Disability, Vulnerability, And The Limits Of Antidiscrimination, Ani B. Satz Nov 2008

Disability, Vulnerability, And The Limits Of Antidiscrimination, Ani B. Satz

Washington Law Review

Despite the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), disabled Americans face substantial barriers to entry into the workplace, lack material supports including health care and transportation, and may not receive reasonable accommodation that best supports their functioning. In addition, individuals with impairments have difficulty qualifying as disabled for disability protections. In light of these problems, some commentators suggest that a civil rights or antidiscrimination approach to disability discrimination—an approach for which activists fought for twenty years prior to the enactment of the ADA—may not adequately address disability discrimination. Some critics advocate a return to the social …

Technical Variables In High-Throughput Mirna Expression Profiling: Much Work Remains To Be Done, Peter T. Nelson, Wang-Xia Wang, Bernard R. Wilfred, Guiliang Tang

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Faculty Publications

MicroRNA (miRNA) gene expression profiling has provided important insights into plant and animal biology. However, there has not been ample published work about pitfalls associated with technical parameters in miRNA gene expression profiling. One source of pertinent information about technical variables in gene expression profiling is the separate and more well-established literature regarding mRNA expression profiling. However, many aspects of miRNA biochemistry are unique. For example, the cellular processing and compartmentation of miRNAs, the differential stability of specific miRNAs, and aspects of global miRNA expression regulation require specific consideration. Additional possible sources of systematic bias in miRNA expression studies include …

Nitric Oxide-Induced Bacteriostasis And Modification Of Iron-Sulphur Proteins In Escherichia Coli, Binbin Ren, Nianhui Zhang, Juanjuan Yang, Huangen Ding Nov 2008

Nitric Oxide-Induced Bacteriostasis And Modification Of Iron-Sulphur Proteins In Escherichia Coli, Binbin Ren, Nianhui Zhang, Juanjuan Yang, Huangen Ding

Faculty Publications

The nitric oxide (NO) cytotoxicity has been well documented in bacteria and mammalian cells. However, the underlying mechanism is still not fully understood. Here we report that transient NO exposure effectively inhibits cell growth of Escherichia coli in minimal medium under anaerobic growth conditions and that cell growth is restored when the NO-exposed cells are either supplemented with the branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) anaerobically or returned to aerobic growth conditions. The enzyme activity measurements show that dihydroxyacid dehydratase (IlvD), an iron-sulphur enzyme essential for the BCAA biosynthesis, is completely inactivated in cells by NO with the concomitant formation of the …

Leaf hairs (trichomes) of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) have been extensively used as a model to address general questions in cell and developmental biology. Here, we lay the foundation for a systems-level understanding of the biology of this model cell type by performing genome-wide gene expression analyses. We have identified 3,231 genes that are up-regulated in mature trichomes relative to leaves without trichomes, and we compared wild-type trichomes with two mutants, glabra3 and triptychon, that affect trichome morphology and physiology in contrasting ways. We found that cell wall-related transcripts were particularly overrepresented in trichomes, consistent with their highly elaborated structure. In …

Estimation And Model Selection Of Semiparametric Multivariate Survival Functions Under General Censorship, Xiaohong Chen, Yanqin Fan, Demian Pouzo, Zhiliang Ying Nov 2008

Estimation And Model Selection Of Semiparametric Multivariate Survival Functions Under General Censorship, Xiaohong Chen, Yanqin Fan, Demian Pouzo, Zhiliang Ying

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Many models of semiparametric multivariate survival functions are characterized by nonparametric marginal survival functions and parametric copula functions, where different copulas imply different dependence structures. This paper considers estimation and model selection for these semiparametric multivariate survival functions, allowing for misspecified parametric copulas and data subject to general censoring. We first establish convergence of the two-step estimator of the copula parameter to the pseudo-true value defined as the value of the parameter that minimizes the KLIC between the parametric copula induced multivariate density and the unknown true density. We then derive its root–n asymptotically normal distribution and provide a simple …

Memory Functioning In Children With Reading Disabilities And/Or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Clinical Investigation Of Their Working Memory And Long-Term Memory Functioning., Michelle Y. Kibby, Morris J. Cohen

Publications

We examined memory functioning in children with reading disabilities (RD), Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and RD/ADHD using a clinic sample with a clinical instrument: the Children's Memory Scale, enhancing its generalizability. Participants included 23 children with RD, 30 with ADHD, 30 with RD/ADHD, and 30 controls. Children with RD presented with reduced verbal short-term memory (STM) but intact visual STM, central executive (CE), and long-term memory (LTM) functioning. Their deficit in STM appeared specific to tasks requiring phonetic coding of material. Children with ADHD displayed intact CE and LTM functioning but reduced visual-spatial STM, especially when off stimulant medication. Children …

Faculty Publications

The neurohypophysial hormone oxytocin (OT), synthesized in magnocellular paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic (SON) nuclei, is well known for its effects in lactation. Our previous studies showed that central OT receptor (OTR) binding is increased during gestation and that blockade of central OTRs, specifically during mid-late gestation, causes a delay in OT release during suckling and reduces weight gain in pups, suggesting decreased milk delivery. In the present study, we tested whether central OTR blockade during late gestation disrupts the gestation-related plasticity in intrinsic membrane properties. Whole cell current-clamp recordings were performed in OT neurons from pregnant rats (19-22 days in …

Synthesis And Spectroelectrochemistry Of N-Cobaltacarborane Porphyrin Conjugates, Erhong Hao, Min Zhang, E. Wenbo, Karl M. Kadish, Frank R. Fronczek, Brandy H. Courtney, M. Graça H. Vicente

Faculty Publications

N-Substituted porphyrins are well-known for the distortion they exhibit of the porphyrin plane through the sp3 hybridization of one of the pyrrolenic units. They have served as model compounds in investigations of many biochemical processes. In this paper, we developed an efficient route to N-substituted porphyrins, and report the synthesis of a series of new N-substituted cobaltacarborane - porphyrins containing one or two cobaltabisdicarbollide anions linked by (CH2CH2O) 2 chains to either the core porphyrin nitrogens or to a meso-aminophenyl group. These conjugates show different degrees of distortion of the porphyrin macrocycle, which affect their spectroscopic and electrochemical properties. In …

Effects Of M-Tyrosine On Feeding And Survival Of Formosan Subterranean Termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), Bal K. Gautam, Gregg Henderson Nov 2008

Effects Of M-Tyrosine On Feeding And Survival Of Formosan Subterranean Termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), Bal K. Gautam, Gregg Henderson

Faculty Publications

Amino acids are important to all animal life. Termites rely mainly on microorganisms to retrieve these nitrogen sources from their food. One naturally occurring amino acid, m-tyrosine, has been reported to be toxic to bacteria and weeds. Its direct effects on termite survival are unknown however. Both no-choice and choice bioassays using five different doses of m-tyrosine were conducted to determine the feeding response and survival of Formosan subterranean termites, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), in the laboratory. In no-choice tests, although all doses of m-tyrosine tested reduced filter paper consumption, only the highest dose tested (0.05 M) had significantly …

Effect Of Treating Field Spatial Variability In Winter Wheat At Different Resolutions, B. S. Tubaña, D. B. Arnall, S. L. Holtz, J. B. Solie, K. Girma, W. R. Raun

Faculty Publications

This study was conducted to determine the scale at which spatial variability should be treated using an in-season nitrogen fertilization optimization algorithm (NFOA). Treatments included variable nitrogen (N) rate applications at three resolutions (0.84, 13.4, and 26.8 m2), two treatments of 90 kg N ha-1 fixed rate applied preplant or midseason, and a check plot. Treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design with three replications established at two locations for three years. On average, the NFOA-based N rates achieved a higher N use efficiency (NUE) of 41% compared with only 33% of the 90 kg N ha-1 fixed rate …

Acute Nicotine Reduces And Repeated Nicotine Increases Spontaneous Activity In Male And Female Lewis Rats, Adam J. Prus, Robert E. Vann, John A. Rosecrans, John R. James, Alan Pehrson, Mary M. O'Connell, Scott D. Philibin, Susan E. Robinson

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The Lewis (LEW) strain of rat appears more sensitive to nicotine than other strains in self-administration, conditioned place preference, and drug discrimination behavioral studies. The present study sought to further evaluate the behavioral effects of chronic nicotine treatment in the LEW strain by assessing spontaneous activity, which has consistently revealed sensitization to chronic nicotine administration in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. High active and low active male and female LEW rats (N = 8 per group) were treated twice daily with either nicotine (0.4 mg/kg, sc) or vehicle for 14 consecutive days. Regardless of baseline activity level or sex, spontaneous activity …

Caveolin-1, Tgf-Β Receptor Internalization, And The Pathogenesis Of Systemic Sclerosis, Francesco Del Galdo, Michael P. Lisanti, Sergio A. Jimenez

Jefferson Institute of Molecular Medicine Papers and Presentations

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the scientific literature supporting the participation of caveolin-1 in the pathogenesis of tissue fibrosis and the notion that modulation of the caveolin-1 pathway may represent a novel treatment for systemic sclerosis and other fibrotic diseases.

RECENT FINDINGS: Caveolin-1 plays an important role in the regulation of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) signaling owing to its participation in TGF-beta receptor internalization. TGF-beta receptor internalized through caveolin-1 lipid rafts undergoes rapid degradation, effectively decreasing TGF-beta signaling. Studies have shown that caveolin-1 knockdown in vitro markedly increased collagen gene expression in normal human lung fibroblasts. Caveolin-1 was reduced in …

Clinical Aspects Of Melatonin, Russel J. Reiter, Ahmet Korkmaz Nov 2008

Clinical Aspects Of Melatonin, Russel J. Reiter, Ahmet Korkmaz

Saudi Medical Journal

Melatonin is produced in the human pineal gland, particularly at night, with the circadian rhythm of blood melatonin levels closely paralleling its production within the pineal gland. Light exposure at night, or rapid transmeridian travel severely compromises the circadian production of melatonin. The disturbed melatonin rhythm contributes to jet lag and sleep inefficiency, both of which are improved by melatonin administration. Melatonin is also a highly effective direct free radical scavenger and antioxidant. In this capacity, melatonin reduces experimental cataractogenesis, traumatic injury to the spinal cord and brain, and protects against oxidative damage to neurons and glia in models of …

Angioedema After Local Trauma In A Patient On Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitor Therapy, B. B. Simmons, Michelle A. Folsom, L.Eslie A. Bryden, James Studdiford Nov 2008

Angioedema After Local Trauma In A Patient On Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitor Therapy, B. B. Simmons, Michelle A. Folsom, L.Eslie A. Bryden, James Studdiford

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers

Angioedema is a side effect that is often associated with use of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor medications. These medications result in increased levels of circulating bradykinins. This case illustrates the result of a local traumatic event to the upper lip, presumably causing marked bradykinin release in a patient who was taking an ACE-inhibitor. The local release of bradykinin from trauma, in addition to decreased bradykinin catabolism secondary to ACE-inhibitor therapy resulted in angioedema predominantly in the upper lip. The angioedema resolved with discontinuation of the ACE-inhibitor.

Cultural Norms As A Source Of Law: The Example Of Bottled Water, Christine A. Klein, Ling-Yee Huang Nov 2008

Cultural Norms As A Source Of Law: The Example Of Bottled Water, Christine A. Klein, Ling-Yee Huang

UF Law Faculty Publications

As a metaphor for the interaction of law and culture, bottled water is striking in its simplicity and clarity. Bottled water consumers form a surprisingly loyal subculture of beverage drinkers, united by the water truths and water myths that they embrace. More recently, an equally fervent subculture of bottled water protestors has begun to coalesce. Notably, the cultural norms associated with both supporters and detractors extend beyond mere hydration and encompass such fundamental and varied notions as health, taste, convenience, status, morality, anti-privatization, sustainability, and truth-telling. In contrast to the cultural story, the legal narrative is surprisingly sparse, overlooking an …
