Bernard Shaw's Arms And The Man, Richard Hinz Apr 2008

Bernard Shaw's Arms And The Man, Richard Hinz

Master of Theater Production Graduate Projects

Arms and the Man is one of Shaw's most beloved works. It's commentary on love, war and society is as applicable today as it was in the late nineteenth century. The comedy of the play is seen through the juxtaposition of character and the changes in attitude the main character and others goes through as the play progresses. Given the current conflict our country is involved in, audiences of today can readily relate to the ideas presented by Shaw on war and military action. Love is a theme that is universal and remains a timeless theme in all entertainment media …

How Can Art Education Enhance The Content Subject Area In An Urban School Setting?, Lonnie Ford Apr 2008

How Can Art Education Enhance The Content Subject Area In An Urban School Setting?, Lonnie Ford

Dissertations

Parents and educators have traditionally viewed it as mere "enrichment" rather than a viable and essential part of the school curriculum. To address this issue, professional groups such as the National Art Education Association (NAEA) have consistently advocated for the importance of art by framing it as another core subject area that should be valued as highly as science, math, social studies, and language arts. Unfortunately, such a stance ignores another critical argument for the value of art. When it is framed as a stand-alone core subject area, essential connections among art and the other disciplines are neglected.

From Bulls To Music: Social, Religious, And Economic Aspects Of A Pilgrimage To Nuestra Señora, La Vírgen De Altagracia, Angelina Tallaj

Publications and Research

Every August 10th, about 800,000 pilgrims begin a five-day pilgrimage to the Basilica of the Virgin of Altagracia in Higüey, Dominican Republic. In this paper, I will show some interesting aspects of this pilgrimage’s economy that, while not unique to this pilgrimage, become much more tangible because of the presence of bulls as alms. I will continue, through the study of the music making and ritual, to show the role that music (and especially improvisation) plays in the social and devotional aspects of this pilgrimage. By examining the complex web of assumptions and expressions that contains the acts of music …

Persistent Organic Pollutant Accumulation In The Arctic, Rachel T. Kirby Apr 2008

Persistent Organic Pollutant Accumulation In The Arctic, Rachel T. Kirby

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

The Arctic is one of the last regions of the world that remains seemingly untouched by modern human existence. A closer look, however, reveals the effects of pollutants on the human and animal populations in the Arctic. Persistent Organic Pollutants (“POPs”) are toxic chemicals such as pesticides and industrial by-products that break down very slowly in the environment. POPs reach the Arctic from smokestacks and factories all over the world and then accumulate within the tissues of each animal in the food chain. The higher on the food chain, the higher the concentration of POPs in the animal.

The Forgotten North: Peoples And Lands In Peril, Urusula Kazarian Apr 2008

The Forgotten North: Peoples And Lands In Peril, Urusula Kazarian

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

Arctic indigenous peoples are extremely susceptible to the immediate impacts of climate change. While many indigenous groups face serious battles over rights to land and resources, the Arctic groups face the impending, compounding factor of some of the most drastic impacts from climate change. Their dependence on the integrity of local ecosystems for their survival as autonomous groups makes them even more vulnerable to the melting of ice and permafrost and to the decline of local animal and fish species. This Article provides a broad overview of Arctic countries’ legal relationship to their respective indigenous groups and discusses legal tools …

Using The Polar Bear Framework To Protect The Arctic Habitat, Tim P. Shields Apr 2008

Using The Polar Bear Framework To Protect The Arctic Habitat, Tim P. Shields

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

Listing the polar bear as a threatened species is the predominant manner in which protection and preservation of the Arctic habitat might be achieved. The U.S. Geological Survey issued a final report on the status of the polar bear on September 7, 2007. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, however, has missed its deadline to list the polar bear as a threatened animal. As a result, three non-profit conservation groups sued the Bush Administration on March 10, 2008, requesting that the court require the agency to comply with the timeline for completing the listing process.

Can Climate Change Be Good For Greenland? An Arctic Island’S Response To New Development Opportunities, James Mitchell Apr 2008

Can Climate Change Be Good For Greenland? An Arctic Island’S Response To New Development Opportunities, James Mitchell

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

Despite its location, Greenland shares some similarities with the global south. Many of its 60,000 inhabitants subsist at least in part on nature, and its governance status is akin to a colony of a European nation. The government has welcomed the opportunity to establish greater economic independence from Denmark by “developing” Greenland. However, given that black carbon, in the form of soot-laden snow, accounts for about a third of the warming in the Arctic regions, is heavy industry, most of which is foreign-owned, a viable development path?

Carrying A Good Joke Too Far, Peter A. Alces, Jason M. Hopkins Apr 2008

Carrying A Good Joke Too Far, Peter A. Alces, Jason M. Hopkins

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Contract is predicated on agreement, or so the story goes. Of course, the reality of the modern bank-customer transaction is not so straightforward. In those transactions, the contract law is confronted with an ostensible dilemma: Should the law find its goal in the efficiency to be gained by binding customers to terms which they neither read nor understand? Or should the law instead focus on classical conceptions of bargain and agreement, and refuse to enforce contract terms that do not exhibit these characteristics? Article 4 of the Uniform Commercial Code, which regulates bank-customer transactions, attempts to strike a balance between …

Spectres, Monstres Et Fantômes. Les Chants Maldoror" Et Le Spectacle De La Fantasmagorie, Eloise Sureau-Hale

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The Right To Counsel: Policy Reasons For Fundamental Reforms To Promote Access To Justice, Adrian Scotchmer Apr 2008

The Right To Counsel: Policy Reasons For Fundamental Reforms To Promote Access To Justice, Adrian Scotchmer

Osgoode Hall Review of Law and Policy

This article argues that it is highly undesirable that legal costs impede, and often preclude access to counsel. Even if access to counsel is not a constitutional right in itself, as the Supreme Court of Canada held in Christie, the arguments advanced by the plaintiff in Christie when supplemented by other considerations, establish the importance of access to counsel as a matter of policy. As such, the law societies and the governments of Canada ought to do more to promote access to counsel. Specifically, the law societies ought to reduce market-entry and market-conduct restrictions and increase the use of existing …

The Role Of Estrogen Receptor Alpha In Neonatal Oocyte Development, Jemella C. Raymore Apr 2008

The Role Of Estrogen Receptor Alpha In Neonatal Oocyte Development, Jemella C. Raymore

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The development of primordial germ cells into oocytes is important for mammalian reproduction. Female germ cells first undergo a number of cell divisions resulting in the formation of cysts. Germ cell cysts are clusters of cells connected by intercellular bridges, formed by incomplete cytokinesis. The cysts breakdown after birth, resulting in individual oocytes that become surrounded by somatic pre-granulosa cells to form primordial follicles. During cyst breakdown two thirds of the original population of oocytes die. However, the processes by which cells within the cyst are designated to survive or die is not yet known. In addition, it is not …

Religion In The Workplace: Faith, Action, And The Religious Foundations Of American Employment Law, Thomas C. Kohler Apr 2008

Religion In The Workplace: Faith, Action, And The Religious Foundations Of American Employment Law, Thomas C. Kohler

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Religion in the workplace tends to make us uneasy-an intruder in a world of Weberian rationality. Nevertheless, while relatively few of us realize it, our labor and employment law has a strongly religious foundation, without which we would have little of the legal structure with which we are familiar. In this address, I will expose this foundation, and suggest that we only fully can understand the dynamics of the law in this area in light of the religious influences that gave our law its form. Secondly, I will suggest that the crisis that employment law finds itself in—and not just …

Evolution/Revolution: The Arts And Crafts In Contemporary Fashion And Textiles, Joanne Dolan Ingersoll, Amy Pickworth, Editor

Journals

Exhibition Notes, Number 28, Spring 2008. Evolution/Revolution brings together the textile work of designers from the U.S., Britain, Europe, South and Central America, and Japan, and draws philosophical parallels between these contemporary artists and those of the Arts and Crafts Movement of 19th-century Britain. The exhibition is organized around the themes of Storytelling, Experimentation and Materials, Collaboration, and Art and Life—key ideas that spring from the Arts and Crafts spirit.

One of the most widely influential art and design movements of the 19th and 20th centuries, the Arts and Crafts Movement was an aesthetic and political response to a world stripped …

Lack Of Respiratory Effects Of Nicotine Applied To The Caudal Medullary Raphã©, Nicole Bates Apr 2008

Lack Of Respiratory Effects Of Nicotine Applied To The Caudal Medullary Raphã©, Nicole Bates

Biology Theses - Archive

Breathing is an involuntary and automatic process initiated by a network of neurons within the brainstem. These neurons are affected by a number of factors (mechanical, electrical and chemical) that help modulate the frequency and pattern of breathing. Three respiratory chemosensitive sites have traditionally been described on the ventral medullary surface. These sites are affected by the pH of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) bathing the brain and by chemicals dissolved within the CSF. More recently, additional sites have been described with chemosensitive activity and of these the medullary raphé has received the most attention. Although the dangers of smoking is …

Evaluation Of The Anti-Ischemic Effect Of The Ppary Agonist, (Rosiglitazone) In Permanent Focal Cerebral Ischemia In Diabetic Rats., A Shalaby, V Boshra

Mansoura Medical Journal

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a clear risk factor for stroke. Furthermore, diabetes has been shown to be a strong determinant for the presence of multiple lacunar infarcts in stroke patients. There has been a recent appreciation that peroxisome prolifera-tor-activated receptors (PPARs) and their ligands may play an important role in the brain. An increasing number of studies have reported on the effects of PPAR agonists in animal models of neurological damage and disease, including the excitatory damage that occurs in stroke. The PPARy agonist, rosiglitazone, a synthetic li-gand of the thiazolidinedione class was currently used as an antidiabetic agent because …

Age Changes Of The Lacrimal Gland Of Rabbits (Light And Electron Microscopic Studies), Hassan Abd El -Adle, Mostafa El-Gizawi, Hosam Eldin Hessian, Mostafa Abou El-Naga, Alsayed Mohamed

Mansoura Medical Journal

The dry eye in senile people is a major ophthalmologic problem; the aim of this work was to study the his-tological and histochemical changes with advancement of age in the lacri-mal glands in rabbits, and correlating these changes with those, which might be detected at the ultra structural level. Thirty healthy rabbits of both sexes were divided into three groups. Young age group (3-5 months), adult group (9-12 months), and senile group (24-36months). The lacrimal glands, of each animal, were dissected out, isolated and processed; par- affin section stained with Hx&E.,Mal!ory Trichrome and PAS stains. Fresh frozen cryocut section for …

The Role Of Pollinator Shifts In The Floral Diversification Of Iochroma (Solanaceae), Stacey Dewitt Smith, Cécile Ané, David A. Baum Apr 2008

The Role Of Pollinator Shifts In The Floral Diversification Of Iochroma (Solanaceae), Stacey Dewitt Smith, Cécile Ané, David A. Baum

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Differences in floral traits among plant species have often been attributed to adaptation to pollinators. We explored the importance of pollinator shifts in explaining floral divergence among 15 species of Iochroma. We examined four continuously varying floral traits: corolla length, nectar reward, display size, and flower color. Pollinator associations were characterized with a continuously varying measure of pollinator importance (the product of visitation and pollen deposition) for four groups of pollinators: hummingbirds, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, and Diptera. A phylogenetic generalized least squares approach was used to estimate correlations between pollinator groups and floral traits across a sample of Bayesian trees …
