A Marketplace In Miniature: Norwich Pattern Books As Cultural Agency, Victoria Mitchell Jan 2008

A Marketplace In Miniature: Norwich Pattern Books As Cultural Agency, Victoria Mitchell

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The paper analyses 18th-century pattern books from the city of Norwich (UK) as examples of cultural mediation. The anthropologist Arjun Appadurai notes that from a ‘methodological point of view it is the things-in-motion that illuminate their human and social context’. The books are always on the move, portable, negotiated afresh with each encounter; they are a marketplace in miniature, carrying patterns, fabrics and names across geographical and cultural borders, snippets of detail in sample form linking back to the special relationship between the master weaver and merchant for which Norwich was famous.  The word ‘detail’ (Fr. détailler) is used here …

A New Start: Re-Thinking The Display And Interpretation Of African Textiles At The Detroit Institute Of Arts, Howard Sutcliffe

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In November 2007 the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) will open its doors to the public after several years of renovation and rebuilding.  In a radical departure from the traditional chronological and geographical approach to art history the new DIA will provide its visitors with an innovative experience that focuses as much on the stories and connections behind the art as the art itself.  Textiles from the DIA’s encyclopedic collection will play a large and integral role in this new vision, from European tapestry to Native American beadwork textiles will feature prominently in almost every new gallery.

This paper will …

Supplementary Warp Patterned Textiles Of The Cham In Vietnam, Michael C. Howard Jan 2008

Supplementary Warp Patterned Textiles Of The Cham In Vietnam, Michael C. Howard

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The Cham People

The Malayo-Polynesian speaking peoples of Vietnam and Cambodia speak languages belonging to the Malayic group of Sundic languages. Sundic speaking peoples lived on the island of Borneo prior to their spreading to adjacent regions. From Borneo they sailed north to Vietnam, west to peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra, and south to Java and Bali. While Sundic speaking groups appear to have migrated to parts of Indonesia as early as 1500 BC, they do not seem to have arrived along the coast of Vietnam until some time around 600 BC. It is during the period 600 BC to 300 …

A New Start: Re-Thinking The Display And Interpretation Of African Textiles At The Detroit Institute Of Arts, Howard Sutcliffe

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Introduction

When the DIA began implementing its renovation, restoration, and expansion project in 2001, its objective was to make essential upgrades to the Museum’s aging facility, improve traffic flow and way-finding patterns and increase gallery space. The enormous task of the building project presented the unprecedented opportunity for the Museum to reshape the visitor experience, not only through an upgraded building and new amenities, but also by rethinking how to present its world-class collection to the public.

More than 5,000 works of art have been reinstalled in some 150,000 square feet of gallery space in a way that allows visitors …

Slay The Three-Headed Demon!, Peggy C. Davis Jan 2008

Slay The Three-Headed Demon!, Peggy C. Davis

Faculty Articles

An invisible demon walks the halls of all the law schools I have known, vexing the learning environment and discouraging engagement. This demon is a special breed of the Dysfunctional Hierarchy species.' It has three heads. The middle head, Intelligence Bias, does most of the demon's thinking. On either side are the smoky-nostriled head of Intellectual Segregation and the fire-breathing head of Tracking. My proposal for improving legal education is that we take up our swords and slay the demon. Without it, law schools could stop the much-criticized practice of sharpening minds by narrowing them, and instead cultivate the intellectual …

Failing Students Or Failing Schools?: Holding States Accountable For The High School Dropout Crisis, Deborah N. Archer Jan 2008

Failing Students Or Failing Schools?: Holding States Accountable For The High School Dropout Crisis, Deborah N. Archer

Faculty Articles

The issue of the nation's low high school graduation rates is beginning to emerge as part of our national discussion about education reform. Yet, there has been very little discussion of who is responsible for addressing the growing crisis and devising a comprehensive response. Implicit in state constitutional provisions providing a right to education is the obligation for the state to provide every child with a meaningful opportunity to earn a high school diploma. School systems with chronically low high school graduation rates are Jailing to provide their students with the basic level of education guaranteed fry most state constitutions. …

Language Of Sex: Moral Socialization And Reproductive Education In Public Schools, Melyn Heckelman Jan 2008

Language Of Sex: Moral Socialization And Reproductive Education In Public Schools, Melyn Heckelman

Honors Theses

This thesis is the product of my five weeks of ethnography in three classrooms in Waterville, Maine and the surrounding area, in addition to individual and group interviews with both students and the educators themselves. It seeks to understand why, in a culture so saturated with images of sexuality and naked bodies, the teachers I observed were largely unwilling or unable to discuss human sexuality in public schools as anything more than a public health issue. Since the 1960s sex educators have been fighting to teach about contraceptives. Recent longitudinal studies have confirmed what proponents of comprehensive education have been …

African American Educators: Why They Teach In Rural Georgia School Districts And Why They Remain There, Sarah Louise Alonzo-Osborne Jan 2008

African American Educators: Why They Teach In Rural Georgia School Districts And Why They Remain There, Sarah Louise Alonzo-Osborne

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The student population in the public school systems throughout the United States has become more racially and ethnically diverse, yet the minority teacher population has declined sharply. Currently, Caucasians comprise an overwhelming majority of the teacher population while African American teachers represent approximately only 8% of the field. This study explores the African American educators' experiences of teaching in rural Georgia school districts. This study is being conducted to identify what factors influence African American educators' decisions to teach in rural Georgia school districts and why they remain there. In order to explore the experiences from the participants' perspective, a …

Understanding The Motivations Of Ghanaian Bureaucrats, Christine Naa Norley Lokko Jan 2008

Understanding The Motivations Of Ghanaian Bureaucrats, Christine Naa Norley Lokko

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examines the factors that affect the work performance of Ghanaian bureaucrats. Three decades ago Robert Price (1975) examined the impact that kinship ties had on the motivation of Ghanaian bureaucrats. He found that Ghanaian bureaucrats behaved in particularistic fashions as opposed to acting in a universalistic manner, suggesting kinship was a major determinant of bureaucratic routine. This study followed the work of Price by replicating his mix of interviews and surveys, with the addition of questions that incorporate recent work on bureaucracy that suggest motivation involves a mix of solidary, functional, and pecuniary preferences (Brehm and Gates, 1997; …

Entrepreneurial Organizational Characteristics In Hawaiian Elementary Schools: Its Relationship To School Characteristics And Student Achievement, J. Patrick Byrne Jan 2008

Entrepreneurial Organizational Characteristics In Hawaiian Elementary Schools: Its Relationship To School Characteristics And Student Achievement, J. Patrick Byrne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To determine the level of entrepreneurial organizational characteristics in Hawaiian public elementary schools, 3,816 teachers in 111 schools were surveyed using the Public School Entrepreneurial Inventory (PSEI). This survey was developed and used previously in Israel. This was the first application of the PSEI in the United States. Two domains of entrepreneurial organizational characteristics were measured: principal proactiveness and school innovativeness. Based on the levels of entrepreneurial characteristics, schools were grouped into four entrepreneurial profiles. A chi square goodness of fit was used to determine the variation in entrepreneurial profiles between the regions of Israel and Hawaii. Based on the …

A Poetics Of The Soul: Devotional Poetry In Elizabeth Barrett Browning; Alfred, Lord Tennyson; And Christina Rossetti, Heather Cianciola Jan 2008

A Poetics Of The Soul: Devotional Poetry In Elizabeth Barrett Browning; Alfred, Lord Tennyson; And Christina Rossetti, Heather Cianciola

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study explores devotional poetry of the nineteenth century as a poetic discourse in which tropes of the human soul connect spiritual reflection with lived experience in order to engage literary, religious, and social issues in Victorian England. Like G. B. Tennyson's Victorian Devotional Poetry: The Tractarian Mode (1989), this project situates individual poets in their cultural and religious contexts, and it encourages an understanding of devotional verse as an important feature of Victorian poetry. In addition to these aims, this dissertation surveys both popular and lesser-known devotional verse by poets not formally part of the Oxford Movement in order …

Staying The Serial Filer – Interpreting The New Exploding Stay Provisions Of § 362(C)(3) Of The Bankruptcy Code, Laura B. Bartell Jan 2008

Staying The Serial Filer – Interpreting The New Exploding Stay Provisions Of § 362(C)(3) Of The Bankruptcy Code, Laura B. Bartell

Law Faculty Research Publications

When a petition is filed commencing a case under the Bankruptcy Code, the petition alone stays certain acts against the debtor, the debtor's property, or property of the bankruptcy estate. The Code has always provided that, absent favorable judicial action on an application to lift the stay, the automatic stay remains in effect with respect to an act against property of the estate until the property is no longer property of the estate, and with respect to any other act until the case is closed or dismissed or a discharge is granted or denied. But in the amendments to the …

Aesthetic Pedagogy: Kierkegaard And Adorno On The Communication Of Possibility, Clifford Gentry Lee Jan 2008

Aesthetic Pedagogy: Kierkegaard And Adorno On The Communication Of Possibility, Clifford Gentry Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on Adorno's appropriative reading of Kierkegaard. Adorno interprets Kierkegaard's notion of the aesthetic as an active philosophical principal. He finds this principle to be at work throughout Kierkegaard's authorship as the means of the justification of the particular and concrete in defiance of their would be enslavement to the general and abstract. The aesthetic principle is that which requires Kierkegaard's readers to become active participants in the formation of the experienced meaning of his texts. Adorno's approach facilitates a reading of Kierkegaard that focuses on his pedagogical use of the communicative power of imagery. At the same …

From The Margins To The Center: A Qualitative Study Giving Voice To Black Women In Athletic Training Education Programs, Bonnie J. Siple Jan 2008

From The Margins To The Center: A Qualitative Study Giving Voice To Black Women In Athletic Training Education Programs, Bonnie J. Siple

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Black women are dramatically underrepresented in the profession of athletic training. Failure to introduce Black women and their perspective to the profession and the literature may result in their continued exclusion. It may be theorized that one of the reasons more Black female students are not entering into the study of athletic training and matriculating through to the point of graduation and credentialing is that they do not have adequate mentors to successfully guide them. The purpose of this dissertation study was to examine the perceived effects of mentoring and other factors on the retention and credentialing of Black women …

The Effects Of Fluency-Building Strategies On The Oral Reading Rates Of First-Grade Students, Holly Walker Jan 2008

The Effects Of Fluency-Building Strategies On The Oral Reading Rates Of First-Grade Students, Holly Walker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of explicit fluency-building strategies on the oral reading rates of first-grade students. According to the National Reading Panel (2000) there are five essential components of reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. All components are needed to achieve the complex skill of reading. Due to the reciprocal nature of these skills pertaining to reading, a deficit in any reading component can cause difficulties in learning to read (O'Connor, 2007). Therefore, reading fluency is critical to proficiency in reading. Specifically, this study investigated whether explicit instruction in fluency-building strategies …

The Experience Of Older Men Living Alone: A Phenomenological Perspective, Leslie Susan Yetter Jan 2008

The Experience Of Older Men Living Alone: A Phenomenological Perspective, Leslie Susan Yetter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to uncover older men's experience of living alone. This study was pursued because much of the literature reports that older men who live alone face the highest risk of death, mental illness, physical disability, and social isolation in our country. Based upon this literature, nurses appeared to be ignoring the needs of this vulnerable population. Using Giorgi's phenomenological method, 14 men 60 years and older who lived alone were interviewed and asked about their experience living alone. In the data analysis, the themes of self-growth, self-determination, structure, balance and sense of purpose emerged. Essentially, …

Orientalizing Post/Communism: Europe's 'Wild East' In Literature And Film, Nataša Kovačević Jan 2008

Orientalizing Post/Communism: Europe's 'Wild East' In Literature And Film, Nataša Kovačević

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

The essay posits post/communist Eastern Europe as a neocolonial terrain to show how contemporary discursive underpinnings of global capitalism and liberal democracy have been shaped by a combined Orientalist demonization of communist regimes and Eastern European cultures. It analyzes how old Orientalisms surface in the Cold War period, re-articulated in narratives that define a European or civilizational ideal as an essentially liberal-democratic project against the discursive palimpsest of totalitarian, barbarian, and Oriental communists. The establishment of this discourse has helped to justify transitions to market economy and liberal-civic society in post-communism. These developments increasingly provincialize Eastern Europe through suppressing its …

Government-Sponsored Chaplains And Crisis: Walking The Fine Line In Disaster Response And Daily Life, Mary Jean Dolan Jan 2008

Government-Sponsored Chaplains And Crisis: Walking The Fine Line In Disaster Response And Daily Life, Mary Jean Dolan

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Two significant public issues have been the limits of partnership between government and religion and government's role in helping citizens cope with disasters. One intriguing intersection of these issues is local governments' use of chaplaincy programs to address the human face of trauma, both large-scale and personal. This Article asserts that the constitutional line differs for mass disaster response and the daily human dramas, clearly painful, addressed by local police and fire departments. There is an important and valid role for clergy and faith-based assistance as part of the broad spectrum of governmental disaster relief. In the everyday tragedies, however, …

Rethinking Relevance In Art Education: Paradigm Shifts And Policy Problematics In The Wake Of The Information Age, James Haywood Rolling

Teaching and Leadership - All Scholarship

This article addresses the advocacy of organizations like the National Art Education Association that seek greater legislative support, funding and time allocations to be devoted to arts instruction and the development of arts practices in the arena of public education. The author argues the timeliness of a reconceived paradigm for understanding and advocating the relevancy of arts practices in the wake of the Information Age. This article seeks to rethink the semiotics defining art in an era of shifting paradigms and as contextualized in contemporary educational policy.
