In Vitro Evaluation Of Antibacterial Activity Using Crude Extracts Of Catharanthus Roseus L. (G.) Don., S. Ramya Et Al.

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Catharanthus roseus popularly known as Madagascar periwinkle is a potential source for anti-leukemic alkaloids. The present study aims to evaluate the possibility for the presence of novel bio-active compounds against pathogenic bacteria, as most of the pathogens develop drug resistance against commonly used antibiotics. To determine antibacterial activity, crude extracts from different parts of C. roseus were tested against bacterial strains of clinical significance. Extraction of bio-active principles in appropriate solvent was followed by evaluation of antibacterial activity by disc diffusion assay against selected bacterial stains. Data depicts that the pattern of inhibition largely depends upon extraction procedure, plant part, …

Elusive Foreign Compact, The, Duncan B. Hollis Nov 2008

Elusive Foreign Compact, The, Duncan B. Hollis

Missouri Law Review

Missouri v. Holland marks one of the great rivalries of foreign affairs law, with Missouri and the federal government squaring off over states' rights limitations on the federal government's treaty-making power.' But the rivalry did not end with that case. Recently, Missouri and the federal government opened a new chapter in their feud over state and federal powers in foreign affairs. This time, however, the constitutional challenge involved an international agreement made by Missouri, not the federal government

"Everybody Is Making Love Or Else Expecting Rain": Considering The Sexual Autonomy Rights Of Persons Institutionalized Because Of Mental Disability In Forensic Hospitals And In Asia, Michael L. Perlin

Washington Law Review

One of the most controversial policy questions in all of institutional mental disability law is the extent to which patients in psychiatric hospitals have a right to voluntary sexual interaction. The resolution of this matter involves difficult and sensitive questions of law, social policy, clinical judgment, politics, religion, and family structures. As difficult as these questions are in cases involving civil hospitals, the difficulties are exacerbated when the topic is the application of the right in forensic hospitals. Such facilities typically house individuals involved in the criminal-justice system: who may be incompetent to stand trial; who have been found incompetent …

Task Specificity In Early Oral Motor Development, Erin M. Wilson, Jordan R. Green, Yana Y. Yunusova, Christopher A. Moore

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

This article addresses a long-standing clinical and theoretical debate regarding the potential relationship between speech and nonspeech behaviors in the developing system. The review is motivated by the high popularity of nonspeech oral motor exercises (NSOMEs), including alimentary behaviors such as chewing, in the treatment of speech disorders in young children. The similarities and differences in the behavioral characteristics, sensory requirements, and task goals for speech and nonspeech oromotor behaviors are compared. Integrated theoretical paradigms and empirical data on the development of early oromotor behaviors are discussed. Although the efficacy of NSOMEs remains empirically untested at this time, studies of …

Faculty Publications

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and peptide YY (PYY) are anti-diabetes/obesity hormones ecreted from the gut after meal ingestion. We have shown that dietary-resistant starch (RS) increased GLP-1 and PYY secretion, but he mechanism remains unknown. RS is a fermentable fiber that lowers the glycemic index of the diet and liberates short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) through fermentation in the gut. This study investigates the two possible mechanisms by which RS stimulates GLP-1 and PYY secretion: the effect of a meal or glycemic index, and the effect of fermentation. Because GLP-1 and PYY secretions are stimulated by nutrient availability in the gut, the …

Data Note: Tracking Employment And Day Support Participation And Outcomes In State Intellectual Disability And Developmental Disability Agencies, Samita Bhattarai, Jean E. Winsor

Data Note Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

As a part of the FY2007 National Survey of Day and Employment Programs data was requested from state Intellectual Disabilities and Developmental Disabilities (ID/DD) agencies regarding the sources of information used to report the total number of individuals served in the following services categories: integrated employment, facility-based work, community-based non work, and facility-based non work. Data on sources is an important factor to note when comparing each state’s service outcomes over time. Collecting information on the source of the data can help to explain unexpected trends in state service distribution when the state has not implemented changes in policy or …

Fits & Starts: The Difficult Path For Working Single Parents, Rebecca Loya, Ruth J. Liberman, Randy Albelda, Elisabeth Babcock

Center for Social Policy Publications

With dramatic shifts in the economy in recent years, it has become increasingly difficult for families to move into or stay in the middle class without access to higher education and skills training. Government-sponsored work supports help by providing direct assistance to working families to meet basic needs, such as child care, food, and housing. Yet, many supports do not reach low-wage working families in Massachusetts because of low eligibility thresholds, inadequate funding, limited availability, limited awareness, and numerous barriers to accessing such supports. Even for low-wage workers who do receive key work supports, such as subsidized child care and …

Cultural Norms As A Source Of Law: The Example Of Bottled Water, Christine A. Klein, Ling-Yee Huang Nov 2008

Cultural Norms As A Source Of Law: The Example Of Bottled Water, Christine A. Klein, Ling-Yee Huang

Cardozo Law Review

As a metaphor for the interaction of law and culture, bottled water is striking in its simplicity and clarity. Bottled water consumers form a surprisingly loyal subculture of beverage drinkers, united by the water truths and water myths that they embrace. More recently, an equally fervent subculture of bottled water protestors has begun to coalesce. Notably, the cultural norms associated with both supporters and detractors extend beyond mere hydration and encompass such fundamental and varied notions as health, taste, convenience, status, morality, anti-privatization, sustainability, and truth-telling. In contrast to the cultural story, the legal narrative is surprisingly sparse, overlooking an …

The Morality Of Immigration Policy, Peter H. Schuck Nov 2008

The Morality Of Immigration Policy, Peter H. Schuck

San Diego Law Review

In Part I, I discuss five kinds of deontological arguments that a moralist might advance in debating the ideal nature of our immigration policy. In Part II, I take a more instrumentalist-consequentialist approach to immigration policy analysis. Before doing so, however, I briefly note some of the familiar methodological and cognitive limitations of applying this approach to complex public policy issues of this kind, limitations that remind us of the irreducible importance of normative considerations and judgments to such policy assessments. I then go on to identify the three main sets of empirical controversies that figure most prominently in immigration …

Brain Drain, Fernando R. Teson Nov 2008

Brain Drain, Fernando R. Teson

San Diego Law Review

This Article argues against this conventional view. Most of the time there is nothing unfair about the brain drain, whether one considers it from the standpoint of the emigrant, the source country, or the host country. Critics of the brain drain make problematic empirical and philosophical claims. The empirical assumption of the critics, that the brain drain invariably hurts developing countries, is controversial. While a number of authorities endorse the conventional view that the brain drain hurts source countries, a contrarian literature suggests that the brain drain may help those left behind - that there is, in fact, a brain …

Immigration And Political Equality, Michael Blake Nov 2008

Immigration And Political Equality, Michael Blake

San Diego Law Review

The act of immigration alters several forms of human relationship simultaneously. It represents a change in physical location and so alters the relationship between persons represented by geographic concepts such as territory and property. In immigrating, immigrants acquire a new place in the world that they may understand, in some sense of the word, as their own. Immigration also alters a political relationship insofar as the immigrant acquires a new political status in virtue of that new home in the world. The immigrant ought to be understood as creating through the act of immigration a new set of relationships to …

Altering Occlusal Vertical Dimension Provisionally With Base Metal Onlays: A Clinical Report, Soni Prasad, Jennifer Kuracina, Edward A. Monaco, Jr. Nov 2008

Altering Occlusal Vertical Dimension Provisionally With Base Metal Onlays: A Clinical Report, Soni Prasad, Jennifer Kuracina, Edward A. Monaco, Jr.

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

This article presents a method for altering occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) to restore dentitions with limited restorative space due to loss of tooth structure. A provisional increase in OVD is achieved using predominately base metal onlays, which offer advantages over conventional techniques. The onlays are resistant to wear, may be bonded well to nonrestored and restored tooth surfaces with resin cements, and provide a fairly reversible method of increasing OVD. A patient situation is presented which demonstrates the use of provisional base metal onlays in complete mouth rehabilitation.

Defining Resonance Raman Spectral Responses To Substrate Binding By Cytochrome P450 From Pseudomonas Putida, Piotr J. Mak, Daniel Kaluka, Munyaradzi Edith Manyumwa, Haiqing Zhang, Tianjing Deng, James R. Kincaid Nov 2008

Defining Resonance Raman Spectral Responses To Substrate Binding By Cytochrome P450 From Pseudomonas Putida, Piotr J. Mak, Daniel Kaluka, Munyaradzi Edith Manyumwa, Haiqing Zhang, Tianjing Deng, James R. Kincaid

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Resonance Raman spectra are reported for substrate-free and camphor-bound cytochrome P450cam and its isotopically labeled analogues that have been reconstituted with protoheme derivatives that bear -CD3 groups at the 1, 3, 5, and 8-positions (d12-protoheme) or deuterated methine carbons (d4-protoheme). In agreement with previous studies of this and similar enzymes, substrate binding induces changes in the high frequency and low frequency spectral regions, with the most dramatic effect in the low frequency region being activation of a new mode near 367 cm−1. This substrate-activated mode had been previously assigned as a second “propionate bending” mode (Chen et …

The Revitalization Of Older Industrial Cities: A Review Essay Of Retooling For Growth, Timothy J. Bartik Nov 2008

The Revitalization Of Older Industrial Cities: A Review Essay Of Retooling For Growth, Timothy J. Bartik

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This review essay debates the policy issues raised by the book Retooling for Growth: Building a 21st Century Economy in America's Older Industrial Areas, edited by Richard M. McGahey and Jennifer S. Vey (Brookings Institution Press, 2008). I argue that the main rationale for adopting policies to revitalize older industrial cities is to improve the per capita earnings of urban residents. Therefore, urban economic development policy should be seen as urban labor market policy. Increasing city residents' earnings requires progress on two fronts: increasing metropolitan labor demand; increasing the quantity and quality of the effective labor supply of city residents …

Analyzing The Catalytic Mechanism Of The Fe-Type Nitrile Hydratase From Comamonas Testosteroni Ni1, Saroja Rao, Richard C. Holz

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

In order to gain insight into the catalytic mechanism of Fe-type nitrile hydratases (NHase), the pH and temperature dependence of the kinetic parameters kcat, Km, and kcat/Km along with the solvent isotope effect were examined for the Fe-type NHase from Comamonas testosteroni Ni1 (CtNHase). CtNHase was found to exhibit a bell-shaped curve for plots of relative activity vs pH over pH values 4−10 for the hydration of acrylonitrile and was found to display maximal activity at pH ∼7.2. Fits of these data provided a pKES1 value of …

Lifestyle Of Shellmound Builders In Brazil (Galley Proofs), Sabine Eggers, C. C. Petronilho, K. Brandt, J. Filippini, Karl J. Reinhard

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The contact of inland and coastal prehistoric groups in Brazil is believed to have been restricted to regions with no geographical barrier, as is the case in the Ribeira de Iguape valley. The inland osteological collection from the riverine shellmound Moraes (5800–4500 BP) represents a unique opportunity to test this assumption for this region. Despite cultural similarities between riverine and coastal shellmounds, important ecological and site distribution differences are expected to impact on lifestyle. The purpose of this study is thus to document and interpret health and lifestyle indicators in Moraes in comparison to coastal shellmound groups. Specifically we test …
