Yupanchis: La Matemática Inca Y Su Incorporación A La Clase, Yonit Bousany Apr 2008

Yupanchis: La Matemática Inca Y Su Incorporación A La Clase, Yonit Bousany

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Influence Of Medicinal Plants On The Spiritism, Religion, And Science Of Tulear, Madagascar, Meghan Sweet

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Medicinal plants are polyvalent remedies used in industry and medicine. They have curative and preventative powers when used internally and externally on humans. They are also used for agricultural and veterinary purposes. They are necessary to the human body to give health and strength. Medicinal plants influence spiritism, religion, and science. These three worldviews make value judgments regarding medicinal plants. This study determines some limits and interdependencies of each worldview by looking at how they are influenced by medicinal plants in Tulear, Madagascar.

South Africa’S Unsung “She-Roes”: A Practicum Study Of Npo Grandmothers Against Poverty And Aids, Khayelitsha Township, Cape Town, Rachel Pryzby

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Across Africa, the AIDS pandemic has forced HIV+ individuals and orphaned children into the care of elderly women. Though this has occurred in millions of families, little support has been offered for the grandmothers supporting children and grandchildren on a limited income. This study reports on a practicum study at Grandmothers Against Poverty and AIDS (GAPA), the first African organization to recognize the important role played by grandmothers in light of HIV/AIDS. The study was conducted in April 2008 at the GAPA center in Khayelitsha Township, Cape Town. The main objective of the study was to evaluate the organization’s origin, …

Hiv/Aids Treatment And Care In A Long-Term Conflict Setting: Observations From The Aids Support Organization (Taso) In The Teso Region, Emma Smith

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Since its emergence in the early 1980s, HIV/AIDS has come to infect 33.2 million people world wide, over two thirds of whom (68%) reside in sub-Saharan Africai. While great strides have been taken in terms of global awareness, research, treatment and care accessibility, the epidemic remains severe and many of those infected, especially those in sub-Saharan African nations, face the continued challenges of stigma and discrimination, limited medical resources, insufficient care, insurmountable costs and great distances to treatment area. When the individual case of Uganda is examined, it is encouraging to note that HIV prevalence has declined significantly since the …

Progress toward understanding the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis (CF) and developing effective therapies has been hampered by lack of a relevant animal model. CF mice fail to develop the lung and pancreatic disease that cause most of the morbidity and mortality in patients with CF. Pigs may be better animals than mice in which to model human genetic diseases because their anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, size, and genetics are more similar to those of humans. However, to date, gene-targeted mammalian models of human genetic disease have not been reported for any species other than mice. Here we describe the first steps …

Bell Atlantic V. Twombly: How Motions To Dismiss Become (Disguised) Summary Judgments, Richard A. Epstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

The recent Supreme Court decision in Bell Atlantic v. Twombly stands at the crossroads of antitrust and civil procedure. As an antitrust case, Twombly makes sense on structural grounds. The FCC regulation of the telecommunications industry, and the many innocent explanations as to why each telecommunications company would stay out of its rival’s territories obviated the need for further discovery. But in many other contexts, including Conley v. Gibson—a case involving potential breach of the duty of fair representation on matters of racial discrimination— discovery could flesh out the relevant factual issues. The Supreme Court’s general disapproval of Conley sweeps …

Entrepreneurs On Horseback: Reflections On The Organization Of Law, Darian M. Ibrahim, D. Gordon Smith Apr 2008

Entrepreneurs On Horseback: Reflections On The Organization Of Law, Darian M. Ibrahim, D. Gordon Smith

Faculty Publications

“Law and entrepreneurship” is an emerging field of study. Skeptics might wonder whether law and entrepreneurship is a variant of that old canard, the Law of the Horse. In this Essay, we defend law and entrepreneurship against that charge and urge legal scholars to become even more engaged in the wide-ranging scholarly discourse regarding entrepreneurship. In making our case, we argue that research at the intersection of entrepreneurship and law is distinctive. In some instances, legal rules and practices are tailored to the entrepreneurial context, and in other instances, general rules of law find novel expression in the entrepreneurial context. …

Faculty Publications

Capsular polysaccharide (CPS) is a major virulence factor in Vibrio vulnificus, and encapsulated strains have an opaque, smooth (OpS) colony morphology, while nonencapsulated strains have a translucent, smooth (TrS) colony morphology. Previously, we showed that OpS and TrS parental strains can yield a third colony type, rugose (R), and that the resulting strains, with the OpR and TrR phenotypes, respectively, form copious biofilms. Here we show that while OpR and TrR strains both produce three-dimensional biofilm structures that are indicative of rugose extracellular polysaccharide (rEPS) production, OpR strains also retain expression of CPS and are virulent in an iron-supplemented mouse …

© 2008 American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists. Eighty-six primiparous or multiparoussows and their pigs were used to evaluatethe effects of changing DCAD in late gestation and in lactation on sow productivity.Sows were allotted to treatment based on parity and their farrowing date. Experiment 1 was a preliminary experiment conducted to determine the level of DCAD that would reduce urinary pH. Twenty sows were used in Exp. 1, and the dietary treatments consisted of a corn-soybean meal diet with 4 levels of DCAD (140, 103, 80, and 56 mEq/kg). These DCAD were achieved by addition of 4 levels of chloride …

The Sinorhizobium Meliloti Msba2 Protein Is Essential For The Legume Symbiosis, Sebastian Beck, Victoria L. Marlow, Katy Woodall, William T. Doerrler, Euan K. James, Gail P. Ferguson Apr 2008

The Sinorhizobium Meliloti Msba2 Protein Is Essential For The Legume Symbiosis, Sebastian Beck, Victoria L. Marlow, Katy Woodall, William T. Doerrler, Euan K. James, Gail P. Ferguson

Faculty Publications

Sinorhizobium meliloti is a beneficial legume symbiont, closely related to Brucella species, which are chronic mammalian pathogens. We discovered that the S. meliloti MsbA2 protein is essential to ensure the symbiotic interaction with the host plant, alfalfa. S. meliloti invades plant cells via plant-derived structures known as infection threads. However, in the absence of MsbA2, S. meliloti remains trapped within abnormally thickened infection threads and induces a heightened plant defence response, characterized by a substantial thickening of the nodule endodermis layer and the accumulation of polyphenolic compounds. The S. meliloti MsbA2 protein is homologous to the Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide/phospholipid trafficking …

Mobility In China: A Conceptual Take On A Personal Vehicle For China In 2020 That Enhances Maneuverability, Jonathan Eziquiel-Shriro Apr 2008

Mobility In China: A Conceptual Take On A Personal Vehicle For China In 2020 That Enhances Maneuverability, Jonathan Eziquiel-Shriro

Theses

China has the largest projected automobile market in the world, expected to surpass the United States as the largest car market in the world by 2025. The combination of large population, a mass movement of citizens to cities, and a pollution crisis creates unique opportunities in China for automobile design. The first generations of Chinese to embrace the automobile have been attracted to them by the same values that have been embraced by the West such as prestige, a reflection of personal success, and a sense of freedom of movement. This attraction has given rise to traditional brands such as …

An Appreciation Of Marc Galanter's Scholarship, John M. Lande Apr 2008

An Appreciation Of Marc Galanter's Scholarship, John M. Lande

Faculty Publications

This brief essay highlights three of Marc Galanter's works to illustrate qualities that seem especially worth emulating. Galanter's classic article, Why the “Haves” Come Out Ahead: Speculations on the Limits of Legal Change, focuses on how the legal system actually operates in daily life and challenges a conventional wisdom that simply providing have-nots with more lawyers would substantially reduce inequality. The article is particularly relevant to the dispute resolution field, focusing on the vast majority of legally-oriented behavior that occurs outside of court. It distinguishes truly private dispute resolution (such as self-help, withdrawal from relationships, and intra-group processes) from settlement …

Chocolate, Copyright, Confusion: Intellectual Property And The Supreme Court Of Canada, David Vaver Apr 2008

Chocolate, Copyright, Confusion: Intellectual Property And The Supreme Court Of Canada, David Vaver

Osgoode Hall Review of Law and Policy

This lecture scans how the Supreme Court has been interpreting Canada’s intellectual property laws and how its decisions may affect legislative policy. The Court has become more interested and competent in this field than was the case even a couple of decades ago. The approach in two decisions of the Court, Compo Co. Ltd v. Blue Crest Music Inc. (1979) and Euro-Excellence Inc. v. Kraft Canada Inc. (2007) is particularly compared. Compo contains propositions which unintendedly cast a baneful influence over later law, while Kraft sees the Court split four ways in a case where copyright law was used unsuccessfully …

The Dynamic Nature Of Eukaryotic Genomes, Laura Wegener Parfrey, Daniel J.G. Lahr, Laura A. Katz Apr 2008

The Dynamic Nature Of Eukaryotic Genomes, Laura Wegener Parfrey, Daniel J.G. Lahr, Laura A. Katz

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Analyses of diverse eukaryotes reveal that genomes are dynamic, sometimes dramatically so. In numerous lineages across the eukaryotic tree of life, DNA content varies within individuals throughout life cycles and among individuals within species. Discovery of examples of genome dynamism is accelerating as genome sequences are completed from diverse eukaryotes. Though much is known about genomes in animals, fungi, and plants, these lineages represent only 3 of the 60-200 lineages of eukaryotes. Here, we discuss diverse genomic strategies in exemplar eukaryotic lineages, including numerous microbial eukaryotes, to reveal dramatic variation that challenges established views of genome evolution. For example, in …
