The Value Of Intraoperative Examination Of Axillary Sentinel Nodes In Carcinoma Of The Breast., Gordon F. Schwartz, Lauren S. Krill, Juan P. Palazzo, Abhijit Dasgupta Nov 2008

The Value Of Intraoperative Examination Of Axillary Sentinel Nodes In Carcinoma Of The Breast., Gordon F. Schwartz, Lauren S. Krill, Juan P. Palazzo, Abhijit Dasgupta

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Abstract Axillary sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) has become the standard of care for T1-2, N-0, M-0 carcinoma of the breast. However, the accuracy of frozen section in the intra-operative examination of sentinel nodes (SN) remains controversial. The senior author has championed the use of the intraoperative examination of SN by frozen section ex-amination from the inception of its use, and we present our experience with frozen section examination of SN, confirming that this technique is both practical and highly accurate. Materials & Methods: Between 2000 and 2007, 236 SLNB procedures were performed that were read as “fro-zen section negative.” …

Dynamic Incorporation Of Foreign Law, Michael C. Dorf Nov 2008

Dynamic Incorporation Of Foreign Law, Michael C. Dorf

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Lawmaking bodies in one polity sometimes incorporate the law of another polity “dynamically,” so that when the law of the foreign jurisdiction changes, the law of the incorporating jurisdiction changes automatically. Dynamic incorporation can save lawmaking costs, lead to better legal rules and standards, and solve collective action problems. Thus, the phenomenon is widespread. However, dynamic incorporation delegates lawmaking power. Further, as the formal and practical barriers to revocation of the act of dynamic incorporation become higher, that act comes closer to a cession of sovereignty, and for democratic polities, such sessions entail a democratic loss. Accordingly, dynamic incorporation of …

Neuroimaging And Recovery Of Language In Aphasia, Cynthia K. Thompson, Dirk B. Den Ouden Nov 2008

Neuroimaging And Recovery Of Language In Aphasia, Cynthia K. Thompson, Dirk B. Den Ouden

Faculty Publications

The use of functional neuroimaging techniques has advanced what is known about the neural mechanisms used to support language processing in aphasia resulting from brain damage. This paper highlights recent findings derived from neuroimaging studies focused on neuroplasticity of language networks, the role of the left and right hemispheres in this process, and studies examining how treatment affects the neurobiology of recovery. We point out variability across studies as well as factors related to this variability, and we emphasize challenges that remain for research.

Reconstructing The Dormant Commerce Clause Doctrine, Brannon P. Denning Nov 2008

Reconstructing The Dormant Commerce Clause Doctrine, Brannon P. Denning

William & Mary Law Review

In this Article, I argue that the alleged incoherence and unpredictability of the dormant Commerce Clause doctrine (DCCD) is rooted in the Supreme Court's search, through the years, for a stable set of rules enabling it to distinguish permissible from impermissible state regulations of interstate commerce and commercial actors. Its lack of success, the Article argues, is due in large part to the Court's inability to settle on the constitutional command the doctrine was to enforce. Historically, the Court would promulgate a set of rules, apply them for a time, then alter or modify them as the rules became unsatisfactory. …

Sensation Seeking And Visual Selective Attention In Adults With Hiv/Aids, David J. Hardy, Steven A. Castellon, Charles H. Hinkin, Andrew J. Levine, Mona N. Lam Nov 2008

Sensation Seeking And Visual Selective Attention In Adults With Hiv/Aids, David J. Hardy, Steven A. Castellon, Charles H. Hinkin, Andrew J. Levine, Mona N. Lam

Psychological Science Faculty Works

The association between sensation seeking and visual selective attention was examined in 31 adults with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Sensation seeking was measured with Zuckerman’s Sensation Seeking Scale Form V (SSS-V). Selective attention was assessed with a perceptual span task, where a target letter-character must be identified in a quickly presented array of nontarget letter-characters. As predicted, sensation seeking was strongly associated (R2 = .229) with perceptual span performance in the array size 12 condition, where selective attention demands were greatest, but not in the easier conditions. The Disinhibition, Boredom Susceptibility, and Experience Seeking subscales of the …

Procrastination, Deadlines, And Statutes Of Limitation, Andrew J. Wistrich Nov 2008

Procrastination, Deadlines, And Statutes Of Limitation, Andrew J. Wistrich

William & Mary Law Review

Statutes of limitation are deadlines. Although psychologists have discovered a great deal about how people respond to deadlines during the past thirty years, the basic structure of statutes of limitation has not changed since at least 1623. This Article explores the question of whether the received model of statutes of limitation remains optimal in light of what we now know about procrastination, the planning fallacy, loss aversion, intertemporal discounting, the student syndrome, and other features of human cognition. It concludes by suggesting a more modern approach to statutes of limitation that is based on a better understanding of how people …

METHODOLOGY: Seven methods, describing anteroposterior jaw relationships (A-B plane, ANB, Wits, AXB, AF-BF, FABA and Beta angle) were measured on the lateral cephalographs of 85 patients. Correlation analysis, using Cramer's V-test, was performed to determine the possible agreement between the pair of analyses.

RESULTS: The mean age of the sample, comprising 35 males and …

Mixed Methods Approaches In Family Science Research, Vicki L. Plano Clark, Catherine Huddleston-Casas, Susan Churchill, Denise O'Neil Green, Amanda Garrett Nov 2008

Mixed Methods Approaches In Family Science Research, Vicki L. Plano Clark, Catherine Huddleston-Casas, Susan Churchill, Denise O'Neil Green, Amanda Garrett

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

The complex phenomena of interest to family scientists require the use of quantitative and qualitative approaches. Researchers across the social sciences are now turning to mixed methods designs that combine these two approaches. Mixed methods research has great promise for addressing family science topics, but only if researchers under¬stand the design options and procedures that accompany this methodological choice. Discussions of mixed methods in the family science literature are difficult to locate, and little has been written about how family scientists apply this approach in practice. This article presents an overview of mixed methods research, including its definition, terminology, and …
