The Impact Of A Home-Based Intervention Program On Maternal Reflective Functioning In First-Time Mothers, Maia Rebecca Miller Jan 2008

The Impact Of A Home-Based Intervention Program On Maternal Reflective Functioning In First-Time Mothers, Maia Rebecca Miller

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The present study investigates the impact of "Minding the Baby," a home-based intervention program, on maternal reflective functioning (RF). It was hypothesized that the reflective capacity of mothers who received the MTB intervention would increase over the course of the study, and that this increase would be reflected in the quality of their responses to clinical interviews administered before and after birth. The guiding premise of the intervention was that helping mothers develop a reflective stance would enable them to become more regulating, sensitive, and autonomy-promoting caregivers and thus positively affect a range of developmental outcomes in their infants.

An Bhuil Gaeilge Agat?: Perspectives On The Irish Language In Ireland, Georgia Katherine Fyke Jan 2008

An Bhuil Gaeilge Agat?: Perspectives On The Irish Language In Ireland, Georgia Katherine Fyke

Honors Theses

The future of Irish as a living language is uncertain, and some fear it will vanish completely. In this paper I explore how the main language of Ireland shifted from Irish to English and discuss the perspectives of the Irish themselves toward the Irish language. Chapter 1 summarizes the history of the language from its introduction to the island by the earliest Celts to its current secondary role. Chapter 2 reviews the concepts of language death and revitalization both generally and as they apply to Irish, using models by David Crystal and Joshua Fishman. The final chapter is an analysis …

Women Disunited : Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale As A Critique Of Feminism, Alanna A. Callaway Jan 2008

Women Disunited : Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale As A Critique Of Feminism, Alanna A. Callaway

Master's Theses

While there is plenty of traditional feminist critique of male power structures in Atwood's works, and particularly in The Handmaid's Tale, this thesis argues that the power structure of Gilead (the biblically-inflected nation Atwood imagines) also critiques the feminine roles that support and enable the repression of other women. Placing the novel in the contexts of Atwood's career, feminism, and dystopian literature, provides a fuller understanding of how the novel functions as an expression of the disunity of women.

Thus, this thesis turns the focus of The Handmaid's Tale from the consequences of patriarchal control and "traditional" misogyny, to the …

A Bulwark Against Anarchy: Affirmative Action, Emory Law School, And Southern Self-Help, William B. Turner Jan 2008

A Bulwark Against Anarchy: Affirmative Action, Emory Law School, And Southern Self-Help, William B. Turner

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

This article demonstrates that Pre-Start, Emory Law School's affirmative action program from 1966 to 1972, provides a useful case study for refraining the current debate around affirmative action in law school admissions. The author performs post-hoc strict scrutiny on Pre-Start, showing that it meets and exceeds the standard set in the leading affirmative action case, Grutter v. Bollinger. The historical context for Pre-Start demonstrates how similar the current arguments against affirmative action in law school admissions are to the arguments used against racial integration of public schools in the first half of the twentieth century. This analysis provides valuable historical …

Post Trauma: Cambodian Refugees And Social Security's Disability Fraud Investigations, Theodore Mccombs Jan 2008

Post Trauma: Cambodian Refugees And Social Security's Disability Fraud Investigations, Theodore Mccombs

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

Since 2003, the Oakland, California unit of Social Security's Cooperative Disability Investigations program has targeted certain Cambodian refugee applicants with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Depression for fraud investigations. The practices of Social Security's anti-fraud program in Oakland reveal disturbing disadvantages to Cambodian refugee applicants in particular, including institutional prejudices in Social Security's rules and Cooperative Disability Investigative agents' gross insensitivity to claimants' impairments and cultural realities. This note examines these disadvantages under the legal norms of national origin discrimination, disability discrimination, and due process, and concludes with a policy proposal on how Social Security might better protect claimants' rights and …

Race And Religion In The United Nations Committee On The Elimination Of Racial Discrimination, José A. Lindgren Alves Jan 2008

Race And Religion In The United Nations Committee On The Elimination Of Racial Discrimination, José A. Lindgren Alves

University of San Francisco Law Review

This Article analyzes the work of CERD in the area of religion, a field which, by definition, would not necessarily be covered by the mandate of a committee devoted to the eradication of racism and racial discrimination. Notwithstanding this difference of scope, to the extent that, in the contemporary world, race and religion appear increasingly interwoven, the work of CERD on religion has gradually become accepted and considered necessary.

The Usage Of Causatives In Classical Chinese: A Review, Suree Choonharuangdej Jan 2008

The Usage Of Causatives In Classical Chinese: A Review, Suree Choonharuangdej

Manusya, Journal of Humanities

Many scholars have looked into relevant problems concerning the usage of causatives in their studies of Classical Chinese grammar. They find that, unlike the derivational system found in most Indo-European languages, the system of word-derivation in Classical Chinese (causative usage included) reveals that certain grammatical and semantic contrasts are regularly associated with tonal contrasts. In spite of such findings, we still consider it rather difficult to separate those derivational causative verbs from the general causative usage to which the syntactic structure is ascribed, not to mention the even harder task of distinguishing the causative usage from the putative one given …

Support New Minority Teachers Through Culture, Community And Collaboration, Alejandra Favela, Danielle Torres Jan 2008

Support New Minority Teachers Through Culture, Community And Collaboration, Alejandra Favela, Danielle Torres

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

While it is always a challenge to support and retain new teachers, supporting minority1 educators is especially significant if we are ever to reach a more equitable demographic balance in schools. Many teachers can feel overwhelmed and under-prepared to effectively address the cultural and linguistic diversity prevalent in today's classrooms. Additionally, minority teachers often experience distinct developmental issues too often neglected in support programs designed for new teachers.

Blood Relations: Collective Memory, Cultural Trauma, & The Prosecution & Execution Of Timothy Mcveigh, Jody Lynee Madeira Jan 2008

Blood Relations: Collective Memory, Cultural Trauma, & The Prosecution & Execution Of Timothy Mcveigh, Jody Lynee Madeira

Articles by Maurer Faculty

In the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing, processes of reconstruction - remembering victims, caring for family members and survivors, and punishing the perpetrators - began even as debris from the Murrah Federal Building was being cleared. Based on conclusions obtained from intensive interviews with 27 victims' family members and survivors, this article explores how memory of the bombing as a culturally traumatic event was constructed through participation in groups formed after the bombing and participation in the legal proceedings against perpetrators Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols. These acts cultivated the formation of various relationships - between family members and …

Early Childhood Classroom Quality And Preschool Learning Behaviors, Steven Placid Kachmar Jan 2008

Early Childhood Classroom Quality And Preschool Learning Behaviors, Steven Placid Kachmar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The intelligence quotient (IQ) continues to dominate educational decision-making although it lacks descriptive quality indicative of how children learn best and precisely what contributes to learning differences among children. Researchers have advocated for the use of alternative assessment methods to describe differences in children's learning. Limited research has been conducted in this area yet is supportive of learning behavior as an influential factor associated with scholastic achievement. Unfortunately, little research has been conducted on preschool learning behaviors, despite their link to positive child outcomes. Early childhood environments have similarly been linked to children's scholastic success and positive outcomes.

War Powers Under The South African Constitution, Stephen J. Ellmann Jan 2008

War Powers Under The South African Constitution, Stephen J. Ellmann

Articles & Chapters

South Africa's post-apartheid constitution is one of the most rights-protective constitutions of the world, a document framed to protect the country from the injustices of its grim past. Perhaps surprisingly, this paper finds that in important respects even South Africa's constitution confers striking powers on the executive in time of war or military hostilities. The paper begins with an analysis of the declaration of a state of national defense, South Africa's analogue to a declaration of war, and finds that the procedures applicable to such declarations are in most respects considerably less stringent than those applicable to the declaration of …

The Adoption Or Adaptation Of Integrated Marketing Communications For A Regional Promotional Campaign Of A State Government Office, Anthony Warren Hall

Theses : Honours

This study investigates how an integrated marketing communications (IMC) strategy could be adopted or adapted for an effective regional promotional campaign of a State Government office. As in-depth understanding of the process of adoption or adaptation of IMC was needed, qualitative research methodology was used. The study utilised Foucault's concepts of discourse, knowledge and power to develop the knowledge-practice-recommended practice framework In this study, five one-to-one structured interviews were conducted with IMC practitioners who had previous experience in IMC and State Government regional promotional campaigns, and were residents of the State where they practised IMC. Using the knowledge part of …

Is Pain Really God’S Megaphone? Responding To C.S. Lewis, Lisa Moate Jan 2008

Is Pain Really God’S Megaphone? Responding To C.S. Lewis, Lisa Moate

Theses

In this study I will defend C.S. Lewis’ claim that people can be morally improved through experiences of pain and suffering and that, as such, attempts to avoid painful experiences are inappropriate. In explaining the context within which Lewis treats pain, a discussion of the nature of pain itself is not necessary since the importance of Lewis’ work lies in its practical application and the role it has in people’s lives; that is, in contributing towards our moral growth. The nature of pain is examined insofar as clarifying the idea it that can only be understood individually due to the …

Lost In Translation: International Criminal Tribunals And The Legal Implications Of Interpreted Testimony, Joshua Karton Jan 2008

Lost In Translation: International Criminal Tribunals And The Legal Implications Of Interpreted Testimony, Joshua Karton

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

When courtroom interpreters translate a witness's testimony, errors are not just possible, they are inherent to the process. Moreover, the occurrence of such errors is not merely a technical problem; errors can infringe on the rights of defendants or even lead to verdicts based on faulty findings of fact. International criminal proceedings, which are necessarily multilinguistic, are both particularly susceptible to interpretation errors and sensitive to questions of procedural fairness. This Article surveys the history and mechanics of courtroom interpretation, explains the inherent indeterminacy of translated language, and describes the other sources of inaccuracy in interpreted testimony. It then assesses …
