Production Of Syllable Stress In Speakers With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Rhea Paul, Nancy Bianchi, Amy Augustyn, Ami Klin, Fred Volkmar Jan 2008

Production Of Syllable Stress In Speakers With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Rhea Paul, Nancy Bianchi, Amy Augustyn, Ami Klin, Fred Volkmar

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

This paper reports a study of the ability to reproduce stress in a nonsense syllable imitation task by adolescent speakers with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), as compared to typically developing (TD) age-mates. Results are reported for both raters’ judgments of the subjects’ stress production, as well as acoustic measures of pitch range and duration during stressed and unstressed syllable production. Results reveal small but significant differences between speakers with ASD and typical speakers in both perceptual ratings of stress and instrumental measures of duration of syllables. The implications of these findings for understanding prosodic deficits in ASD are discussed.

Into The Den Of Evils: The Genizaros In Colonial New Mexico, Doris Swann Avery Jan 2008

Into The Den Of Evils: The Genizaros In Colonial New Mexico, Doris Swann Avery

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

As a result of the Indian slave trade in the American Southwest, a group of detribalized Indians emerged in New Mexico during the Spanish colonial period. These Indians came to be known as the genízaros and, through the process scholars call ethnogenesis, developed their own identity by incorporating Hispano-Christian cultural practices while preserving their native ways. The genízaros were products of a widespread and lucrative trade in Plains Indian captives and, as such, they represented various tribes, including Apaches, Navajos, Comanches, Kiowas, Pawnees, Utes and Wichitas. The term “genízaro” emerged as a caste label during the Spanish colonial period and …

Mexican Immigrant Parents' Beliefs And Practices Related To Literacy, Pamela M. Spurgeon Jan 2008

Mexican Immigrant Parents' Beliefs And Practices Related To Literacy, Pamela M. Spurgeon

Education Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to describe the literacy practices and beliefs exhibited by immigrant parents of Mexican descent in Oregon. The researcher collected data using a questionnaire and examined the correlation between generational differences of immigrants and respondents' beliefs and practices regarding reading and writing. From the survey sample, the researcher selected 5 representative families for observations and interviews to further explore how literacy is practiced in Mexican immigrant families' homes and daily lives. The belief regarding whether or not children begin learning before they go to school generated the most disagreement amongst participants. Data correlating acculturation and …

Evaluating The Serious And Violent Offender Reentry Initiative Within And Across The New England Region, Jessica A. Parent

Master's Theses and Capstones

The reentry of inmates back into the community is a hotly debated topic in society today. A descriptive study was conducted to analyze what mental health services were being provided to inmates who were participants in the Serious and Violent Offender Reentry Initiative (SVORI). Additionally, barriers to implementing comprehensive mental health services, along with trends within and across the New England Region regarding mental health services were examined. The data collected was from three program evaluation surveys completed by Project Directors for SVORI in 2003, 2005, and 2006. The results indicate that the mental health services provided to SVORI participants …

The Discrete, The Relational, The Selfish, And The Societal: Elements Present In All Transactions, Christine Liyanto Jan 2008

The Discrete, The Relational, The Selfish, And The Societal: Elements Present In All Transactions, Christine Liyanto

UC Law Business Journal

In the discourse of contract theory, we associate discrete contracts with a goal of self-interest, while associating relational contracts with community-based objectives. This article examines the characteristics of the discrete paradigm, the relational paradigm, and the way in which all transactions reflect the goals associated with both of those models.

Trade Or Business Within The United States As An Interpretive Problem Under The Internal Revenue Code: Five Propositions, Anthony P. Polito Jan 2008

Trade Or Business Within The United States As An Interpretive Problem Under The Internal Revenue Code: Five Propositions, Anthony P. Polito

UC Law Business Journal

Whether a particular set of activities constitute the conduct of a trade or business within the United States is an ongoing interpretive question affecting many foreign taxpayers. It controls what form of U.S. taxation, if any, applies to them. In the domestic context, a trade or business entails profit-oriented non-investment activity that is regular, continuous and considerable. It is tempting, in the transition to the international context, to conclude that the conduct of a trade or business within the U.S. requires that the taxpayer's U.S. activities must be regular, continuous, and considerable, and the standard is often articulated in this …

Crisis Rhetoric : A Theory Of Communication In Times Of Crisis, Eric D. Loepp Jan 2008

Crisis Rhetoric : A Theory Of Communication In Times Of Crisis, Eric D. Loepp

Honors Theses

We conducted an experiment to assess the effect of presidential rhetoric in a time of crisis. Our study was based in part on terror management theory, which posits that subtle reminders of death (mortality salience) lead to increased support of leaders an authority figures. Subjects were randomly placed in either a mortality salient condition or control condition. We also composed two speeches - one charismatic and one non-charismatic - and subjects were randomly assigned to hear one of the two. Based on elements of terror management theory, we hypothesized that in a time of crisis the charismatic speech would be …

Fostering Leaders For Social Justice : Ally Identity Development And Efficacy, Allison M. Duval

Honors Theses

The goal of this thesis is to develop a conceptual understanding of ally identity and effective and sustainable ally behaviors in order to analyze ally development at the University of Richmond and synthesize brief recommendations for practical applications for cultivating allies. This first chapter on "Enduring Inequality and the Need for Allies" defines allies, explores privilege and constructions of difference in terms of race and gender, exposes the reality of current injustices, and demonstrates the need for allies as leaders of dominant social groups to work alongside leaders of non-dominant social groups in effecting broad social change. The second chapter …

Designing And Evaluating A Russian Tagset, Serge Sharoff, Mikhail Kopotev, Tomaž Erjavec, Anna Feldman, Dagmar Divjak

Department of Linguistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper reports the principles behind designing a tagset to cover Russian morphosyntactic phenomena, modifications of the core tagset, and its evaluation. The tagset and associated morphosyntactic specifications are based on the MULTEXT-East framework, while the decisions in designing it were aimed at achieving a balance between parameters important for linguists and the possibility to detect and disambiguate them automatically. The final tagset contains about 600 tags and achieves about 95% accuracy on the disambiguated portion of the Russian National Corpus. We have also produced a test set of tagging models and corpora that can be shared with other researchers.

Tagset Design, Inflected Languages, And N-Gram Tagging, Anna Feldman Jan 2008

Tagset Design, Inflected Languages, And N-Gram Tagging, Anna Feldman

Department of Linguistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper explores the relationship between the tagset design and linguistic properties of inflected languages for the task of morphosyntactic tagging. Some information theoretic measures and statistics on these languages are reported which show, unsurprisingly, that the tagsets for morphologically rich languages are larger than tagsets for English and the average tag/token ambiguity is higher. The surprising outcome of the experiments is that for Catalan, Czech, Polish, Portuguese, and Russian – which are considered to be “word order” free languages (to various degrees) – the knowledge about the preceding tag reduces the uncertainty about the tag in question if the detailed …

Cultural Competency In Capital Mitigation, Scharlette Holdman, Christopher Seeds Jan 2008

Cultural Competency In Capital Mitigation, Scharlette Holdman, Christopher Seeds

Hofstra Law Review

Cultural factors so pervasively influence the interactions of the client with other people - including all of those with whom he comes into contact at significant times in his life (e.g. in educational, medical, and correctional institutions), those surrounding him in the community in which he develops, and, critically, the members of the defense team - that it is imperative for the defense team to have the talents necessary to conduct a mitigation investigation that is culturally competent. The investigation must recognize and surmount an array of barriers, overt and subtle, to obtaining information from people of variegated backgrounds. As …

Incorporation And Originalist Theory, Lawrence B. Solum Jan 2008

Incorporation And Originalist Theory, Lawrence B. Solum

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Does the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution incorporate the Bill of Rights contained in the first eight amendments? And how should an originalist answer that question? This paper focuses on the latter question--the issues of originalist theory that are raised by judicial and scholarly debates over what is called "incorporation."

The inquiry proceeds in six parts. Part I answers the questions: "What is incorporation?" and "What is originalism?" Part II examines the theoretical framework for an investigation of incorporation that operates within the narrow confines of interpretation of the linguistic meaning text based on the assumption that the …

Codes And Hypertext: The Intertextuality Of International And Comparative Law, Marylin J. Raisch Jan 2008

Codes And Hypertext: The Intertextuality Of International And Comparative Law, Marylin J. Raisch

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The field of information studies reveals gaps in the literature of international and comparative law as part of interdisciplinary and textual studies. To illustrate the kind of theoretical and text-based work that could be done, this essay provides an example of such a study. Religious law texts, civil law codes, treaties and constitutional texts may provide a means to reveal the nature of hypertext as the new format for commentary. Margins used to be used for commentary, and now this can be done with hypertext and links in footnotes. Scholarly communication in general is now intertextual, and texts derive value …

Developing Tests And Questionnaires For A National Assessment Of Educational Achievement, Prue Anderson, George Morgan

Assessment and Reporting

This book addresses the design of two types of data collection instruments: student achievement tests and background questionnaires. Part 1 covers the development of an assessment framework and a test blueprint, item writing, pretesting, and final test layout. Part 2 delineates comparable stages and activities in the construction of background questionnaires, which are used to gather information from students, teachers, head teachers, or parents on variables that might help explain differences in student performance on the achievement test. Part 3 describes how to design a manual for test administration to help ensure that all students take the test under standardised …

The Distinct Cases Of Kosovo And South Ossetia: Deciding The Question Of Independence On The Merits And International Law, Ronald Thomas Jan 2008

The Distinct Cases Of Kosovo And South Ossetia: Deciding The Question Of Independence On The Merits And International Law, Ronald Thomas

Fordham International Law Journal

The cases of Kosovo and South Ossetia provide two opportunities for the community of nations to reconcile the rights of Serbia and Georgia with the rights of the peoples within their borders. Instead of doing so, other countries used these cases for ideological and political posturing and continued to do so as of the end of 2008. This Note will review Kosovo and South Ossetia and attempt to take the politics out of an inherently political decision-whether or not to recognize them as independent states. Part I of this Note will review how the United Nations has approached the issues …
