Ecological surprises, substantial and unanticipated changes in the abundance of one or more species that result from previously unsuspected processes, are a common outcome of both experiments and observations in community and population ecology. Here, we give examples of such surprises along with the results of a survey of well-established field ecologists, most of whom have encountered one or more surprises over the course of their careers. Truly surprising results are common enough to require their consideration in any reasonable effort to characterize nature and manage natural resources. We classify surprises as dynamic-, pattern-, or intervention-based, and we speculate on …

Mechanistic Home Range Models And Resource Selection Analysis: A Reconciliation And Unification, Paul R. Moorcroft, Alex Barnett Apr 2008

Mechanistic Home Range Models And Resource Selection Analysis: A Reconciliation And Unification, Paul R. Moorcroft, Alex Barnett

Dartmouth Scholarship

In the three decades since its introduction, resource selection analysis (RSA) has become a widespread method for analyzing spatial patterns of animal relocations obtained from telemetry studies. Recently, mechanistic home range models have been proposed as an alternative framework for studying patterns of animal space-use. In contrast to RSA models, mechanistic home range models are derived from underlying mechanistic descriptions of individual movement behavior and yield spatially explicit predictions for patterns of animal space-use. In addition, their mechanistic underpinning means that, unlike RSA, mechanistic home range models can also be used to predict changes in space-use following perturbation. In this …

Uncertainty And The Endangered Species Act, Teresa Woods, Steve Morey Apr 2008

Uncertainty And The Endangered Species Act, Teresa Woods, Steve Morey

Indiana Law Journal

The U.S. Endangered Species Act requires the US. Fish and Wildlife Service to use the "best available" information when deciding whether to list species as threatened or endangered, and when regulating conservation for species already listed. The agency has discretion to determine the types, quantity, and quality of the information it uses as "best available, "but little discretion to defer decision making in cases where important scientific information is lacking. Complexities of nature, obscurity of many species' life history, and changing environmental circumstances are only some of the reasons why information is rarely complete, and why decisions are almost always …

Data Gaps In Natural Resource Management: Sniffing For Leaks Along The Information Pipeline, Holly Doremus Apr 2008

Data Gaps In Natural Resource Management: Sniffing For Leaks Along The Information Pipeline, Holly Doremus

Indiana Law Journal

Despite wide recognition that natural resource management decisions are heavily dependent on the supply of scientific information, little attention has been paid to the processes by which that information is supplied. This paper lays out the key steps of the information supply pipeline, which include exploration, extraction, refining, blending, distribution, and consumption. Leaks in the pipeline can occur at any of these steps, interrupting the supply of information to decision makers. Because information supply is contextual and complex, no universal fix can address all information shortfalls. Nonetheless, several general recommendations emerge. First, decision makers must recognize the limits of scientific …

Oxygen Diffusion Through Natural Extracellular Matrices: Implications For Estimating "Critical Thickness" Values In Tendon Tissue Engineering, Caroline Androjna, Jorge E. Gatica, Joanne M. Belovich, Kathleen A. Derwin Apr 2008

Oxygen Diffusion Through Natural Extracellular Matrices: Implications For Estimating "Critical Thickness" Values In Tendon Tissue Engineering, Caroline Androjna, Jorge E. Gatica, Joanne M. Belovich, Kathleen A. Derwin

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Oxygen is necessary for maintaining cell proliferation and viability and extracellular matrix (ECM) production in 3-dimensional tissue engineering. Typically, diffusion is the primary mode for oxygen transport in vitro; thus, ensuring an adequate oxygen supply is essential. In this study, we determined the oxygen diffusion coefficients of 3 natural ECMs that are being investigated as construct scaffolds for tendon tissue engineering: small-intestine submucosa (SIS), human dermis (Alloderm (R)), and canine fascia lata. Diffusion coefficients were determined using a standard diffusion cell system. The ranges for each matrix type were: SIS: 7 x 10(-6) - 2 x 10(-5) cm(2)/s, Alloderm (R): …

The Influence Of Citrate, Maltolate And Fluoride On The Gastrointestinal Absorption Of Aluminum At A Drinking Water-Relevant Concentration: A 26Al And 14C Study, Yuzhao Zhou, Wesley R. Harris, Robert A. Yokel

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The objectives were to test the null hypotheses that (1) citrate, maltolate, and fluoride do not significantly influence oral Al bioavailability, Cmax or Tmax at an Al dose relevant to drinking water exposure; and (2) Al citrate and maltolate are absorbed intact from the gastrointestinal tract. Male Fisher rats were given 1 ml of solution intra-gastrically containing 1 nCi 26Al (65 nmol total Al) as the Al3+ ion, or as complexes with 14C-citrate, 14C-maltolate or fluoride, during concurrent 27Al iv infusion. Blood was repeatedly collected for serum 26Al, total Al and 14 …

Spoiled Brands: Protecting Your Company's Goodwill And Assets From Food Contamination Claims, Zachary S. Finn, Timothy Anderson, Donald Lund

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

For most people, going to a restaurant ends with a sense of satisfaction and enjoyment, not sickness and the possibility of death. This is also true when purchasing products at a local grocery store. However, recent events have cast doubt on the safety of America’s food supply. The issue facing risk managers is how to reduce these escalating risks and manage any unfortunate outcomes. The cost of food contamination can be devastating to a business financially, and can result in both direct losses related to product recall expenses and indirect losses such as lost reputation and goodwill. By reducing the …

Sex And Globalization, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol

UF Law Faculty Publications

For some time now, I have focused on a mission to bring together the separate discourses of the human rights and trade fields—certainly not to blend them, but to raise awareness of their myriad interconnections. Indeed, human rights and trade are interlocking pieces of the puzzle we call international law and cannot possibly remain sequestered in the "splendid isolation" in which they have existed since their inception as disciplines. In any study of globalization, especially if one endeavors to pursue its benefits for all persons, not just the elite around the world, one must be aware of and seek to …

Effects Of Gregariousness, Conspicuousness, And Novelty On Blue Jay (Cyanocitta Cristata) Learned Avoidance And Stimulus Generalization Of Unpalatable Prey, Joyce M. Dykema Apr 2008

Effects Of Gregariousness, Conspicuousness, And Novelty On Blue Jay (Cyanocitta Cristata) Learned Avoidance And Stimulus Generalization Of Unpalatable Prey, Joyce M. Dykema

Avian Cognition Papers

I examined a variety of factors hypothesized to be important in the evolution and maintenance of aposematism. Aposematism occurs when prey individuals advertise their toxic or otherwise aversive nature to potential predators via evolved conspicuous signals. I conducted three experiments in which blue jays (Cyanocitta cristata) were allowed to search a printed grayscale pixilated background for grayscale pixilated moths in an open room. I manipulated moth appearance and food reward, and recorded jay predation on the varying moth stimuli. In my first experiment, I repeated Alatalo & Mappes’ (1996) study examining the effects of prey gregariousness, or grouping, …

Drowning In Wetlands Jurisdictional Determination Process: Implementation Of Rapanos V. United States, Kenneth S. Gould Apr 2008

Drowning In Wetlands Jurisdictional Determination Process: Implementation Of Rapanos V. United States, Kenneth S. Gould

University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review

Today, through court interpretation and administrative agency adoption of related regulations, § 404 of the Clean Water Act of 1972 (the "Act") has become the major tool for protection of wetlands. Section 404(a) requires a permit from the United States Army Corps of Engineers for "the discharge of dredged or fill material into the navigable waters at specified disposal sites." If the Corps concludes that development activity might harm wetlands subject to Corps jurisdictional protection, it can decline to issue a permit to allow development or issue a permit under conditions designed to protect the wetlands from harm.

Constitutional Law—First Amendment & Freedom Of Speech—Students May Be Regarded As Closed-Circuit Recipients Of The State's Anti Drug Message: The Supreme Court Creates A New Exception To The Tinker Student Speech Standard. Morse V. Frederick, 127 S. Ct. 2618 (2007), Megan D. Hargraves

University of Arkansas at Little Rock Law Review

This note argues that the Supreme Court's decision in Morse significantly weakens students' free speech rights. Although the Court stated that students "do not shed their constitutional rights at the school house gates," its decisions, in effect, weakens Tinker's important holding that students are entitled to First Amendment protection. The note asserts that the Court's opinion broadens schools' authority to regulate student speech in ways that are contrary to fundamental First Amendment values and explicitly allows schools to engage in highly suspect viewpoint discrimination.

The note first examines some of the fundamental First Amendment values at stake in student speech …

Biological Activity Prediction Of An Ethno Medicinal Plant Cinnamomum Camphora Through Bio-Informatics, D. Abiya Chelliah Apr 2008

Biological Activity Prediction Of An Ethno Medicinal Plant Cinnamomum Camphora Through Bio-Informatics, D. Abiya Chelliah

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Having established that there is a market for a particular chemical substance and an opportunity for new or improved production, the action is necessary to put these ideas into practice in the field of its activity prediction. Biological Activity Spectrum (BAS) of a compound represents the complex of pharmacological effects, physiological & biochemical mechanisms of action, specific toxicity (mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, teratogenicity & embryotoxicity) which can be revealed in a compound's interaction with the biological system. Biological Activity Spectrum describes the intrinsic properties of the compound dependent on it's structural particularities. It may be revealed in experiment under any conditions (dosage, …

Supply, Demand, And Consequences: The Impact Of Information Flow On Individual Permitting Decisions Under Section 404 Of The Clean Water Act, Alyson C. Flournoy

UF Law Faculty Publications

This paper focuses on a public trust resource -- wetlands -- and examines an issue that has been studied primarily with reference to health-based pollution-control statutes. This paper assesses whether information gaps create an obstacle to successful regulation under section 404 of the Clean Water Act (CWA or "the Act") as it applies to discharges of dredged and fill material in wetlands. It focuses on how section 404 and the regulations governing permitting determine information demands, information supply, and the legal consequences of a gap between supply and demand. The goal of this inquiry into the demand/supply/consequences scheme is to …

Between Tales And Their Tellers, Jessica Block '09 Apr 2008

Between Tales And Their Tellers, Jessica Block '09

The Delta

The Host's motives and the roles he occupies as self appointed leader of the pilgrimage to Canterbury and as host of the tale-telling competition are up for debate, as noted by several Chaucerian critics. Most agree that the Host remains a powerful force throughout the Canterbury Tales and that he only disappears from the forefront of the Tales because he has been wrapped into its core, as William Keen suggests. Following his rousing speech, which finalizes the General Prologue, the Host surfaces only occasionally and speaks in minute bursts. It is all the more important, then, that we as readers …
