Bias In Population Growth Rate Estimation: Sparse Data, Partial Life Cycle Analysis And Jensen's Inequality, Jason S. Grear, Bret D. Elderd

Faculty Publications

Demographic matrix models have become an integral part of population viability analysis for threatened and endangered species, but their use is often limited by data availability. A common solution to this problem is to assume constant annual rates within a multi-year stage. Partial life cycle analysis (PLC), which incorporates only juvenile and adult stages, is a noteworthy example of this approach because it has been described in the literature as a reliable approximation of age-structured populations. However, we predict from Jensen's Inequality that the required lumping of age classes leads to over- or underestimation of population fitness when survival rates …

The 10th International Congress on Combustion Byproducts and their Health Effects was held in Ischia, Italy, from June 17-20, 2007. It is sponsored by the US NIEHS, NSF, Coalition for Responsible Waste Incineration (CRWI), and Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The congress focused on: the origin, characterization, and health impacts of combustion-generated fine and ultrafine particles; emissions of mercury and dioxins, and the development/application of novel analytical/diagnostic tools. The consensus of the discussion was that particle-associated organics, metals, and persistent free radicals (PFRs) produced by combustion sources are the likely source of the observed health impacts of airborne PM rather …

Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology Faculty Research and Scholarship

In 2002 and 2003 the 4th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities and the Nemea Valley Archaeological Project (NVAP) excavated a robbed Late Helladic (LH) IIIA2 chamber tomb at Barnavos, west of the village of Ancient Nemea. Through application of a novel method of stratigraphic analysis and careful documentation of the scattered remains, it was ascertained that the tomb was opened as many as six times for four or five interments, including a child and probably both male and female adults. No other tomb was found in the vicinity. This is the first Mycenaean tomb discovered in the valley, and …

Effects Of Lline Rate On Vvideo Qos Over Wireless Networks: An Experimental Approach, Stuart Wallace, Mark Davis

Conference papers

Video streaming over Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANS) is becoming an increasingly popular service. However, end user OoS is highly influenced by many factors. These include the video codec used, the packetization scheme, error concealment and correction techniques, the complexity of the video, propagation losses, and the line rate. In this paper the effect of the line rate on the capacity of the network when streaming multimedia content is analyzed experimentally. It is shown that as the line rate decreases the bandwidth load of the video stream dramatically increases leading to poor QoS at the client side. As automatic line …

Race, Identity, And Professional Responsibility: Why Legal Services Organizations Need African American Staff Attorneys, Shani M. King Oct 2008

Race, Identity, And Professional Responsibility: Why Legal Services Organizations Need African American Staff Attorneys, Shani M. King

UF Law Faculty Publications

Given the fundamental importance of the attorney-client relationship in securing favorable outcomes for clients, legal services organizations that serve large populations of African Americans should employ African American staff attorneys because: (1) African American lawyers and clients share a group identity that makes it more likely that a black attorney will be able to gain a black client's trust; (2) black attorneys communicate more effectively with black clients; and (3) the perception of a judicial system that is unfair and racist is likely to encourage black clients to trust black lawyers more than white lawyers, who are more likely to …

Review Of Ethnomedicinal Uses And Pharmacology Of Evolvulus Alsinoides Linn., Amritpal Singh

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Evolvulus alsinoides L. (Convolvulaceae) is used as nootropic or brain-tonic in traditional systems of medicine like Ayurveda and Unani. The plant is used by certain ethnic races across India, Africa and Philippines to cure fever, cough and cold, venereal diseases, azoospermia, adenitis, and depression. Pre-clinical (in vivo and vitro) investigations have demonstrated anti-amnesic, antistress (adaptogenic), antimicrobial and gastro protective activity. Although clinical-studies are warranted for potential use of E. alsinoides in treating dementia, pre-clinical research has justified the ancient claim of ‘brain-tonic.' The review summarizes ethno medicinal uses and pharmacological investigations carried on the medicinal plant.

Recent Trends In Ayurvedic Pharmacy Education In India, Amritpal Singh, Saurabh Singh Bhagel

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

We wish to train the student perusing career in Ayurvedic Pharmaceutical Sciences both at traditional and molecular levels. The Ayurvedic/herbal /nutraceutical market is hot and it is right time to improve educational standards in Ayurvedic pharmaceutical sciences. To conclude, teaching model for Ayurvedic pharmaceutical sciences must be based on intergraded approach rather than emphasis on one mode. The need of the hour is to separate facts from myths, after all plant based medicine has definite role to offer in future healthcare system when drug resistance and cost effectiveness of synthetic drugs are posing major problem to the pharmaceutical industry.

Global Organization Of Replication Time Zones Of The Mouse Genome, Shlomit Farkash-Amar, Doron Lipson, Andreas Polten, Alon Goren, Charles E. Helmstetter, Zohar Yakhini, Simon Itamar

Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Faculty Publications

The division of genomes into distinct replication time zones has long been established. However, an in-depth understanding of their organization and their relationship to transcription is incomplete. Taking advantage of a novel synchronization method ("baby machine") and of genomic DNA microarrays, we have, for the first time, mapped replication times of the entire mouse genome at a high temporal resolution. Our data revealed that although most of the genome has a distinct time of replication either early, middle, or late S phase, a significant portion of the genome is replicated asynchronously. Analysis of the replication map revealed the genomic scale …
