A Review Of Negation In Clinical Texts, John D. Kelleher, Brian Mac Namee Jan 2008

A Review Of Negation In Clinical Texts, John D. Kelleher, Brian Mac Namee

Reports

Negation is commonly seen in clinical documents [Chapman et al., 2001a] ”In clinical reports the presence of a term does not necessarily indicate the presence of the clinical condition represented by that term. In fact, many of the most frequently described findings and diseases in discharge summaries, radiology reports, history and physical exams, and other transcribed reports are denied in the patient” [Chapman et al., 2001b, page. 301].

Returning To The Mirror: Reflections On Promoting Constructivism In Three Educational Contexts, Alison Cook-Sather Jan 2008

Returning To The Mirror: Reflections On Promoting Constructivism In Three Educational Contexts, Alison Cook-Sather

Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship

Since the early 1980s educators have argued that reflection is an essential dimension of good pedagogical practice. This discussion of my attempt to support a constructivist approach to learning for three different groups of learners illustrates one effort to engage in such reflection. I analyze several assignments I have designed for differently positioned learners, all within the context of a liberal arts college in northeastern USA. Referring to the assignments I have developed in each context, I analyze the particular kinds of structures, challenges and supports I try to provide to learners, with the goal of surfacing the convictions I …

Gadamerian Hermeneutics And Irony: Between Strauss And Derrida, Robert J. Dostal Jan 2008

Gadamerian Hermeneutics And Irony: Between Strauss And Derrida, Robert J. Dostal

Philosophy Faculty Research and Scholarship

Against the background of Gadamer's hermeneutics of trust, for which the primary concern of the hermeneutical enterprise is the matter under discussion, the Sache, this essay raises the question of Gadamer's treatment of irony. Gadamer and Gadamerians have criticized the hermeneutics of suspicion—a hermeneutics that always looks under the surface of what is said to see what is hidden. This would seem to make irony a problematic aspect of texts and discourse for a Gadamerian hermeneutics. Nowhere in Gadamer's corpus can we find an extensive discussion of irony, but Gadamer does raise the question of irony in a provocative way …

Cross-Cultural Reception In The Absence Of Texts: The Islamic Appropriation Of A Middle Byzantine Rosette Casket, Alicia Walker Jan 2008

Cross-Cultural Reception In The Absence Of Texts: The Islamic Appropriation Of A Middle Byzantine Rosette Casket, Alicia Walker

History of Art Faculty Research and Scholarship

The reception of art and architecture in the Middle Ages is typically studied through the verbal accounts of medieval viewers. This paper explores possibilities for interpreting artistic reception in the absence of texts, through the material record of works of art themselves, specifically, a Byzantine ivory casket altered through the addition of Islamic gilded bronze fixtures. I propose that the transformation of the box expresses a viewer’s cognitive appropriation of the original program, which reconfigured the iconography of the ivory container to accommodate a secular Islamic system of meaning. Rather than representing the changes as misreading or disfigurement of the …

Models And Games: The Difference Between Explanation And Understanding For Lawyers And Ethicists , Jeffrey M. Lipshaw Jan 2008

Models And Games: The Difference Between Explanation And Understanding For Lawyers And Ethicists , Jeffrey M. Lipshaw

Cleveland State Law Review

There is value for lawyers in thinking about constructs of rules as games on one hand, or models on the other. Games are real in a way models are not. Games have "thingness"--an independent reality-and they can be played. Models have "aboutness"-they map onto something else that is real for the sake of simplification and explanation. But models and games are not dichotomous as the preceding claim makes them out to be. Sometimes models look just like games, and sometimes games can serve as models. Because models look like games, we may come to believe they are real-that the models …

A Model For The Integration Of Writing Across Fourth Reading Curriculum, Barbara Mae Truchon Jan 2008

A Model For The Integration Of Writing Across Fourth Reading Curriculum, Barbara Mae Truchon

All Graduate Projects

The evidence from the literature review points to the challenge students of Washington State face today. Reading and writing are the key components in all content areas students are required to learn in today's schools. The challenge for educators is to provide reading and writing instruction that will enable our students to become proficient in the skills they need to pass high stakes assessments like the WASL and become productive members of our ever changing global society. This project presents a model of integrating writing to learn strategies into the reading curriculum. A discussion of the rationale supporting this model …

Teaching Washington State History Through The Arts: A Curricular Guide, Rebekah Norgard Jan 2008

Teaching Washington State History Through The Arts: A Curricular Guide, Rebekah Norgard

All Graduate Projects

Students benefit both academically and nonacademically when a core subject is taught through the arts. The arts allow students to develop cognitively, extend their research skills, define their ability to problem solve, and strengthen their self-image. Personal connections and student attentiveness is increased when classes incorporate the study of the arts. The purpose of this project was to encourage the integration of arts into core subjects and provide a framework and examples of effective arts content infusion as an instructional strategy for use by Washington State History teachers.

The Red Booklet On Feminist Equality. Instead Of A Manifesto, Dana Neacsu Jan 2008

The Red Booklet On Feminist Equality. Instead Of A Manifesto, Dana Neacsu

Law Faculty Publications

If feminist legal theory were to face its legacy today, it would see that its tremendous value rests in its means more than in its ends. True, it has produced palpable results for its promoters domestically. It satisfied many feminists' discrete incremental requests, from Women's History Month to a limited right to bear or beget. While feminism partially satisfied well-identified gendered demands, it has ignored their “base” or frame. I argue that it has ignored basic calls for social justice. As shown here, how gendered demands are satisfied depends on whether basic demands for food and shelter have even been …

Toward A Vibrant Peruvian Middle Class: Effects Of The Peru-United States Free Trade Agreement On Labor Rights, Biodiversity, And Indigenous Populations, Stephen J. Powell, Paola A. Chavarro

UF Law Faculty Publications

Past research confirms that trade and human rights are inextricably linked by trade's effects on poverty, labor, women, indigenous populations, health, and the environment. We identified surprisingly direct linkages between these two vital policies in WTO agreements as well as that regional trade agreements add positive indirect contributions by to rules-based governance through their emphasis on transparency, accountability, and due process by governments, as well as timeliness, inclusive record keeping, and impartiality in the administrative decisional process. The present research examines a particular country and a single trade agreement, Peru and the trade agreement between Peru and the United States. …

Immigration: Deportation And The Pseudo-Science Of Unassimilable Peoples, George A. Martinez Jan 2008

Immigration: Deportation And The Pseudo-Science Of Unassimilable Peoples, George A. Martinez

SMU Law Review

In this essay (Symposium on Immigration Law – Immigrants, Vigilantes, and Immigration Reform: Civil Rights in the 21st Century, SMU Dedman School of Law, 2007), the author seeks to critically examine an important aspect of immigration policy. Recent events, including scholarly analysis and political action, raise the question of whether it is appropriate to direct deportation efforts primarily at Mexican and other Latino immigrants on the ground that such peoples are unassimilable.

In Part II, the author describes how perceptions of Latino unassimilability appear to have led to deportation efforts being directed against Mexicans and Latinos. In Part III, he …

The Effects Of The Partnerships In Comprehensive Literacy Model In Narrowing The Achievement Gap For First Graders In A High Poverty School, Barbara M. Head Jan 2008

The Effects Of The Partnerships In Comprehensive Literacy Model In Narrowing The Achievement Gap For First Graders In A High Poverty School, Barbara M. Head

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of the Partnerships in Comprehensive Literacy (PCL) school improvement model in narrowing the achievement gap for first graders in a high poverty school over a three-year period. The study compared the academic progress of first grade students from a PCL high poverty school with first grade students from a non-PCL high poverty school. A cross sectional study with quantitative data, analyzed with a parametric statistical test (ANOVA), was used to evaluate these factors. The research objectives focused on studying the effects of the Partnerships in Comprehensive Literacy (PCL) model in …

A Descriptive Study Of Learning Styles And Multiple Intelligences On Student Creativity Within The Art Classroom, Sharon Boyd-Struthers Jan 2008

A Descriptive Study Of Learning Styles And Multiple Intelligences On Student Creativity Within The Art Classroom, Sharon Boyd-Struthers

Theses and Dissertations

In 2004, a law was enacted in Arkansas that provided art and music to all elementary children, grades first through sixth. Two years after the preliminary thesis began all district elementary schools added certified art teachers. At the end of the 2007/08 school year, these teachers will have been instructing for three years. In 2008/09, a full four years of instructional impact will be assessable through the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT) testing scores of second grade students. This thesis considers whether a teacher's receptiveness to student learning differences or teacher methodology affects the level of creativity by either …

From Little Rock To Seattle And Louisville: Is "All Deliberate Speed" Stuck In Reverse?, Charles J. Ogletree Jr., Susan Eaton

University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review

More than 50 years after Brown v. Board of Education, in Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School District, the Supreme Court issued a much anticipated, sharply divided opinion concerning the conscious use of a student’s "race" in plans to desegregate now de facto segregated public schools. The Court found unconstitutional the race-inclusive methods used by the Seattle and Louisville public school officials who were attempting to create racially integrated schools.

In order to understand the full impact of the Supreme Court’s recent decisions regarding school desegregation, an analysis of the Seattle and Louisville plans and the Court’s reasoning …

"A Shplit Ticket, Half Irish, Half Chinay": Representations Of Mixed-Race And Hybridity In The Turn-Of-The-Century Theater, Gregory T. Carter Jan 2008

"A Shplit Ticket, Half Irish, Half Chinay": Representations Of Mixed-Race And Hybridity In The Turn-Of-The-Century Theater, Gregory T. Carter

Ethnic Studies Review

Charles Townsend's 1889 adaptation of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin features white actors playing light- and dark-skinned African-American characters, changing degrees of make-up as the script, stage business, or number of available players demands. Thomas Denison's stage directions to his 1895 play, Patsy O'Wang, an Irish Farce with a Chinese Mix-Up, stipulates that the alternation of the half -Chinese, half-Irish cook between his two ethnic personas is "key to this capital farce," and that a comedie use of the Chinese dialect is central to this. The Geezer (c. 1896), Joseph Herbert's spoof of the popular musical, The Geisha, features …

Political Party And Senatorial Succession: A Response To Vikram Amar On How Best To Interpret The Seventeenth Amendment, Sanford Levinson Jan 2008

Political Party And Senatorial Succession: A Response To Vikram Amar On How Best To Interpret The Seventeenth Amendment, Sanford Levinson

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

This Article explores the author's fundamental disagreement with Vikram Amar's argument as to the meaning of the Seventeenth Amendment. Amar's argument is "a brilliant explication of various trees that misses the reality of the surrounding forest." The author contrasts my response to this article to another article that several years ago definitively demonstrated the unconstitutionality of the current Succession in Office Act (the Act) inasmuch as it makes the Speaker of the House (and then the president pro tempore of the Senate) next in line to the vice president to fill any vacancies in the Oval Office. Both that article …

Presidential Power In Comparative Perspective: The Puzzling Persistence Of Imperial Presidency In Post-Authoritarian Africa, H. Kwasi Prempeh Jan 2008

Presidential Power In Comparative Perspective: The Puzzling Persistence Of Imperial Presidency In Post-Authoritarian Africa, H. Kwasi Prempeh

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

This Article focuses on the comparative dimension of a phenomenon that is already well known to U.S. constitutional discourse: the imperial presidency. While U.S. constitutional scholars have shown a great deal of interest in new constitutional courts in the world's newest democracies, the contemporaneous phenomenon of persistent imperial presidency in Africa has been largely ignored. Although relatively little attention has been paid to it in comparative constitutional discourses, Africa has witnessed since 1990 a dramatic transition to democratic rule that has resulted in the toppling of many of the region's long-reining autocrats and the installation of new counter-authoritarian constitutions. However, …
