

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Poetic leadership is a new theoretical construct that views leadership as an activity that unites a lyrical intellect with keenly felt emotion for the purpose of producing changes in the consciousness of self and others. This change begins within the interiority of self, moving surely to broader realms of one's surroundings and society, provoking movement that impacts the developing potential of the individual and the cultural milieu in which they exist. Emotion is the primary trace into consciousness used in this dissertation, which serves to unite experiences of the heart with experiences of the mind. The unification of these disparate …

The Seeker’S Journey, John Izzo, Larry C. Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

What may be needed, and perhaps now it is a possibility, is a new initiative from some seekers in which they take responsibility for finding and responding to the contemporary prophet who will help them find their ways out of their individual and collective wildernesses so that they will become more effective servants of society. . . . How would Seekers Anonymous do for a name? .. . For those who participate, healing, the sense ofbeing made whole will come from deep involvement with creative work on the structural flaws in our society, work that has both ameliorative and society …

A Kenyan On Servant-Leadership: Harambee And Service, Jeremiah Ole Koshal, Kathleen Patterson Jan 2008

A Kenyan On Servant-Leadership: Harambee And Service, Jeremiah Ole Koshal, Kathleen Patterson

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Robert K. Greenleaf (1977) offers a foundational understanding of servant-leadership with this statement: The servant-leader is servant first. .. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve first. . . Then, conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead... The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other people's highest-priority needs are being served. The best test, and the most difficult to administer, is: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, and more likely themselves to become servants? And what …

Mobilizing Movements, Mobilizing Contemporary Islamic Resistance, Rachael M. Rudolph Jan 2008

Mobilizing Movements, Mobilizing Contemporary Islamic Resistance, Rachael M. Rudolph

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Recent world events, ranging from international violence to elections, have propelled academics and policymakers to examine Islamic resistance movements more closely. Previous studies of such movements, in both the English and Arabic literature, has been limited to historical case studies. The lack of systematic cross-case comparisons has limited the development of generalizable propositions regarding movement mobilization. In a first effort to remedy this gap in the literature, this study examines the mobilization of Islamic resistance movements---the FIS, the PIJ, Hamas, the MNLF, the MILF and the ASG---in three different countries located in three different regions. Mobilization was examined utilizing the …

Queen Elizabeth I And Shakespeare: Image Of Gender, Power, And Sexuality, Frederick Schweizer Jan 2008

Queen Elizabeth I And Shakespeare: Image Of Gender, Power, And Sexuality, Frederick Schweizer

Open Access Dissertations

Queen Elizabeth I's writing is contextually significant; it represents not only Elizabeth's thoughts, wishes and commands, but also Elizabeth herself. During a reign in which she struggles with issues of sexuality and power as a female ruler, her manipulation of language to create an identity and assert power becomes the way in which Elizabeth constructs and re-defines herself. She challenges Renaissance gender expectations through the power of language and expands definitions and/or identities of women in terms of sexuality, marriage, religion, and politics. She adapts male discourse as her own and manipulates language to fit specific audiences, but she must …

The Effect Of Classroom Lighting On The Volume Of Classroom Sounds., Chad A. Skolny

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The present study determined the effect of classroom lighting on the volume of classroom sounds. The expected outcome was that reduced lighting would result in reduced volume of all sounds made by students during instruction. A third-grade class of 19 students served as the participants in the study. With mean and level making substantial changes between phases while variability and trend remained consistent, along with strong agreement among observers, the results demonstrated a decrease in volume of all sounds made by students when instruction occurred with dimmed lighting. The more teachers understand about the relationship between lighting and student performance, …

First And Second Language Tongue Movements In Spanish And Korean Bilingual Speakers, Christopher Dromey, Shawn L. Nissen, Cynthia Wheeler Jan 2008

First And Second Language Tongue Movements In Spanish And Korean Bilingual Speakers, Christopher Dromey, Shawn L. Nissen, Cynthia Wheeler

Faculty Publications

A number of previous studies have relied on perceptual judgments or acoustic analysis to examine second language (L2) production. However, few researchers have studied L2 performance by directly tracking the physical movements of the articulators. The purpose of the present study was to investigate intraspeaker differences in native (Korean or Spanish) and L2 (English) production through kinematic indices of tongue activity. This involved measurement of the speed, duration, and distance of tongue movements or strokes during speech. Findings indicated that the speakers had significantly slower stroke speeds and longer movement durations for L2 when compared to their native language (L1), …

The Effects Of Divided Attention On Speech Motor, Verbal Fluency, And Manual Task Performance, Christopher Dromey, Erin Shim Jan 2008

The Effects Of Divided Attention On Speech Motor, Verbal Fluency, And Manual Task Performance, Christopher Dromey, Erin Shim

Faculty Publications

Purpose: The goal of this study was to evaluate aspects of the functional distance hypothesis, which predicts that tasks regulated by brain networks in closer anatomic proximity will interfere more with each other than tasks controlled by spatially distant regions. Speech, verbal fluency, and manual motor tasks were examined to ascertain whether right-handed activity would interfere more with speech and language performance, because of the presumed greater demands on the left hemisphere.

Method: Twenty young adults completed a speech task (repeating a sentence), a verbal fluency task (listing words beginning with the same letter), and right- and left-handed motor tasks …

Other Hispanic An Analysis Of Nyc Honduran Political Participation., Maximo Geraldo Martinez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Studies conducted on Latino immigrants and political participation primarily focuses on their large population groups such as Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Mexicans. However, this study centers on Central American Hondurans, also a group with substantial populations in U.S. cities. The theoretical idea central in examining this query is that U.S. Honduran political participation is related to their ethnic identity, association with churches in their U.S. communities, the extent of financial ties, and political participation (experiences) in their country of origin. This study will also add to the understanding of differences evident in U.S. Latino political participation. Uncovering differences of this …

The Blessing Of Departure: Acceptable And Unacceptable State Support For Demographic Transformation: The Lieberman Plan To Exchange Populated Territories In Cisjordan, Timothy W. Waters

Articles by Maurer Faculty

What limits ought there be on a state's ability to create a homogeneous society, to increase or perpetuate non-diversity, or to create hierarchies within existing diversity? This paper examines those questions with reference to the Lieberman Plan - which proposes to transfer populated territories from Israel to the Palestine in exchange for Jewish settlements on the West Bank - as an abstract exercise in demographic transformation by the state.

First the article considers if the Lieberman plan would "work": Would it create the alterations it proposes, and would those changes achieve a stable, peaceful, even just settlement? It finds that …

Control Of Nitrogen Oxide And Pm Emissions From Scr-Equipped 2010 Compliant Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Over Different Engine-Out Calibrations., Raffaello Ardanese

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Diesel engines constitute a valuable solution to the growing demand for higher fuel efficiencies, especially in relation to the rapid growth of fuel prices in recent years. However, the substantially lean conditions typical of diesel exhaust pose a serious challenge to the traditional exhaust aftertreatment devices. The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology has proven to be a viable technology for reducing emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from heavy-duty diesel engines. The diesel particulate filter (DPF) significantly reduces particulate matter (PM); primarily, the solid carbon component of total PM. However, the absence of carbon, downstream of the DPF introduces new …

Rhetorics Of Pain And Desire: The Writings Of The Middle English Mystics., Marisa A. Klages

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation, Rhetorics of Pain and Desire: The Writings of the Middle English Mystics, seeks to explore the connections between desire and pain in the writings of Richard Rolle, Julian of Norwich, Margery Kempe and Walter Hilton. All four writers develop a rhetoric that allows them to use pain and/or desire as a catalyst through which their writing becomes embodied. This embodied rhetoric serves the purpose of achieving union with God, while instructing others in the art of fusing the body, pain and desire into the ultimate conduit for divine contemplation. In each chapter, the development of each writer's authority …

The Heroides In Alfonso X'S General Estoria: Translation, Adaptation, Use, And Interpretation Of A Classical Work In A Thirteenth-Century Iberian History Of The World, J. Javier Puerto Benito

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

My dissertation analyzes the role of Ovid’s Heroides in Alfonso X’s General Estoria, a massive historical compilation in six volumes that the “Learned King” commissioned in 1272. The way in which eleven of these fictional epistles were incorporated by the Alfonsine translators sheds light on how ancient texts were perceived by medieval scholars. According to the study, King Alfonso relies on Ovid as an accurate historical source and uses the epistles of the heroines as historical documents while preserving their literary dimension.

The thesis is divided into six sections. Chapter one introduces the topic of translation in relation to …
