Forecasting Model For Air Taxi, Commercial Airline, And Automobile Demand In The United States, Hojong Baik, Antonio A. Trani, Nicolas Hinze, Howard Swingle, Senanu Ashiabor, Anand Seshadri

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A nationwide model predicts the annual county-to-county person roundtrips for air taxi, commercial airline, and automobile at 1-year intervals through 2030. the transportation systems analysis model (TSAM) uses the four-step transportation systems modeling process to calculate trip generation, trip distribution, and mode choice for each county origin-destination pair. Network assignment is formulated for commercial airline and air taxi demand. TSAM classifies trip rates by trip purpose, household income group, and type of metropolitan statistical area from which the round-trip started. a graphical user interface with geographic information systems capability is included in the model. Potential applications of the model are …

Comparison Of Career Statistics And Season Statistics In Major League Baseball, Mark Joseph Ammons

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This is a comparison of statistics for some of the best seasons and careers of players from Major League Baseball; using data collected on batting average, at bat to homerun ratio, and earned run average. Two teams were created, composed of season leaders and career leaders, chosen for their outstanding offensive and pitching abilities, and were pitted against one another to determine superiority. These two teams also compared against a team from each era of major league baseball. The season and career leaders challenged, the 1918 Boston Red Sox, 1927 New York Yankees, 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers, 1961 New York Yankees, …

Aquaporin 3 Water Channel Protein Gene Expression In Squalis Acanthias Dogfish Shark, Debra Lee Murray

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Aquaporins are a family of membrane proteins that provide channels for the rapid movement of water molecules and some small solutes across the cellular membrane. Since the discovery of the first water channel protein, hundreds of homologous proteins have been found in all forms of life and much has been learned about their complex role in body water homeostasis. This is the first study to use molecular and immunological techniques to demonstrate that an orthologue of mammalian AQP3 is present in the epithelial cells of Squalus acanthias dogfish shark kidney, gills, rectal gland, esophagus, stomach, eye and brain. Efficient Mrf Approach To Document Image Enhancement, Tayo Obafemi-Ajayi, Gady Agam, Ophir Frieder

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Markov random field (MRF) based approaches have been shown to perform well in a wide range of applications. Due to the iterative nature of the algorithm, the computational cost of such applications is normally high. In the context of document image analysis, where numerous documents have to be processed, this computational cost may become prohibitive. We describe a novel approach to document image enhancement using MRF. We show that by using domain specific knowledge, we are able to substantially improve computational performance by an order of magnitude. Moreover, in contrast to known techniques where patch initialization is arbitrary, in the …

Preferred Coaching Qualities In Ncaa Division I College Athletes: A Qualitative Analysis Of Basketball Players From The Millennial Generation, Edward Carl Hoffman Jan 2008

Preferred Coaching Qualities In Ncaa Division I College Athletes: A Qualitative Analysis Of Basketball Players From The Millennial Generation, Edward Carl Hoffman

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The millennial generation, otherwise known as the Echo Boomers, is a generation with characteristics that few previous generations have possessed. In the world of sport, this generation is currently dominating the ranks of collegiate athletics. Moreover, the coaching ranks are just beginning to experience the characteristics of this exceptional group of people. Thus, the purpose of the study was to examine the preferred coaching styles of athletes from the millennial generation at the NCAA Division I level from a semi-structured qualitative perspective. A secondary purpose was to examine these characteristics from a gender perspective. After analyzing the data, five themes …

Examination Of Preferred Coaching Behaviors As Predicted By Athlete Gender, Race, And Playing Time, Glenn Parrish Burdette Jan 2008

Examination Of Preferred Coaching Behaviors As Predicted By Athlete Gender, Race, And Playing Time, Glenn Parrish Burdette

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The Multidimensional Model for Sport Leadership (MML) (Chelladurai, 1980) states that athlete performance and satisfaction are functions of the congruency between the preferred leadership of student-athletes, the required behavior of the coach as dictated by the situation, and the actual behavior of the coach. The model was developed nearly 30 years ago and while research outside of sport has indicated that leadership preferences have changed with generations, the MML is still the most widely accepted model for sport leadership. As such, research in sport should examine how appropriate the model is to todays athletic culture. Gender, one member characteristic, has …

Jurisdictional Resequencing And Restraint The Jurisprudence Of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Heather Elliott Jan 2008

Jurisdictional Resequencing And Restraint The Jurisprudence Of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Heather Elliott

Articles

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is well known for her restrained jurisprudence, and yet one line of her opinions has been criticized as “substantially illegitimate.” Ruhrgas AG v. Marathon Oil Co. and Sinochem International Co. v. Malaysia International Shipping Corp. both involve “jurisdictional resequencing,” which in certain circumstances permits a federal court to decide a threshold jurisdictional question, such as forum non conveniens, before it resolves the question of subject-matter jurisdiction. Because jurisdictional resequencing allows courts to decide questions when they may in fact lack subject-matter jurisdiction, at least one critic has said this doctrine is “close to the line that …

Tax Fairness, Brian Galle Jan 2008

Tax Fairness, Brian Galle

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This Article argues that, contrary to the consensus of economists and many legal scholars, the norm of "horizontal equity" in taxation has independent meaning as a default rule in favor of existing arrangements. Although it has long been said, and widely thought, that tax should be fair in its dealings with individuals who are situated similarly to one another, no one has been able to say convincingly just what that fairness comprises. As a result, the learned referees in the last major dispute over the significance of horizontal equity judged that fairness's critic had decidedly won the day. Since then, …

An Approach For Human Swarm Interaction, Shishir Bashyal Jan 2008

An Approach For Human Swarm Interaction, Shishir Bashyal

Masters Theses

"This study shows that appropriate human interaction can benefit a swarm of robots to reach to goal more efficiently. The common belief in swarm robotics that user intervention adversely affects intelligence of the swarm is studied carefully to show that the traditional human-robot interaction approaches are not suitable for human swarm interaction. A set of desirable features for human swarm interaction is identified and an interaction architecture is proposed that has all of the desirable features. A swarm simulation environment is then created that allows simulating a swarm behavior in an indoor environment. Three different applications of the swarm are …

Wireless Mote-Based In-Process Diagnostics Using Hand-Held Tools In Network Enabled Manufacturing Environments, Reghu Anguswamy Jan 2008

Wireless Mote-Based In-Process Diagnostics Using Hand-Held Tools In Network Enabled Manufacturing Environments, Reghu Anguswamy

Masters Theses

"When complex manufacturing systems are considered, post process inspection can be a very time consuming and costly. In addition, no inspection data is typically collected unless a major problem is encountered. Real-time monitoring of the manufacturing processes and verification of its product quality are two important factors to reduce the manufacturing lead time and to ensure safety and quality.

In this thesis, a diagnostics and root-cause analysis scheme with a single channel wireless routing protocol for real-time monitoring of process quality of pull-type fastening operations is first presented. The overall architecture has been implemented on a Huck45 pull-type tool, which …

Electromagnetic Modeling Of Distributed Coaxial Cable Crack Sensors In Reinforced Concrete Members, Mei Wang Jan 2008

Electromagnetic Modeling Of Distributed Coaxial Cable Crack Sensors In Reinforced Concrete Members, Mei Wang

Masters Theses

"Distributed crack sensors were recently developed with coaxial cables that are composed of inner and outer conductors as well as dielectric layer in between. These sensors were designed based on the change in topology of the cable outer conductor structure under strain effects. Various tests of reinforced concrete (RC) beams and columns indicated that the newly designed sensors are 10~50 times more sensitive than commercial cables to the longitudinal elongation applied on their cable structures. The spatial resolution of the sensors is approximately 50 mm. Limited numerical simulations with the transmission line theory and the finite difference time domain model …

Development Of A Gis-Based Seismic Hazard Screening Tool, Andrew J. Wilding Jan 2008

Development Of A Gis-Based Seismic Hazard Screening Tool, Andrew J. Wilding

Masters Theses

"Geotechnical earthquake engineering hazards have consequences that are difficult to mitigate, especially for infrastructure systems with multiple and distributed components. In the last few decades significant progress has been made to provide more accurate and useful methods to evaluate hazards for complex systems. One of these advances involves the application of spatial analysis and geographic information systems (GIS), for not only presenting data as maps, but also providing more practical and usable solutions, such as calculating the hazard potential with spatial distribution. This thesis studies the evaluation of geotechnical earthquake engineering hazards within a GIS environment, using borehole-specific data and …

A Time Series Classifier, Christopher Mark Gore Jan 2008

A Time Series Classifier, Christopher Mark Gore

Masters Theses

"A time series is a sequence of data measured at successive time intervals. Time series analysis refers to all of the methods employed to understand such data, either with the purpose of explaining the underlying system producing the data or to try to predict future data points in the time series...An evolutionary algorithm is a non-deterministic method of searching a solution space, and modeled after biological evolutionary processes. A learning classifier system (LCS) is a form of evolutionary algorithm that operates on a population of mapping rules. We introduce the time series classifier TSC, a new type of LCS that …
