Gender Disparities: A Medical Detoxification Program, Alberto Coustasse, Karan P. Singh, Sue G. Lurie, Yu-Sheng Lin, Claudia S. Coggin, Fernando Trevino Jan 2008

Gender Disparities: A Medical Detoxification Program, Alberto Coustasse, Karan P. Singh, Sue G. Lurie, Yu-Sheng Lin, Claudia S. Coggin, Fernando Trevino

Management Faculty Research

Significant gaps exist in health care regarding gender in the United States. Health status, social roles, culturally patterned behavior and access to health care can be influenced by gender. Women have been the primary users of health care and minority women usually have received poorer quality care than Non-Hispanic White (NHW) females. The objectives of this study were to identify gender, racial and ethnic disparities in access to substance abuse treatment in a Texas hospital. Secondary data collected on 1,309 subjects who underwent detoxification were studied. Gender, race/ethnicity, drug of abuse, relapse and financial classification were included in the analysis. …

Mitigation Abroad: Preparing A Successful Case For Life For The Foreign National Client, Gregory J. Kuykendall, Alicia Amezcua-Rodriguez, Mark Warren Jan 2008

Mitigation Abroad: Preparing A Successful Case For Life For The Foreign National Client, Gregory J. Kuykendall, Alicia Amezcua-Rodriguez, Mark Warren

Hofstra Law Review

Many capital defendants are foreign nationals; their representation both presents special challenges and offers special opportunities. In accordance with the ABA's Guidelines for the Appointment and Performance of Defense Counsel in Death Penalty Cases reprinted in 31 Hofstra L. Rev. 913 (2003) and the Supplementary Guidelines that are the subject of this issue, competent counsel must handle both effectively. Our article provides a detailed primer for accomplishing this.

A foreign country may acknowledge a person as a national on a basis that is not intuitively obvious to American counsel. If so, the person may be entitled to rights under both …

Using The Supplementary Guidelines For The Mitigation Function Of Defense Teams In Death Penalty Cases To Change The Picture In Post-Conviction, Mark E. Olive, Russell Stetler Jan 2008

Using The Supplementary Guidelines For The Mitigation Function Of Defense Teams In Death Penalty Cases To Change The Picture In Post-Conviction, Mark E. Olive, Russell Stetler

Hofstra Law Review

This article appears in the Hofstra Law Review symposium issue on the Supplementary Guidelines for the Mitigation Function of Defense Teams in Death Penalty cases.

As the ABA's Guidelines for the Appointment and Performance of Defense Counsel in Death Penalty Cases reprinted in 31 Hofstra L. Rev. 913 (2003) detail, success in capital post-conviction proceedings will depend not just on the quality of the legal arguments counsel advance but, probably more critically, on counsel's skill at changing the picture that has previously been presented. The old facts and legal arguments - those which resulted in a conviction and imposition of …

In Search Of Female Space : Resistance And Creation In Tsitsi Dangarembga’S Nervous Conditions And She No Longer Weeps, Diana Mckenna Jan 2008

In Search Of Female Space : Resistance And Creation In Tsitsi Dangarembga’S Nervous Conditions And She No Longer Weeps, Diana Mckenna

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In this paper I explore how with Nervous Conditions (1988) and She No Longer Weeps (1987), Zimbabwean author Tsitsi Dangarembga creates alternative literary forms in her representation of architectural, bodily and narrative spaces and their relationship to female identities. These physical spaces the women characters inhabit, resist and in which they assert their voices must be cleared of patriarchal control in order for female-centered space to be produced. Moreover, the creation of a new speech paradigm, one that affirms the female voice, is crucial to the journey towards female autonomy. Inasmuch as Dangarembga explores the ways in which physical spaces …

La Situacion Socio-Politica Y Cultural De Puerto Rico Manifestada En El Ciclo Novelistico De Manuel Zeno GandíA, Robert Osmar Membreno Jan 2008

La Situacion Socio-Politica Y Cultural De Puerto Rico Manifestada En El Ciclo Novelistico De Manuel Zeno GandíA, Robert Osmar Membreno

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Works of microcultural relevance are characterized by being read and valued primarily within the confines of a given culture. They sometimes do not transcend their own linguistic, geographical, and cultural borders, but rather, bestow upon a country, a territory, or in this case, an island, a sense of identity. Without these works, the cultural profile of a people would be blurred and even non-existent. Consequently, the fact that a work fails to speak to other cultural and linguistic contexts may actually attest to its literary importance. This is the case with the writings of Manuel Zeno Gandía, which lay the …

The Many Masks Of Louisa May Alcott’S Gothic Heroines, Lisa Poggi Jan 2008

The Many Masks Of Louisa May Alcott’S Gothic Heroines, Lisa Poggi

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Many of the female characters in the Gothic thrillers of Louisa May Alcott wear masks or are or portrayed as “actresses” who conceal their passion with the appearance of being the typical domestic woman. This idea is most clearly presented in “Behind a Mask” and “Pauline’s Passion and Punishment.” In these thrillers, hidden passion causes problems in each heroine’s life, either because her strong will is an unacceptable female characteristic and she will therefore be shunned in some way by society or by those dear to her; or, expressing her passion will result in disaster of some kind. This representation …

A Menu Of Activities In Different Intelligence Areas To Differentiate Instruction For Upper Elementary Students Related To The Book Because Of Winn-Dixie, Caroline F. Elser, Audrey C. Rule Jan 2008

A Menu Of Activities In Different Intelligence Areas To Differentiate Instruction For Upper Elementary Students Related To The Book Because Of Winn-Dixie, Caroline F. Elser, Audrey C. Rule

Open Educational Resources

Today’s elementary classrooms are becoming more diverse, requiring teachers to provide effective instruction to children with a wide range of academic performance, ability, background, and interest. This work focuses on the development of a menu of differentiated instructional activities for teaching literacy to upper elementary students. The author, a former elementary teacher, worked with a faculty member and her literacy methods class of undergraduate preservice elementary teachers to develop this teaching unit based on a popular, award-winning children’s novel (DiCamillo, 2000). The menu of various activities organized in ten different intelligence areas (logical-mathematical, linguistic, bodilykinesthetic, spatial, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, naturalist, …

Improving Knowledge Management Programs Using Marginal Utility In A Metric Space Generated By Conceptual Graphs, Jeffrey A. Schiffel Jan 2008

Improving Knowledge Management Programs Using Marginal Utility In A Metric Space Generated By Conceptual Graphs, Jeffrey A. Schiffel

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge management has emerged as a field of endeavor that blends a systems approach with methods drawn from organizational management and learning. In contrast, knowledge representation, a branch of artificial intelligence, is grounded in formal methods. Research in the separate behavioral and the structural disciplines – knowledge management and knowledge engineering - has not traditionally cross-pollinated. This has prevented the development of many practical practices useful in organizations. Organization managers - line and senior - lack guidance in where to direct improvement efforts targeted at specific groups of company knowledge workers. Demonstrated here is Knowledge Improvement Measurement Space (KIMS), a …

“Bridging Activities,” New Media Literacies, And Advanced Foreign Language Proficiency, Steven L. Thorne, Jonathon Reinhardt

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this article we propose the pedagogical model bridging activities to address advanced foreign language proficiency in the context of existing and emerging internet communication and information tools and communities. The article begins by establishing the need for language and genre-focused activities at the advanced level that attend to the shifting social practices and emerging literacies associated with digital media. Grounded in principles of language awareness and the concept of multiliteracies, the bridging activities model centers on guided exploration and analysis of student selected or created digital vernacular texts originating in Web 2.0 and other technologies/practices such as instant messaging …

Demonstratives And Cognitive Significance, Adam Simon '08 Jan 2008

Demonstratives And Cognitive Significance, Adam Simon '08

Honors Projects

As interesting as it is, my aim in this paper, however, is not to mark the various trends that have come and gone in the history of semantics. Rather, I consider how semantics has treated a small portion of language that involving demonstrative expressions in order to flesh out how semantics simpliciter has fallen on a mistake; or more accurately, a misdiagnosis. This misdiagnosis has either led incorrect semantic treatments of demonstratives, or has created a "shadow-sickness"; which is bound to be left untreated b)' any account semantics can give, because those accounts process machinery ill-equipped to deal with such …

Markers Of Dyslexia In Adult Spanish-Speakers Who Report Severe Difficulty Learning English, Elizabeth Ijalba Jan 2008

Markers Of Dyslexia In Adult Spanish-Speakers Who Report Severe Difficulty Learning English, Elizabeth Ijalba

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The relationship between native-language reading ability and second-language (L2) learning was explored in a cohort of 60 adult Spanish-speakers learning English as a second language. The research questions centered on whether underlying nativelanguage deficits associated with dyslexia would be present in a subset of English Language Learners who reported severe difficulty learning English. Our participants were divided into two education groups (below and above12th grade). These two groups were classified into three groups based on self- and teacher- ratings of ease or difficulty in English learning ability: for the high-education group, Poor English Language Learners (PELL, N=7); Good English Language …

L1 Acquisition Of Japanese Particles: A Corpus-Based Study, Mari Fujimoto Jan 2008

L1 Acquisition Of Japanese Particles: A Corpus-Based Study, Mari Fujimoto

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation is a comprehensive examination of L1 Japanese particle acquisition using two sets of corpora of naturalistic speech, JCHAT, longitudinal speech data of three Japanese children and the mothers (Miyata 2004a, b, and c, and MacWhinney 2000), and CHJ, adult-to-adult telephone conversation. The analysis reveals that despite differences in their language environment, all three children complete particle acquisition around MLU (m) 3.00 regardless of differences in the threshold of particle use. Further, none of the three children mimicked their mother's frequency of particle use, even as they all conform to a particular sequence of particle acquisition. The first set …

Development Of Lexical Tone Production In Disyllabic Words By 2- To 6-Year-Old Mandarin-Speaking Children, Puisan Wong Jan 2008

Development Of Lexical Tone Production In Disyllabic Words By 2- To 6-Year-Old Mandarin-Speaking Children, Puisan Wong

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study investigated children's development in the production of Mandarin lexical tones in familiar disyllabic words and tested the hypothesis that disyllabic tone contours with more complex fundamental frequency contours are more difficult for children to produce. Participants were forty-four 2- to 6-year-old monolingual Mandarin-speaking children and 12 mothers. Their disyllabic tone productions were elicited by picture naming and low-pass filtered to eliminate lexical information while retaining the fundamental frequency contours. Three Mandarin-speaking judges listened to the filtered stimuli, and categorized the children's and adult's disyllabic tones. Acoustic analysis was performed on selected accurate child and adult productions and on …

Latino Louisiana, LáZaro Lima Jan 2008

Latino Louisiana, LáZaro Lima

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

When Louisiana became the 18th state of the Union in 1812, the territory was already seeped in the linguistic, historical, and cultural antecedents that had made New Orleans, its most important city at the time, one of the first multilingual, multiracial, and multiethnic cosmopolitan centers in the United States. The origins of Spanish-speaking Latino Louisiana can be traced to the arrival of Alonso Alvarez de Pineda (c. 1492-1520) in 1519. Alvarez de Pineda sailed from Cuba to explore the uncharted territories between the Florida peninsula -- modern-day Arkansas and Louisiana -- and the southern Gulf of Mexico region. The purpose …

A Poem Is A Robe And A Castle: Inscribing Verses On Textiles And Architecture In The Alhambra, Olga Bush Jan 2008

A Poem Is A Robe And A Castle: Inscribing Verses On Textiles And Architecture In The Alhambra, Olga Bush

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

This paper studies the interrelationship between textiles, architecture and poetry in the Alhambra, the palatial complex of the Nasrids, the last Muslim dynasty in the Iberian Peninsula.  Poetic figures likening architecture to textiles in parietal inscriptions, which I will call “textile metaphors,” are the crux of this interrelationship.  I limit discussion to a single example from the epigraphy of the Alhambra: a poem inscribed in the interior of the Qalahurra al-jadıda, a tower-palace in the palatial complex.  The focal point is the term muwashsha, common to the vocabulary of textile design and literary form, which is further employed here to …

Supplementary Warp Patterned Textiles Of The Cham In Vietnam, Michael C. Howard Jan 2008

Supplementary Warp Patterned Textiles Of The Cham In Vietnam, Michael C. Howard

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The difficult supplementary warp weaving technique appears to have been developed initially by Tai-speaking peoples in what is today southern China. The decorative technique subsequently diffused across Mainland Southeast Asia as far as Bhutan as well as to the southern Philippines and Indonesia. Use of the technique has declined considerably in recent years, until today it is still employed by only a few peoples in Southeast Asia. In the case of the Cham of southern Vietnam, the technique has not merely survived but it remains one of the dominant decorative techniques used by Cham weavers. The paper provides an examination …

Translation Of Medium: Kesi Meets Painting, Jean Kares Jan 2008

Translation Of Medium: Kesi Meets Painting, Jean Kares

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Pictorial silk tapestry, or kesi, was produced in China beginning in the tenth century as a method of weaving that allowed for designs that were independent of loom controlled patterning.  When Chinese weavers adopted the technique, they expanded its design repertoire from overall patterning to a means of creating pictures, and typically chose similar subjects to those of court paintings, sometimes copying directly from them.  In kesi, the conventions of depiction in painting and tapestry met, and the process of translation from one to the other gave rise to a new mode of expression.  Tapestry method represents a serious challenge …
