Emmanuel "God With Us" In Suffering, E. Douglas William Jr. Jan 2008

Emmanuel "God With Us" In Suffering, E. Douglas William Jr.

Doctor of Ministry

This paper proposes a response the following question: What is the best approach for ministers to use in ministry to the suffering? The paper examines the question in light of culture in the United States in the twenty-first century. Many people face a crisis in their faith due to a misconception that God allows suffering to happen to good people. Three covenantal theories: limited retribution, telic vindication, and theocentric consolation, appear throughout the Old and New Testaments and in the history of the Church. This paper proposes theocentric consolation as the proper paradigm for ministry to those who suffer. Chapter …

A Fresh Look At Director "Independence": Mutual Fund Fee Litigation And Gartenberg At Twenty-Five, Lyman P.Q. Johnson Jan 2008

A Fresh Look At Director "Independence": Mutual Fund Fee Litigation And Gartenberg At Twenty-Five, Lyman P.Q. Johnson

Scholarly Articles

This article contrasts how a robust conception of director independence plays a central role in the corporate law world while, in the mutual fund industry, independence is a shrunken conception playing only a marginal role. Over the last twenty-five years, director independence in corporate law has gained wide acceptance as being desirable and it has become a critical component of fiduciary duty analysis. Within the mutual fund industry, however, independence remains fiercely contested. The more obvious battle over independence has occurred in response to the Securities and Exchange Commission's ("SEC's") rulemaking effort to alter the standard for granting certain regulatory …

The Politics Of Persuasion Versus The Construction Of Alternative Communities: Zines In The Writing Classroom, Aneil Rallin, Ian Barnard Jan 2008

The Politics Of Persuasion Versus The Construction Of Alternative Communities: Zines In The Writing Classroom, Aneil Rallin, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Articles and Research

We discuss how studying and creating zines in our composition classes allows our students to negotiate and explore the complexities of writing without the compulsions of many of the politically problematic commonplaces of composition pedagogy. We use zines to examine the unique ways in which their rhetorical devices address conflicts around questions of audience and diversity, as well as the particular questions that the zines raise about the politics of persuasion, our own writing practices, writing strategies that the zines suggest to us, and the construction of alternative communities.

E-Poetry: Between Image And Performance -- A Cultural Analysis, Jan Baetens, Jan Van Looy Jan 2008

E-Poetry: Between Image And Performance -- A Cultural Analysis, Jan Baetens, Jan Van Looy

The Journal of e-Media Studies

By establishing an opposition between two ways of studying e-poetry: the patrimonial stance, which historicizes and canonizes a corpus and the cultural stance, which discusses e-poetry in its social context, the article makes a plea for a broad, cultural approach to electronic reading and writing. This approach defines e-poetry in terms of performance, placing a strong emphasis on the mediated and often networked environment in which e-poetry creation and reception take place. The close reading of two examples by Pierre Alferi and Eric Sadin, two prominent authors of electronic literature in France, further illustrates the idea of writing and reading …

Living With Stories, William Schneider

All USU Press Publications

In essays about communities as varied as Alaskan Native, East Indian, Palestinian, Mexican, and African American, oral historians, folklorists, and anthropologists look at how traditional and historical oral narratives live through re-tellings, gaining meaning and significance in repeated performances, from varying contexts, through cultural and historical knowing, and due to tellers' consciousness of their audiences.

Out Of Style: Reanimating Stylistic Study In Composition And Rhetoric, Paul Butler Jan 2008

Out Of Style: Reanimating Stylistic Study In Composition And Rhetoric, Paul Butler

All USU Press Publications

Paul Butler applauds the emerging interest in the study of style among compositionists, arguing that the loss of stylistics from composition in recent decades left it alive only in the popular imagination as a set of grammar conventions. Butler's goal in Out of Style is to articulate style as a vital and productive source of invention, and to redefine its importance for current research, theory, and pedagogy. In so doing, he offers an important revisionist history of the field by reading it specifically through the canon of style. In addition, Butler argues that it is through style that scholars in …

Representations: Doing Asian American Rhetoric, Luming Mao, Morris Young Jan 2008

Representations: Doing Asian American Rhetoric, Luming Mao, Morris Young

All USU Press Publications

Despite tremendous growth in attention to and scholarship about Asian Americans and their cultural work, little research has emerged that focuses directly on Asian American rhetoric. Representations: Doing Asian American Rhetoric addresses this need by examining the systematic, effective use of symbolic resources by Asians and Asian Americans in social, cultural, and political contexts. Such rhetoric challenges, disrupts, and transforms the dominant European American rhetoric and it commands a sense of unity or collective identity. However, such rhetoric also embodies internal differences and even contradictions, as each specific communicative situation is informed and inflected by particularizing contexts, by different relations …

'This Text Deletes Itself’: Traumatic Memory And Space-Time In Zoe Wicomb’S David’S Story, Shane Graham Jan 2008

'This Text Deletes Itself’: Traumatic Memory And Space-Time In Zoe Wicomb’S David’S Story, Shane Graham

English Faculty Publications

The group of cultural and literary theorists whom I would loosely categorize as practitioners of “trauma theory”–including, most notably, Cathy Caruth, Shoshana Felman, Dori Laub, and Dominick LaCapra–share several assumptions. Their ideas all derive to a large extent from Freudian conceptions of memory and trauma, and they all emphasize the temporal aspects of psychic trauma: Caruth, for instance, describes the traumatic encounter as “a break in the mind’s experience of time” (61). Implicit in this conception of trauma, as well, is the assumption that trauma is an individual and private phenomenon. And they all suggest, moreover, that trauma manifests itself …

The Creation Of Tools And Models To Characterize And Quantify User-Centered Design Considerations In Product And System Developm, Katherine Meza

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ease of use differentiates products in a highly competitive market place. It also brings an added value that culminates in a higher degree of customer satisfaction, repeated business, increased sales, and higher revenue. User-centered design is a strategic asset that companies can use to improve their customer relationships by learning more about their customers, and increase their sales. In today's economy, the measurement of intangible assets such as user experience has become a major need for industries because of the relationship between user-centered design and organizational benefits such as customer loyalty. As companies realize that the inclusion of user-centered design …

Resistance In Rundi Oral Literature: The Case Of Emmanuel Nkeeshimaana’S Songs Imiduri, Emmanuel Nkurunziza Jan 2008

Resistance In Rundi Oral Literature: The Case Of Emmanuel Nkeeshimaana’S Songs Imiduri, Emmanuel Nkurunziza

Digitized Theses

Umudúri is a Rundi oral genre that normally features laudatory texts; however, in Emmanuel Nkeeshimáana’s songs, it is resistance to the iniquities generated by colonial and postcolonial powers that predominates. Engaging Albert Lord’s approach to sung poetry, which is based on formulas and themes, this study addresses the place of umudúri in oral literature, focusing on the performance and enunciation. By translating Emmanuel Nkeeshimaana’s texts, basing on André Lefévère’s poetic and cross-cultural translation theory, it proves the limitations to the rendering of Emmanuel Nkeeshimaana’s resistance message. Thus, the study suggests ways for a fuller grasp of the resistance nature of …

Three Dimensional And Energy Dissipation Studies Of Hydraulic Jumps, Hesham Kotb Metwaliy Zare Jan 2008

Three Dimensional And Energy Dissipation Studies Of Hydraulic Jumps, Hesham Kotb Metwaliy Zare

Digitized Theses

The velocity field of a three dimensional submerged hydraulic jump at a sudden horizontal expansion was investigated. The study has indicated that the jump consisted of a central jet-like flow, close to the channel bottom, surrounded by vertical and horizontal circulations (rollers). The circulation was predominantly in vertical planes in the channel central region of the flow and in horizontal planes close to the walls. Vertical and horizontal profiles of stream-wise velocity characterized the 3D roller with two lengthscales. The strength of the roller was stronger close to the walls than at the centerline of the jump. A novel perforated …

Reconstructive And Natural Language Applications Of Linguistic Analysis, Aaron Barth Jan 2008

Reconstructive And Natural Language Applications Of Linguistic Analysis, Aaron Barth

Digitized Theses

Tliis dissertation examines the nature and role of linguistic analysis as it lias been practiced within contemporary analytic philosophy. Its major theme centers on an examination of the clash between empirical or naturalist approaches to the study of language, and non-empirical, “conceptual,” or philosophical ones. There are three conflicts of this sort tlιat I examine. The first is the debate between Strawson and Russell over tlιe nature of definite descriptions. The second is the debate between Quine and Carnap regarding the concept of analyticity, and the third is the position staked out by a leading member of The New Pliilosophy …

Iranian University Students’ Perceptions Of Their Social Interactions In Canada, Mohsen Mahmoudi

Digitized Theses

This study investigated the dynamics of adult Iranians’ social interactions in Canada. The purpose was to identify social and cultural factors that improve or block speaking opportunities for adult Iranian immigrants. Eight Iranians, five men and three women, who had spent their adulthood in Iran, accepted invitations to participate in this study. They were interviewed for their processes of English language learning and their social interactions in Canada. The interviews were conceptualized for themes using the principles of grounded theory methodology. The analysis demonstrated that adult Iranians faced various challenges in their social interactions in Canada. Over-monitoring of grammar and …

Espousing Interactions And Fielding Reactions: Addressing Laypeople's Beliefs About Genetic Determinism, David S. Moore Jan 2008

Espousing Interactions And Fielding Reactions: Addressing Laypeople's Beliefs About Genetic Determinism, David S. Moore

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Although biologists and philosophers of science generally agree that genes cannot determine the forms of biological and psychological traits, students, journalists, politicians, and other members of the general public nonetheless continue to embrace genetic determinism. This article identifies some of the concerns typically raised by individuals when they first encounter the systems perspective that biologists and philosophers of science now favor over genetic determinism, and uses arguments informed by that perspective to address those concerns. No definitive statements can yet be made about why genetic determinism has proven so resilient in the face of empirical evidence pointing up its deficiencies, …

Historical Tidbits, The Shoah, And The Teaching Of Mathematics, Wolff-Michael Roth Jan 2008

Historical Tidbits, The Shoah, And The Teaching Of Mathematics, Wolff-Michael Roth

The Mathematics Enthusiast

In this extended essay, I use cultural-historical activity theory to look at the questions Theodore Eisenberg raises about the inclusion of historical facts, both historical tidbits and ethically questionable tendencies and horrific actions (the Shoah), in the teaching of mathematics. I conclude by suggesting that the ultimate answer has to be one that involves a decision, which means that an answer cannot be provided a priori or be determined by any antecedent. Deciding to include this or that in a mathematical curriculum is an ethical act.

Autoethnography As Constructionist Project, Laura L. Ellingson, Carolyn Ellis Jan 2008

Autoethnography As Constructionist Project, Laura L. Ellingson, Carolyn Ellis

Gender and Sexuality Studies

In this chapter, we explore autoethnography as a social constructionist project. We want to resist the tendency to dichotomize and instead explore how autoethnography makes connections between seemingly polar opposites. Though we see it as a sign of progress that authors desire to tease out differences in autoethnographic projects, we argue that concentrating on dichotomies is counterproductive, given that autoethnography by definition operates as a bridge, connecting autobiography and ethnography in order to study the intersection of self and others, self and culture.

After further detailing in this chapter the limits of dichotomous thinking, we sketch the meanings and goals …

Analogical Reasoning In The Engineering Design Process And Technology Education Applications, Jenny Daugherty, Nathan Mentzer Jan 2008

Analogical Reasoning In The Engineering Design Process And Technology Education Applications, Jenny Daugherty, Nathan Mentzer

Publications

This synthesis paper discusses the research exploring analogical reasoning, the role of analogies in the engineering design process, and educational applications for analogical reasoning. Researchers have discovered that analogical reasoning is often a fundamental cognitive tool in design problem solving. Regarding the possible role of analogical reasoning in the context of technology education; analogies may be a useful tool to develop student’s design skills, teach abstract or complex concepts, and build students’ analogical reasoning skills for general problem solving. The positive and negative educational implications of analogical reasoning being explored by researchers are also discussed.

Old Beginnings: The Re-Inscription Of Masculine Domination At The New Millennium In Margaret Atwood's Oryx And Crake, Lacie M. Semenovich Jan 2008

Old Beginnings: The Re-Inscription Of Masculine Domination At The New Millennium In Margaret Atwood's Oryx And Crake, Lacie M. Semenovich

ETD Archive

This essay analyzes the role of masculine domination in the twenty-first century as portrayed in Margaret Atwood's 2003 novel of speculative fiction, Oryx and Crake. I argue that Atwood's uncharacteristic choice of male primary characters highlights the masculine/feminine and the human/nature binaries in order to critique the destructiveness of a continued masculine domination of nature and the feminine. I utilize Donna Haraway's theory of speculative fiction as an alternative space in which we can begin to explore new relationships with nature to critique Atwood's novel. In my first chapter, I posit that Atwood utilizes Judeo-Christian allusions to situate the novel …

Sex, Gender, And Androgyny In Virginia Woolf's Mock-Biographies "Friendships Gallery" And Orlando, Sarah Hastings Jan 2008

Sex, Gender, And Androgyny In Virginia Woolf's Mock-Biographies "Friendships Gallery" And Orlando, Sarah Hastings

ETD Archive

This is an examination of sex, gender, and androgyny in Virginia Woolf́⁰₉s ́⁰₋Friendships Gallerý⁰₊ and Orlando. These texts, written twenty years apart, highlight Woolf́⁰₉s development as a feminist who seeks to obliterate the assumed sex and gender binary. She accomplishes this through a mock biography format. Her first attempt highlights the androgynous nature of the main character Violet, whereas in Orlando her message of the constrictive nature of an assumed link between sex and gender is far more emphatically proven though the utilization of the titular character undergoing a biological sex change that ultimately leaves his/her gender unaffected

Road Surface Condition Detection And Identification And Vehicle Anti-Skid Control, Maosheng Ye Jan 2008

Road Surface Condition Detection And Identification And Vehicle Anti-Skid Control, Maosheng Ye

ETD Archive

Road surface condition is greatly dependent on the surface's friction coefficient. The abrupt change of the coefficient results in variation of wheel slip which likely leads to vehicle instability. Vehicle steering model and the dynamic equations for four-wheel drive vehicle is developed. A new observer, called Extended State Observer (ESO) is used to estimate the longitudinal velocity, lateral velocity and yaw rate, and more importantly an additional quantity known as system dynamics. A trained neural network was employed to help determine the friction coefficient. Fuzzy logic was employed to quickly detect the change of road surface condition and further classify …
