A Multivariate Study Of Disproportionality In Special Education, Stacey L. Steggert Jan 2008

A Multivariate Study Of Disproportionality In Special Education, Stacey L. Steggert

ETD Archive

The disproportionate representation of ethnically and culturally diverse students in special education has been the topic of significant research and policy debate for the last forty years. Disproportionality occurs when the proportion of students of a specific ethnic group in a disability category is greater or less than the proportion of Caucasian students in the same disability category. The prevailing logic asserts that disproportionality is the result of ethnically and culturally diverse students being differentially affected by the deleterious effects of poverty. Despite considerable research regarding the prevalence of overrepresentation, few studies have been undertaken to examine the relationship between …

An Analysis Of "The Real," As Reflected In Conrad's Heart Of Darkness, Beverly Rose Joyce Jan 2008

An Analysis Of "The Real," As Reflected In Conrad's Heart Of Darkness, Beverly Rose Joyce

ETD Archive

Heart of Darkness, as a framed narrative, questions perception and authenticity. It is difficult to discern Marlow's individual voice, for it is buried within a layering of narration. Critics ascribe the words of the text to Marlow, claiming he is the one who, in Achebe's words, dehumanizes Africans. Yet, the quotation marks suggest otherwise. Perception is relevant to an analysis of Heart of Darkness, for it is unclear whose point of view constructs the text, that of Kurtz, Marlow, or the frame narrator. Since the narrative is likely composed of multiple perspectives, it is difficult to determine whose reality it …

Dialogic Sss Inquiry-Based Model For Language Teacher Preparation, Martine Pellerin, Sylvie Roy Jan 2008

Dialogic Sss Inquiry-Based Model For Language Teacher Preparation, Martine Pellerin, Sylvie Roy

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

This article introduces the dialogic SSS inquiry-based n:.odel developed by the authors as a theoretical and methodological framework for language teacher preparation. The dialogic SSS inquiry-based model suggests that three Ss-second language acquisition (SLA) theories, sociocultural theories regarding SLA, and sociolinguistic theories-should make up the content knowledge in language teacher preparation. However, the content knowledge proposed here is not to be perceived_ as static knowledge. Instead, future language teachers will engage through critical reflection in the exploration of each of these fields in order to gain greater understanding regarding the teaching and learning of a second or additional language. Because …

Guided Writing Lessons: Second-Grade Students’ Development Of Strategic Behavior, Sharon A. Gibson Jan 2008

Guided Writing Lessons: Second-Grade Students’ Development Of Strategic Behavior, Sharon A. Gibson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study describes intra-individual change in strategic behavior of five second-grade students during three months of guided writing instruction for informational text. Data sources included sequential coding of writing behavior from videotaped writing events and analytic assessment of writing products. Students’ development of self-scaffolding supported orchestration of attention across word, sentence, and text levels while writing was studied. Participants encountered challenges in the following linguistic resources: textual organization, degree of explicitness, and presentation of details through appropriate sentence structures.

Politics And Culture At The Jacobean Court: The Role Of Queen Anna Of Denmark, Courtney Erin Thomas Jan 2008

Politics And Culture At The Jacobean Court: The Role Of Queen Anna Of Denmark, Courtney Erin Thomas

Quidditas

Until recently, analyses of the Jacobean court marginalized the important role played by James I and VI’s queen consort, Anna of Denmark. While historians and literary critics now acknowledge that Anna was a key player in patronage networks and artistic circles at the time, the extent of her political involvement remains largely unexplored in favor of portraying her solely as a cultural figure. This essay seeks to examine the connections between Anna’s cultural and political activities and suggests that, by viewing Anna’s involvements thorough a dichotomous lens as being either political or cultural, a truly textured and nuanced understanding of …

Culture, Personal Autonomy And Individualism: Their Relationships And Implications For Personal Growth And Well-Being, Valery I. Chirkov Jan 2008

Culture, Personal Autonomy And Individualism: Their Relationships And Implications For Personal Growth And Well-Being, Valery I. Chirkov

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The recent research and theorizing in cross-cultural social psychology have raised several interesting and conceptually important issues about the role of autonomy, selfdetermination and freedom of choice in different cultures and regarding the role of these factors in human functioning within various cultural contexts (Ahuvia, 2001; Inghilleri, 1999; Iyengar & DeVoe, 2003; Kagitcibasi, 2003, 2005; Markus & Kitayama, 2003; Miller, 2003; Rychlak, 2003; Schwartz, 2000). The following are among the key questions that have been raised: What is the nature and role of autonomy in the behavior of people from different cultures? Is autonomy’s positive influence only a prerogative of …

Nitrogen In The Environment: Chapter 22. New Policy Directions, A.P. Manale

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Advances in linking the science of ecology with economics and the development of agri-environmental modeling systems coupled with new information technology suggest new public policy approaches that reward agricultural producers for providing ecological services. An incentive-based ecosystem approach that identifies and quantifies an array of environmental services that can be provided by agricultural land, and then facilitates the development of markets in these services can protect environmental quality while improving farm income. Sustainability can be achieved whereby economic needs of society are integrated into environmental protection. Before presenting new agricultural policy approaches for improving environmental quality and, in particular, managing …

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Complexity and uncertainty have become critical considerations for environmental modelling applications, opening ne\v avenues for the use and development of models. Increasingly l110dels are being recognized as essential tools to learn, coml11unicate, explore and resolve the particulars of complex environmental problems (Sterman, 2002; Van den Belt, 2(04). However, this shift in the way in which models have been used has not always been accompanied by a concomitant shift in the way in which models have been conceived and implemented. Too often, models were conceived and built as predictive devices, aimed at capturing single, best, objective explanations. Considerations of uncertainty were …

Pre-Service Teachers' Confidence In Teaching Reading Acquisition Skills To Struggling Readers And Readers In General, Drue E. Narkon Ph.D., Rhonda S. Black Jan 2008

Pre-Service Teachers' Confidence In Teaching Reading Acquisition Skills To Struggling Readers And Readers In General, Drue E. Narkon Ph.D., Rhonda S. Black

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

Thirty-one final semester undergraduate, dual preparation, pre-service students at a Pacific university completed a survey regarding their confidence in teaching reading acquisition skills to early elementary (Kindergarten through third grade) struggling readers and readers in general. The 36-item survey included open-ended and forced choice Likert-type rating scale items. We examined participants’ perceptions regarding their confidence in teaching reading and the degree to which numerous factors contributed to their levels of confidence. It appeared that this particular group of pre-service teachers was more confident in their ability to teach reading to all students, those who struggle and those who do not, …

The Public Health Implications Of Trafficking, Tami Ashbridge Jan 2008

The Public Health Implications Of Trafficking, Tami Ashbridge

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Trafficking in human beings is a serious and complex human rights issue. Trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation has grave public health implications. The vulnerability of women and children increases their risk of becoming victims of trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation. Review of the literature on this subject demonstrates a direct link between the trafficking of women and children for sexual exploitation and the prevalence of HIV/AIDS, STIs and Reproductive/Gynecological Issues, Mental Health, Violence, Abuse and Social Issues. This review supports the concept of human trafficking as a serious public health issue and the need for improved …

Assessment Practices In Residential Treatment Facilities For Juvenile Offenders, Liz Marciniak, Diane T. Marsh Jan 2008

Assessment Practices In Residential Treatment Facilities For Juvenile Offenders, Liz Marciniak, Diane T. Marsh

Contemporary Issues in Juvenile Justice

Given the high prevalence of mental disorders among juvenile offenders, as well as the link between untreated disorders and delinquent behavior, there is a critical need for standardized, cost-effective, and clinically effective procedures to identify youth with mental health problems. Surveys were sent to staff in juvenile residential facilities throughout Pennsylvania to examine statewide assessment practices, including the background and training of staff, the standard intake procedures used in these facilities, and the role of assessment in treatment planning. Although results provide evidence of some common statewide assess-ment practices, there was significant variability in the use of specific procedures. Suggestions …

Thinking About Fairness & Achieving Balance In Mediation, Sarah E. Burns Jan 2008

Thinking About Fairness & Achieving Balance In Mediation, Sarah E. Burns

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Article identifies five sources of bias present in mediation practice: (1) categorization, (2) attribution, (3) metaphorical expression, (4) norming, and (5) framing. For each of these "cognitive efficiencies," which contribute to bias in mediation, the author provides practice recommendations. Finally, the author suggests that the Article be read as a proposal for further thought and inquiry to improve the fairness of mediators.

Approximate Owl-Reasoning With Screech, Tuvshintur Tserendorj, Sebastian Rudolph, Markus Krotzsch, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Applications of expressive ontology reasoning for the Semantic Web require scalable algorithms for deducing implicit knowledge from explicitly given knowledge bases. Besides the development of more effi- cient such algorithms, awareness is rising that approximate reasoning solutions will be helpful and needed for certain application domains. In this paper, we present a comprehensive overview of the Screech approach to approximate reasoning with OWL ontologies, which is based on the KAON2 algorithms, facilitating a compilation of OWL DL TBoxes into Datalog, which is tractable in terms of data complexity. We present three different instantiations of the Screech approach, and report on …

Racial Migrations, Tucker Culbertson Jan 2008

Racial Migrations, Tucker Culbertson

St. Thomas Law Review

The following three articles by Dominique Legros, Robert Koulish, and Cesar Cuauhtémoc Garcia Hernández concern laws, politics, and philosophies involving transnational migration. Individually and in sum, these articles productively engage with the radical multidimensionality of both racial identity and racial governance. In this introduction, I will briefly describe the articles and offer very few comments thereon, most of which emphasize what I believe to be the articles most important cumulative contribution regarding the complexity and centrality of race within forces and discourses of citizenship, territory, sovereignty, and nationality. Hence, the title of this introduction, which is intended to suggest both …

Foreword Latcrit Xii - The Critical Locality And The Processes Of Community, Charles R.P. Pouncy

St. Thomas Law Review

The foreword to each annual LatCrit Conference Symposium is a document that generally attempts to situate the current Symposium within the parameters of LatCrit and outsider jurisprudence discourse. In addition to examining the role that the current Symposium plays in the elaboration of LatCrit theory and praxis, part of the task of the foreword calls for reflection on the evolution of the LatCrit project and its future development. This foreword will examine the relationship of the Symposium contributions to the themes of LatCrit XII and to the perennial issues that LatCrit conferences and theory attempt to engage. This foreword, however, …

Religious Reparations From The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade: Forming Demons, Cults, And Zombies To Justify Black Enslavement, Danielle Boaz Jan 2008

Religious Reparations From The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade: Forming Demons, Cults, And Zombies To Justify Black Enslavement, Danielle Boaz

St. Thomas Law Review

When religion is discussed in a legal setting, the topic is typically an examination of whether a law is either dealing with religions equally or staying out of religious affairs. The Western world has concerned itself with issues such as prayer in school, references to God on currency, religious attire in classrooms, and biblical texts in courthouses. These problems deal with the negative obligations of a state to not impose a religion on its people. The examination found in this article, however, will consider religious freedom from a different perspective. It will analyze freedom of religion in terms of the …

An Algorithm For Summarizing Strategies Identification, N. Idris, B. Mohd Sapiyan, R. Abdullah Jan 2008

An Algorithm For Summarizing Strategies Identification, N. Idris, B. Mohd Sapiyan, R. Abdullah

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Summarizing is a process of identifying important information from a text. Experts employ several important strategies to produce good summaries. Unfortunately, students do not acquire the summarization skills. Thus, this paper proposed an algorithm to identify the summarizing strategies employed by students using summary sentence decomposition. The strategies used by experts are identified and translated into a set of heuristic rules where the algorithm is developed based on the heuristic rules.

Balancing, The Global And The Local Judicial Balancing As A Problematic Topic In Comparative (Constitutional) Law, Jacco Bomhoff Jan 2008

Balancing, The Global And The Local Judicial Balancing As A Problematic Topic In Comparative (Constitutional) Law, Jacco Bomhoff

UC Law SF International Law Review

Courts in Europe, North America and elsewhere frequently use the language of "balancing" when dealing with fundamental rights cases. In addition, judges and scholars increasingly often rely on the image of balancing, or "weighing," to draw (self-)portraits of legal cultures and to frame contrasts and similarities between legal orders. This article argues that this form of discourse occupies a particularly problematic position as a topic of comparative constitutional law, and this for two primary reasons.

First, while balancing references, as legal arguments, function primarily to justify the exercise of judicial power in particular - local - settings, their legitimizing force …

Nt 511x The Gospel Of Mark, David Loren Thompson

Course Description This course introduces you to methodical, inductive Bible study and to the message and significance of the Gospel of Mark, with emphasis upon understanding biblical books as wholes. By the study of Mark’s Gospel itself, the course helps you gain and hone skills necessary for using inductive Scripture study in life and ministry. When I took a similar course here at Asbury it changed forever my approach to Scripture study. That class gave me tools without which I would not want to attempt Christian ministry. This is not my first experience teaching NT(IBS)511 as an ExL class. Even …
