Review Of Alexander's Bridge. By Willa Cather, Elizabeth Ammons Apr 2008

Review Of Alexander's Bridge. By Willa Cather, Elizabeth Ammons

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Willa Cather tried to disown Alexander's Bridge (1912). In her 1922 preface reprinted in this impressive scholarly edition, she compared her first novel invidiously to her second, O Pioneers! (1913): "The difference in quality in the two books is an illustration of the fact that it is not always easy for the inexperienced writer to distinguish between his own material and that which he would like to make his own." Whereas most of Cather's long fiction would concentrate on the Great Plains, the region she knew best and loved most deeply, this first novel takes place in Boston, England, and …

Extending The Security Net The Impact Of Rangeland Insurance On Ranching Economy And Culture, Rex J. Rowley Apr 2008

Extending The Security Net The Impact Of Rangeland Insurance On Ranching Economy And Culture, Rex J. Rowley

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Humans have a complex relationship with the land. At the base of it lies our need for what the land can give: materials for shelter, food and water for sustenance, and scenic beauty for pleasure. But, similar to our interactions with other humans, our relationship with the land is not always perfect. The land can often be our worst enemy. Storm, drought, famine, and pestilence are common words from the historical record representing times when this connection between humans and nature is challenged.

Crop insurance is a relatively recent invention that attempts to level the playing field in our contest …

Constructing A Home On The Range Homemaking In Early-Twentieth-Century Plains Photograph Albums, Christina E. Dando Apr 2008

Constructing A Home On The Range Homemaking In Early-Twentieth-Century Plains Photograph Albums, Christina E. Dando

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

These lyrics capture a yearning for a place to call home. But what landscape is associated with this longing? For people living near the coasts or mountains of America, it must be hard to imagine longing for a "home on the plains"-but many Americans have had, and still have, a home on the Plains. The stereotypical American image of the Plains is flatness, austerity, emptiness. Not all would consider this an ideal landscape for home. So how did the people who settled on the Plains "view" this landscape? What did they see? How did this land come to be recognized …

The Prairie Home Companion Honors Program, Paul Strong Apr 2008

The Prairie Home Companion Honors Program, Paul Strong

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

“Ah, hear that old piano, from down the avenue.” Every Saturday at 6:00pm, at home in Alfred or on the coast of Maine or in Chapel Hill, I can count on hearing those words, “coming to you live from the Fitzgerald Theatre.” It’s time to settle in for another edition of A Prairie Home Companion. The show’s familiarity is comforting. I know just what to expect: The Adventures of Guy Noir (Private Eye), Dusty and Lefty, The Guys’ All- Star Shoe Band, faux ads for Powdermilk Biscuits and The Duct Tape Council, lots of music and singing, and, finally, The …

Airline Quality Rating 2008, Brent D. Bowen, Dean E. Headley Apr 2008

Airline Quality Rating 2008, Brent D. Bowen, Dean E. Headley

Airline Quality Rating Report

The Airline Quality Rating (AQR) was developed and first announced in early 1991 as an objective method for assessing airline quality on combined multiple performance criteria. This current report, the Airline Quality Rating 2008, reflects monthly Airline Quality Rating scores for calendar year 2007. AQR socres for 2007 are based on 15 elements in four major areas that focus on airline performance aspects important to air travel consumers.

The Airline Quality Rating 2008 is a summary of month-by-month quality ratings for U.S. airlines that are required to report performance by virtue of havign at least 1% of domestic scheduled-service passenger …

Hair Of The Frog And Other Empty Metaphors: The Play Element In Figurative Language, L. David Ritchie, Valrie Dyhouse Apr 2008

Hair Of The Frog And Other Empty Metaphors: The Play Element In Figurative Language, L. David Ritchie, Valrie Dyhouse

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this essay we discuss a class of apparently metaphorical idioms, exemplified by "fine as frog's hair," that do not afford any obvious interpretation, and appear to have originated, at least in part, in language play. We review recent trends in both play theory and metaphor theory, and show that a playful approach to language is often an important element in the use and understanding of metaphors (and idioms generally), even when metaphors can be readily interpreted by means of a vehicle-to-topic mapping. Based on this evidence we call for a more deliberate inclusion of language play in metaphor theory …

Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus Infects Mature Porcine Dendritic Cells And Up-Regulates Interleukin-10 Production, Lilian Flores-Mendoza, Erika Silva-Campa, Monica Resendiz, Fernando A. Osorio, Jesus Hernandez Apr 2008

Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus Infects Mature Porcine Dendritic Cells And Up-Regulates Interleukin-10 Production, Lilian Flores-Mendoza, Erika Silva-Campa, Monica Resendiz, Fernando A. Osorio, Jesus Hernandez

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) infects mature dendritic cells (mDCs) derived from porcine monocytes and matured with lipopolysaccharide. The infection of mDCs induced apoptosis, reduced the expression of CD80/86 and major histocompatibility complex class II molecules, and increased the expression of interleukin-10, thus suggesting that such mDC modulation results in the impairment of T-cell activation.

Using Scenarios To Teach Undergraduates About Copyright, Fair Use, And Plagiarism, Susan Ariew, Heather Runyan Apr 2008

Using Scenarios To Teach Undergraduates About Copyright, Fair Use, And Plagiarism, Susan Ariew, Heather Runyan

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2006

The millennial generation is immersed in an Internet culture that embraces and endorses illegal downloading and file sharing. Staff writer Ron Barnett, from the Greensboro News, reports that one billion copyrighted songs are downloaded each month in violation of copyright. Because it is more likely that you will get hit by a bus than be sued by a record or video company, young people engage in these illegal activities daily.

How, then, are we to teach them about academic integrity and information ethics when the culture tells them that if you do not get caught it is okay to do …

Grains Of Learning: Learning Objects & Library Instruction, Deborah Diller Apr 2008

Grains Of Learning: Learning Objects & Library Instruction, Deborah Diller

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2006

This session will illustrate how new technologies assist instruction librarians in adding variety, interaction, and content into the information literacy curriculum. There will be a lively hour of exploration about a Grain of Learning and putting learning objects to work for students in the classroom setting, a correspondence course, and an online classroom. The classroom settings will focus on a teacher-led large group review, pretest, or small group activity and a learner-driven individual or partner review, pretest, or small group. The correspondence course looks at assignments and activities, and the online classroom includes a pretest, review, or assigned activity. Samples …

The Begetting Of Information Literacy Tutorials: Third-Wave Tutorials For The Ipod Generation, Meg Atwater-Singer, Susan Metcalf

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2006

Two southern Indiana instruction librarians will share their collaborative efforts to incorporate some of the latest technologies in the creation of online tutorials for their users. The tools and technologies to be discussed will range from free to expensive, low tech to high tech, and easy-to-use to relatively complex. The first part of the presentation will include a brief discussion of Camtasia and Flash, but focus primarily on Macromedia's Breeze Presenter software, which works in conjunction with Microsoft PowerPoint. The content and design of Pennsylvania State University's tutorial, The Information Cycle, will be used to measure the success …

Survey Of Changes To Cable-Trap Regulations In The United States During 1980–2007, Stephen Vantassel, Kelly D. J. Powell, Tim L. Hiller Apr 2008

Survey Of Changes To Cable-Trap Regulations In The United States During 1980–2007, Stephen Vantassel, Kelly D. J. Powell, Tim L. Hiller

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Despite the anti-trapping initiatives that occurred during 1992–2000, the overall national trend has been less restrictive trapping regulations as they apply to cable-restraint devices. We believe this policy shift among state wildlife agencies has been influenced by two different events. The first relates to advances in trap technology and trapping methods. Nowhere has this change been more evident than in the liberalization of snaring regulations for the capture of beaver. Even land-based snaring has been expanded as development of break-away devices and setting strategies have increased snare performance to capture target-species, and do so without lethal effects. The second event …

Governor Blunt’S Missouri Feral Hog Task Force: Engaging State And Federal Agencies With Private Stakeholders, Rex Martensen Apr 2008

Governor Blunt’S Missouri Feral Hog Task Force: Engaging State And Federal Agencies With Private Stakeholders, Rex Martensen

National Conference on Feral Hogs (2008)

Feral hogs are a serious concern for Missouri. Their rooting and feeding behavior contributes to soil erosion, reduced water quality, and damage to agricultural lands including cropland, pasture and hayfields. Feral hogs are a direct threat to natural resources and native wildlife, including endangered plants and animals. The spread of disease by feral hogs is another major concern and there is potential for these diseases to jeopardize people, pets and livestock and, in particular, the private pork industry in Missouri.

By Executive Order, Governor Matt Blunt created a director/administrator level, multi-agency task force to address the issues associated with feral …

Antecedents Of Entrepreneurial Orientation: A Contingency Approach, Laurent Stephane Josien Apr 2008

Antecedents Of Entrepreneurial Orientation: A Contingency Approach, Laurent Stephane Josien

Doctoral Dissertations

This research was created in order to offer a better understanding of the entrepreneurial orientation construct. Based on the literature review several antecedents of the entrepreneurial orientation construct were identified: risk, achievement, innovation, locus of control, self-esteem, opportunity, autonomy, proactiveness, and competitive aggressiveness. Relying on the contingency theory developed by Burns and Stalker (1961), it was decided to use the Carland's trichotomy of entrepreneurs as a moderator variable between the antecedents and the entrepreneurial orientation construct. As a result, three main areas of research were identified. The first area deals with determining which dimensions are underpinning the entrepreneurial orientation construct, …

Effects Of Dichotic Auditory Training On Children With Central Auditory Processing Disorder, Kiley Edwards Stephenson Apr 2008

Effects Of Dichotic Auditory Training On Children With Central Auditory Processing Disorder, Kiley Edwards Stephenson

Doctoral Dissertations

(Central) auditory processing disorder (CAPD) is a condition in which individuals with normal hearing present with difficulties often associated with hearing loss. While there are currently many tests available for the CAPD assessment, there are very few therapies for the remediation of a CAPD. A new therapy program, called Dichotic Auditory Training (DAT), aimed at improving the performance of those individuals with CAPD, was the focus of this study. Eight children between the ages of seven and twelve went through the four week training. The Staggered Spondaic Word (SSW) test, the SCAN-C/A, and a test designed after the DAT …

Thank Goodness He-Man Showed Up': Hypermasculine Cultural Posturing And The Token Women Of 80s Animated Action Teams, Matthew Diebler Apr 2008

Thank Goodness He-Man Showed Up': Hypermasculine Cultural Posturing And The Token Women Of 80s Animated Action Teams, Matthew Diebler

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

As VH-1, American Apparel, and the return of the Mohawk have shown us, the 80s were a special time in America's cultural consciousness, and our recent aesthetic of nostalgia has brought a number of 80s cultural icons full circle (most immediately visible through the popular revival of such 80s franchises as Die Hard and Transformers). Caught in this wave of 80s nostalgic bliss, I found myself reminiscing about how much I loved Cheetara from the ThunderCats when I was a boy. I remember running with my hands open as though the mimicking of her running style would …

Mangily : La Vie En Mieux Une Exploration Des Effets Du Développement Et Le Tourisme Communautaire Sur Le Village De Mangily, Madagascar, Breanna Draxler

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Tibetan Medicine: Carving A Niche In The Modern Medical And Scientific Community, Devon Marie Fitzgerald Apr 2008

Tibetan Medicine: Carving A Niche In The Modern Medical And Scientific Community, Devon Marie Fitzgerald

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Tibetan medicine is an ancient tradition, stretching back over one thousand years. Today, the Tibetan medical community, centered at the Men-Tsee-Khang (Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute) in Dharamsala, India, is trying to bring Tibetan medicine into the modern world. They are doing this mainly by focusing on research, based on modern scientific methods, to produce clinical and laboratory studies demonstrating the efficacy of Tibetan medicine. This paper compiles interviews from Men-Tsee-Khang staff closest to these projects, articles about modernizing traditional medicine from both the Tibetan and Western perspectives, and a review of some of the recent studies to come out …
