Weather-related health effects have attracted renewed interest because of the observed and predicted climate change. The authors studied the short-term effects of cold weather on mortality in 15 European cities. The effects of minimum apparent temperature on cause- and age-specific daily mortality were assessed for the cold season (October-March) by using data from 1990-2000. For city-specific analysis, the authors used Poisson regression and distributed lag models, controlling for potential confounders. Meta-regression models summarized the results and explored heterogeneity. A 1 degrees C decrease in temperature was associated with a 1.35% (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.16, 1.53) increase in the daily …

The Use Of Cellomics To Study Enterocyte Cytoskeletal Proteins In Coeliac Disease Patients, Bashir M. Mohamed, Conleth Feighery, Yvonne Williams, Anthony Davies, Dermot Kelleher, Yuri Volkov, Jacinta Kelly, Mohamed Abuzakouk

Articles

Coeliac disease is characterised by inflammation of small intestinal mucosa accompanied by abnormal villous architecture. It is now accepted that some patients with positive coeliac serology tests may have minor mucosal lesions that may not be apparent on routine histopathological analysis. The aim of the study was to perform detailed examination of enterocyte morphology and cytoskeletal structures using a high content analysis technology. Duodenal biopsies from 14 untreated and 10 treated coeliac patients and from 20 non-coeliac controls were examined. Tissue sections from six patients (study group subjects) before and after the development of gluten-sensitive enteropathy were also investigated. Immunohistochemical …

Articles

Regulatable promoter systems allow gene expression to be tightly controlled in vivo. This is highly desirable for the development of safe, efficacious adenoviral vectors that can be used to treat human diseases in the clinic. Ideally, regulatable cassettes should have minimal gene expression in the "OFF" state, and expression should quickly reach therapeutic levels in the "ON" state. In addition, the components of regulatable cassettes should be non-toxic at physiological concentrations and should not be immunogenic, especially when treating chronic illness that requires long-lasting gene expression. In this chapter, we will describe in detail protocols to develop and validate first …

Application Of Multi-Modal Fusion Techniques For Corrosion Detection And Characterization In Aging Aircraft Components, Soumya De Jan 2008

Application Of Multi-Modal Fusion Techniques For Corrosion Detection And Characterization In Aging Aircraft Components, Soumya De

Masters Theses

"The United States Air Force (USAF) recently estimated that corrosion maintenance costs exceed $800M per year. Given this, it is desirable to reduce the amount of "find it-fix it" corrosion maintenance activities. One method is to introduce a damage tolerance approach for corrosion detection. In order for this to become a reality, a comprehensive snapshot of corrosion present must be generated.

This thesis presents a data fusion process to perform uni- and multi-modal nondestructive testing and evaluation of corrosion under paint and in lap joints for volumetric characterization. The process for analyzing a given structure includes: 1) the acquisition of …

Defect-Tolerance And Testing For Configurable Nano-Crossbars, Mandar V. Joshi Jan 2008

Defect-Tolerance And Testing For Configurable Nano-Crossbars, Mandar V. Joshi

Masters Theses

"Moore's Law speculated a trend in computation technology in terms of number of transistors per unit area that would double roughly every two years. Even after 40 years of this prediction, current technologies have been following it successfully. There are however, certain physical limitations of current CMOS that would result in fundamental obstructions to continuation of Moore's Law. Although there is a debate amongst experts on how much time it would take for this to happen, it is certain that some entirely new paradigms for semiconductor electronics would be needed to replace CMOS and to delay the end of Moore's …

Quantifying The Desired Degree Of Supply Chain Flexibility, Poorna Marappa Jan 2008

Quantifying The Desired Degree Of Supply Chain Flexibility, Poorna Marappa

Masters Theses

"The dynamic nature of today's market drives the need for flexibility in supply chains. The ever-growing need for and importance of flexibility in supply chains has motivated researchers to develop frameworks to achieve supply chain flexibility. Much of the research on supply chain flexibility focuses on drivers of the need for flexibility and classification of supply chain flexibility. Existing frameworks for determining the desired degree of flexibility in supply chains give an overview methodology; however, a comprehensive framework is absent. This research proposes a comprehensive framework to quantify the desired degree of flexibility in supply chains and accordingly determine its …

Polyomaviruses In Pediatric Renal Disease, Julie Moran Jan 2008

Polyomaviruses In Pediatric Renal Disease, Julie Moran

Masters

BK virus (BKV) and JC virus (JCV) are ubiquitous in the human population and frequently reactivate during periods of immune suppression. The emergence of polyomavirus-associated diseases among renal and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients has highlighted the lack of knowledge of the natural history of BKV and JCV in humans. In the pediatric population, in particular, immune suppressive therapy is commonly used as a treatment for primary renal diseases. To date, there has been limited investigation of polyomavirus reactivation in pediatric patients with renal transplants or with primary renal disease. Given the association of polyomavirus reactivation with the use of …

Preparing Instructors Of Adult Learners To Address The Needs Of Minority Students, Travell Unique Brock

Graduate Research Papers

In predominately Caucasian educational systems, diversity in the classroom is becoming a fast-growing phenomenon. With this new phenomenon, adult instructors now have a new challenge of facilitating learning in an environment where the learners not only have different learning capabilities, but also language and cultural differences. The reviewer answers the following questions: what are the important considerations for instructors to prepare diverse adult learners for corporate work environments, higher education, and K-12 professional development? And what are the appropriate cultural specific media and literature resources to include in training?

The literature collected focused on resources related to teaching adult minority …

Tactical Ineffective Assistance In Capital Trials, Kyle Graham Jan 2008

Tactical Ineffective Assistance In Capital Trials, Kyle Graham

American University Law Review

Are defense attorneys sandbagging in their death-penalty cases? In Poindexter v. Mitchell, a habeas corpus case decided in 2006, Chief Judge Danny Boggs of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit wrote that by conducting a deliberately defective investigation into mitigation evidence that might otherwise have been presented at the penalty phase of a capital trial, a defense attorney can virtually guarantee that any death sentence the jury returns will be vacated in later proceedings. The likelihood of such an outcome, Boggs wrote, will more than make up for the somewhat greater chance that a jury that …

Model-Centered Instruction, The Design, And The Designer, Andrew S. Gibbons Iii Jan 2008

Model-Centered Instruction, The Design, And The Designer, Andrew S. Gibbons Iii

Faculty Publications

A model of instruction described by Wenger (1987) identifies three elements that are active during instruction: the mental model the instructor wishes to share with the learner, the external experience used to communicate the mental model, and the evolving mental model of the learner. Gibbons (2003a), writing in response to Seel (2003), noted this three-part description as a bridge concept relating learning and instruction. This view has important practical implications for designers of instruction. For example, Gibbons and Rogers (in press) propose that there exists a natural layered architecture within instructional designs that corresponds with instructional functions. Among these layers …

"I Will Contend With Them That Contendeth With Thee": The Divine Warrior In Jacob's Speech Of 2 Nephi 6-10, Daniel Belnap Jan 2008

"I Will Contend With Them That Contendeth With Thee": The Divine Warrior In Jacob's Speech Of 2 Nephi 6-10, Daniel Belnap

Faculty Publications

It is unclear from the text exactly where or when Jacob offered his magnificent discourse recorded in 2 Nephi 6–10, but while such details are missing, the discourse itself stands as one of the most powerful passages of scripture in the Book of Mormon. The purpose of the speech was to answer an ongoing concern of the Nephites. Since their departure from Jerusalem it appears that the Nephites had felt cut off and isolated from God’s promises because they lacked a permanent land of inheritance. By the time of Jacob’s speech, the Nephites had been driven from two lands of …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the types of interactions student teachers had with the students during their middle school physical education game play. The subjects were two male senior physical education majors who were concluding their course work with their student teaching experience. For this study students wore a wireless microphone in order for the researcher to hear the types of interactions they had with their students during class time. It was …

Trademarks, Consumer Psychology, And The Sophisticated Consumer, Glenn L. Christensen, Eric D. Derosia, Thomas R. Lee Jan 2008

Trademarks, Consumer Psychology, And The Sophisticated Consumer, Glenn L. Christensen, Eric D. Derosia, Thomas R. Lee

Faculty Publications

Trademark law rests on an amorphous foundation. The scope of protection afforded to the trademark holder turns on the psychology and behavior of the "ordinary" consumer "under the normally prevalent conditions of the market and giving the attention such purchasers usually give in buying that class of goods." In trademark law, "everything hinges upon whether there is a likelihood of confusion in the mind of an appreciable number of 'reasonably prudent' buyers." Where the ordinary consumer is deemed sufficiently "sophisticated" to discern differences between two competing marks, the law forecloses protection for the senior trademark.

Nanoscale Characterization Of Thin Film Coatings Using Annular Dark Field Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy, Guillermo Acosta, Richard Vanfleet, David D. Allred Jan 2008

Nanoscale Characterization Of Thin Film Coatings Using Annular Dark Field Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy, Guillermo Acosta, Richard Vanfleet, David D. Allred

Faculty Publications

When considering the optical performance of thin films in the Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV), developing an accurate physical description of a thin film coating is necessary to be able to successfully model optical performance. With the short wavelengths of the EUV, film interfaces and sample roughness warrant special attention and care. The surfaces of thin film samples are routinely measured by Atomic Force Microscopy, from which roughness can be determined. However, characterizing the quality of interfaces below the surface is much more challenging. In a recent study of scandium oxide thin films, High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy and Annular Dark Field …

Communication And The Knowable Community, Bonnie Brennen Jan 2008

Communication And The Knowable Community, Bonnie Brennen

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This essay draws on Raymond Williams's concept of a knowable community in an effort to understand the myriad of connections that exist between individuals and society. Williams, who sees communication and community as synonymous, suggests that a knowable community may ultimately emerge through the process of communication and that in the discovery of connections between individuals and society, an understanding of historically specific patterns may be shown. This essay also discusses an oral history project with journalists who worked for Gannett in the 1960s as an example of an emerging knowable community that questioned traditional notions of community and challenged …

Messenger Rna Half-Life Measurements In Mammalian Cells, Chyi-Ying A Chen, Nader Ezzeddine, Ann-Bin Shyu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The recognition of the importance of mRNA turnover in regulating eukaryotic gene expression has mandated the development of reliable, rigorous, and "user-friendly" methods to accurately measure changes in mRNA stability in mammalian cells. Frequently, mRNA stability is studied indirectly by analyzing the steady-state level of mRNA in the cytoplasm; in this case, changes in mRNA abundance are assumed to reflect only mRNA degradation, an assumption that is not always correct. Although direct measurements of mRNA decay rate can be performed with kinetic labeling techniques and transcriptional inhibitors, these techniques often introduce significant changes in cell physiology. Furthermore, many critical mechanistic …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A nationwide model predicts the annual county-to-county person roundtrips for air taxi, commercial airline, and automobile at 1-year intervals through 2030. the transportation systems analysis model (TSAM) uses the four-step transportation systems modeling process to calculate trip generation, trip distribution, and mode choice for each county origin-destination pair. Network assignment is formulated for commercial airline and air taxi demand. TSAM classifies trip rates by trip purpose, household income group, and type of metropolitan statistical area from which the round-trip started. a graphical user interface with geographic information systems capability is included in the model. Potential applications of the model are …
