Effectiveness Of A Targeted, Peer-Driven Skin Cancer Prevention Program For Lifeguards, Dawn Michelle Hall, Tom Elliott, Eric Nehl, Karen Glanz Nov 2008

Effectiveness Of A Targeted, Peer-Driven Skin Cancer Prevention Program For Lifeguards, Dawn Michelle Hall, Tom Elliott, Eric Nehl, Karen Glanz

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Lifeguards working at outdoor pools typically receive high amounts of sun exposure, increasing their risk for developing skin cancer. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a targeted, peer-driven intervention for skin cancer prevention among lifeguards. Nine pools received the targeted intervention, Pool Cool Plus, and five received the standard Pool Cool prevention program. Lifeguards completed surveys at the beginning and end of the summer. Lifeguards in both the targeted intervention and standard program groups increased their sun safety practices and reported more sun-safe pool policies and environments. Sunburn rates decreased among lifeguards participating in Pool Cool Plus. Future research should …

Drowning Survival In Icy Water: A Review, Stathis Avramidis, Ronald Butterly Nov 2008

Drowning Survival In Icy Water: A Review, Stathis Avramidis, Ronald Butterly

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

We conducted an extensive literature review using the search terms of “drowning” and “hypothermia” to discover the major factors related to differences in survival rate especially associated with hypothermic effects. Studies indicated that some differences in drowning survival could be identified associated with age, sex, length of submersion, reduced core body temperature, and quality of cardiopulmonary respiratory care. The variability of results associated with the large number of studies prevented us from making any recommendations about whether hypothermia can improve survival among either children or adults.

Ph-Induced Activation Of Arenavirus Membrane Fusion Is Antagonized By Small-Molecule Inhibitors, Joanne York, Dongcheng Dai, Sean M. Amberg, Jack H. Nunberg Nov 2008

Ph-Induced Activation Of Arenavirus Membrane Fusion Is Antagonized By Small-Molecule Inhibitors, Joanne York, Dongcheng Dai, Sean M. Amberg, Jack H. Nunberg

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The arenavirus envelope glycoprotein (GPC) mediates viral entry through pH-induced membrane fusion in the endosome. This crucial process in the viral life cycle can be specifically inhibited in the New World arenaviruses by the small-molecule compound ST-294. Here, we show that ST-294 interferes with GPC-mediated membrane fusion by targeting the interaction of the G2 fusion subunit with the stable signal peptide (SSP). We demonstrate that amino acid substitutions at lysine-33 of the Junin virus SSP confer resistance to ST-294 and engender de novo sensitivity to ST-161, a chemically distinct inhibitor of the Old World Lassa fever virus. These compounds, as …

Referral In The Wake Of Conscientious Objection To Abortion, Carolyn Mcleod Nov 2008

Referral In The Wake Of Conscientious Objection To Abortion, Carolyn Mcleod

Philosophy Publications

Currently, the preferred accommodation for conscientious objection to abortion in medicine is to allow the objector to refuse to accede to the patient's request so long as the objector refers the patient to a physician who performs abortions. The referral part of this arrangement is controversial, however. Pro-life advocates claim that referrals make objectors complicit in the performance of acts that they, the objectors, find morally offensive. McLeod argues that the referral requirement is justifiable, although not in the way that people usually assume.

The Teaching Of Swimming Based On A Model Derived From The Causes Of Drowning, Robert Keig Stallman, Malfrid Junge, Turid Blixt Nov 2008

The Teaching Of Swimming Based On A Model Derived From The Causes Of Drowning, Robert Keig Stallman, Malfrid Junge, Turid Blixt

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This paper proposes that the teaching of beginner swimming should be organized according to the causes of drowning. We surveyed drowning reports, interviewed drowning survivors, and observed simulated drowning victims to determine common characteristics associated with drowning. We also reviewed 25 swimming instructional programs offered by well-recognized national programs from 18 separate countries and identified 8 common beginning swimming skills. These skills could be closely connected with the causes of drowning. We proposed a definition for being able to swim that should be given common international acceptance so that learning to swim can actually provide skills needed for preventing drowning.

Corporate Misconduct And The Perfect Storm Of Shareholder Litigation, Jessica Erickson Nov 2008

Corporate Misconduct And The Perfect Storm Of Shareholder Litigation, Jessica Erickson

Notre Dame Law Review

When it comes to combating corporate misconduct, is more litigation necessarily better? The conventional wisdom is that we should deploy every weapon in the law's arsenal to combat corporate misconduct: This wisdom, however, reflects legal scholarship that is confined to analyzing securities class actions and derivative suits in isolation, with little inquiry into the interplay between them. By failing to take a broader view of shareholder litigation, legal scholars have missed an opportunity to provide courts with the conceptual tools necessary to meet the complex challenges of complex corporate litigation. In courtrooms and boardrooms across the country, a debate is …

Stress, Adult Attachment, And Academic Success Among Community College Students, Linda L. Petroff Nov 2008

Stress, Adult Attachment, And Academic Success Among Community College Students, Linda L. Petroff

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Little is known about predictors of academic success among two-year community college students. The purpose of this study was to examine the predictors of stress, adult attachment, and their interaction on the outcome variables of grade-point average and course completion among 160 two-year community college participants in a small Midwestern community college. Previous research had found relationships among these variables among four-year college students. Thus, it is important to examine these variables as predictors of academic success among community college students. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire and three surveys which included scales with established reliability and validity: the Inventory of …

A New Simplified Derivation Of Nash Bargaining Solution, Tanja Magoc, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2008

A New Simplified Derivation Of Nash Bargaining Solution, Tanja Magoc, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In the 1950s, the Nobel Prize winner John F. Nash has shown that under certain conditions, the best solution to the bargaining problem is when the product of the (increase in) utilities is the largest. Nash's derivation assumed that we are looking for strategies that assign a single situation to each bargaining situation. In this paper, we propose a simplified derivation of Nash bargaining solution that does not requires this assumption.

Toward Using National Cancer Surveillance Data For Preventing And Controlling Cervical And Other Human Papillomavirus-Associated Cancers In The Us, Mona Saraiya, Faruque Ahmed, Mary White, Herschel Lawson, Elizabeth R. Unger, Christie Eheman

United States Public Health Resources

This supplement, known as the ABHACUS (Assessing the Burden of HPV-Associated Cancers in the United States) supplement, contains 22 articles. Together, these articles provide a comprehensive snapshot of data related to the occurrence and control of multiple cancers that have been associated with the human papillomavirus (HPV). These analyses highlight the burden of HPV associated cancers in the US population as a whole and among vulnerable population subgroups. We anticipate that these findings will be an important resource for enhancing existing strategies for the prevention and control of HPV associated cancers.

HPV is estimated to be responsible for 5.2% of …

Surgical Management Of Blunt Pancreatic Trauma: A Modus Operandi Or Individualized Therapy?, Muhammad Rizwan Khan, Kiran Ejaz Nov 2008

Surgical Management Of Blunt Pancreatic Trauma: A Modus Operandi Or Individualized Therapy?, Muhammad Rizwan Khan, Kiran Ejaz

Section of General Surgery

The overall rate of blunt pancreatic trauma observed in level one trauma centers is rather low compared to other injuries, with a reported prevalence of 0.4 per 100,000 hospital admissions. The situation may be further complicated by the presence of associated major visceral injuries in these patients. A number of previous reports indicate that blunt pancreatic trauma carries high morbidity and mortality rates, especially when diagnosis is delayed or inappropriate surgery is attempted. Many mandate prompt surgical explorations for organ-specific diagnosis on CT; however other literature and upcoming studies prove otherwise. Over the years, several technologic advances have increased the …

Antibody Responses Of Cervids (Cervus Elaphus) Following Experimental Mycobacterium Bovis Infection And The Implications For Immunodiagnosis, Noel P. Harrington, Om P. Surujballi, John F. Prescott, J. Robert Duncan, W. Ray Waters, Konstantin Lyashchenko, Rena Greenwald

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Captive and free-ranging wildlife animals are implicated in the maintenance and transmission of bovine tuberculosis and therefore pose a significant obstacle to eradication of the disease from domestic livestock. The current antemortem diagnostic method, the intradermal tuberculin skin test, is impractical for routine use with many wild animals. Antibody-based assays are particularly attractive because the animals are handled only once and immediate processing of the sample is not required. This report characterizes the antibody responses of red deer-elk hybrids (Cervus elaphus) against Mycobacterium bovis and subsequently evaluates the diagnostic performance of select antigens in a rapid-test format. Sequential …

The Past, Present, And Future Of The United Nations: A Comment On Paul Kennedy And The Parliament Of Man, Kenneth Anderson Nov 2008

The Past, Present, And Future Of The United Nations: A Comment On Paul Kennedy And The Parliament Of Man, Kenneth Anderson

Book Reviews

This is the English language version of an essay (10,000 words) appearing in the Revista de Libros (Madrid), considering the history and future of the United Nations and global governance through the lens of Paul Kennedy's recent work, The Parliament of Man. The essay is highly skeptical of what it describes as platonism about the future of the UN as the seat of global governance. It offers an alternative view of how to consider the work of the UN, in three areas: security, economic development, and values. The essay argues that, particularly with the rise of new great power tensions …
